A prominent outdoorsman at one
time suspected in the Gagnon Sports
murders arranged to send a "get well
card" to a survivor of the bloody
weapons heist, court heard yesterday.
But while calls of sympathy poured
in from the sporting goods world follow-
ing the death of storeowner Roger Pardy,
absent from the list of well-wishers was
Deryck Thompson, a close associate of
Mr. Pardy's has testified.
"After what happened at Gagnon's it
surprised me that someone like Deryck,
a good friend of ours, hadn't called,"
said Randy Jennings, who together with
Mr. Pardy organized the Bass'n'Tario
fishing derby.
Mr. Jennings, a former Gagnon
Sports employee, said Mr. Thompson at
one point did call and speak with his
wife, however, he still thought it was
"odd" and worth mentioning to police
investigating the Sept. 14, 1994 robbery.
On that day two masked bandits burst
into the Simcoe. Street South store, or-
dered staff and customers to the floor
then opened fire on victims who hesitat-
ed.
Mr. Pardy, 43, was fatally shot in the
head as he spoke to a customer on the
phone: three others were wounded by
gunfire.
That same day Pickering resident
Ken Thomas, 55, was abducted and mur-
dered so that his killers could use his car
in the robbery, contend Crown prosecu-
tors Bryan Davies and Greg O'Driscoll.
Ronald Woodcock, 46, and Roshan
Nourozali, 34, are on trial for both
killings and have pleaded not guilty to
two counts of first-degree murder. They
also face four charges of attempted mur-
der.

Mr. Woodcock has throughout the teal

Thomas's killer could have been Mr.
Thompson, a childhood friend of Mr.
Woodcock's, a convicted bandit and an
expert marksman.
Mr. Thompson, Mr. Woodcock and
Mr. Nourozali, a former Iranian soldier,
were arrested six months after the
Durham Region murders following a
grocery store robbery near London,
Ont., in which Mr. Woodcock shot a cus-
tomer.

and maintained he had no
knowledge of the gun's origin.
Mr. Thompson was closely
linked to the sporting goods in-
dustry, court has heard. He was
a wholesaler of fishing equip-
ment, the ' founding member
and former president of the Tri -
County Bass Masters club and
also held fishing seminars at
Fanshawe College.
"Everybody knew Deryck from his
days at Outdoors Sports (a retail fran-
chise)... He was well -liked and well-re-
spected by people in the fishing indus-
try:' testified Fritz Beck, a close friend
and London firefighter.
Another friend, Rick Hendricks, tes-
tified he was "shocked" when Mr.
Thompson was arrested for robbery. He
agreed with defence counsel Peter
Zaduk's suggestion that "Deryck
Thompson was living a double life."
Mr. Thompson immediately after his
arrest resigned from the fishing club.
"He didn't want to shame the club:' Mr.
Hendricks said.
The double -murder trial has been told
Gagnon Sports employee Randy Jenk-
ins, who was shot in the arm during the
robbery, had a long-standing friendship
with Mr. Thompson.
The pair saw each other for the first
time after the Oshawa robbery at a fish-
ing show in Toronto in February 1995,
one month before Mr. Thompson's ar-
rest.
Fishing friend William Vaughan said
he and Mr. Thompson approached the
Gagnon Sports display booth and Mr.
Thompson and Mr. Jenkins shook hands.
"I heard Deryck say `How are you'
and (Mr. Jenkins) said 'I'm not 100 per
cent yet but I'm feeling better," testified
Mr. Vaughan.

who added he does not know
whether the card was in fact
sent.

Mr. Jennings was the president and
Mr. Pardy the secretary of the Bass'n'-
Tario fishing series, which culminates
annually in a final playoff derby known
as the 'Classic'.
Mr. Jennings said he met Mr. Thomp-
son through the annual tournament and
described him as "a model competitor.
We never had a problem with him as far
as violating the rules."
Mr. Jennings testified Mr. Thompson
had previously been to the Oshawa store
in the past. Mr Thompson testified he
had not.
Mr. Jennings said Mr. Thompson
often inquired about Mr. Pardy and
would ask "how the store was doing"
And Mr. Thompson would always
call in the days following the Classic
tournament, which in 1994 fell on the
weekend before the robbery, Mr. Jen-
nings said.
But that year Mr. Thompson never
did call, Mr. Jennings testified, and he
thought that, too, was "significant"
enough to pass on to police.

Your health card is the key to service

Think of your health card as you would a
credit card. Remember to check the expiry
date and use it whenever you need it.
That's the advice from the Ministry of
Health and hospital officials due to changes
in the health card system.
Effective March I patients at doctors' of-
fices and hospitals have had to present their
health card (,r verification before every
visit. If their health card number can't be
verified, patients will be asked to pay for
health services. The only exception will be
emergencies, when patients will be treated
automatically.
"Your credit card is valuable to you, but
so is your health card. It is a valuable com-
modity — take care of it," says Lily Wee -
don, communications officer for the Min-
istry of Health.
She says doctors have always had to
have the patient's health card number, ex-
cept now patients must show it on every
visit. The change is an effort to reduce the
amount of fraud in the health care system
by people who are not eligible for coverage,
she says.
But some, like Dr. Pat Morra, are ques-
tioning the heavy-handed tactics being used
to eliminate the small amount of fraud in
the system.
"They're using a sledgehammer on a
thumb tack." he says. "It is going to incon-
venience ... patients that arc deserving and
should be treated to prevent a small number
of people who are definitely the problem.
Although she could not give statistics on
how much fraud exists in the health care
system, Ms. Weedon defended the min-
istry's new approach saying "even if it's $1,
it's $1 taken from someone who needs it.

Helen Gibson, programme leader for pa-
tient process management at Oshawa Gen-
eral Hospital supports the new requirements
saying, "That was always the expectation,
from the time the new health cards came
out, that you would show your health card.
But it was never enforced."
She agrees with Ms. Weedon, saying "I

However Dr. Morra says making doctors
validate cards before giving treatment runs
contrary to a doctor's obligation to society.
"I have some moral obligation to treat
sick people.
:On the other hand the insurance system
which is supposed to back up the patient is
letting them down," he says.
Ms. Weedon says there are a number of
ways for doctors' offices and hospitals to
check if a person's health coverage is valid.
Cards numbers can be verified: through a
machine, similar to those used to validate
credit cards; through an OHIP phone line;
or batches of card -numbers can be sent elec-
tronically overnight to the OHIP computer.
If you have a health card but have for-
gotten it, Ms. Weedon says patients can give
consent for the doctors' office or hospital to
obtain the number.
"Each doctors' office or hospital will
have their forms — the health number re-
lease form — that the patient will fill out
and sign, that allows the doctor to check if
the health card is valid," she says.
Even if a card is expired, patients should
still receive health care, says Ms. Weedon.
She explains while the card has expired the
health coverage has not. Patients will sim.

should get a new one.
Family health cards will not be issued for
use under the new guidelines, says Ms.
Weedon, adding this method is more prone
to fraud. However she does agree having
one card per family member could be diffi-
cult if a different parent is taking the chil-
dren to the doctor.
Ms. Weedon suggests the solution is for
one parent to keep the cards while the other
keeps a card with all the health card num-
bers written down, indicating there may be
some flexibility in the ministry's card pre-
sentation policy.
"You don't have to always present the
card as long as you present the number;" she
says.
Patients at the North Oshawa Medical
say they are in support of the new require-
ments as a way to reduce fraud in the sys-
tem.
"I think it's very good, " says Kitty
Smith, a health records worker at Centenary
Health Centre. "We've seen cases in the
hospital where someone is trying to pass off
someone else's health card"
Oshawa resident Kathy Castelli agrees
its a good way to reduce fraud and says
showing it at every visit isn't an inconvc-
nience.
"Not at all. You carry it in your wallet
anyway," she says.
"If you're going to a doctor you should
remember (your health card) and carry it all
the time — like your driver's licence. It's
just as important, if not more," says patient
Donna Crowley while sitting in the waiting
room.

Provincial government helps Graduates encouraged to apply to agencies

MINISTRIES JOIN FORCES TO PROMOTE TRAINING
Several provincial government min-
istries are joining together in a publicity
campaign to promote Ontario's major
youth training and employment initia-
tives.
Education Minister Dave Johnson and
Economic Development Minister Al Pal-
ladini launched the Youth Opportunities
Ontario promotion in Toronto last Friday.
"Ontario has a broad range of services
to help young people train for jobs or cre-
ate their own job and with today's launch
we are committing ourselves to better in-
form young people about the resources
available to them to help them find work,"
said Mr. Johnson.
The initial campaign includes the pro-
motion of the Ministry of Education and
Training's Job Connect and the Young
Entrepreneurs Program, a joint initiative
with the Ministry of Economic Develop-
ment, Trade and Tourism and the Royal
Bank.
"By linking programme communica-
tions to the co-ordinated Youth Opportu-
nities Ontario strategy the Ontario gov-
ernment can ensure young people know
our services are available when they need
them," Mr. Palladini said in a news re-
lease.
Job Connect aims to help young peo-
ple develop their job search skills while
the Young Entrepreneurs Program offers
aspiring small business owners between
18 and 29 a loan guarantee of up to
$7,500 along with guidance in establish-
ing a successful firm. Additional cam-
paigns in the coming weeks will focus on
the Youth Apprenticeship Program, On-
tario Summer Jobs 1998 and the Ministry
of Finance's Graduate Transitions Tax
Credit. More information about the pro-

support worker students has graduated from
Dufiarn College.
The 20 students received their personal
support worker certificates after 17 weeks of
theory and lab skills in the continuous learning
program. They also completed 180 hours of
supervised long-term care practical work and
85 hours of practical community work with a
trainer. Personal support workers promote in-
dependence, dignity and social, emotional and

Mr. Charest must
carry the flag
Should he stay or should he go?
That is the question, the only question of political im-
portance in Canada right now.
For Jean Charest, the future is now — not down the
road in some federal election after the millennium, but in
Quebec in the next year.
Surely, Mr. Charest, just 39 but an MP since 1984 and
federal Progressive Conservative leader since 1994, real-
izes the only important battle left in Canada is this coun-
try's ability to stay together. As he showed brilliantly dur-
ing the 1995 referendum fight, he and only he, can match
up head-to-head with Lucien Bouchard. All the current
polls reflect this reality — they show Mr. Charest, as head
of the Quebec Liberals would win convincingly in a
provincial election against Mr. Bouchard. And the provin-
cial election, which must be held by September of 1999
but is likely to come this fall, is what it all comes down to.
If Mr. Charest wins that election, he pushes the prospect
of any referendum into the distant future and all but kills
off Mr. Bouchard's political career.
The question for Mr. Charest is simple: can he take the
risk of leaving federal politics and possibly losing to Mr.
Bouchard? If that were to happen, his own political aspi-
rations would be snuffed out. Can Mr. Charest take the
pressure of a real, all -art fistfight for the hearts and minds
of Quebecers? Can he handle being premier? Should he
come to his country's rescue now? There's little doubt a
decade or so down the road, he'll get a chance to run for
prime minister.
But politics and destiny are made of moments like
these. Why be in public life at all if not to make a differ-
ence? And what bigger difference can be made than, quite
literally, saving one's country. While Mr. Charest is natu-
rally enough, uncomfortable with the role of saviour,
that's a role he'll have to take on. Mr. Bouchard has no
problem with the mantle of being Quebec's mart -of -the -
hour — he needs an equal who can match him during the
cauldron of a provincial election.
It's perhaps one of the biggest ironies of the current sit-
uation that back in the mid and late 1980s, Mr. Charest
and Mr. Bouchard were on the same team, cabinet minis-
ter's in Brian Mulroney's conservative government. Poli-
tics makes for no stranger bedfellows than this pair. 'Inose
who criticize Mr. Charest for jumping parties should re-
member Mr. Bouchard has been a member of practically
every party ever created and that he beat Mr. Charest in
jumping from federal politics to the provincial scene. Mr.
Charest has no cause for worry here.
It's clear that if Quebec separation didn't die with Rene
Levesque or Jacques Parizeau it won't die with Lucien
Bouchard. It's here to stay. But Mr. Charest can push it
into the background again and do his country a great ser-
vice by becoming Quebec Liberal leader. It's the choice
he must make.

Three local governments
better than nine
To the editor.
Should the Durham chairman be
directly elected or appointed by Re-
gional Council? Who cares? An ei-
ther/or question is useless. If you are
on death row, would you rather be shot
or hung? Clearly, neither! The Region-
al chairman should neither be elected
nor appointed.
Democracy, economy and the well-
being of Durham citizens is best
served without a Durham chairman or
a Regional Council.
The logic for regional government
has evaporated. We don't need Re-
gional Councils to impose dumps, air-
ports and urban sprawl on local com-
munities. Times have changed. We
don't need nine municipal govern-
ments in Durharn — nine councils,
nine clerks, nine planning directors,
nice legal departments, mine chief ea-
gineers, etc. ad ntausarn. We can't af-
ford nine local governments.

by and Claringtom Crease a new city

ing, Oshawa and Whitby with Scugog,
Uxbridge and Brock into one strong

able democratic government. The po-
lice commission co-ordinates security
services. Committees of the munici-
palities can co-ordinate those few
inter -municipal services needing co-
ordination that aren't the responsibili-
ty of the Minister of Municipal Af-
fairs.

natural, for the Regional clerk or
Council to recommend the abolish-
ment of their jobs, we have to depend
on the Progressive Conservatives at
Queen's Park to apply their "common
sense" revolution in the interests of the
taxpayers of Ontario.

Club offers
gym -dandy
fun for
25 years
Whether it's just for fun or a stepping
stone to becoming the next Kerri Strug
or Lori Strong, the youth of Ajax have
been well served by a local club marking
a milestone this year.
The Ajax Acro's Gymnastics Club is
celebrating its 25th anniversary. And, a
quarter-century after its inaugural year in
1973, the club is as strong as when it
began serving Ajax's youth. It currently
boasts a membership of 450 gymnasts
and 25 coaches.
The Ajax club began as the Great Pine
Ridge Gymnastics Club, the brainchild
of local residents Isabelle Graham-Red-
shaw and Tent' Pye. It was originally
based in several schools before making
its home at a small industrial unit on Fin-
ley Avenue in Ajax for several years. The
Acro's have been in their current perma-
nent location at the St. Andrew's Com-
munity Centre at 25 Exeter Rd. for the
past 12 years.
Previously a provincial -level club
where athletes could train for the right to
compete at the Ontario championships,
the Ajax Acro's club is now largely a
recreational one where youngsters can
learn the finer points of gymnastics
while competing against their peers from
other area clubs which also offer recre-
ational programmes.
The club recently returned from the
fourth annual Winterfest Gymnastics
Competition at the North Halton Hills
Gymnastics Club in Georgetown with
more accolades. Twelve Acro's gym-
nasts competed and one, Candice
Cordeiro, returned with a special award
for the highest overall score.
The Acro's are a parent -volunteer,
non-profit organization, offering three
recreational sessions per year, along with
summer camps, birthday parties and
competitive programmes. The third ses-
sion for recreational gymnastics starts on
April 5 with registration on March 30
and April I from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. at
the club.
The club is planning several functions
before the end of the season to celebrate
25 years of providing youngsters with
fun, fitness and gymnastics.
The Acro's have been an integral part
of the sporting fabric of Ajax for a long
time. Let's hope kids continue to hone
their gymnastics skills there for many
years to come.

Judi Longfield
A new MP in a new riding

Last June voters in south Ajax and all
of Whitby cast their ballots to choose the
first Member of Parliament for the new
riding of Whitby -Ajax.
When the votes were counted, rookie
Liberal candidate Judi Longfield had
twice as many votes as her nearest com-
petitor.
Mrs. Longfield, who's been active in
politics for over three decades, most re-
cently as the councillor for Ward 2 in the
town of Whitby, soon found herself in Ot-
tawa looking for the office she'd just won.
"It was overwhelming. My heart was
pounding but I don't think 1 was fright-
ened.
"You look around and say, 'I belong
here, now how do I get to where I'm
going?'," says Mrs. Longfield of her first
few days in office. "I felt like I needed
bread crumbs and a guide rope to get me
from here to there"
Several months later she has settled in
comfortably, her Ottawa and Whitby of-
fices are operating in synch and she's
overcome most of the rookie MP obsta-
cles.
Now she's ready to address an issue
that she readily admits has been dogging
her:
"I'm suffering a lot from 'Where is she
and why isn't she out in the communi-
ty?'," says Mrs. Longfield, sitting in her
constituency office in the West Lynde
Plaza in Whitby.
In town recently, she took some time to
explain who she is and why she seems to
have a low profile.
"I had to make a decision about what
was more important for the community —
to get a couple pieces out to say, 'Here I
am, call me,' or do some real research on
what it was I'd be able to do in office,"
says Mrs. Longfield.
She chose to spend much of her first
few months in office learning the ropes,
poring through the procedures and famil-
iarizing herself with the various federal
bodies and their powers and limitations.
"I think that ultimately that's going to
allow me to serve the residents here much
better."
Although Mrs. Longfield may be a
rookie MP she has plenty of political ex-
perience to fall back on. She's been active
in the Liberal party since 1965.
She was the executive assistant to for-
mer MPPs Allan Furlong (now her execu-
tive assistant) and Steve Mahoney (now a
fellow Member of Parliament in the

In 1996 she was the campaign manager
for Dalton McGuinty in his successful bid
for the leadership of
the provincial Lib-
eral party.
Mrs. Longfield
entered the fray her-
self when she decid-
ed to run for munic-
ipal office in 1991.
She was elected
councillor for Ward
2 in Whitby in the
1991 municipal
election and re-
tained the position
by acclamation in
1994.
Even as a child
growing up in Tim-
mins, Mrs. Long-
field was politically
active.
"My mother tells
stories of when I
was four or five
years old organizing
kids in the back-
yard," she says. "I'm fairly opinionated
but I also think that if you feel strongly
about something you have to get in and do
something about it. I'm not the kind to sit
on the sidelines and
complain."
Mrs. Longfield
also doesn't shy
away from difficult
issues. She's op-
posed to abortion
rights, capital pun-
ishment (both prior
to and after her
brother, an OPP offi-
cer, was killed on
duty) and legalizing
marijuana for medi-
cinal uses.
Contrary to par-
liamentary custom,
she has no hesitation
in saying she would
vote against the
party on an issue she
doesn't agree with.
And on an issue
of importance to a
constituency sand-
wiched between two
nuclear power plants, Mrs. Longfield says

she is "generally supportive" of nuclear
power, but admits there have been prob-
lems and the industry needs tighter regu-
lations.
The hard part of the political game is
trying to act on your decisions.
"There's always frustrations, things
move too slowly, there's a lot of red tape
and when you see that something needs
adjustment or change you can't do it im-
mediately," she notes. Mrs. Longfield
would like to see a simplified system, but
at the same time stresses the value in all
the checks and balances worked into the
:vstem.
Another difficulty is trying to establish
yourself when you're a rookie MP.
There's still a bit of the old boys' net-
work but (rather than male against fe-
male) it runs rookie (versus) second
term;' she says of the parliamentary hier-
archy.
"It's much more difficult because there
are fewer rookies than in 1993. It's really
been learning as we go along"
It's here that Mrs. Longfield's experi-
ence has been a real asset.
"1'm luckier than some of the first -term
MPs because I've been involved in the
system for a long time and I know most of
the ministers.
"There's (already) a working relation-
ship so I can call them up and simply say,
'I need to know something about your
ministry and I need to know who to speak
to if I've got problems."'
Her previous experience has also
helped in her other life — as a wife and
mother.
"Living in another city for five days of
the week has taken some adjustment," ad-
mits Mrs. Longfield, "but I actually spent
the first six months of my marriage living
in northern Ontario (teaching) while my
husband was in Toronto. We kind of
laughed because we've been through this
before"
She tries to be in this area as much as
her schedule allows and comes home
every weekend to be with her husband
Alan, a principal with the North York
Board of Education, and son Michael.
Even when in Ottawa, she is accessi-
ble. Her constituency office is open from
9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday to Friday; she
was among the first MPs to launch a per-
sonal website (www.durham.net/–judi-
long/— but be warned because with all
the pictures it is quite slow); and like all
MPs, constituents can send mail to her in
Ottawa free of charge through Canada
Post.

She is running frantically
from them, faster and faster
through the dense, shadowy
woods.
It is a maze of shrubs and
trees with limbs that lunge at
her and knots which holler
her name. She tries to scream
but no sound escapes her lips.
She can hear her predators'
feet sloshing on the dewy for-
est floor just seconds behind
her.
She bolts straight up in
bed. Her heart is pounding.
Her palms are sweating.
She could swear it was
real, but the instant relief of
awakening confirms it was
only a dream.
Perhaps she will forget her
dream before the morning, or
share it with colleagues dur-
ing a coffee break.
Like this woman, we all
dream, but some people just
don't remember their dreams,
says Dr. Michael Teehan.
"Dreams are very personal
sorts of experiences — pri-
vate and internal," he says.
"Some people think they
don't mean anything, but I
think they mean things."
The Whitby psychologist
says he has an interest in
dreams because he dreams
and because other people's
dreams help him understand
those people.
What do dreams mean?
"There is a part of a theory
of dreams that (says) some of
what we dream during the
night is just residue of things
that happened during the
day."
However, Dr. Teehan be-
lieves dreams may have deep-
er meaning.
Two people might have the
exact same dream, but it
could mean completely dif-
ferent things. It all depends
on the person and their situa-
tion, he says.
For example, "Sometimes

Dr. Teehan notes that our
personalities sometimes re-
flect what we dream.
He reports that, among the
most common dreams are
those about loved ones
who've died, material losses
and gains, attaining posses-
sions we don't have, and
being persecuted.
But it remains a mystery
why we dream at all.
"We don't know;" Dr. Tee-
han says.
"Some people think we
,cream because we have wish-
-, that have to be represented.
Some people think it's a way
it :onnecting one part of our
hind with another part. Some
people think that we just
dream for no reason"
Dr. Teehan notes another
theory suggests dreams are a
result of biochemicals in the
brain changing throughout
the night.
"But nobody really
knows."
What is known is that we
dream when we are closest to
being awake, Dr. Teehan
says, and never when we're in
a deep sleep.
Although the opinions
vary on why we dream and
what purpose dreams serve,
he is confident dreams serve a
function.
Dreams are "some sort of
communication with our-
selves.
"It is part of us. I've never
known nature to do some-
thing that is unnecessary
but maybe it does."
At the very least, dreams
can provide interesting con-
versation ... if we could only
remember when we awoke
what we'd dreamed.

captured its best -of -five OMHA
playoff series over the
Quinte Red Devils
with a 5-4 home -
ice win Monday
night.
The victory
completed the
series with Ajax -
Pickering coming out on top three
games to one.
The Ryder Integrated Logistics
bantams now await for their sec-
ond -round series to begin. A win in
this series will put Ajax -Pickering
into the OMHA championship in
Richmond Hill March 20 to 22.
The Raiders overcame an early
3-0 deficit and a 4-2 setback after
two periods with a sparkling three -
goal, third -period effort to claim
the come -from -behind win.
Ajax -Pickering won the first
game at home 8-3, then lost the
second game in Belleville 6}2. The
Raiders won the critical third game
in Madoc by a 54 score.
The Raiders finished the regu-
lar Eastern Ontario league sched-
ule in fifth place with a mark of
15-9-4.
A highlight to the season thus
far has been a trip to Cornell Uni-
versity in Ithaca, New York where
the players were introduced to uni-
versity life, NCAA hockey and
scholarship possibilities. On their
return home, the Raiders' bantams
beat Syracuse twice in exhibition
games.

The Durham West Lightning
novice 'A' rep girls' hockey team
won the gold medal at its own
tournament this past weekend.
But, the gold medal didn't
come easy as the championship
game needed a shoot-out to decide
the winner between Durham West
and a stubborn Mississauga
squad.
Durham led 2-1 late into the
third period but, with nine sec-
onds remaining in regulation time,
Mississauga scored to tie the
game, forcing a shoot-out. The
Lightning outscored Mississauga
2-1 in the shoot-out to capture the
title. Joanne Ogilvie and Kaitlyn
Doherty scored for Durham West
in the shoot-out. Ogilvie scored
both regulation -time markers.
The novice Lightning started
the event by playing to a 1-1 tie
with London. Jamie Tostik scored
the lone goal, assisted by Doherty
and Jennifer Wakefield.
Midget Raiders lose close race for playoff spot
The Ajax -Pickering Raiders
Dr. Toms `AAA' midget rep hock-
ey team ended up out of the East-
ern Ontario league playoffs this
season after splitting its last two
league contests.
The Raiders needed three of
four points in their final two
games to make the Eastern On-
tario Triple `A' playoffs, but lost
3-1 to Barrie while defeating
Whitby 4-1.
In the contest with Barrie
where Ajax -Pickering needed a
win or tie to stay alive in the play-
off hunt, the squad couldn't hang
on to a 1-1 tie with two minutes
remaining in the contest. The
Raiders' lone goal was scared on
the powerplay by Pat Elder, as-
sisted by Oliver Lopez.
The Raiders played the spoil-
er's role to the hilt in a contest
against the Whitby Wildcats.
Whitby needed to defeat Ajax -
Pickering in order to nail down a
playoff spot. However, the
Raiders posted the 4-1 win.
Ajax -Pickering was 'led in the
Whitby game by team captain T.J.
Kemp with a three-point contest
(two goals, one assist), including
the game -winning marker. Pat
Elder and Dave `Moose' Visconti
scored insurance markers. Adding
assists were bantam call-up Jason
Travis, Lopez, Aaron Laderman
and Allan Mcisaac. Goalie Lader -
man turned away 31 shots in the
victory.
The midget Raiders will close
out the season by playing in the
Richmond Hill Toyota Cup
Midget Tournament during the
March Break.
Durham West then handily de-
feated Scarborough 7-1 in the
second game. Ogilvie net-
ted four goals, followed
by Wakefield with two
and Schancy
Marescaux with one.
Mississauga de-
feated the Lightning
3-1 1n the third
game. Doherty scored the Ione
goal.
The Durham West novices re-
ceived outstanding goaltending
from Danielle Apps and solid de-
fensive play by Kirsten Roach,
Stephanie Nakamura.

The Lightning took a bite out
of the Barrie Sharks 4-1 in the
title tilt of the Durham West
Girls' Hockey Association's
fourth annual invitational Tour-
nament at the Pickering Recre-
ation Complex.
To earn a berth in the title
game, the peewee Lightning
posted a 2-1 record in round-
robin play, dropping the opener
to Barrie 1-0, then rebounding to
defeat the Ottawa Capitals 2-0
and the Kingston Kodiaks 4-0.
The team defence was out-
standing throughout the tourna-
ment as the Lightning posted a
goals -against average of .50.
Goaltender Sarah Long was sharp
throughout the tourney, earning
two shutouts.
