GAGNON MURDER TRIAL SUMMATIONS BEGIN
By Stephen Shaw
Durham Staff
The murders of Roger Pardy and Ken
Thomas were part of a "carefully orchestrated
plan" by two men to rob a local gun shop and
..shoot to kill" anyone who got in their way, a
jury was told yesterday.
"These people went in armed in
such a way to shoot however many
people that may be an obstacle ...
what all this shows is a complete and
utter disregard, indeed contempt for
human life," Crown attorney Greg
O'Driscoll said in his closing address.
"Compelling" evidence in the trial
proves beyond a shadow of a doubt
Ronald lames Woodcock and Roshan
Nourozah "acted in concert" as they
executed with military -style precision
a robbery for guns at Gagnon Sports
Sept. 14, 1994, Mr. O'Driscoll said.
He said the first step in their plan
was to steal a car to use in the robbery. And it
was during that crime and through nothing more
than sheer fate that Mr. Tlttomas of Pickering
crossed his killers' path, suggested Mr. O'-
Driscoll.
Mr. Thomas, 55, was last seen at a Canada
Employment Centre in Richmond Hill shortly
after noon that day, court has heard.
Some time soon after that he was "forcibly
seized" and taken to a remote area near the
Pickering Nuclear Generating Station where he
was killed "execution style;' Mr. O'Driscoll
said.
Mr. Thomas was likely forced to
kneel and shot once through the back
the neck, and three more times in the
head as he fell to the ground, the
Crown contends.
"If ever there was a first degree mur-
der scene it surely was that," said Mr.
O'Driscoll, adding jurors need not con-
clude which man pulled the trigger to
find both guilty, only that both were
involved in the killing.
The most "horrible aspect" of Mr.
Thomas's slaying was that "it could
have been any one of us," Mr. O'-
Driscoll said.
Within three hours of the killing, the
masked robbers burst into Gagnon Sports.
It is the Crown's position Mr. Woodcock was
the shorter robber who entered first and, armed
with a silenced weapon, started shooting with
"horrible efficiency."

Crown gives
CROWN/Page 3 shot within
"OK, this is it. This is a
holdup. Everybody down,"
the surviving victims testi-
fied the robber command-
ed.
He then opened fire on
those who hesitated. Em-
ployee Randy Jenkins was
shot in the arm when he
turned to the gunman and
said "You got to be joking"
and customer David Spicer
was shot in the arm and
chest when he turned to
face the robber.
The Crown alleges Mr.
Woodcock then advanced
"combat -style" towards the
counter, where Mr. Pardy
was slightly crouched and
still on the phone with cus-
tomer Ian Campbell.
Mr. Pardy managed to
whisper into the phone he
was being robbed when the
gunman shot him twice,
once in the head, killing
him.
"Is that not a cold and
deliberate act?" Mr. O'-
Driscoll put to jurors.
Customer George Har-
lampopoulos was then shot
in the head as he "ran for
his life" and a bullet just
missed the head of em-
ployee Wesley Glaspell.
Mr. O'Driscoll urged ju-
rors to reject any attempt
by the defence to portray
the shootings as a "robbery
gone bad;' noting the vic-
tims were all unarmed.
`"These people were en-
tirely defenceless;' Mr.
O'Driscoll said. 'All were

seconds... All
of the shots were fired at
the head area or the upper
body area...
"The gunman cleared a
path for Mr. Nourozali and
in doing so displayed a
willingness to shoot to kill
or shoot to wound. He shot
people without provoca-
tion."
Based on the testimony
of the victims and ballis-
tics evidence a "homemade
silencer" was used by the
gunman, indicating the
shooting was planned prior
to the robbery, the Crown
said.
Mr. Woodcock and Mr.
Nourozali have pleaded
not guilty to two counts
each of first-degree mur-
der, four counts of attempt-
ed murder and a slew of
other charges.
DNA evidence has
proved beyond a doubt Mr.
Nourozali was the robber
who smashed the gun case,
cutting himself in the
process and bleeding on a
shard of glass, and scooped
I 1 guns into a duffel bag,
said Mr. O'Driscoll.
And it was "far from
just coincidence" he and
Mr. Woodcock were seen
together leaving what the
jury has been told was a
London "clubhouse" the
morning after the robbery.
Nor was it a coinci-
dence, Mr. O'Driscoll said,

The safe contained a substantial

London, in which Mr.
Woodcock "deliberately
shot an innocent customer"
in the leg, the jury was
told.
At the time Mr.
Nourozali and Mr. Thomp-
son were in possession of
two .45 calibre semi-auto-
matic handguns stolen dur-
ing the Oshawa robbery.
Court has heard the
weapons were fired in a
string of holdups, crimes
the Crown contends were
committed by Mr. Wood-
cock and Mr. Nourozali.
Mr. O'Driscoll said the
evidence "overwhelming-
ly" points to Mr. Wood-
cock as the triggerman in
the Oshawa robbery and
not Mr. Thompson, a theo-
ry suggested by the lawyer
for Mr. Woodcock.
The descriptions given
by witnesses of the shoot-
er, Mr. O'Driscoll said, are
"bang on" with Mr. Wood-
cock's height and stature.
He agreed jurors may
wonder whether Mr.
Thompson, an avid out-
doorsman who knew Mr.
Pardy and Mr. Jenkins and
visited Gagnon Sports in
the past, had knowledge,
and possibly even involve-
ment in the robbery.
"Did Mr. Thompson
share with you perhaps
everything he really knows
about what occurred? Keep
in mind he is the lifetime
best friend pal of Mr.
Woodcock," said Mr. O'-
Driscoll, suggesting Mr.
Thompson tailored his tes-
timony to "help" Mr.
Woodcock.
"The issue is not, did
Deryck Thompson have
some level of awareness or
did he provide some infor-
mation (about the store)...
the question is was Deryck
Thompson in the store
Sept. 14?" said Mr. O'-
Driscoll, suggesting he
was not.

Pain, Pain go

backchiropractic Care
4 Stephen Utegan
Special to the news advertiser
As many as 80 per cent of us
will develop back pain in our
lifetime.
And in most cases, it's sim-
ply a case of the straw that
broke the camel's back, says Dr.
Kevin Finn, a chiropractor at the
Pickering Medical Centre.
One may attempt something
as simple as bending to tie a
shoe, and will suddenly suffer
agonizing back pain.
"Time after time, doing it im-
properly, you get small injuries
that don't heal and then they
compound upon each other, and
finally one day (you) end up
here;" says Dr. Finn.
"After you've gotten care,
you feel more alert;" says Mary
Lou Laramee, a Pickering resi-
dent and chiropractic patient.
"I feel like a lot of stress is
held inside, and that helps re-
lieve the stress. You just feel
like you've more alive."
"I would like to see people
understand what we do and
know about the conditions we
can help — backaches is one
thing, headaches is another —
and know that it's safe;' says
Dr. Finn.
"I was really anti -chiroprac-
tor;" reports Amanda Hendy of
Brooklin, who suffered sciatica
caused by her pregnancy. "At
first, it frightened me. I tried
everything else, so I thought
OK, (I'll try it as a) last resort."
Her condition trapped the
sciatic nerve, located in the hip
and thigh area, when her body
was thrown out of alignment
due to the extra weight.
She was "almost incapable of
walking, the pain (was, h.,,i I

came here (three -and -a -half
years ago) and they got rid of
the sciatica. Now (a visit to the
chiropractor) is the first thing I
do.
N(,ti in her second pregnan-
cy, Ms. Hendy has returned to
prevent the condition from re-
curring. "Within five minutes
of me walking in here with a
terrible (blinding) headache,
;ust click! and it was fine"
"There aren't really any se-
vere side effects" to chiropractic
treatments, says Dr. Finn. "It's a
lot safer than most other (treat-
ments). That's my philosophy.
Try it this way first because it's
not invasive, it's not adding any-
thing to your system. We treat
them with our own hands only.
We don't use any drugs"
"About 10 years ago, I could-
n't walk;" recalls Ms. Laramee.
A was literally crawling on my
hands and knees. I went to the
chiropractor then, and he fixed
the problem. After that, it's
more keeping your body well -
tuned. You can feel yourself
needing it. Ultimately it be-
comes almost a prevention, like
a maintenance plan"
Historically, the medical in-
dustry has looked down on chi-
ropractic care.
"A lot of it was based on not
knowing what we did and the
fact that it was different;" says
Dr. Finn.
But, "it's a lot better now," as
there is more scientific evidence
to support spinal manipulation.
"Opinions are changing. We've
got a lot of referrals from (doc-
tors). It's becoming more main-
stream."
Neil Stokes of Brooklin is
with the Metro Toronto Police
force and has seen a chiroprac-
tor since 1986.
"I think, like doctors, like po-
lice officers, there are good
ones and there are bad ones;'
says the detective, who was hurt
in an on -duty fight.
"I think you've got to shop
around. I think (my chiropractor
has) hands of gold. I'm very
body -sensitive, and he can fix
me up pretty good"
Blood donor clinics
on March 26 and 27
The hours are being extended for a two-day blood
donor clinic next week so commuters will have the
chance to give the gift of life.
The clinic is being held on Thursday, March 26 and
Friday, March 27 from 3 to 8 p.m. at the Metro East
Trade Centre, on Brock Road at Hwy. 401 in Pickering.
The goal is to collect 110 units each day.
Supplies of group O blood are extremely low. It's the
most common blood type, so it's usually the most need-
ed.
In emergencies, group O can be given to patients of
other blood types.
Each unit is divided into four components — red cells,
plasma, platelets and cryoprecipitate — so up to four
people can be treated with each donation.
_ Healthy individuals aged 17 to 70 can donate and must
rimesto ers honoured have valid identification, including one piece with a pho-
ptograph.
pDonors must wait 56 days between donations.

OUR VIEWS ON THE NEWS
Province comes
up seyes
For Ontario's charities, the provincial govern-
ment has gambled and lost. Rut it', really those
charities which rely on the proceeds from roving
casinos, who've come up red on a roulette wheel
which is supposed to show black.
In just two weeks' time, roving charity casinos
will be gone for good and so will the millions of
dollars they raise each year for charity. So, what
will replace them, you say?
At the present time, nothing is in place because
the Province, when it set its deadline of April 1,
1998 for the start-up of permanent charity casinos,
badly misjudged public opinion and the reluctance
of municipalities to welcome a permanent charity
casino in their borders.
As of this date just five of a possible 46 cities
have given the go-ahead for a permanent charity
casino. No Durham municipality has shown any in-
terest in having a permanent charity casino within
its boundaries.
Oshawa and Pickering have held referendums
which overwhelmingly showed citizens were
against the idea of a permanent site. Whitby and
Ajax councils have shown no interest in the idea.
Clarington staff are meeting with casino propo-
nents but any notion of a site is still a long way off.
The only possible and logical site in Durham would
be the Great Blue Heron Casino, already up and
running but negotiations with casino owners would
be required and a deal would have to be hammered
out.
Apart from the distaste some members of the
public have with having a permanent casino in their
midst, the real issue here is money. Municipal
politicians are frustrated that the lion's share of
cash garnered by the permanent charity casinos
will go back to the Province.
Estimates are that 44 permanent sites around
Ontario would generate $1.18 billion per year in
profits. The breakdown? The Province would get
$I billion and charities would receive just $180
million per year. Clearly, municipal leaders want
charities in their communities to get a much bigger
slice of the pie.
The Province must do the following: immediate-
ly eliminate the April 1 deadline to allow roving
charity casinos to continue operating indefinitely
so that charities don't get hurt and negotiate a fair-
er arrangement for permanent sites so that charities
get more than 16 per cent of the cut. Time is short
and the Province can't afford to let charities go
bust on a bad bet.

OUR READERS' VIEWS ON THE NEWS
Federal Liberals are
the master downloaders
To the editor:
In reference to the Feb. 15 News
Advertiser letter headlined 'Wait till
the next election, Mr. Hams': People
have short memories, or they don't
follow the news.
The writer of the letter was mad at
Premier Mike Harris because he
downloads on us. Why does nobody
mention that the federal Liberal gov-
ernment is the master downloader? If
Prime Minister Jean Chretien did not
download $2.6 billion on Mr. Harris,
Mr. Harris would not have to down-
load $2.6 billion on we Ontarians.
As for hospitals, NDP Premier
Bob Rae closed sections of the hospi-
tals but kept the empty spaces main-
tained. Not too bright! And to top it
off, he added over $30 billion plus
interest to Ontario's debt to a total of
$66 billion.
Interest paid on Canada's com-
bined (municipal, provincial and fed-
eral) debt in 1995 alone was $75 bil-
lion and Mr. Caister asks to increase
our debt, so to speak!
Remember David Peterson's Lib-
erals. They added $20 billion to On-
tario's debt, and they gave us the On-
tario bilingual language laws which

now cost the Ontario taxpayers $75
million a year, not to mention indus-
trial costs and waste of trees for
paper.
So, at the next election, who
would you vote for — someone
who'd give us more Rae/Peterson
debt or Mr. Hands, who is doing his
best to rid us of the deficit and hor-
rendous debt?
The easiest thing for Mr. Harris
would be to run us another $30 bil-
lion into debt, but unlike Mr. Rae,
Mr. Harris knows what happens
when our Visa card is overdrawn.

At least four delegations will appear be-
fore the Atomic Energy Control Board in
Oshawa next Tuesday asking for an envi-
ronmental assessment of the Pickering nu-
clear station. But for those 87 per cent of
voters who cast ballots in favour of such a
review in last November's referendum, that
could be a cause for concern instead of con-
fidence.
The problem is the delegations will all
be singing the same song, but some of the
words and the tune will be different.
Mayor Wayne Arthurs, who has been
calling for a 'broad review' of the environ-
mental impact of the station, is scheduled to
be there on behalf of the Town of Pickering.
Pickering wants an assessment of the nu-
clear plant while it continues to operate.
A representative of Durham Nuclear
Awareness, which wants the assessment
while the plant is shut down, will also be on
hand at the hearing. Both Pickering and
DNA have been sticking, separately, to their
demand for a review under the provincial
Environmental Assessment Act even
though the only response from Queen's
Park so far has been that the act doesn't
cover this situation and it all may be a fed-
eral responsibility.
The Provincial EAA option has been
more or less dismissed by another sched-
uled speaker, Ward I local Councillor Dave
Ryan, on the basis it's not likely to happen
and that if it does the Province will proba-
bly design a review that's too narrow. Coun.
Ryan, supported by Pickering -Ajax Citi-
zens Together (PACT) for the Environment
chairman Dave Steele, will call on the
AECB to support a "Joint Universities"
proposal for an environmental assessment
they have helped draw up.
Also dismissing the EAA option has
been the Town of Ajax, which is to be rep-
resented at the hearings by Mayor Steve
Parish. Ajax Council is asking die AECB to
have Hydro pay for and participate in a
"comprehensive public review of the plant
including social, economic and environ-
mental matters".
A few individual citizens are also ex-
pected to appear before the AECB in sup-
port of some kind of environmental assess-
ment.
Unfortunately, the dominant impression
W1 this might make on the AECB board is
drat folks here aren't together on this one,
which could provide the board with just
enough wiggle room to justify not ordering
an assessment. That would be a shame be-
cause residents are united — they want to
know whetter the plant is safe or not.
Would it be asking too much for everyone
to set aside their own political agendas and
.get together to provide a common front here
on something the residents they are sup-
posed to represent are clearly demanding?

Pickering Aerials sky
high over big gym meet
PICKERING — The Pickering
Aerials Gymnastics Club will play
host to athletes from as far away as
Quebec and Florida when it presents
its annual Rainbow Classic Gymnas-
tics Meet May 22 to 24.
The Rainbow Classic is fast be-
coming one of the largest invitation-
al meets in the area and is expected
(() attract more than 300 athletes rep-
resenting over 50 clubs.
While the Aerials have a fully-
cyuipped gym in Pickering, the club
has decided to hold the meet at the
Pickering Recreation Complex to ac-
rOmmodate the large crowds that are
cxpected.
Aerials' meet director Sylvia Car-
riere says the club takes great pride
in teaming up with the Pickering
community for this major gymnas-
tics undertaking.
"We are excited by the incredible
interest expressed from so many
clubs and the opportunity to work
together with our community to pull
it off in an impressive manner," she
says.
The Rainbow Classic is not only
beneficial for sport and recreation in
Pickering but also for local business-
es, notes Pickering Mayor Wayne
Arthurs, a big booster of the gym
meet.
"For manv athletes and their fam-
ilies, this may be the first time they
have travelled to an out-of-town
competition or visited Pickering. We
all have an interest in making sure
that their visit is a memorable one;'
says Mayor Arthurs.
"It's not often that we are able to
play host on such a large scale and
we are fully behind the Aerials"
Several high-profile athletes and
other celebrities from the area are
expected to participate in the awards
presentation of the Rainbow Classic
meet.
The event organizers are continu-
ing their efforts to secure local spon-
sors and supporters for the event. On
board for this year is Fortune Finan-
cial.
