AJAX — A bruised Ajax Mayor Steve Parish
says his concerns about health care cuts have in-
creased after an ambulance wouldn't take him to
the hospital here when he was struck by a car and
thrown from his bicycle Wednesday afternoon.
Meanwhile, he is reminding fellow cyclists of
the importance of helmets, which he credits with
"saving me from serious injury".
Mayor Parish was nearing the end of a 40 -
kilometre ride when he was struck by a car mak-
ing a left-hand turn at Dreyer Drive and Harwood
Avenue around 3:10 p.m.
He says he "couldn't miss the car. After I was
struck. I went airborne and came down on my
head. I landed on the front of my helmet, then
rolled onto my face. I have a huge black eye and
scratches.
*1 never was the most handsome man, but now
I'm one of the ugliest:' he jokes.
Emergency crews arrived, but ambulance dri-
vers told him they couldn't take him to nearby
Ajax -Pickering General Hospital because of
overcrowding. Instead, they offered to take him
to a hospital in Oshawa or Scarborough.
Mr. Parish refused because "I was shaken up.
but I didn't think I needed a two-hour wait at Os-
hawa or Scarborough"
A firefighter drove Mr. Parish to the Ajax -
Pickering hospital, where he waited just 20 min-
utes before deciding it was more important to
have his shattered glasses replaced.
"I'm blind as a bat and couldn't see without
them;' explains Mayor Parish, who deeded them
fixed so he could attend a meeting Wednesday
night. He returned to the hospital at about 7:30
p.m. and though he saw a nurse, he left an hour -
and -a -half later after waiting in vain to see a doc-
tor.
..I can't criticize the people down there;' he
says of hospital staff. "They are doing everything
they can with what they've been given.
"I've been concerned about (health care cuts)
for some timc:' Mayor Parish tells the News Ad-
vertiser. "It is something we all have to be con-
cerned about"
While Mayor Parish hasn't visited the emer-
gency department often, "an experience like this
really brings home what's been happening" as
hospitals struggle with overcrowding.
Ajax -Pickering Hospital director of emer-
gency services Tricia Root says the emergency
department has a capacity of 20 working stretch-
crs — 17 of which were being used by patients
waiting for a bed around the time of Mayor
Parish's accident.

Ironically, Mayor Parish and other
Durham Region Councillors had dis-
cussed emergency department over-
crowding at their meeting Wednesday
morning.
The driver of the car which struck
Mr. Parish, a 27 -year-old Ajax woman,
has been charged with failure to afford
reasonable opportunity to avoid a col-
lision, which carries a fine of $105 and
three demerit points.

"At this point we're very, very con-
cerned. We're getting nervous, quite
honestly. The food bank is in serious
danger of closing. Failure to have the
space would be just like having no
food.,,
The food bank currently occupies
3,500 square feet, but Mrs. Trull said a
location two-thirds that size would
likely be enough if storage was care-
fully planned. It's also important for
the site to have parking for the volun-
teers who run it and for users; to be
close to public transit for users without
cars; and to have electricity to power
• the food bank's freezers.
Mrs. Trull invited councillors to
visit the food bank during operating
hours to see for themselves the impor-
tance of its role in the community.
St. Paul's has been helping to feed
needy Ajax and Pickering residents
since it was started in 1991.
Last year 2,031 boxes of food were
distributed to local families and indi-
viduals, and the boxes provided suste-
nance to about 6,222 people, about
half of them children.
Since it has kept statistics in 1992,
St. Paul's has provided food to about
40,500 people (including repeat users).
St. Paul's holds food drives at
Thanksgiving and Easter, and receives
donations throughout the year from

Frenchman's Bay Festival organiz-
ers hold their next meeting Monday,
March 9 at 7 p.m. at the Durham Re-
gion Police station at Kingston and
Brock Roads in Pickering. Anyone in-
terested in volunteering is welcome to
attend.
Partners and sponsors are being
sought for the annual festival to be held
on Saturday and Sunday, June 13 to 14.
This year the festival welcomes the
West Rouge Canoe Club, which is
hosting Dragon Boat races on the west
side of the bay at Bruce Hanscombe
Park. On Saturday, local businesses and
organizations will

other and on Sun-
day elite racing

churches, local grocery stores and in-
dividuals.
Mrs. Trull told councillors food
bank use has "almost directly mir-
rored" changing economic patterns.
The number of users has gone up when
the economy has been down, except in
1996, when she said use went up due
to cutbacks in social assistance.
She noted the food bank needs so
much space because residents have
been so willing to help out their less
fortunate neighbours.
"The people of Pickering have
shown themselves to be incredibly
generous. Whenever the call has gone
out (for donations) the community has
responded."
Mrs. Trull also noted St. Paul's'
storage problems would be solved if it
joined a food bank network like Toron-
to-based Daily Bread, where supplies
are centrally stored.
But she explained St. Paul's is able
to better serve a greater number of
People locally if it remains indepen-
dent, and added donors generally are
more interested in helping their own
community.
Mayor Wayne Arthurs told the vol-
unteer~ he is "confident" a home for
the food bank will be found.
"I know Council is committed to
working with you to seek solutions,"
he said.

Recycling, yes!
More trash, no!
When is a recycling centre not a recycling cen-
tre?
According to the Town of Ajax — and a number
of citizen opponents to a proposed transfer station
— it's not a recycling centre when 66 per cent of
the material received there will be trucked to a
landfill.
We agree.
The controversial plan by J&F Waste Systems
was turned down by Ajax Council's standing com-
mittee of the whole Monday, backed by substantial
support of Ajax and Pickering residents who live
near the proposed site on the border of the two
towns.
Certainly the idea behind the plan is well intend-
ed; it would handle approximately 750 metric
tonnes of recyclable and non -recyclable waste
every day.
But, a conservative estimate of the garbage that
would be delivered each and every day of business
at the site tops out at 37 metric tonnes. That's
enough, noted Pickering Village resident Bill
Davies. to fill the Ajax Council chamber.
And nine-year-old Amanda Breeze offered a
more pointed perspective before councillors on
Monday: "This is my future, not yours. I don't want
to have to fix your mistake. If you want this trans-
fer station, why don't you put it in your own back-
yard?"
Many residents still remember the protracted
battle Pickering had with Metro over closure of the
Brock West landfill site. Ajax and Pickering resi-
dents made it clear before, during and after that
fight they no longer want to be a primary host for
tonnes and tonnes of trash.
J&F could still have some options to explore if it
is to clear this sizable hurdle. Ajax Council must
still vote on the plan this coming Monday, but some
movement on non -recyclable trash limits could
help.
Stringent restrictions on raw garbage and higher
quotas for recyclable materials would make the
proposal more palatable for all. A recycling opera-
tion certainly has a place in the market and in the
community.
But garbage?
The community says no.

I have read and heard in the local
media, with much dismay, the fact that
we face hefty regional tax increases un-
less the Province provides sonic finan-
cial assistance.
When are our local politicians going
to see the light? Whether we pay in-
creases through our local, regional or
provincial taxes, the buck must be paid
by us, the beleaguered taxpayers.
This finger -pointing is a waste of
time and energy. Instead, our municipal
politicians must start seeking out effi-
ciencies within the system to avoid any
tax increase.
A case in point: The Durham District
School Board offered its more -than -ad-
equate meeting chambers to Durham
Regional Council to conduct meetings.
A sharing of savioes; what a novel
idea!
Instead. Duftm Regional council-
lors oiled to spend tens of thousands of
doUars to retroirt their `tired" surround-
ings at the expense of guess who.
Dtirham's public school board is
building a nxich-neWed new school in
Picks ing's northwest quadrant and of-
kmd to work with Pickering Council to
build a combined use weswm branch li-
brary at the site. I understand there was
no interest in the idea and instead the
price tag will he approximately $1.5
million to go it alone.
Partnerships, although foreign to
many politicians, must become the
norm to ensure the best "bang for the
buck".
But this sot of approach takes fore-
sight, maturity and determination to ac-
complish. Do our municipal politicians
have what it takes? Time will tell.

It was a car; ol' bad planning.
Ajax councillors and about 100 Picker-
ing residents spent most of Monday night
and a little of Tuesday morning dealing with
a request by J&F Waste Systems to build a
transfer station on Notion Road in Ajax.
The bad planning wasn't by J&F; it was
on the part of a previous Pickering Council.
Back in the early 1980s, Pickering Ix,liti-
cians decided it was a good idea to allow
houses next to an area that's home to heavti
industry.
There's nothing wrong with the qualit}
of the houses that were built cast of the
Metro East Trade Centre. And, the folks liv-
ing there are a fine bunch.
On Monday. they were doing what re-
sponsible, hard-working people do when
their homes are being threatened. Tux
fought long — very long, in fact — and
loud to protect their investment. They suc-
ccedcd in convincing Ajax Council's com-
mittee of the whole to turn down 1&F's Iwo -
poised waste transfer station.
But, the simple fact is those people and
their hones shouldn't be there. Thr area
should be hone to heavy industry, light in-
dustrial plazas and, even, doughnut shops.
Pickering officials knew when they ap-
proved the houses that Notion Road in Ajax
was zoned for heavy industrial use. A ce-
ment block manufacturer was located on the
lards where J&F wants to build its waste
transfer station.
J&F has a good plan and the location is.
for the most part, a good one. Terrance
White of the Brock East Community Asx}
ciation admitted a transfer station is a good
idea. The only problem with J&F's plan is
the nearby neighbours, he said.
Ajax Councillor Pat Brown warned peo-
ple that a heavy industry could end up on the
J&F site. Ajax officials don't plan to change
the zoning to suit Pickering residents.
Monday's meeting of Ajax Council was
just one round in the fight No matter what

Alleged killers had stolen guns when arrested

Ronhan Nourozali and Ronald
Woodcock, both accused of two
counts of first-degree murder, and a
third man, Dcryck Thompson, were
grabbed March 10, 1995 by a team
of officers following a robbery at
National Grocers in St. Thomas,
near London.

fied Detective Doug Carroxhers of
London Police, were a power
grinder, a Dillon shell casing re -
loader and seven boxes containing
50 rounds each of Winchester
Super Long Rifle high velocity .22 -
calibre ammunition, the same type
of bullets used to kill Mr. Pardy and
Mr. Thomas.
The jury has been told Mr.
Thompson previously worked
under Gagnon Spoors employee
Rarely Jenkins, at a London busi-
ness, and on occasions had fished in
bass derbies run by the murdered
storaowner when he was alive.
Mr. Jenkins previously refuted
suggestions Mr. Thompson was the
masked gunman, a theory proposed
by Peter Zaduk. Mr. Woxxdco ck',

two suspects in a baseball attack
which left an Ajax youth with a head
wound that needed 12 stitches to i

The 16 -year-old youth was at-
tacked across the street from Ajax
High School Feb. 19 by six or seven
youths. During the assault. the victim
was hit over the head with a bat and
then taken to Ajax -Pickering General
Hospital for treatment.
Two Scarborough youths. 15 and
16 years old, are jointly charged with
assault causing bodily harm, assault
with a weapon, possession of danger-
ous weapons and carrying a con-
cealed weapon. The youths are
scheduled to make an appearance at

While Tuesday's federal budget is being billed
as good news for students, the president of the
Durham College Student Association says the Lib-

`The government needs to find some ways to
create jobs for students," says Kevin Jones, who

problem until it escalates into a bigger one. Catch it
early enough and possibly save yourself a fortune"

Having outgrown its former location, the orchestra will now

Road and Ritchie Avenue, north of Hwy. 401 and south of
Hwy. 2.
"Because our first concert was filled to capacity, we needed

As Good As it Gets: Jack Nichol-
son, Helen Hunt. A single mother/wait-
ress (Hunt), an ill-tempered writer
(Nicholson) and a gay artist (Greg Kin-
near) form an unlikely friendship.
The Borrowers: John Goodman.
The Borrowers are four -inch -high "lit-
tle people" who live under the floor-
boards. When the owner of the house
they live in dies and evil realtor Ocious
Potter (Goodman) wants to destroy the
house to build luxury apartments in its
place, they start to fight him with the
help of the son of the house owner.
Dark City: William Hurt, Rufus
Sewell. Waking up alone in a strange
hotel, John Murdoch (Sewell) discov-
ers he has lost his memory and is want-
ed for a series of murders. While trying
to recall his past, he stumbles upon a
fiendish underworld controlled by a
group of beings known as The
Strangers, who are able to stop time
and alter the city and its inhabitants.
Now Murdoch must find a way to stop
them before they take control of his
mind and destroy him.
The Full Monty: Stripping down to
your skivvies is no easy business, un-
less your idea of fun is getting laughed
out of town by everyone you know.
Just ask the boys who've been there —
Gaz, Gerald, Dave, Horse, Guy and
Lomper. They've done it — The Full
Monty.
Good Will Hunting: Matt Damon,
Ben Affleck. Damon stars as misunder-
stood 20 -year-old orphan Will Hunting
who, while working as a janitor at
MIT, outshines the school's most ad-
vanced intellectuals. But, the genius
can't seem to translate his problem -
solving capabilities into his personal
life and becomes caught in the worlds
of his friends — therapist (Robin
Williams), math professor (Stellan
Skarsgard) and the woman he loves
(Minnie Driver).
Kissing a Fool: David Schwimmer,
Jason Lee. Max Abbott (Schwimmer)

he falls in love with one. Although he
has known the lovely, literary Sam
(Mili Avital) for less than 24 hours,

friend Jay (Lee) to test Sam's fidelity
by trying to get her to go out with him.
The two friends put love to the test, but
only one will make the grade.
Palmetto: Woody Harrelson. Harry
Barber (Harrelson) is a good guy who
tries to go bad but can't. Just out of
prison after being locked away for
being honest in his home town, Barber
is bitter and disillusioned and only his
girlfriend Nina (Gina Gershon) can
keep him from leaving Palmetto. Harry
hooks up with Rhea Malroux (Elisa-
beth Shue), the sultry young wife of an
old dying millionaire, who asks him to
take part in a phony kidnapping of her
stepdaughter Odette (Chloe Sevigny).
All Harry has to do is type a note, make
a threatening phone call and collect the
$500,000 ransom and he walks away
with $50,000. But, of course, nothing
is that easy.
Sphere: Dustin Hoffman, Sharon
Stone. When a spaceship is found
1,000 feet below the Pacific Ocean,
carbon -dating reveals it's over 400
years old. When the American army
believes it to be a UFO, a team of sci-
entific experts rushed to the scene to
search the spacecraft comes across a
giant metallic sphere. It determines the
spacecraft has travelled through time
after finding a computer keyboard indi-
cating 'Made in USA, 2048', and also
discovers the spaceship has travelled
through a black hole. When the scien-
tific experts figure out how to enter the
sphere, they do so only to return with
strange powers.
Spice World: Spice Girls. A cele-
bration of the meteoric success of one
of the hottest bands, Spice World is a
bold adventure which mirrors the Spice
Girls' inimitable style — sexy, hip,
stylish and kitschy all rolled into one.
Titanic: Leonardo DiCaprio, Kate
Winslet. Declared unsinkable, the Ti-
tanic and its more than 2,200 passen-
gers begin their journey from England
to New York City with a sense of antic-
ipation, awe and optimism. But, this
ship of dreams ultimately carries over
1,500 people to their death in the ice-
cold waters of the North Atlantic.
Against this dramatic backdrop, the
movie tells the story of third-class pas-
senger Jack Dawson (DiCaprio) and
first-class passenger Rose DeWitt
Bukater (Winslet), who take the ulti-
mate risk — to defy the oppressive so-
cial conventions of their time and fall
in love.

predeceased by Fred, Viola, Manson, Blanche and
Joan. Harvey J. Newhook will be sadly missed by Jim
f!, Denise and his many other family and friends. The
family will receive friends at the MCEACHNIE FU-
NERAL HOME, 28 Old Kingston Road, Ajax (Picker-
ing Village) 905-428-8488 from 7-9 p.m. Thurs-
day. Funeral service in the Chapel on Friday , Febru-
