David Stinson, 26, of Brampton was listed in critical condition Thursday at Sunnybrook Health Sci- ence Centre in Toronto. He was hurt during a stunt that in- volved the collision of three cars in sequence, in a scene also involving pedestrians, according to Durham Regional Police Constable Todd Pet- zold. One of the vehicles involved in the first collision knocked Mr. Stin- son off his feet, and he fell into the path of the second crash and was pinned between two cars that collid- ed. "it was a T-bone collision and he got caught right in the T," says Con- st. Petzold. The officer noted it appears Mr. Stinson did what he was supposed to do for the scene being filmed, but was knocked over when the cars did- n't react to the crash exactly as planned. The mishap occurred around 9:30 p.m. on Delemeade Road, north off Hwy. 7 just west of Brock Road. Mr. Stinson was first taken to Markham-Stouffville Hospital be- fore being transported to Sunny - brook. Police and the Ministry of Labour are currently investigating the acci- dent. "There's nothing that concerns us and we're not anticipating charges;" says Const. Petzold, but notes he can't speak for the ministry. The movie being filmed at the time was Bride of Chucky, with John Ritter and Jennifer Tilley. The Creating Futures fund-raising campaign, with its ambitious $12 -million goal, will be finished and a smash hit. As of Thursday morning, Mr. Polonsky was able to indicate the fund had $11.2 million in it, just $800,000 short of its goal. It's been just two years since the campaign got going and the response from the com- munity has been terrific. General Motors and its em- ployees gave $2 million combined, while thousands of Durham alumni have opened their wallets wide to give generously. This excellent campaign has been a completely pri- vate affair and that's the way Mr. Polonsky likes it. He says he wouldn't look a $1 -million provincial gift horse in the mouth, but he's not out beating the bush- es for that pony either. The president is confident the remaining money will be found to top up the fund be- fore the summer solstice. And with the success of the campaign so far, there's no betting against more money being found. STEVE HOUSTON MANAGING EDITOR Black and white and read all over Pickering resident Dayanna Clarke, an Eng- lish -as -a -Second -Language (ESL) student, made it all worthwhile when she sent this note to the News Advertiser on April 5: "This kind of newspaper helps to connect people in our community... Strong words about her community news- paper. The note from Ms. Clarke came after a half- hour talk I gave to approximately 20 ESL stu- dents earlier this month at the Pickering Public Library's central branch. The News Advertiser was invited to send a representative to speak to the adult student, about the role of a community newspaper in its coverage area- And, rcaAnd, as always, I came away quite im- pressed with the kevel of interest and even the sense of ownership people have about their community newspaper. The students come from all corners of the globe:. They bring with them life experiene:Ls many of us can only relate to through evening newscasts and Hollywood movies. Their questions following my presentation about the elements of the community newvspa- per, its role in providing important local infor- mation, and its history in Ajax and Pickering were honest, forthright and always impressive. I thought that was the end of it, until a dozen or so letters arrived on my desk last week. The comments were quite gratifying in the sense that the students believe in and support the importance of a free press. But they aW) contained some humorous observations, just to keep those of us here at the News Advertiser honest and humble. Here's a sampling of some of their thoughts: "We were able to learn the importance of the Editorial Page where we can write our opinions and letters that can be published. It was kind of you to ... present the local newspa- per, which is the News Advertiser.,, At least I mace it clear which newspaper I was from. All of us know now how and what we have to do when we want to put an ad in the news - Paper .. We will read the News Advertiser with the greatest interest" I'm sure my publisher will be happy with the 'ad' distinction. "I can now understand why your paper is free..." Not sine how to take that one. "I try to read the paper as much as I can. It is still difficult to understand it 100 per cent, but I'm trying" That last note, perhaps, is the most gratify- ing. Someone learning a new language must find it difficult at the best of times to absorb the nuances so common to the English language. Who among us doesn't still have to stop and think of the difference in meaning of the words there, their and they're when we're writing? I offer a tip of the hat to these new residents. I hope they'll continue to learn. And read the News Advertiser. Steve Houston is a regular News Advertiser columnist. To respond to this column tall Infos- ource at 683-7040 and dial 5108. GIRL SLAIN TRYING TO SAVE GRANDMOTHER A six-year-old Clarington girl murdered by her stepfather has been posthumously honoured for bravery in pleading with him not to kill his mother. Jennifer Koval's'kyj's biological father and maternal grandfather re- ceived her civilian award for bravery from Durham Regional Police Wednesday when the force hon- oured five other area residents for their courage. Jennifer and her grandmother Marian Johnston were murdered by Mrs. Johnston's son Ronald England on April 2, 1996 in their Clarington home. Staff Sgt. Roy Goxxf said Jennifer "had apparently walked in on Ronald England who was stabbing his mother. Jennifer pleaded with him to stop. (Mr.) England then turned on Jennifer and started to stab her. "Throughout all of this, Jennifer continued her attempts to stop him from hurting his mother and herself. Jennifer died of multiple stab wounds that were too numerous to accurately count:" Jennifer's grandfather Maryan Koval's'kyj expressed appreciation for the award. "it recognizes her bravery. During the killing, she could talk to the killer. "I find the people who truly un- derstand why Jennifer lost her life ... I appreciate them for that, because it's for my granddaughter." Jennifer's birth father Joseph Cat - tan reflected on how the man who would eventually kill her was given temporary custody of the child. "It's sad my daughter watt placed with people who could hardly look after themselves. Her grandmother could hardly kook after her own physical needs." The 34 -year-old Oshawa resident was working at Innocon on Notion Road in Ajax around 5 p.m. on Oct. 10, 1997 when police told him a criminal believed armed and violent was in the area. A short time later, Mr. Spears observed the suspect forcing the driver of a cement truck out of the vehicle and trying to drive it away. "Without thought for his own safety, Mr. Spears ran over to the truck, seized the suspect, pulling him from the cab to the ground and held him until the police arrived and placed the suspect under arrest;' Staff Sergeant Roy Good reported. The food drive, originally sched. uled to wrap up on April 13, had to N extended by one week after only 15,000 pounds had been collected. "We made it because (Durham) res- idents listened to our call for help," she says. yThe food collected during the drive will be distributed to Salvation Army food banks in Ajax, Whitby, Oshawa and Clarington, to help them supply local families with food during the summer months. This is the last major food drive until Thanksgiving. The food banks help approximately 1,000 adults and 700 to 800 children per month. Cancer risk, detection discussed at info session Risk factors and early detection of gynecological cancer are discussed at an upcoming information session in Durham. Town staff had recommended only that the fire department expand its public edu- cation programme to promote the use of the carbon monoxide detectors in homes, and that Council await the passage of new provincial legislation that would make the Town's authority in this area clearer before passing the proposed bylaw. "Right now at this point in time the leg- islation is unclear," Town clerk Bruce Tay- lor said in an interview. He explained there is no specific provision in provincial legis- lation granting municipalities the power to make carbon monoxide detectors mandato- ry, but that changes to the Municipal Act proposed recently by the Province would provide that power. Mr. Taylor noted there are some other municipalities which already have bylaws making the detectors mandatory, enforcing them under existing property standards leg- islation. But there is some question as to whether their bylaws would hold up in court. "What we would prefer to do is make 100 per cent sure we're on solid ground," said Mr. Taylor. However, for the time be- ing, Pickering will also enforce its bylaw under property standards legislation. The Pickering bylaw requires "every owner and occupant of a dwelling unit" to "install and maintain" a minimum of one carbon monoxide detector in the home. It must be equipped %ith an alarm that is clearly audible from all bedrooms when the doors are closed. Owners are required it,. supply a copy of the manufacturer's main- tenance instructions for the detector to the occupant of the dwelling. The bylaw applies to new and existing homes. It's not coming into effect until No- vember in order to give the Town time it, conduct a public education campaign on the new regulations. Gordon says, "basically, the amount of years I've been in this business has forced me to develop hundreds of } different techniques to successfully solve every situation I've encountered". He also says that "having an extensive background in specialty products for concrete, I know which products to use and which ones really work, that's why I can offer a 10 year full guarantee on all the work 1 do". Gordon prides his company on fast, neat and efficient service. He also prides himself on his troubleshooting ability. "I like to professionally solve problems at the least most reasonable cost to the customer. Sometimes that may involve excavating the entire perimeter of the house and replacing the weeping tiles but that is because it is absolutely necessary. What I won't do is quote on an expensive excavation type repair when I know a simple little ' interior injection will solve the problem. Give me a solid concrete foundation and 90% of the time I can inject the problem with polyurethane by standing on the inside and pumping right through the wall. Block foundations - should be repaired from the outside but I try to isolate the problem within 10-15 ft. to minimize the excavation necessary. Gordon says "home owners should invest in their foundations in much the same way they invest in their roofs. Water corrodes and very quickly. The same way a ' leak in your roof starts corroding the wooden rafters, a leak through your foundation starts to undermine the very integrity of your home. People tend to live with the problem until it escalates into a bigger one. Catch it 4 early enough and possibly save yourself a fortune" Gordon goes on to say that "no job is too big or too small and 1 can promise you a fair and objective evaluation of the problem.' For a free professional evaluation call Gordon at 905-686- 6880. Put on the finishing touch! Fifteen years of installing custom kitchen countertops has earned James Darroch the reputation as The Countertop King. Mr. Darroch, along with partner Brad Worr, started the Ajax business at 9 Cedar St., Ajax, earlier this year, and since then, they've been installing new custom countertops to satisfied customers throughout Durham Region. A beautiful countertop puts the finishing touches on the kitchen style you want. In fact, Mr. Darroch estimates that the look of the kitchen is mostly determined by the design of the countertops. 'The look of the kitchen is 50 per cent due to the countertops," notes Mr. Darroch. The business can install post -formed AMHICRMT basic countertops with a round front and backsplash or custom square -edged countertops and desktops. The Countertop King has countertops for all budgets and offers free estimates and in- home consultations. A salesperson will come to your home with a sampling of countertop designs and it can be ordered right from the comfort of your own home. "Customers don't have to go to a kitchen company to get the service they need," says Mr. Darroch. "Some people are intimidated by that." Currently, The Countertop King is offering $50 off on installation if your countertop is ordered before May 30. Coming off a year in which the .Axemen finished well back in the league's Eastern Conference Rud- dock Division standings and out of the playoffs, long-time team presi- dent Larry Labelle has made several changes he hopes will bring new prosperity both on and off the ice for the Ajax juniors. Labelle has formed a new corpo- rate partnership with the Klondike F(xx1 Rush Restaurant which will be the team's "master sponsor" for the next three seasons. No financial de- tails were announced. The team will also change its name to the Ajax Klondike Axemen to reflect the part- ner%hip. Labelle feels the alliance will be- a "win-win" situation for both the h<,ckey club and tt rant. He points o economics of runn a tier If hocke} team have brought aK)ut the necessity of firming corpo rate partnerships. ""Tire cost of nu ning junior 'A' hoc ey has skyrockets and for us to keep competitive, we had to look at this type of arrangement;' says Labelle. "Some teams in the league arc spending upwards of $500,(XX) per year, like the Milton and the New- market%. Our goal is not to be in the basement, but to go out and market the team " Tom Palantzas, a co-owner of the Klondike Food Rush Restaurant in Ajax's Transit Square, notes the part- wr%hip with the Axemen was a way for his business to play a greater role in the community. '.We wanted to become part of the community in a positive way, so we saw it as a natural connection — the connection with the great Canadian spoil and with the names (Axemen and Klondike). It flowed together in a natural way." During the season, the restaurant will sponsor a Klondike Shoot-out and the three -star selection at each Axemen home game. As well, the team and the restaurant may embark on several other marketing initiatives for the coming season. In addition, the club's uniforms will undergo a transformation for next season. The old hockey -playing 'Axeman' skating out of the 'A' will be gone. A new cartoon -style lum- berjack character will adorn the team's new uniforms. Labelle is also hoping a proposal merger between the OHA Provincial Junior 'A' loop and the Metro junior league will be concluded in time for the coming season. A disLussion paper on the table for the boards of governors of both leagues suggests the new league create divisions with regional rivals Ajax, Pickering Pan- thers, Oshawa Legionaires and Bow- manville Eagles expected to compete in one. The rationale behind the new al- liance of the new league, says La- belle, is to keep travel cost% vhile creating rivalries vhich should attract more tans. "It only m a k e s sense. If you tll the old (Ju - 'C') days the Axcmen wmanville, it would like to play Pickering every second night because: I'm sure a rivalry is going to develop. I hope it will be the sante with Oshawa, too" Labelle expects a vote on the leagues' merger and realignment will be taken by the middle of next month. Meanwhile, the club will host its annual rookie/pre-season mini -camp at the Ajax Community Centre this weekend. Fifty first-year players will skate during the two days of work- outs and scrimmages Saturday and Sunday under the watchful eye of head coach Mark Watson, who joined the Axemen late last season, and general manager Bill Bowden. Labelle expects to see as many as 10 rookies back at the Axemen's main training camp in late summer. photo by Jason Liebregts The Ajax Axemen junior hockey club has adopted the be known as the Ajax Klondike Axemen.
