The lion's roar
Visitors to the Ajax Multicultural Festival last weekend were
'treated to sights and sounds from around the world, includ-
kV the Chinese Lion Dance performed by the Sunny Tang
Kung Fu Centre. Here, Evan Stichhaller (in stroller) watches
the colourful performance with mother, Heather, and brother
Cole at the McLean Community Centre. The Saturday event
drew many residents interested in teaming more about their
friends and neighbours from around the world.
Business views
on towns' merger
being sought
By Marianne Takses
Staff reporter
The local board of trade has decided to weigh in on the
debate over whether Ajax and Pickering should amalgamate.
At a recent meeting, Ajax -Pickering Board of Trade di-
rectors reached a consensus in favour of
a union between the two towns they rep-
resent, and decided to conduct a survey
to determine the views of the board's
600 members on the issue.
"Our... directors have made a commit-
ment this year they're going to focus on
key local issues, and this is the most
prominent one on everybody's mind;"
says board of trade general manager
Lesley Whyte.
The survey is being sent out this DOUG
week. WILKINSON
Members' responses will be used to Business
stake out a position on the issue for the weighs in
board as a whole to take. If the member-
ship is in favour, says board president Doug Wilkinson, it is
prepared to lobby both Ajax and Pickering Councils to move
forward on amalgamation.
"A lot of the discussion in terms of amalgamation has
been from the residents' point of view," notes Mr. Wilkinson.

Donna Hoare believes the
announcement demon-
strates the government "is
paying attention to our
issue" though the amount
.,is just a drop in the bucket.
It's nowhere near enough,
but it is a step in the right
direction "
For Jadwiga Dell of Os-
hawa, $3 million is "noth-
ing" compared to what fam-
ilies need.
"If the money is going to
be spread all over the
province, it really amounts
to very little:"
Ms. Ecker isn't surprised
by such criticism. "I know
there needs to be more
money.
"That's why we're con-
tinuing to move ahead with
reform ... I'm not trying to
diminish the concerns being
expressed. We know there
are many needs."
Ontario Association for
Community Living execu-
tive director Keith Powell
concedes. "'lite announce-
ment comes at an important
time, when there's much
unrest and unhappiness"
with government initiatives.
However, "it's good to
see the money:' admits Mr.
Powell, who applauds the
government for targetting
important areas.
"But it's obviously not
enough. In Durham, I think
you'd be saying it's not
nearly enough:" says the
former executive director of
the Ajax -Pickering and
Whitby Association for
Community Living.
Mr. Powell maintains it's
"critical to set up a formal
framework for distribution"
of the $3 million. "We'd
like to better understand
how this announcement will
fit with the ministry's plans
to develop a means of deter-
mining the level of funding

"I don't think the politicians
have heard a lot from the busi-
ness community on this"
Members are being asked to
respond to the survey as busi-
nesses in, rather than residents
of, the two communities, in
recognition of the fact amalga-
mation is an issue that can have
a strong emotional element to it.
"I live in Ajax and I like Ajax
and I like the idea that I live in
Ajax," explains Mr. Wilkinson.
"Maybe I wouldn't necessarily
want to see (amalgamation) go
forward"
He adds, however, that as a
businessman he recognizes the
union of Ajax and Pickering
would probably be beneficial.
identified three key reasons
amalgamation should
proceed.
"The amalgamation
will significantly in-
crease the economic
strength and economic
development of the two
municipalities by com-
bining the populations

mercial business
strengths of the two
communities," she
says.
Secondly, the direc-
tors believe amalga-
mating municipal ser-
vices will provide cost
efficiencies.
And thirdly, says Ms. Whyte,

tiny, in view of the fact
the provincial govern-
ment will likely force
the two municipalities
to amalgamate at some
time in the future if
they don't do it on their
own"
She notes the board
directors also recog-
nize there are some
concerns assnrinte(i
with amalgamation.
The ones they have
identified are: the po-
tential for loss of em-
ployees at the munici-
pal level; a possible re-

'Angel' helps Pickeringg
woman panic throw h attack
g
PICKERING — A
Pickering woman has noth-
ing but praise for her
"angel".
Donna Mitchell reports
ambulance attendant Jason
Bibeau came to her rescue
when she suffered a panic
attack at her Finch Avenue
home during the early
hours of March 25.
She'd recently under-
gone surgery and was also
diagnosed with breast can-
cer and lymph node cancer.
"I've been hearing I'll have
to go through chemothera-
py and lose my hair. Every-
thing just built up"
Not surprisingly, she
had a panic attack around
1:30 a.m.
"I got into bed and I sat
right up. I said 'girl don't
close your eyes'. Fear came
over me. I couldn't breathe
and I had the shakes;' Ms.
Mitchell recalls.
i
She woke up her hus-
band Desmound Letters
and her parents, who live
across the street. Her moth-
er Mable Mullins called
911.
Mr. Bibeau and his part-
ner Jim Moir, who Ms.
Mitchell calls "my two
knights in shining armour',
responded and right away
recognized she was having
a panic attack.
"My heart was going
very fast, three times as fast
as it should;' Ms. Mitchell
says.
Mr. Bibeau got on his
knees, looked her in the
eyes and talked with her
until they got her to the
hospital.
"If it wasn't for him, I'm
afraid I might slip away. I
felt like dying. The doctor
said it was a very bad at-
tack"
Mr. Bibeau "talked to
me, saying I'd be OK and
nothing will happen. That
man walked me through
everything. What he did, I
couldn't believe it"
Ms. Mitchell was con-
cerned throughout the or-
deal about her three chil-
dren — Loretta, 11, Ken-
neth, 9, and Dylan, 2.
"He was looking into
my eyes, saying 'No one
will take you away from
your children. I promise
you that.' It was like an
angel with wings came
down," she says. "I don't
know him, but I love him to
pieces.
She's now on "very
strong medicine and it con-
trols a reoccurrence"
This panic attack lasted
about six hours.
"They're terrible
things;" says Ms. Mitchell.
"I wouldn't wish one on my
worst enemy"
Pickering teens invited to

for the final session.
The Pickering session,

days, from April 14 to May
19, from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. at

It's spring, the season of renewal.
And Easter weekend nears, a time when many
Durham residents will celebrate with fellowship, a
sense of gratitude and a hearty meal.
Still, there are families in our communities who
won't be sharing in the bounty of spring. They are
the people who, for many reasons, are jobless and
don't have the money to prepare a special meal.
There are children who aren't getting the nutrition
they require to grow strong. There are families
who won't be celebrating this weekend.
That's where you can help in our communities
of Pickering, Ajax, Whitby, Oshawa and beyond.
Optimist Club members in Durham Region are
in the midst of an Easter Food Drive to help those
families through the spring. And needed donations
of food items from people just like you are crucial
to the food drive's success.

A tale of
two towns
Now that the Ajax -Pickering Board of
Trade is reopening the debate on amalgama-
tion of the two towns it represents, residents
would do well to examine a somewhat par-
allel question facing another part of Canada
before they decide whether they are for or
against.
Consider for a moment our usual reac-
tion to the issue of Quebec separation. What
a ridiculous notion, we are often heard to
say. What kind of sense does it make to sug-
gest a group of people who mostly want the
same things — like well -paying fobs, quali-
ty health care, a reasonable social safety net
and a future for their kids — could achieve
them better by dividing themselves into two
countries? The separatists are playing to ir-
rational nationalist emotions, goes the argu-
ment, and that is not a good basis on which
to make decisions.
The amalgamation question facing Ajax
and Pickering is not much different. They're
two towns with somewhat different histo-
ries, but they have almost everything in
common. They're almost the same size.
They're both, to a significant extent, 'bed-
room' communities that would like to estab-
lish a stronger local economic base. They're
facing similar challenges — managing
growth, providing public transit to a sprawl-
ing urban structure, preserving their water-
fronts and natural environment and serving
the growing needs of their residents.
Perhaps more importantly, there's not
much difference between what the two
towns' residents want — reasonable taxes,
reliable and efficient services, a safe and at-
tractive place to live and a broad range of fa-
cilities such as parks, rinks and pools.
It's hard to argue two towns that are still
relatively small would not have more suc-
cess in meeting their common goals if they
worked together, as one. in fact, those who
have spoken against arrtalgamation have not
really challenged that contention, but have
so far been basing their opposition on emo-
tional concepts such as preserving commu-
nity identities.
One reason amalgamation may be a hard
sell to residents is that so far, those who have
favoured it have argued mostly that it's a
good way to cut costs in the era of down-
loading. Citizens rightly smell service cuts
and job losses in that argument. Instead,
amalgarrnatiorh should be app meclhed as a
way of consolidating the two towns' re-
sources, of actually doing mote for residents
with what the towns have to work with
joindy. It should be seen as a way of creat -
mg something better, rather than just a way
of escaping the shotgun wedding the
Province is expected to eventually impose.
As for the identity part, citizens will be
able to handle it. Atter all; didn't most of
them change identities to cone here, for the
better life they saw in Ajax and Pickering?

11LDS, George Edwa
n April 7, 1997 m
He is gone but not forgotten
And, as dawns another year,
In my lonely hours of thinking,
Thoughts of him are always near.
Days of sadness will come o'er me,
Friends may think the wound is healed
But thin, little know the sorrow
That lies within the heart concealed
Sadly missed by Joan
