one year.
The committee made the
recommendation Friday
(Feb. 27) in response to a
request from Ontario Hydro
to select a lab unaffiliated
with the provincial utility to
perform the tests.
Independent testing of drink-
ing water was requested by
the Town of Pickering sever-
al months ago.
Hydro originally asked
Pickering ni select the lab.
but the ToN n h:a told Hydro
it doesn't ham the expertise
IndepelWant testing of water is being recommended to
determine tritium levels in local drinking water.
to do so, while Hydro has
maintained the independence
of the testing might be ques-
tioned if the provincial utility
selected the lab.
Members of the commit-
tee were uncertain as to
whether Pickering wars seek-
ing routine outside testing, or
wanted it done only during
spills, accidents or emergen-
cies. They also wondered
whether Pickering had been
made aware independent
testing of weekly composite
samples of water from local
water plants is already done
by the provincial Ministry of
Labour. Hydro does its own
testing as well.
Committee chairman and
Durham Region Medical
Officer of Health Dr. Robert
Kyle suggested Pickering
and its residents may be
looking for the testing to be
done by some party other
than Hydro or the govern-
ment, since there may be
some suspicion of having a
government agency do it.
The Environmental
Isotope Lab at the University
of Waterloo is being recom-
mended to conduct the inde-
pendent testing, because it is
the closest of the three labs
which were identified as hav-
ing the technological capaci-
ty to do it.

?COSTCO EMPLOYEES TIED UP DURING RAID BY MASKED BANDITS MONDAY NIGHT
AJAX — Four Ajax wholesale store
employees were shaken up but not injured
Monday night after being tied up by two
hooded robbers, one armed with a semi-
automatic handgun.
The robbers hid in the store for almost
two hours after closing before making their
move. Durham Regional Police say.
Sergeant Jim Grimley says the suspects
came out of hiding in the Costco Wholesale
Canada on Kingston Road East at about
10:20 p.m., rounded up the store's remain-
ing staff at gunpoint and began tying them
up.
The suspects then fled with a quantity of
cash and jewellery.
Both suspects are described as male,
black, 25 to 30 years of age, wearing bala-
clavas and dark clothing.
One of the men is about five -feet six -
inches tall and 150 pounds.
The second suspect is described as being
about five -feet 10 -inches tall and 170
pounds.
Police are asking anyone with informa-
tion about this robbery or who had noticed
a silver -coloured car parked between
Costco and the Ajax Cinema at the time of
the incident to call police at 579-1520 or
Crime Stoppers at 116 -TIPS.

Community
policing
and you
Durham Regional Police came before Pickering
Council Monday with an encouraging message:
They want to make sure the communities of Ajax
and Pickering "not only feel safe, but are safe.-
To
afe"To that end (and to the Durham police force's
credit if it can live up to that lofty goal), police
officials here are doubling their efforts to ensure
accountability, familiarity and continuity in their
patrol zones.
It's part of the shift here toward so-called com-
munity policing in which officers are seen more in
the neighbourhoods they serve, in which residents
can come to know who is serving and protecting
them, and in which the bad guys will have to think
twice about committing a crime on Constable John
or Jane Doe's beat.
And perhaps the most significant step in that
direction is a pledge from Inspector Greg Mills on
Monday night to assign officers to specific patrol
zones for three-year periods.
That commitment will allow police officers to
acquaint themselves with the people in their com-
munities. This move replaces traditional schedul-
ing policies in which officers are randomly
assigned to patrol areas, which do little to provide
a true sense of ownership or a sense of accom-
plishment.
This is the latest attempt by Durham Regional
Police Service officials to fight crime by moving
to prevent it. By becoming a familiar and con-
tributing member of a community, police presence
is likely to be more welcomed, and certainly more
appreciated.
Police, says Insp. Mills, "want a more perma-
nent solution;' to keeping crime down in Ajax and
Pickering.
As it stands now, there are community policing
stations in both Ajax and Pickering. Though the
presence is more complete in Pickering (with the
amalgamation of the Ajax and Pickering stations
last year). the intent of these changes are hon-
ourable and achievable.
But we have an obligation as well to take an
active part in this initiative.
Whether a home owner or a shop owner. we
should get to know who the officer is patrolling in
our neighbourhood.
We should remain aware of our surroundings
and pay attention to what doesn't 'feel' right. If we
participate — even peripherally — in the ongoing
battle against crime. we all benefit in the end with
reduced crime rates, a better quality of life, and a
police force we can be proud of.
We all have a stake in it. As Insp. Mills says, we
can live and work in our communities of Ajax and
Pickering which "not only feel safe, but are safe"

We live in a wonderful country that

We arc your neighbours, your friends,

Generous as our compensation

Unfortunately, nen-unionized workers
have little leverage when it comes to

We all want the carne things — a

When Sheri Cotton switched edu-
cation paths to pursue a diploma in
respiratory therapy, her research
indicated she was going into a "new
and upcoming field.
"The opportunities were supposed
to be great:" says the Whitby resi-
dent, who had been pursuing a uni-
versity degree before opting for a
diploma that would give her hands-
on skills.
Today, she takes courses in car-
diopulmonary resuscitation to try
and keep some of her skills fresh.
She also volunteers at the Lung
Association of Durham Region and
helps out in a recreational pro-
gramme at a home for the aged.
But the 25 -year-old has been
thwarted in her attempts to find full-
time work. In discussions with those
in the field. she fears "with all the
cutbacks and changes to health care,
there aren't a lot of opportunities for
new grads.
"Everything is in limbo right now.
No one knows what's happening
with hospital restructuring"
Further, in the interviews she has
landed for part-time and casual posi-
tions. Ms. Cotton has been told
repeatedly by employers that she
lacks work experience.
"It's really frustrating:' she
admits. "You invest a lot of money
and a lot of time and energy with
hopes... that you'll find a job. It's not
like I'm looking for a way to make a
million dollars. I really feel like I'm
spinning my wheels.-
She
heels"She is putting small hopes on a
programme called Job Opportunities
for Youth, under which 60 per cent
of a participant's salary would be
covered by the federal government
for one year. The employer is
expected to make the position per-
manent after that period.
As a new class of respiratory
therapists prepares to graduate this
spring, Ms. Cotton is aware competi-
tion will soon get tougher.
"1 gave myself a year to find
something in my field that I'm
happy with. !t',. fast approaching,
but I haven't looked down the road
as to what's next.**

Admittedly,
"it's hard not
to despair' after a lengthy job
search, notes career and employment
officer Angie Paisley of The Career
Shop — which is located at the
Durham College campus in Oshawa
but serves anyone looking for work.
But it's not uncommon for a job
search to take two to 10 months,
reports Ms. Paisley, who encourages
those looking for work to organize
their job search like a job — eight
hours a day. Monday to Friday.
During that time, they can visit
local libraries to look at industry
directories and develop a network of
contacts to draw upon.
"Meet people in the field. Call
and ask if you can talk to someone
to get advice on your career path. It
will prompt people to help. They
may be able to help lead you in the
right direction"
Job seekers should also take
advantage of services like those
available at The Career Shop, where
they can get help writing resumes,
learn how to handle an interview and
how to do a job search. The centre
also offers a computer-assisted
career planning programme.
Services range in price from about
$25 to $75 each.
Similar services are offered at the
YMCA's Employment Resource
Centre in Pickering, where many
graduates looking for employment
"tend to be unaware of the resources
available to assist them in their job
search:" according to spokesman
Tina Doyle.
Resources there include access to
the Internet, computers, a laser print-
er, phone service. business direcio-
ries,job bank. career assessment
tools, workshops. a resume cri-
tiquing service and job clubs.
But many graduates have two
part-time jobs which "tends to limit
their job searching time for full-time
employment:' notes Ms. Doyle.
As job seekers become more
organized in their search for employ-
ment. they need to schedule "time
for themselves" at the end of the
day, Ms Paisley suggests.
At the same time. "It's important
for people looking for a job to sur-
round thcroselvcs with encouraging
people;' suggests Ms Paisley. "The
last thing they want to keep hearing
is. 'Have you found a ph yci'"'

grads find work
While unemployment and undcremploy-
rnent among university and college graduates
remains a concern f(w many, Durham College
graduates appear to be enjoying great success.
Of last year's 1,182 graduates, 85.9 per
cent are employed and another 9.8 per cent
have gone on to further education, director of
career and employment services Margaret
Greenley reports.
In fact, "we're running into skills shortages
is a number of areas" says Ms. Greenley. The
hottest diploma courses include mechanical !
engineering technology, electronics, public
relations, operations management, food and
beverage, and mechtronics.
While Ms. Greenley credits "a significant
improvement in the job market' with helping
ensure graduates find work, she believes the
college also deserves credit because "we are
very pro -active in assisting our graduates in
getting employment.
"We aggressively seek employment oppor-
tunities and train our graduates on how to do a
proper job search "
Arid graduates are ready to work immcdi-
ately, maintains Ms. Greenley, who believes
"employers are looking for someone who
walks in the door and starts producing right
away. That's the expectation in today's job
market:'
While employers are looking for tangible
skills, they also want good communication,
leadership, group and interpersonal skills,
says Ms. Greenley.

Too old
to serve
effectively?
TORONTO — When is a
member of the legislature tux) old
for the job? A controversy has
arisen because two Liberal MPPs
are fighting for the right to run in a
new riding in an election likely next
year and one has suggested the
other is so old he should step aside.
Monte Kwinter and Annamarie
Castrilli both want to run in York
Centre riding, into which parts of
their current ridings will be merged.
Mr. Kwinter. who is a former min-
ister and 66, has complained to
Liberal leader Dalton McGuinty
that Ms. Castrilli is telling residents
she can better represent the new rid- i
ing because of his age.
Mr. Kwinter says Ms. Castrilli is
adding that if voters elect him. he
will 'be an MPP until the ripe old
age of 71.' Mr. Kwinter says sug-
gesting people can no longer make
a useful contribution after their
mid -60% denigrates all senior citi-
zens and could hurt the Liberal
party.
Ms. Castrilli, 48, has denied
refemng to Mr. Kwinter's age, but
Mr Kwintcr says he still gets
reports from tete riding that she and
her supporters arc raising it. Mr.
Kwintcr says no constituent has
ever suggested to his face that he is
too old, although he rcccntly
received anonymous letters. which
he feels are inspired by Castrilli
supporters, saying he is old and
weak and 4tonuld retire to Florida.
Mr Kw inter says he is in his Ieg-
&stature voice by 7.30 a.m. each day
— earlier than most %IPP, — and
works long hours. He feels age
should not be a reason to vote
i
against someone unless it is shown
to affect adversely his health and
performance.
Charges that an MPP is too old
are virtually unheard of around the
legislature because thou making
them would be seen as insulting
seniors, who have many votes. Mr
Kwtnter's attendance record at the
legislature as better than that of
most MPPs. He was a mostly rch-
able consumer minister in the gov-
ernment of Premier David Peterson
in the 1980h, when keeping out of
trouble was itself a feat.
In opposition. Mr Kw inter is net
high-profile. but listened to because
he usually is well-informed. He has
taken a lead in promoting alterna-
tive medicine despite hostility by
doctors and in criticizing the
Progressive Conservative govern-
ment of Premier Mike Harris for
%:rapping direct financial incentives
to business, and is at least as active
as Ms. Castrilli.
In politics there has been a fetish
for youth, particularly since the rise
of the Kennedys. Tory William
Davis, Liberal David Peterson and
New Democrat Bob Rae all became
premiers in their early 40s and Tory
Mike Harris took control at age 50.
The only recent premier elected
at a more -advanced age was Tory
Frank Miller, who was 57.
But there also is not much to
show that age impairs politicians'
performances.
Winston Churchill was prime
minister until the age of 81 and
Ronald Reagan was president until
78.
Canada's first prime minister, Sir
John A. Macdonald, died in office
at 76 and New Democrat Stanley
Knowles remained such an asset as
an MP in his late 70s the Commons
made him an honorary officer.
In the legislature, former NDP
leader Donald MacDonald is a con-
spicuous example of contributing at
a later age. He generously gave up
his seat at an untimely 68 to provide
one for new leader Rae, but stayed
as party adviser, chaired the com-
mission on election spending,
taught politics in university and at
84 still writes more frequent and
lucid defences of the left in newspa-
pers than anyone else.
Premier Harris, who has been
guided by so-called whiz kids in
their 20s and 30s and now finds
himself in trouble, has recalled a
communications expert, now aged
64, who worked for P•emier John
Robarts in the 1960s to upgrade his
image for an election. Clearly, not
everyone thinks all virtues arc in
youth.

Same as the underdogs against the
Pickering High School Trojans at
Durham College in Oshawa on
Thursday at 8 p.m. The Trojans

Fast forward

three-point lead.
Again. Patncio

ing. The Monarchs missed a shot
to tic the game and after DO'C
recovered the rebound they fouled
the DO'C player to send the
Chargers to the line with the
game In the balance. DO'C was
able to convert only one free
throw to give the Monarchs a
chance for the three-point play.
"it was a great game. DO'C
deserved to win it as much as we
did:' says Gordenky.
Guard Luka Krallevic scored
27 points to lead the St. Man
attack. Jason D'Rocha rcpllcd

Gordensks acknowledges his
Monarchs w ill be in tough against
the heavily favored defending
champs from Pickering High in
the LOSSA title game. However,
he says his team has a shot al an
upset in the one-gamc, winner -
take -all final.
-I'm confident we can play a
go od game and squeak one cwt:'
he says. "They're definitely the
team lit beat as they've been all
season long. But. it's one game
and anybody can win one game"
Andy Mitchell was Pickering

victory over Father Leo Austin
