When Mel comes out of a meeting

vous, Mayor Parish told local business
people at the annual Mayors' Breakfast
held Thursday by the Ajax -Pickering
Board of Trade at Regalis Restaurant in
Pickering.
He explained that while everyone rec-

the city's outdated tax system had to be
adjusted. Now that it appears there will be
a financial aid plan to help small busi-
nesses in Toronto, said Mayor Parish, he
has a "sneaking suspicion it comes from
you and me".
While there were a few other com-
ments on Toronto and the Greater Toron-
to Area made by Mayor Parish and Pick-
ering Mayor Wayne Arthurs at the break-
fast, both community leaders' addresses
focused on the economic health and fu-
tures of their towns.

PICKERING — The third annual Race Relations forum Q
brought a full txxwse to the Council chamber at the Pickering ?.
Civic Complex last week.
Presented by the Pickering Advisory Committee on Race Re-
lations and Equity, the forum included mu-
sical entertainment and a play by local high
school students, essay and poetry readings
by elementary pupils, a panel discussion,
and a presentation by keynote speaker
Traci Melchor of City TV's City Pulse En-
tertainment.
Among those who attended all or part of
the evening were Pickering Mayor Wayne
Arthurs, several Council members,
Durham West MPP and Minister of Com-
munity and Social Services Janet Ecker.

Ajax youth has been charged
.after police recovered $700 in
counterfeit bills.
On Friday night at around 8
p.m., a youth entered the Mc -
"Donald's on King Street East in
Oshawa and attempted to pay for
a meal with three $10 bills. An
employee, who believed the
money to be counterfeit, called
police.
Upon arrival, officers located
the teenager.
A search of the youth uncov-
ered $706 made up of 70 coun-
terfeit $10 bills.
The Ajax youth was charged
with possession of counterfeit
money and uttering counterfeit
money.

Pickering panel targets stereotyping
During the panel presentation, stu-
dents and community representatives
were asked to comment on issues such
as stereotyping, cross-cultural relations
and minority self-image.
Durham police Constable Paul Chi-
ang told the forum he experiences
stereotyping `tion a regular basis", with
people sometimes coming up to him and
questioning his qualifications as a police
officer because he isn't "male, white, six
feet tall and 200 pounds"
Town of Pickering director of culture
and recreation Steve Reynolds said teens
are often victims of stereotyping.
"It's assumed youths together are
trouble, that youths together are a gang,"
he explained.
Guest speaker Traci Melchor noted
that when she attended Holy Redeemer
Separate School in south Pickering she
was one of only two students of colour
there and was the victim of name calling
and bullying. She told the forum today's
students are very lucky to have large
numbers of people from many cultures
in their schools. "You have so much to
learn from each other," she said.
Minorities are often victims of
racism in ways that aren't recognized,
said Ms. Melchor, citing the fact she was

festival needs helpers
for annual celebration
PICKERING — Organizers of the Frenchman's Bay
Festival are holding their next planning meeting Tues-
day, April 7 at 7 p.m. at the Durham Region Police sta-
tion at Kingston and Brock roads in Pickering.
Anyone interested in volunteering for the event or
helping sponsor it is welcome to attend.
The festival his being held Saturday and Sunday,
June 13 and 14. It has grown over the past seven years
and now includes Dragon Boat races sponsored by the
West Rouge Canoe Club, a street dance and beer garden
at the foot of Liverpool Road on Saturday, and on Sun-
day, family fun with music, a midway, a freestyle bicy-
cle display, poetry contest winners and more.

selling daffodils to aid the fight
against cancer.
The sorority will sell bouquets
of eight daffodils for $4 from
Thursday, April 2 to Saturday,
April 4 at several locations
throughout Ajax and Pickering.
Daffodil sales raised $50,153
from the community last year
and, with the growth in the area's
population, this year's goal is

Mayor Arthurs laid out the de-
tails of Pickering's economic
growth over the past year, which
included:
0 More than 1,000 building per-
mit applications amounting to
over $147 million worth of con-
strudion, a 50 -per cent increase
over 1996.
The arrival of 58 new compa-
nies, providing 240 new full-time
jobs and over 300 part-time posi-
tions.
3 Over 200,000 square feet of
expansion by local companies,
creating more new jibs.
Mayor Arthurs told the assem-
bled business people the econom-
ic picture in Pickering looks
bright for the future as well. He
noted 4here has been strong leas-
ing activity in the industrial sector
which has led to a "critical short-
age" of space which the Town
hopes will lead to industrial con-
struction in 1998. A shortage of
office space is also developing.

tions at the Pickering Town Cen-
tre, including a revamping of the
streetscape on its east side.
Mayor Arthurs said Pickering,
like Ajax, is aiming for no tax in-

from the Province on issues such
as downloading and the future of
the grant in lieu of taxes the Town
receives for the Pickering nuclear
station.
The Pickering mayor also
noted he plans to "stir the pot a
bit' on the issue of amalgamation
of services and the merger of
Ajax and Pickering, which he has
favoured.
"We have to look at all the op.-
tions

noting Pickering and Ajax al-
ready work together in areas such
as the hospital, specialized transit
and the United Way. "I think we
have to keep the dialogue open. 1.

faster and more deliberately."

leaves behind
legacy of giving
OSHAWA — Frank Wonnacott, one of
Durham Region's top business and community
leaders, died suddenly on Sunday.
Funeral for Mr. Wonnacott. 63, the president
of Cliff Mills Motors Ltd., will be Wednesday af-
temoxn.
"This is devastating to us," said Glenn Landry,
Cliff Mills' used car sales manager and a close
friend of Mr. Wonnacott.
Flags are flying at half mast at the Oshawa car
dealership which will be cloned for business to-
morrow in honour of Mr. Wonnacott, Mr. Landry
said.
"We're all going to miss him, not only in the,
business but in the community," Mr. Landry said.

scribed Mr. Wonnacott
as a sensitive man, a
"great kidder and joke-
ster" with a good sense
of humour and a love of
music, the theatre and 'ow -
fine dining. He'd just
purchased a grand
piano and was talking
about taking lessons,

"He enjoyed life," WONNACOTT
Mr. Landry said. ----- -- – --
Mr. Wonnacott also loved sports and spon
sored a number of teams, although his asthnwj
prohibited him from taking part in sports, Mc',
Landry said.
In his work, Mr. Wonnacott was dedicated to
making sure customers were well taken care of
and satisfied with their new or used vehicles, Mr.'
Landry said. He talked of Mr. Wonnacott spend-
ing hours on the showroom floor of the dealer-
ship, which sold General Motors' Buick and Pon-
tiac models. Mr. Wonnacott had been with the
dealership for 42 years, buying it in 1984.
"He was more of a fatherly figure to all his
employees. Frank had an open door policy for all
his employees, whether it was business or per-
sonal." Mr. Landry said.
"Frank spent a let of time at work," Mr.
Landry said. "He loved Cliff Mills. A lot of poo -
pie called him a workaholic: but Frank worked
out of sheer love for the dealership. He said it was
not stressful for him, it was like going on a holi-
day, he loved it so much."
Mr. Landry said Mr. Wonnacott was a role
model for his 85 employees and for GM dealer-
ships across the country. The dealership has sold
more than 4,000 cars in each of the last two years
and is one of the top 10 dealers in all of Cauda.
In 1997, Mr. Wonnacott was named business
person of the year by the Oshawa-Clanngton
Chamber of Commerce, an award he described at
the time as "humbling.,.
Mr. Wonnacott's involvement in the commu-
nity included generous gifts to many organiza-
tions including Oshawa General Hospital, the
Robert McLaughlin Gallery, the YMCA budding
fund and the Canadian Automotive Museum.
"Frank was a very, very strong supporter o
the hospital,,, said Chuck Powers, chairman o
the hospital foundation. "He's been involved in
basically every fund-raising campaign we've had
in the last 25 years. He gave generously person-
ally and encoaaged the same in his employees.,,
Mr. Wonnacott is survived by daughters An-
gela and Jacqueline, son Shawn and daughter-in-
law

law Koreen, brothers John, Bill and Stan, sisters
Marilyn and Carolyn, and grandchildren Brooke
and Kyle. He also leaves behind his companion
Debbie and her daughters Jacqueline . and
Stephanie.
Visitation at Armstrong Funeral Home will be
held today from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. with the fu-
neral Wednesday at 2:30 p.m. at Kingsview Unit-
ed Church, 505 Adelaide Ave. E.
Memorial donations may be made in Mr.
Wonnacott's name to Oshawa General Hospi-
tal.

OUR VIEWS ON THE NEWS
There's no
place for
racism
The youth of Durham Region can be proud.
Through their schools and community groups they've
proven racism is unacceptable.
This past Saturday, more than 100 teenagers turned
up at the first Youth Anti -Racism Rally in downtown
Oshawa. They spoke up and spoke out against the
spectre of racism in our communities.
Joining and encouraging these young people to take
a stand were many community leaders including the
following: Multicultural Council of Durham president
Dave Patterson, Durham Region Police Chief Kevin
McAlpine and Durham MP Alex Shepherd.
All three speakers urged students to keep up the
fight against racism.
And to prove that promotion of racism won't be al-
lowed, the justice system has taken care of two local
people who tried, over the past few years, to inculcate
the community with their hatred.
Ted Francis Beavis and Guy Carlton Mayne were
both convicted of hate crimes during the past year for
spreading hate literature throughout Durham.
The negative price to pay for racist acts is heavy.
But the positive aspect to be gained from racial toler-
ance is a better community for us all.
Goodbye to a
fine man
Durham Region lost one of its best and brightest on
Sunday as Frank Wonnacott, president of Cliff' Mills
Motors passed away. He was 63.
A staple at the Oshawa dealership where he worked
for 42 years and which he owned since 1984, Mr.
Wonnacott was judged the business person of the year
in 1997 by the Oshawa-Ciarington Chamber of Com-
merce.
Mr. Wonnacott's most lasting legacy could well be
his very strong support of Oshawa General Hospital.
He was involved for the past quarter of a century in
raising funds for Oshawa General and played a very
strong role in the Setting the Pace campaign.
Mr. Wonnacott also donated his time and money to
the Robert McLaughlin Gallery, the YMCA building
fund and the Canadian Automotive Museum. He will
be missed.

miss Grits and
Tories if they
leapt off a cliff
To the editor:
MP Dan McTeague's March 18
letter to the News Advertiser blasting
Mike Harris's Tories is just another
sad example of one politician giving
it to another and at the same time
telling us (he emits no stink when he
goes to the washroom). To be honest,
both of them could jump off a cliff
with their entire party attached and I
wouldn't miss any of them.
The Tories have shown us that
they care for us by treating the elec-
torate like a disease, to be avoided at
all costs. They avoid public input
into their decision-making process,
and then blatantly lie that we were
consulted, and pass legislation that
already has been responsible for the
deaths of citizens in this province,
and will, I guarantee, result in the
deaths of even more. Mike Harris
has all the compassion of a hang-
man's noose.
As for Mr. McTeague's party, I've
never seen so many elected represen-
tatives do so little for so long.
Please don't give me this song
and dance about balancing the bud-
get. If it was legal for me to rob poo -
pie at will (excuse me, I meant tax),
I could balance my budget too. The
Liberals have simply taxed us to un-
believable heights in order to com-
pensate for their own financial inad-
equacies. The Liberals promised to
get rid of the GST before they were
first elected, and they lied; it's as
simple as that. Mr. McTeague came
to my door before Brian Mulroney
called his last election, going on
about how Mr. Mulroney didn't have
the guts to call an election, and how
the Liberals would save us from the
GST. Well, I'm still waiting to be
saved, Dan.
And let's not forget the Young Of-
fenders Act.. How many times do
federal politicians have to be told the
YOA stops youth crime as well as
the Titanic stops icebergs? And what
about capital punishment? The ma-
jority of Canadians like me want
scum like Clifford Olsen and Paul
Bernardo put to death, but bleeding
heart pacifists like Mr. McTeague
haven't got what it takes to do the
right thing, and that's despicable!
Let me run this country. I'll show
you how it's done!

You, too,
can make
wishes
come true
Take a look around your office,
your cubicle, your home. What's hang-
ing on your walls or bulletin boards
likely says a lot about who you are.
Laura Cole is no different.
On a recent visit to her office in
Ajax, I was immediately struck by the
numerous pictures of children flashing
brilliant smiles which adorned the
walls.
One of the children was pho-
tographed with professional hockey's
Doug Gilmour and Pat Burns. Others
were with family members.
Some of the kids showed telltale
signs of illness, but many appeared to
be the picture of health.
For Ms. Cole, this is what life is
about. As executive director of the
Children's Wish Foundation of Canada
— and a pivotal force in establishing
the foundation 15 years ago — she
helps make wishes come true for chil-
dren with high-risk, life-threatening
illnesses.
While many may wonder just how
heart -wrenching it must be to work so
closely with sick children — too many
of whom will fall victim to their illness
— Ms. Cole looks at how much happi-
ness the foundation can bring to a
young life and family in an unimagin-
ably difficult time.
Trips to Disney World or Disney
Land remain favourites, while comput-
ers and big screen TVs are also popu-
lar. And hockey, baseball and special
event tickets are always appreciated as
a little extra gift.
But as Ms. Cole encourages indi-
viduals, businesses, corporations and
organizations to contribute, she knows
she is helping more than just sick chil-
dren.
It also helps those who contribute.
"When people realize they can
make such a difference in someone's
life, it makes everybody happy," she
told me.
Imagine how it would make you
feel if you could post on your bulletin
board the picture of a child whose life
you helped brighten.
