Polonsky hails
`landmark' budget

Listening to the budget speech from the public gallery in
the House of Commons last week almost brought Durham
College president Gary Polonsky to tears.
Mr. Polonsky, who was in Ottawa chairing a conference on
college and university relations, said he "decided at the last
minute it might be fun to go to the House and listen to the bud-
get speech" on what he called a "landmark day" for the coun-
try-
However, while he says he expected good news in the bud-
get, he adds he had no idea he would be so personally pleased
with what he heard.
In delivering the first balanced bud-
get the nation has seen in decades, Fi-
nance Minister Paul Martin made note
of Durham College while unveiling de-
tails of the Millennium Scholarship
Fund, a programme designed to in-
crease access to post -secondary educa-
tion for students across the country.

right to look to education as being probably the rwriber-one
solution to getting Canada to being prosperous.

students who will be benefitting directly and personally" from
the scholarship fund and says overall the budget was good
news.

With any luck, the worst of the flu is
over.
For the past several weeks, Durham
Region, along with the rest of Ontario,
has been hit hard with influenza.
Schools and workplaces have noticed
higher absenteeism rates as the flu ex-
erted its influence.
But health officials hero are hoping
the flu has peaked as the number of
people showing up at clinics and emer-
gency departments or missing from
work or school seems to be on the de-
crease.

Grapes, cherries ... hearts?
No, it's not a losing result at the slots,
rather Grapes' Don Cherry's restaurant
in Whitby came up a big winner in The
Valentine's Day Heart and Stroke fund-
raiser.
"The results are"incredible!" says Jim
Fairman, a Heart and Stroke Foundation
West volunteer co-ordinator from Ajax.
Forty-nine restaurants, pubs and one
nursing home have raised money for the
Heart and Stroke Foundation by selling
dedicated hearts and entering their cus-
tomers in a draw for a free dinner for
two. "Ibe event is successful because of
the enthusiastic support from the restau-
rants and the donors from the communi-
ty," continues Mr. Fairman.
"We would like to recognize the
restaurant co-ordinators and managers
who provide the `behind the scenes' sup '
port to the servers. They deserve a great
deal of credit for the success"
This year's results were a 64 per cent
increase over 1997. The winning team
from Don Cherry's sold 2,476 hearts
earning $400 worth of advertising in the
Ajax/Pickering News Advertiser, donat-
ed by Heinz and The News Advertiser.
Gallantry's Eatery in the Pickering
Town Centre placed a close second sell-
ing 2,300. Other honourable mentions
for selling over 800 hearts include Honey
Garlic and Pickles, both in Ajax and
Papp's of Pickering.
Awards were also given to the top
fund-raising servers. First place and a
wind suit donated by The Sports Author-
ity in Whitby went to Brenda Murphy

ment.
Ms. Megesi says children and the el-
derly are the most vulnerable to flu and
flu complications. There have been sev-
eral flu outbreaks in nursing homes in
Durham Region but these have been
handled effectively by outbreak man -
am meat plans, she says. There are no
reported deaths due to the flu, she adds.
Ms. Megesi says the Au does seem
to be more prevalent this year. Ontario
statistics show 567 lab -confirmed cases
of influenza A in the province in the
1996-97 flu season. To date this season,
there have been 752 confirmed cases,
she says. She doesn't have numbers yet
for Dutclrarn this year and adds there aro
no confirmed cases of Sydney A. which
is a new flu strain, in the region.
Symptoms of. the flu include
headaches, fever, aches, sore, dry throat
and cough. The best thing to do is stay
home (some people have nussed up to
seven days of work or school), drink
Iots of fluids and get plenty of rest, Ms.
.1Negesi says. Wash your hands fr+e-
yuently, cough into a tissue and avoid
as much contact as possible with other
;people in order to avoid spreading the
=:virus.,
People with chronic health condi-
tions and the elderly are advised to get
a flu shot before flu season, although
;that's not a guarantee, she says.
The Heart and Stroke Foundation's Durham West chapter honoured local
restaurants which took part in their Say it with Hearts campaign which
helped raise thousands of dollars for the cause. Winning participants rec-

Nuclear plant chief loves a,'C'hallenge

Gene Preston and the Pickering Nuclear
Station are apparently a match made in heaven.
"I get a great deal of satisfaction out of the
excitement of solving problems," says the man
appointed last August to turn around the per-
formance of a station plagued by accidents,
spills, shutdowns, bad reviews and controver-
sy. "It's more interesting working down here,"
he adds, pointing to the Pickering plant's lowly
position on a graph illustrating the relative per-
formances of nuclear stations across' North
America. "Iris is where the fun is."
For Mr. Preston, who turns 51 on Manch 18,
it's been a long but relatively straight road to
where the fun is at the helm of what is proba-
bly the most ambled nuclear station in Cana-
da
He was born and raised by -middle-class
parents" in Detroit, Michigan and knew as a
teenager he wanted to work in the nuclear in-
dustry.
"When I was a young fellow we were all
hearing about how the nuclear plants would be
the power of the future. This was the chance to
get in very early on something new and excit-
ing." After high school Mr. Preston headed
straight into the research reactor training pro-
gram offered by the University of Michigan in
association with Detroit Edison, a private utili-
ty. From there he entered'Iinomas Edison State
College in New Jersey to complete a bachelor
of applied science degree in nuclear engineer-
ing technology. In 1967 he started work for De-
troit Edison as a power plant operator trainee
and progressed through the ranks there. He was
director of nuclear training for the utility in
1990 when he left to join an Atlanta consulting
firm specializing in the nuckm field.
In 1993 one of the utilities he was consult-
ing for. the Tennessee Valley Authority, hired
him to manage its Brown's Ferry Nuclear
Plant. Four years lata, in January 1997, he was
one of a team of seven American nuclear ex-
perts hand-picked by new Ontario Hydro nu-
clear chief Carl Anndognini, also an American,
to come north of the border to help rescue
Hydro's faltering nuclear program.
"It was the challenge of turning around a
very large o gacri emit," says Mr. Preston of
what persuaded him to leave his Brown's Ferry
post. "It was also the excitement of going to a
new ta3trology, in fact, a new country."
Before taking over at Pickering, he headed
the team that went in to evahnate each Hydro
plant for the HPA (Independatt httegrated Per-
formance Amt) report that eventually
led Hydro to indefnildy shut dawn seven of its
12 reactors in order to be able to concenuate its
resources on improving their performance.

others he has worked with here are. But he says
he has never had to work under the close pub-
lic scrutiny and heavy community involvement
he has experienced in Pickering, where there
we so many people ready to second guess his

"I feel more like a football or a hockey
coach here than when I was running a station in
the United States It is an added degree of ac-
countability that is beyond what 1 have experi-
enced in the past. It definitely makes it tougher
that you can't focus your decision-making on
just the wch ical issues at hand, that you also
have to focus on how these issues are regarded
by the public.- Mr. Preston has also been some-
what frustrated by how long it takes to imple-
ment change. "Here there's more planning to
make sure you want to do something before
,you actually allow folks to do it. Here people
are more analytical, they really calculate moves
more. I'm pretty impatient and I really want to
move on those things where it's clear to me that

Another difficulty has been having to spall
so much time at his work wNh little left for any-
thing else, though do aspect of the sentiion

isn't complaining. But he does miss the hind of
community work he has done in the past with

Then he should also have more time to de-
vote to his two hobbies, one of which is col-
lecting and restoring old cas.
"I grew up in the automobile capital of the
world," he notes, adding one of his favourite
activities as a kid was climbing fences at car
plants around Detroit to spy at the new models
every year. He also used to be involved in drag
racing, until his wife finally told him to "grow
up" when he hit 30.
His car collectiorn includes a '57 Chevy, a
'74 Mercedes, an 81 DeLoean and an '87 Ca-
maro. "I like the Del.orean because it's the one
that gets the most questions," he says.
Mr. Preston's other hobby is photography,
and his equipment includes an extensive range
of fancy lenses and other photo doodads. But
that should hardly be a surprise with someone
so fascinated by technology and speed
"If is new I want to try ht," hC admits. "If
it's electronic I want to try iL If it's new and fast
I want to try it."
Unfortunately. the Pickering nuclear station
will not be as easy to get into tip-top shape as
one of his cars or cameras. But Mr. Preston is
confident that the day will arrive when his sta-
tion will rut smooddy, efficiently and econom-
ically, with no more of the keds of surprises
everyone his been treated to in recent years.

store to close,
two convert in
Durham

Whitby's Kmart store will close and
two others in Durham will be convert-
ed into Zellers stores as part of the
Hudson's Bay company takeover of
112 Kmart stores across Canada.
The closure of the Whitby Kmart on
Dundas Street will affect the jobs of the
store's 72 employees but not all will
necessarily be laid off, said store man-
ager Jan Kuhlmeyer.
"The Hudson's Bay human re-
sources team will be in here for the
next two weeks interviewing every per-
son and answering questions," he told
the News Advertiser.
"From there they will try to place as
many as possible in nearby (company)
stores.
"They are working very, very hard
to place everybody," he said.
The Whitby store has been at the
Dundas Street location for 37 years,
said Mr. Kuhlmeyer. "We have a lot of
longtime associates. They're upset but,
they know it's a business decision. I
think as the days go on things will set-
tle down."
There has not yet been any informa-
tion relayed as to changes in staffing at
the Oshawa store on Simcoe Street
South, which currently employees
about 100 people, said store manager
Peter Jefferson.
"I can't comment on it," he said. "I
haven't heard a thing."
The manager at the Kingston Road,
Pickering store also said he could not
comment and would not give his name
when contacted Monday.
All tolled, Hudson's Bay will close
40 Kmart stores across Canada and
convert 59 to Zeller's stores.
Fourteen Zellers stores will be
closed and relocated in Kmart locations
(no Durham Zellers outlets were affect-
ed).
Eleven Kmarts and one Zellers will
be converted into a new specialty store
yet to be announced.
Two Kmarts and one Zellers will be-
come Bay outlets.
As a result of the changes, the Bay
will open in one more market and
Zellers will open in 17 more, national-
ly.
The changes are expected to put be-
tween 4 ,000 and 6,000 people out of
work nationally.
Benefit packages for those affected
by the layoff will exceed industry and
regulatory standards according to a
company release.
Outplacement services, career coun-
selling and re -hiring as positions be-
come available have also been pro-
posed.
"Tlhese decisions have been very
difficult because we are affecting peo-
ple's jobs," said Bill Fields, president
and CEO of the Hudson's Bay Compa-
ny in a release.
"However, these changes were nec-
essary to ensure our company's future,
and provide a more secure employment
future and growth potential for the tens
of thousands of Canadians that remain
with the company."
All the affected Kmart stores will be
closed by Aug. 31.

What happened to the Dionne Quintuplets in the
1930s and early 1940s in Northern Ontario was a
tragedy and now is the time to make things right with
Annette, Yvonne and Cecile.
The three sisters, ailing and aging and living on a
combined $746 per month in a rundown house in Mon-
treal, are seeking justice more than 40 years after the
government of Ontario turned over just $800,000 in a
trust fund split five ways.
The trust fund originally had some $1.8 million in it
— a lot of money in 1952 when the sisters turned 18 —
but $1 million went missing. The sisters (Emilie died at
age 20 from choking on her own vomit after an epilep-
tic fit, Marie died at age 36 from a blood clot on the
brain) have tried since 1991 to find out what happened
to the missing $1 million. But no answers have yet been
found and the government seems reluctant to look for
them.
Premier Mike Harris has offered the sisters a tax-free
allowance of $2,000 a month each for the remainder of
their lives. But the trio have rejected the offer through
their representative, lawyer Clayton Ruby.
It's worth noting here the type of life the sisters led
after their birth on May 28, 1934. A sensation of their
time and a godsend to the Province during the depths of
the Depression, the quints were separated from their
family at the age of four months and lived in a com-
pound called 'Quintland' until they were nine -and -a -half
years old. It seems hard to believe now, but at the time,
the notion of seeing the first known surviving quintu-
plets in world history was a fascination few could resist.
Over the nearly 10 years they were on 'public display'
it's estimated the Quints brought in $500 million to the
Ontario economy.
But it's clear none of the girls ever had a normal life
after their first decade — their relationships with their
parents and other siblings were shattered by their early
life. Apart from the deaths at a young age of two of the
quints, the three survivors have suffered health prob-
lems and nervous breakdowns over the many years
since.
Which brings us to the present time: for all they `did'
for Ontario at the beginning of their lives. Ontario owes
them more than a pension at the end of their lives. The
government should investigate whatto the
trust fiord but at the least, Ontario should the sisters
$1 million AND the $2,000 per month pension per sis-
ter. That would ease some of their pain and soothe the
conscksce of a government that, in its time, took but
gave nothing back to the Dionnes

ate use of the sexual facility outside o
marriage is essentially contrary to its pur-
pose, for then sexual pleasure is sought
outside of "the sexual relationship which
is demanded by the moral order and in
which the total mue meaning of mutual self -
giving in the context of truelove is
adhievod." In the image of God, the
human body shirrs in the dignity of the
human person, it cannot be treated as a
"thing" or "chattel" to be used and dis-
posed of at the whim of another, and to
my mind, this is the `lie" in `fife Facts
Sexuality."
Trustee makes
the grade
When the Durham Catholic District
School Board refused last fall to release
results of Grade 3 reading, writing and
mathematics tests administered last
spring, I expected our phones would be
ringing off the hook as angry parents de-
manded to know what the secrecy was all
about.
They didn't.
We did, however, hear from Oshawa
trustee Fred Jones, who was outraged
that even he wasn't privy to the informa-
tion.
It shocked me to learn an elected rep-
resentative who has a say in all sorts of
issues that affect the education of our
children did not know how schools fared
on the test.
Refusing to give up, Mr. Jones re-
quested the information through the Mu-
nicipal Freedom of Information and Pro-
tection of Privacy Act. He finally re-
ceived it last week, and promptly handed
it over to us for publication.

gional junior boys' high school
-hockey crown.
But, the Monarchs were hard-
pressed to keep the Monsignor
Paul Dwyer Catholic High
School Saints from Oshawa from
spoiling their plans in the Lake
Ontario Secondary School Ath-
letics title game played at Whit-
by's Iroquois Park Arena last
Thursday.
In the end, St. Mary survived a
scare from the Saint.s to dust an

In the deciding contest Thurs-
day, St. Mary controlled the ma-
jority of regulation time, bolting
out to a commanding 5-2 lead

The Systems Engineer reporting to the
Operations/Hardware & Communications :Manager is
responsible for providing global systems support for our
Wide Area Network comprising of communications, routers
and servers.
The ideal candidate must possess exceptional skills in
router and communications management, strong Windows
NT Server management skills: solid trouble shooting and
problem solving ability. We require a minimum of post-
secondary diploma in a computer-related field with a
minimum of 2-5 years experience. Good communication
and interactive abilities are key along with a working
knowledge of Windows NT/95, MS Exchange, Internet and
Intranet structures, TCP/IP, Cisco routers, and various types
of communication transports (Frame Relay, ISDN, etc.).
The ideal candidate is willing to travel and must possess a
valid passport.
