Durham chairman

PICKERING — Town Council has passed a
tesolutkm designed to start the ball rolling on mu-
hicipal reform to change the way Durham Re-
gion's chairman is appointed.
Council passed the motion at its Monday
meeting. Several councillors noted there have
been complaints from the public about how the
chairs m was recently chosen.
The current chairman, Roger Anderson, was
appointed to the position by Durham Council after

Pickering's resolution states that:
* The appointment of the Region chair-
man occurs shortly after the regular mu-
nicipal elections and therefore has the po-
tential to cause disruption to an area
council if one of its members becomes
the chairman.
* In other jurisdictions, such as the Re-
gional Municipality of Hamilton -Went-
worth, the regional chairmanship is an
elected office, so there are inconsisten-
cies across the Province; in how this office
is constituted.
* The Town of Pickering hcheves the
process must be changed to provide for
an elected person to occupy the Region
chairman's office.
* It is the preference of Pickering Coun-
cil that the Durham Region chairman be:
elected to the office during a regular mu-
nicipal election, or at the very least, that
the chairman should be selected only
from amongst members of Regional
Council and that the timing of the ap-
pointment should be addressed in order
to minimize any impact on the local mu-
nicipality (the chairman is from).
The resolution asks the Association of
Municipalities of Ontario to look at the
issue and make recommendations to the
Province and Pickering on a fair process
for selecting the Region leader.
Ward 2 Regional Councillor Doug
Dickerson opposed the resolution, saying
he didn't like the fact it seemed to be
pushing in the direction of having the Re-
gion chairrrm elected at large, directly
' by residents.
Cour. Dickerson maintained that if
the chairmanship became a directly -
elected position it would cost $125,000 to
w4150,000 to mount a campaign to tun for
the office, so that "only the well-connect-
ed and wealthy" could win the job. He
also maintained it would bring party pol-

Also opposing was Ward 3 Regional
Councillor Rick Johnson. Coun. Johnson
said that while "there definitely is a flaw

regional leader and party politics.

The Crown has suggested
only an avid local fisherman
would be aware of the remote
area where Mr. Thomas's re-
mains were found.

Court challenge
just a part
of the process
One of the first rules of law school, if not of law itself,
is that you should never ask a question you don't know
tfte answer to. That's why many people are worried about
the federal government's Supreme Court challenge to a
Quebec provincial government's unilateral declaration of
independence after a 'Yes' vote in a future referendum.
The presumption here is that the federal politicians,
many of whom are lawyers and all of whom are com-
mitted federalists, would be able to count on getting the
answers they want from the nine Supreme Court judges.
After all, the judges are appointed by the Prime Minister,
head federalist himself. The questions are simple, their
answers probably more complex: Can Quebec declare
independence unilaterally under Canadian law? Does in-
ternational law give a province the right to secede? And
if Canadian and international law clash, which takes
precedence"
fur best guess is the answers to the three questions
are: 'No,' 'No; and, well the answer to number three
doesn't matter if the answer is 'No' to the first two ques-
tions. But, what if the court decides to set a precedent and
declare the answer given in a referendum by the people
of a province holds sway over all other laws? Precedent
in the referendums of 1980 and 1995 would seem to have
suggested that, had a 'Yes' vote won, sovereignty associ-
ation for Quebec would surely have followed. That
bridge has not yet been crossed thankfully, and hopeful-
ly will not be in future.
W'e're into uncharted waters here. The Constitution of
1982 has no answers and realty can't apply since Quebec
is the only province and territory that has never signed
the document. The: failures of Meech Lake and the Char-
lottetown Accord have kept Quebec's signature off the
Constitution. The Supreme Court by tradition and law
must contain three of nine members from Quebec but is
it clear how the Quebec judges will vote on the questions
put before them" What will the rulings mean to the Parti
Quebecois government of Lucien Bouchard, who must
call a provincial election within 18 months and who has
promised to call a referendum on separation shortly after
a successful re-election bid?
The federal government is pulling out all the stops in
its bid to finish off separation. That's good, but beyond
the rale of law from the Supreme Court, it must continue
to work hard to win over the hearts and minds of Que-
beckers. That's more important for our future than win-
ning any court case.

Region no better or worse
with Anderson as chairman
To the editor :
In response to V- E. Emerson's
letter of Feb. 13 about Regional
Chairman Roger Anderson's ap-
pointment being reprehensible,
the writer should take another
couple month~ to calm down and
maybe think before she writes
again.
The main point of her letter. I
believe, is that there should have
been an electioxn for the position of
Chairman of Durham Region.
This I do not disagree with, and
I'm sure everybody in the region
feels the same. But Mr. Anderson
had no control over the process, so
the only reason for Ms. Emerson's
tirade is a personal dislike for the
man.
She fails to realize that Mr. An-
derson's poor showing was not a
reflection of his ability to lead, but
rather the public's respect and ad-
miration for Ajax Mayor Steve
Parish, a man who has a long per-
sonal and family history of service
to the town. Mr. Parish is more
"home grown" than Mr. Ander-
son, and this is what endeared him
to the public on voting day.
Two other points I'd like to
make. First, I don't seem to re-
member too many tax increases in
Ajax during Mr. Anderson's
tenure on local council. Secondly,
where in Ms. Emerson's letter
dues she point out the worst possi-
ble timing of Mr. W itty's resigna-
tion, a move that had not Mr. An-
derson been elected could have
cost taxpayers tens of thousands
of dollars if a byelection were re-
quired to fill the seat vacatcxl by
Mr witty's rcplwcment? Oh, you
didn't mention that? Tsk, tsk, it
must have been an oversight.
The Town of Ajax, and the Re-
gion of Durham, will be no better
or worse with Mr. Anderson as
chairman. Hopefully in three
years the public will be able to
vote for the position. and perhaps
Ms. Emerson will take up the
gauntlet and save us all from uxa-
tion Armageddon.

Justice for whom?
A woman shoots her husband in the head at close
range and beats him with the butt of the rifle. He lives,
but not without permanent disabilities and a life-long re-
minder of the attack — a bullet lodged at the base of his
skull.
For the attacker, 49 -year-old Christine Alexander of
Bowmanville, will spend only months in prison having
received a sentence of two years for attempting to mur-
der her husband.
This sentence is clearly at the offensively low end of
the scale, particularly since, on another occasion, she
pointed a rifle at her husband as he showered and twice
assaulted him with a knife.
The Ministry of the Attorney General will not appeal
the sentence. No wonder David Alexander, her victim, is
disgusted with the justice system. He asks what the wn-
tence might have been had the genders been reversed.
After all, the justice system has no sympathy for the leg-
endary wife beater, what about the male victim, he asks.
What about him indeed?
One has to question the wisdom of a justice system
that acknowledges Mrs. Alexander suffers from a men-
tal disorder but turns around and orders her. as pan of
her sentence, to lead three symposiums on domestic vi-
olence. Mrs. Alexander maintained throughout her trial
she was the victim of spousal abuse while the evidence
painted a clear picture of her as the abuser.
What is the court thinking? We're going to allow a
woman whose answer to domestic violence is to shoo
her spouse in the hexad to lead seminars on domestic vi-
olence.
What's the subject of the seminar going to be? Target
practice?
As if the symposium isn't absurd enough, Mrs.
Alexander has also been 'sentenced' to write six letters
to a community newspaper about her crime. Given the
fact Mrs. Alexander to this day refuses to accept re-
sponsibility for her crime I have to wonder what she
could possibly have to write about that would he worth
printing.
This sentence is a disgrace. The Ministry of Attorney
General's decision not to appeal is preposterous. The
fact that this woman, who clearly considers violence to
be her friend, will be walking the streets, of our commu-
nity in mere months is an outrage.
There must be some comparison made to similar
crimes when sentencing. Last year, 24 -year-old John
Hudson beat his roommate and left him for dead. Three
days later his victim regained consciousness and stag-
gered to a neighbour's apartment for help. The beating
put him in hospital for several weeks and left him with
impaired speech. Mr. Hudson was sentenced to 10 years
in prison.
How is the long-term pain and suffering of David
Alexander any less severe than that of Mr. Hudson's vic-
tim?

A new school-based physical ac-
tivity programme is winning rave
reviews from educators because
"every student can achieve suc-
ccss."
And they can achieve that suc-
cess because "they compete against
themselves, not each other;' ex-
plains Tini Evans, principal of Kc-
dron Public School in Oshawa.
She's talking about Royal
Bank ActivBI a programme de-
veloped by The Foundation for
Healthy Kids in association with
the Ontario Physical and Health
Education Association
(OPHEA).
The programme is based on a
series of eight physical activity
challenges customized to meet
the needs of every student in
each grade level. In the earlier
grades, emphasis is on develop-
ing basic motor skills such as
jumping, throwing and catchin
el
As students get older, greater em-
phasis is placed on fitness attributes
such as cardiovascular endurance,
strength and agility.
The emphasis is on personal
achievement, not pertormance test-
ing. For example, students will be
able to achieve the highest recogni-
tion in jumping by performing an
age-specific jumping action with
the proper technique. They will not
be judged on how high or how far
they can jump.
"We need to keep our kids ac-
tive;' says Ms. Evans, past presi-
dent of OPHEA.
'A good fitness level improves
their quality of life, their acade-
mics, their outlook on life.
"I know I can effect change in
my students by getting them physi-
cally active. It can give them a
chance to blow off steam and im-
proves their self-esteem. That is re-
flected back in the classroom, so
their academic progress is also im-
proved:"

lence of obesity has grown by more
than 50 per cent in Canadian chil-
dren aged six to I I years and 40 per

cent in those aged 12 to 17 years,
the Canadian Medical Association
reports.
Research also indicates 40 per
cent of five- to eight -year-olds are
obese and that regular physical ac-
tivity is one of the best ways to pre-
vent obesity and related health con-
ditions.

a generation at risk of heart disease
and other serious health conditions.
At William Dunbar Public
School in Pickering, teacher Susan
Wright says the programme "gives
teachers more of a focus of what
they're trying to achieve at the end.
Teachers can sometimes get fo-
cused on volleyball and basketball,
but the number of students who will
continue to play those games in
high school isn't high. We need to
involve basic skills that will last
them a lifetime:'
In Ajax, numerous schools have
already bought into the programme,
including St. Catherine of Siena
and St. Bernadette Catholic
schools. Lakeside, Dr. Roberta
Bondar and Cadarackque public
schools and Exeter High School.
In Pickering, Elizabeth B. Phin,
Highbush, Sir John A. Macdon-
ald, Gandatsetiagon and Valley
Farm public schools, St. Isaac
Jogucs Catholic School and Pine
Ridge Secondary School are
using the programme.
In Oshawa, numerous schools
have already bought into the pro -
Jgramme, including Vincent
Massey, Conant, Ridgeway and
Adelaide McLaughlin public
schools, Eastdale Collegiate and
Vocational Institute, Monsignor
John Pereyma Catholic Secondary

Health
Councilrecommends --Under the
cancer centre for Durham

The Central East Regional Group of
District Health Councils has approved a
report supporting the establishment of
community cancer centres in Peel and
Durham regions. But, it could take as
long as four years to have the centres up
and running.
"There's a time lag up to four years,"
says Lynda Hessey, executive director of
the Durham Regional District Health
Council. "And there's a need to move for-
ward right away"
In Durham, plans for the cancer centre
were developed by Oshawa General Hos-
pital which submitted the proposal to the
Ministry of Health in 1996.
Last year, the ministry asked the dis-
trict health councils to review the plans
and consider their impact on existing can-
cer services.
-The information we received from
different discussion groups recommend-
ed that we proceed with the cancer cen-
tres," said Ms. Hessey. "There was a very
strong recommendation that services
should be closer to home"
After meeting with various interest
groups across the Greater Toronto Area
including local health care providers the
district health councils supported the re-
port that recommends each centre, one in
Peel and one in Durham, be built to pro-
vide radiation therapy treatment, sys-
temic care (drug therapy) and to eventu-
ally have six radiation therapy machines
in each centre.
"We are very pleased to hear that the
Central East Regional Group of District
Health Council's report approved the es-
tablishment of a Community Cancer in
Durham at Oshawa General Hospital,"
said Patricia Adolphus, interim president
and CEO of OGH.
"This is particularly good news for us
as UGH is presently in the midst of a
major redevelopment project and it would
be efficient to coordinate the construction
of the Cancer Centre with other facili-
ties "
Ms. Hessey said the community cancer
centres will be linked to the larger cancer
centres across the GTA including
Princess Margaret Hospital and Sunny -
brook Health Sciences Centre.
By working closely with the regional
cancer centres, health care providers
hope to improve and standardize the de-
livery of cancer treatment to the patient
and also share research and information.
The report has been forwarded to Eliz-
abeth Witmer, Ontario minister of health,
urging the government to begin construc-
tion on the cancer centres immediately.
The Health Services Restructuring Com-
mission is expected to comment on can-
cer services in the GTA this spring.
"We are very hopeful that the Health
Services Restructuring Commission's
final report will endorse the District
Health Council's recommendations and
allow us to begin work on this program so
vital for the optimum care;" said Ms.
Adolphus.

showcase their skills at a province -wide
competition after placing first and second
at Durham's TECHNO Challenge '98 last
week.

arate school boards will advance to May's
Ontario Skills Challenge in Kitchener,
which will include an intermediate compe-

Starting March I, don't leave
home without your health card.
That's the date doctors, hospitals,
medical labs and other health care
providers will have to start validating
health cards numbers for each patient
they treat at the time of the visit, says
Lily Weedon, communications offi-
cer for the Ministry of Health.
`"This is just one of the ways to
fight health care fraud," she says.
Clinics, doctors' offices and labs
will ask for patients' cards and verify
them with the Ontario Health Insur-
ance Plan (OHIP) at each visit.
Ms. Weedon says a regular pa-
tient's card won't have to be verified
every time but will have to be if the
doctor or staff feels some informa-
tion, such as an address, has
changed.
(She adds that in emergency situ-
ations, hospitals don't need to re-
quire cards before starting treatment.
If you're in a car accident, you'll get
treated at hospital even if you don't
have your card on you, she says)
Ms. Weedon explains the new sys-
tem has the cards checked out at the
time of visit and before payment by
OHIP.
The current system has doctors
submitting request's " for payment to
OHIP which would then verify the
card numbers, she says.
"We paid the bills and asked the
questions later;' she says, adding this
is referred to as "good -faith pay-
ments"
Cards will be verified in a number
of ways.
Staff can call the OHIP phone line
for computer verification, or offices
and clinics can buy a swipe reader,
like those used for credit or debit
cards, to read and verify health
cards, or send in batches of card
numbers electronically each night
for verification overnight by the
OHIP computer, Ms. Weedon says.
She adds hospitals already use the
last method.
But what happens if you don't
have a card?
"If you are eligible for a card, you
should have one and if you don't
have one, you should get one," she
says.
Generally speaking, people who
live in Ontario less than six months a
.,year are not entitled to a health card,
she says.
Residents who live here more than
six months, regardless of whether
they are Canadian citizens, landed
immigrants or here on minister's per-
mits, are usually eligible, she says.
Eligible people without cards or
who have lost them or had them
stolen or broken need to go to the
:nearest OHIP office and get a new
one, she says. New or replacement
.cards are the new photo cards so
' you'll have to go in person and take
three pieces of identification. she
says. (Red and white cards are still
valid.). . _ .

to fill out a health number release
form.

Methadone is a synthetic
opioid (narcotic) medica-
tion, explains Mr. Khosla,
that can reduce cravings
and eliminate painful with-
drawal symptoms addicts
experience when weaning
off of illegal/street nar-
cotics as well as opiate -
based prescription medica-
tions. When administered
properly and monitored
closely, methadone can
help reduce those extreme
mood swings addicts go
through prompting them to
seek that next injection.
-It's a constant fight be-
tween highs and lows. In
six week, (of methadone
treatments) I could take
them out to dinner and you
would never know they are
an addict," says Mr.
Khosla.
But as Mr. Khosla ex-
plains, methadone is a
closely regulated treatment.
Physicians require a special
licence to prescribe
methadone and must ad-
here to strict guidelines as
set out by the College of
Physicians and Surgeons.
Anyone walking into the
clinic for the first time must
undergo a complete physi-
cal to determine their con-
dition and what drugs
they're currently taking.
-Methadone is not for
everyone," he stresses.
Although First Step had
its official grand opening
this past week. the clinic
actually began accepting
patients in November and
in that short time. over 100
addicts have come looking
for help.
"We didn't expect the
numbers we're getting so
fast:" says Mr. Khosla.
'"the numbers are stagger-
ing. But we haven't com-
pletely tapped the heroine
population. It's a tighter
group. If five come, 30 will
show up. The issue is how
do we get these people into
the clinic''"
The Oshawa clinic is the
second of its kind started
by Mr. Khosla who is, by
trade, a pharmacist. The

There's no question these
clinics are needed, says Mr.
Khosla.
The idea behind the clin-
ics came to him while he
was a student of pharma-
cology, specializing in ad-
diction, he says. He spent
some time in the U.S.
where similar clinics are
abundant but, back then,
there very few in Canada.
He studied a couple in
Toronto, took their best
traits and developed his
own model. And with two
clinics now under way, he's
already looking forward to
opening a third in the west
end of Toronto.

On the last day of his life. Kevin
stepped into a Whitby telephone booth
and placed a call. He was 35, homeless.
itnd for the past six days, had just one
overwhelming hope: that he would soon
he admitted to a hospital.
But last Wednesday, Feb. 11, Kevin ran
out of hope. It was nearly 5 p.m. when he
dialed the newsroom of News Advertiser
sister paper Whitby This Week and was
put through to the newsroom. He was. he
confided. "very depressed and suicidal:'
but his doctors at the Whitby Mental
._Health Centre apparently didn't share his
view; he complained they had repeatedly
refused him admission, telling him he had
an "anger management" problem.
He was calling This Week. Kevin said,
so the community would know, "when
they find me hanging," where to place the
burden of blame for his suicide. Then,
having refused to give his last name or re-
veal his location, he hung up.
Three -and -a -half hours later. a Durham
Regional Police constable found Kevin's
body hanging from a tree.
Thus ended alife that had taken a
downward slide from a pinnacle of com-
fort so many of us take for granted —
Kevin had once held a job he loved, had a
-6'wne, a wife and children. But this order-
ly life unravelled, and no one it seemed,
was able to save Kevin as he sank deeper
and deeper into despair.
,But Brigid Phel,4n tried.
Ms. Phelan is a crisis worker at
McKay House, a bright, spacious home
on Whitby's Byron Street offering sup-
portive housing for the mentally ill. Run
by the non-profit Colborne Community
Services and funded by the ministries of
housing and health, McKay House blends
nicely with its neighbouring homes, its
verandah welcoming visitors like a pair of
**� pen arms. It has room for 13 clients plus
four crisis beds, intended for maximum
three-day visits. Last year, 453 people
slept in those crisis beds, while 510 had
to be turned away.
It was here that Kevin spent the last six
days of his life, and it was here, in the
yard, that he chose to end it, devastating
the home's residents and staff alike.
Ms. Phelan says she pleaded constantly
on Kevin's behalf during those six days,
trying to convince health care profession-
als he was in danger. Kevin was assessed
by at least four doctors during that time,
'dhe says, with his final session taking
ace at the Whitby Mental Health Centre
just hours before he took his own life.
"They kept telling him, 'Tomorrow
we'll probably find you a bed'," she re-
calls. "That hope kept being put in front
of him. It was always tomorrow."
Colborne Community Services' execu-
tive director, Nancy Roxborough, says
she'll ask for a coroner's inquest into
Kevin's suicide.
"This is a death that could have been
%0 evented," argues Ms. Roxborough.
"This felt like a man who needed to be in
- the hospital... we've kept our mouths shut
for 10 years. if we don't do something,

mental condition, not bed availability;
under the Mental Health Act, if someone
is deemed to require hospitalization, there
is an obligation to find him a bed.
Ms. Phelan says her efforts to get
Kevin hospitalized were met with replies
that he wasn't "actively suicidal;' mean-
ing that while he may have expressed sui-
cidal thoughts, he didn't have a plan in
'place to end his life.
But this was a man, say McKay House
staff, who visited a funeral home to in-
quire about death, cut himself twice in
cries for help and talked of emulating a
friend's suicide. Ms. Roxborough says it
was a "blatant" and "extreme" case of
someone being denied help.

While he says he can't discuss the
specifics of Kevin's case, Ron Ballantyne,
administrator at Whitby Mental Health
Centre, says that, "If our physicians had
assessed a person to require hospitaliza-
tion, that would have happened. It is ille-
gal and unprofessional to say you don't
have space, you can't come in:'
There are 325 beds at the Whitby Men-
tal Health Centre, which serves a popula-
tion of 2.5 million people in a catchment
area that covers Victoria County, East
York, Scarborough, a portion of North
York and the regions of Durham and
York. Within that area, one to three per
cent of the people are estimated to have a
serious mental Illness. Currently, says Mr.
Ballantyne, the health centre's six pro-
grams are operating at slightly more than
90 per cent capacity, and beds are "tight "
There are also 39 beds for mental
health patients at Oshawa General Hospi-
tal and 16 at Ajax -Pickering General Hos-
pital, which has received approval to ex-
pand that capacity to 20 beds.
Kevin's claims that he was misdiag
nosed and denied a bed. Mr. Ballantyne
suggests, "Are only one piece of the over-
all picture... people, say something to one
person, and something else to
another... my only caution to you is,
maybe the information being conveyed is
only one piece of a much more complex
Puzzle."
No mental health professional wanis a
patient to commit suicide, continues Mr.
Ballantyne, but most have had experience
with it.
"Almost to a person, they said they did
everything they could. When it comes
down to it, they, as a professional made a
decision. Surely we don't want people
killing themselves, but it does happen"
And it does — 48 people in Durham
Region last year died by their own hand.
Kevin ended his life as a statistic, just one
of dozens of people vAmse stories are all
different, but the ending is always the
same.

The final and darkest chapter of
Kevin's life can be traced back to Thurs-
day, Feb. 5, when he showed up at
McKay House, having been referred there
by a Whitby drop-in centre run by the
Canadian Meatal Heakh Association. He

That first day, according to her, he saw
Doctor No. l at the Whitby Mental Health
Centre, and told Ms. Phelan the doctor
was trying to find him a bed, and would
call if one opened up.
The call didn't come.
On Sunday, Feb. 8, Kevin bought a
knife and scratched the surface of his
right wrist, showed the injury to a crisis
worker and asked for help getting admit-
ted to Whitby Mental Health Centre. He
was seen by Doctor No. 2, and was sent
back to McKay House in the company of
a nurse. who advised McKay House he
I wasn't actively suicidal.
_-Tuesday, Feb. fol, Kevin packed his be-
longings stad meiWation in a bag and set
out for the hospitA`iigain, hoping to be
admitted. He wasn't, but Doctor No. 3 en-
couraged him to return again the next day
to see Doctor No. 4.
That night, Kev n cut himself again.
Ms. Phelan says she called the Whitby
'dental Health Centre and spoke to a
nurse, expressing her "great concern" that
Kevin was talking of suicide and "needed
immediate intervention and assessment."
But the nurse told her, she says. that
Ise% in had "an anger problem, a behav-
i,,ur problem" and had been thoroughly
assessed by Doctor No. 3. Ms. Phelan
.ays the nurse reminded her "the doctor
was a psychiatrist"
Ms. Phelan called Ajax -Pickering hos-
pital, where staff "tried very hard to assist
him." she says. A health care worker
"called back and said he'd called every-
where, he called every hospital he could
think of, including Markham-Stouffville
and there were no beds"
At that point, says Ms. Phelan, an
agreement was reached with Kevin de-
signed to keep him safe one more night.
with the focus on his next appointment at
Whitby Mental Health Centre the follow-
ing day.
"He was getting to the point, how
many more nights can we get him
through?"
It was to be the last.
On the day he died, Kevin left McKay
House for an appointment with Doctor
f No. 4 and a counsellor. But he was back
at McKay House 40 minutes later, telling
Ms. Phelan he'd walked out of the session
after being told again he had an anger
problem.
"He was upset and angry because he
felt they had let him down;" says Ms.
Phelan. "He was unprepared for the twists
and turns ... you could see his energy was
flagging. The anger this man was feeling
was justifiable"
Ms. Phelan convinced Kevin to go see
a general practitioner whom he had met
earlier and liked.
She was hoping the doctor could expe-
dite hospital admission.
"Kevin was agreeing to this plan. He
was still looking for help at this point."
It was a different general practitioner
on duty who called Ms. Phelan back and,
while telling her he felt out of his depth
professionally, agreed admission to Ajax -
Pickering hospital was an option. Ms.
Phelan says she assumed Kevin was with
the doctor at that point, but she never
heard from either of them again.
By 8:30 p.m., Kevin's body had been
found.
Kevin's call to This Week earlier that
evening to describe how the system let
him down both surprised and touched
McKay House staff, who suggest he did-
n't want others to go through the same or-
deal.
"We were just astounded when we
heard that," says Ms. Phelan. "Imagine,
the thoughts that must be going through
your mind when you're that close,
death ... he was a decent, kind man` "who
was obviously thinking of other people,
right up to the end:'

What a difference a few years make.
The last time we were on a cruise, as
you avid News Advertiser readers will
know, was our wedding anniversary
with the family on the M.S.
Westerdam. What an event that turned
out to be.
A few weeks ago we, the Boss and I,
went on another cruise, this time much
less rowdy; no kids (the youngest kid
now being 30!) in tow, just us and
another couple. This time we sampled
Royal Caribbean Cruise Lines (RCCL)
"Monarch of the Seas". To judge the
difference between RCCL and Holland
America lines is almost impossible.
Both lines offer impeccable service,
food that is an event, entertainment of
the highest standard, very glitzy
casinos, and furnishings and fittings
that an interior decorator would die for.
We had changed, though. Last cruise
I added at least 10 pounds to my frame
-- my excuse is that being three inches
over six foot I can take a little girth!
This cruise follows a stringent low-fat
diet that removed 45 pounds from the
old body to bring it back to
respectability; the boss had dropped 90
pounds in the same period. So, here
was the challenge; enjoy the
gastronomic treats without gaining
more than two pounds, which was two
pounds more than the boss's target. I
am happy to report that both targets
were met. I am equally happy to report
that the prime rib was succulent, the
strawberry consommd was incredible
and the desserts just melted in the
mouth. The ship-shape program on
RCCL had us out of bed and on deck
every morning by 8 a.m. and this was a
vacation? Stretching was followed by
four circuits round the deck for a one
mile walk started each day with more
gusto than normal. By the end of the
week the boss was ready to be wired
up to pulsating electrodes under a
seaweed wrap and I forced myself to
undergo a full-body massage after a
hot mud wrap. that's my kind of
exercise!
Can we recommend the Monarch of
the Seas -- a resounding yes! Can we
recommend other cruise lines and other
ships (don't ever let the captain of your
cruise ship catch you calling it a boat) -
- again most definitely. Next adventure:

two weeks on Holland America's
Ryndam for the boss and I; daughter
and son are en route to Alaska
September 12 for seven days on
Holland America's Westerdam. Both of

PICKERING — As Canada's athletes strive to bring home
the gold from Nagano, students and community members at
Pickering's Pine Ridge Secondary School won a gold award of
their own this week.
The school accepted a Director's Gold Award in recognition
of its work with community partners at a celebration Monday.
The annual award was presented to the school and represen-
tatives from businesses involved in community programmes by
Grant Yeo, director of the Durham District School Board, at a
morning ceremony. "Pine Ridge has an active community net-
work:' he said, adding the efforts of staff, students and commu-
nity partners "dernonstr-aw that a new school within a five-year
period can become a true community school ... it's a superb ex-
ample" m
Since the 1993 formation of the Pine Ridge BusinessCouncil, a school advisory body of business and service repre-
sentatives which has since been renamed the Pine Ridge Com-
munity Network, it has taken part in a variety of community ini-
tiatives, including Take a Student to Work Day, Take a Worker
to School Day, Career Days and a Community Challenge last
May that raised over $10,000 for a new youth park in Pickering.
"The key has always been the students at this school:' said
Angie Littlefield, a former Pine Ridge vice-principal who cham-
pioned the school's community network.
Each year, secondary and elementary schools are in the run-
ning to receive an award at one of four levels — gold, silver.
bronze and platinum — with each representing different degrees
of community involvement. Area businesses and organizations
recognized for their involvement with the school included Pick-
ering Hydro, Ontario Hydro, the Town of Pickering, Wellman
Associates, South Pickering Seniors' Club, Pine Ridge Memor-
ial Gardens, Durham Regional Police, the Pine Ridge Parents'
Council, Pickering Central Library, DuPont Canada, Bayfair
Baptist Church, National Trust, Human Resources Develop-
ment Canada, Pickering Town Centre, Coles the Book People
and the Youth Centre of Ajax -Pickering.

Hunt. A single mother/waitress (Hunt), an ill-tem-
pered writer (Nicholson) and a gay artist (Greg Kin-
near) form an unlikely friendship.
Blues Brothers 2000: Dan Ackroyd, John
Goodman. Elwood Blues (Ackroyd), just released
from prison, discovers his old partner Jake is dead,
the band long gone, the orphanage where he grew
up demolished and his surrogate father and orphan-
age custodian dead. After hooking up with 10 -year-
old Buster (J. Evan Bonifant), an orphan in need of
a mentor, and Mighty Mack McTeer (Goodman), a
bartender who knows a bit about the blues, the there

Durham bands ready for
a rock `n' roll. rumble
It's going to be all out war in the coming
weeks — Bandwarz to be exact.
Sponsored by Eclipse Concerts and Jagermeis-
ter, the Fifth Annual Bandwarz Launch Party is
set for Friday, Feb. 20 (tonight) at 7 p.m., at E.P.
Taylor's Pub, with a long list of talent on tap.
Mic Assassins, The Void, Underbrush, Token,
Viewfinder, Deep Shag, Accident Prone and Feral
Child are among the acts set to go opening night,
and are also eight of the more than 55 bands out
to earn first prize in this year's battle for indepen-
dent supremacy.
"We've had some great talent come through
the contest so it's a good chance (for audiences)
to see them at the ground level:' said Kerri
Nowensky of Eclipse, about the eight-week run at
the Durham College pub.
Made up of bands from within and just outside
Durham Region, a panel of music industry judges
will be out each week to catch the talent and help
uncover the top group and award a number of
prizes.
The winning group will receive $1,000 cash,
12 hours of recording studio time valued at $900
from Q107 SkyLab Recording Studio and $500
towards compact disc manufacturing provided by
Music Manufacturing Services. There will also be
runner-up prizes.
Running each Friday until the finals April 17,
the shows are all ages with a licensed area and
Durham College is located at the southwest cor-
ner of Simcoe Street and Conlin Road.

putting out a casting call for its next production.
The Bad Seed has been selected by the theatre group for its
final show of its 20th anniversary season. The drama deals
with the possibility of children inheriting genes and traits from
their parents or even earlier ancestors. s►
Pickering Players will hold auditions for The Bad Seed at
the Pickering Recreation Complex on Tuesday, Feb. 24 and
Thursday, Feb. 26 at 7 p.m. both nights.

Game two, however, was a much different

fay goals en route to a 4-1 victory Wednesday
Light.
Although the Crunch finished 23 points
(head of the Panthers in the league's Eastern Di-
,ision standings, the two teams split the season

With the playoff series deadlocked, it's now
town to a best -of -three affair, with Pickering

"It's going to be worth the bang for the buck"

ering novice 'B' ringette team
earned its fourth consecutive
gold medal at the recent Rich-
mond Hill tournament.
The Pickering squad won
all four of its tournament
games, scoring 22 goals while
the stingy defence and solid
goaltending limited the oppo-
sition to just one goal.
In the final, Pickering dom-
inated London from start to
finish en route to an 8-0 victo-
ry. Marianne Stover was out-
standing in net to earn the
shutout. Cristen Allen regis-
tered her third hat trick of the

Richmond Hill for a 6-0 victo-
ry. Stover was flawless be-
tween the pipes to earn the
shutout. Allen registered a hat
trick. Puddister fired a pair of
goals and Christine Langford
notched a single marker. Han -
nen and Michalicka each had
two assists, Foden and Lynch
had one apiece.
Pickering defeated Etobi-
coke 6-0 in the third game.
Lynch earned the shutout in
net. Allen again struck for a
hat trick, Langford, Foden and
Stover clicked for single goals.
Hannen drew two assists,
Allen and Michalicka had one
apiece.

goals and Christine Langford
notched a single marker. Han -
nen and Michalicka each had
two assists, Foden and Lynch
had one apiece.
Pickering defeated Etobi-
coke 6-0 in the third game.
Lynch earned the shutout in
net. Allen again struck for a
hat trick, Langford, Foden and
Stover clicked for single goals.
