Durham group protests
sex education course
BY SUSAN O'NEILL
STAFF REPORTER
A local citizens' group is planning a protest at
the Durham District School Board headquarters
Monday against a ministry -approved programme
used to teach sexual education to special -needs
students.
The Family Action Council (FAC) claims the
Life Facts Sexuality programme used
to teach approximately 80 senior de-
velopmentally delayed students is
"highly controversial and porno-
graphic '.
FAC co-ordinator Brian Chiasson,
who said Wednesday he had not seen
the teaching kit, claims the pro-
gramme uses sexually explicit materi-
al that's inappropriate for children.
Bev Freedman, superintendent of
notes, parents can decide if they want their chil-
dren to participate in the programme by signing a
consent form.
"I've never had a complaint from a parent
whose child is in the programme;' she says. In
fact, Ms. Freedman has had -many, many com-
plaints" from parents whose children are not in-
ok,ed.
The purpose of the programme is "pre-
ention;' she says. "This is the group that
i, most vulnerable to sexual abuse... these
are children who can't set limits:'
Ms. Freedman reports at least one spe-
cial-nceds child within the board disclos-
es sexual abuse every year.
And she says parents are often grateful
to have help in talking with their children
about sexual education.
However, the FAC states in a recent

Mr. Chiasson, who describes the council
as a Christian group, says the purpose of Mon-

Gagnon trial
Alleged gunmen seen at
`clubhouse' one day later
By STEPHEN SHAW
DURHAM STAFF
The owner of a popular sporting
goods store had virtually no chance of
surviving a gunshot blast he received to
the head during a bloody weapons raid,
a murder trial has heard.
The husband and father of two sons
was minding the family -run store when
two masked gunmen burst into Gagnon
Sports Sept. 14, 1994.
'"I'llis is a holdup, everybody get on
the f floor!" court heard the
shorter of the two robbers screamed be-
fore he opened fire, wounding four men.
At the time, Roger Pardy was stand-
ing behind the counter talking on the
phone with a customer, Crown attorney
Greg O'Driscoll said during his opening
statement. "We're being robbed... Call
the police;' he said Mr. Pardy blurted out
before starting to crouch down.
Mr. O'Driscoll said the robber took
one step towards Mr. Pandy and with
both hands on his gun pulled the trigger
twice. "if anyone else moves, shoot
'em:' the second robber was heard to
say before smashing a glass display case
and scooping several handguns into a
duffel bag, Mr. O'Driscoll said.
Oshawa paramedics Troy Cheseboro
and Ed McDiarmid arrived at the frantic
and bloody scene about 5:31 p.m. and
began tending to the wounded. Mr. Mc-
Diarmid agreed with a suggestion from
the defence that "it was a bloody scene"
in the store and added, "I couldn't deter-
mine whose blood was whose.-
Mr.
hose "Mr. Pardy suffered gunshot wounds
to the shoulder and head, Dr. Tim Feltis,
a pathology expert who conducted the
post mortem, testified Wednesday. He
said one .22 calibre bullet entered Mr.
Pardy's right shoulder and penetrated a
lung, but that wound alone may not have
been fatal had he received immediate
medical treatment.
He said Mr. Pardy died from massive
brain swelling caused by a .22 calibre
bullet which entered his right temple and
-lodged in the brain. The same calibre of
bullets were used in the "execution
killing" of Kenneth Thomas of Picker-
ing, the jury has been told. The 55 -year-
old husband and father is believed to
have been abducted hours before the
Gagnon Sports heist, his car used in the
getaway. Mr. Thomas's skeletal remains
were found four months later. He was
shot four times in the head, court heard.
Roshan Nourozali, 35, and Ronald
James Woodcock, 45, have both pleaded
not guilty to two counts of first degree
murder in the slayings of Mr. Pardy and
Mr. Thomas. The London men also are
on trial for numerous other crimes in-
cluding the attempted murders of store
employees Randy Jenkins and Wesley
Glaspell and customers David Spicer
and George Haralampopolos, all whom
were shot at during the robbery and,
with the exception of Mr. Glaspell, were
wounded.
The Crown has alleged Mr. Wood-
cock and Mr. Nourozali staged the heist
solely to obtain guns and used them in a
string of violent holdups over the next
six months. "Trey were cold, calm and
very aggressive. Anyone who hesitated
to comply with the demands of the short,
stocky gunman was shot:' said Mr. O'-
Driscoll, the prosecutor, of the shorter
robber he alleges was Mr. Woodcock.
He has also said DNA tests of blood
found at the scene will show Mr.
Nourozali was the taller bandit who, the
Crown believes, cut himself on a shard
of glass while breaking the gun display
case.
During other testimony Wednesday,
several witnesses said they saw the get-
away car at various times of the day
parked out front or near Gagnon Sports
before and after the robbery.
Mitchell Hall, a college student, testi-
fied he was walking past the store when
he observed two masked men rush out
the front door and dive into the driver's
side of a full-size, late -1980s General
Motors car.
Mr. Thomas's two-tone Chevy
Caprice was found the next day behind
an apartment on Bloor Street, about a
minute away. Yesterday, an Ontario
Provincial Police surveillance and intel-
ligence squad officer testified he spotted
two men, whom he identified in court as
Mr. Woodcock and Mr. Nourozali, to-
gether leaving an address in London the
morning after the Gagnon Sports heist.
"Am I right that address is a club:'
the officer was asked by Mr. Wood-
cock's defence counsel, Peter Zaduk.
"Yes, you're right. It is a clubhouse:'
answered Detective -Constable James
Pinnegar.
The detective testified he immediate-
ly recognized one of the men as Mr.
Woodcock and ran a police computer
check of the czar the pair got into, which
revealed it was owned by Mr. Nouroza-
li.
The trial continues.

Patients starting
to losepatience
Officials at Ajax -Pickering General Hospital need look
no further than the first -floor emergency department to see
the real effects of health funding limits.
So it was on Monday. when patients filled the emer-
gency department awaiting medical attention. Some of
those patients live right here in Ajax and Pickering. Others
were sent here as a result of so-called 'redirect considera-
tion', under which hospitals send patients arriving by am-
bulance away to other hospitals because they have no beds
available to take them.
Lack of space elsewhere in the GTA has led to patients
arriving at APGH in recent months from as far away as
west Toronto. At the same time, when its beds have been
full, the local hospital has had to send ambulance patients
as far away as North York.
APGH officials here say the cause of the problem is
easy to identify: health care funding. Hospital president
Bruce Cliff has made a compelling case for the hospital's
funding needs in the past. This latest incident, in which
many patients had to wait interminable lengths of time be-
fore receiving medical care, will only add to the file.
"We've run out of flexibility to cope with these pezks;'
explains Geri Geldart, vice-president of patient %erviccs at
APGH. "You would never have had this crisis three years
ago.
Strong words.
And considering that APGH has much more work
ahead with recommendations from the Health Services Re-
structuring Commission, it's clear that the funding issue
must be addressed swiftly, efficiently and completely.
Among other things, remember. APGH has been or-
dered to provide for the creation of additional rehabilita-
tion and long-term care beds and nxwc acute mental health
care beds at Ajax by 2003.
That's a tall twder, particularly when there was no ac-
companying recommendation from the restructuring com-
mission to provide capital grants to the Ajax hospital.
This week, however, the focus has been on the emer-
gency department and the spike in patient arrivals. What's
been most telling about that, however, is that patients
haven't been taking it directly out on hospital officials. In-
stead, there seemed to be a consensus (among those in the
emergency department on Monday) that the provincial
government is the culprit here.
We're aware — and in most cases agree — the Ontario
government is intent on balancing its books after years of
fiscal mismanagement by other panties.
But prompt and accessible emergency medical care for
all Ontarians is far more important than what's at the bot-
tom of the financial ledger.
Ajax and Pickering residents deserve an appropriate
level of funding to provide an appropriate level of care_
So far they've been patient. Lately, though, all they've
been doing is waiting, and waiting, and waiting...

Chairman's appointment reprehensible
To the editor:
Open letter to all members of
Durham Regional Council:
I am still extremely angry about
and disgusted with the recent elec-
tion of Roger Anderson as regional
chairman. It has taken me this long
to be able to write this letter with-
out danger of setting fire to the
paper.
I am sure that there was not one
regional councillor who was not
aware of Mr. Anderson's miserable
showing in the Ajax municipal
election of November 1997. Not
only did he lose by 4,539 votes to
9,464. but he failed to win one
poll, not even his own.
In my opinion every regional
councillor who voted for this failed
politician has insulted all of the
more than 40,000 Ajax residents
who did not vote for him. I believe
that as a municipality we are owed
a public apology.
I heard Whitby Councillor
Gerry Emm on local TV on the
subject of his vote change. What a
farce! As if Jim Witty, who had
been a regional councillor for some
years and chairman for a short
time, did not have more right to the
deciding vote than Mr. Emm. And
as for Mr. Anderson, he was a re-
gional councillor for a very short
time, and no longer had any right
to that consideration.
1 am on record with former
provincial governments as being
ardently in favour of a regional
chairman elected at large, such as
the case in Metro Toronto. I
haven't given up on achieving this
as it would be a much more demo-
cratic process.
I was in the council chamber
when Mr. Anderson was elected. It
was all I could do to avoid making
a public protest! I did not expect to
he so insulted by the members of
my very own regional council. As
to the voting of the members of"
that group ... what an irresponsible,
deplorable, reprehensible develop-
ment!

A tempest in
sex ed. class
The public school board is coming under
fire from a right-wing community organization
claiming special -needs students arc being ex-
posed to graphic materials used to teach sex ed-
ucation.
However, the Family Action Council is ring-
ing alarm bells when it's not really wan -anted.
The Durham District School Board is sim-
ply Providing a programme that parents chose
to allow their children to participate in.
The council, which is planning a demon-
stration outside the education centre Monday
night to protest the use of the Life Facts Sexu-
ality document, refers to tlx: material as "high-
ly controversial and pornographic"_
A recent news release from the council
states. "The Family Action Council is not op-
posed to sex education as it applies to anatomy,
puberty, biology and reproduction. However,
we strongly oppose to the use of sexually ex-
plicit material and curriculum that introduces
children to horrnscxuality"
Bev Freedman, superintendent of pro-
grammes for the board, readily admits the ma-
terial is graphic but %he note,-% it is only taught to
an "infinitesimal" number of students, roughly
80 out of a student population of approximate-
ly 66,0(X) ac--rc>,s% the region.
The material is also only used to educate de-
velopmentally delayed students in a secondary
ndary
school setting and is not taught to "normal"
Classes.
The parent-; of students who participate in
the programme arc also fully aware of the con-
tents of the material, reports Ms. Freedman.
She notes they arc invited to attend a workshop
to review the material and are required to sign
permission forms to allow their children to at-
tend the class.
Ms. Freedman also reports she has had no
objections from parent-% who have children in
the class and says the material in no way pro-
motes homosexuality.
Why then, if the parents of those in the
classroom don't have an objection to the mate-
rial, is the Family Action Council taking it upon
itself to try to regulate sex education in the re-
gion'?
If the Family Action Council wants to teach
family values, then members should teach their
children. And, let others worry about their own
kids.

BY AL RIVETT
STAFF REPORTER
AJAX — Leaving behind a
long teaching career, family
and his roots in his native
Trinidad two years ago. Ra-
bindranath Maharaj emigrated
to Canada and settled in Ajax
in the hope of furthering his
literary aspirations.
His self-imposed exile from
the slow pace of his island
homeland hasn't been easy;
it's been fraught with inter-
mittent uncertainty and self-
doubt.
But, it's a move he doesn't
regret.
And, with the critical suc-
ccss of his first novel Homer
in Flight. Maharaj is now cer-
tain his decision to come to
Canada was the correct one.
"There were three places I
had in mind — America. Eng-
land and Canada — and I'm
thankful that I chose Canada;'
says the soft-spoken Maharaj,
who now goes by the angli-
cized name Robin. "in a
decade or so. Canada will
have produced some of the
best writers in the world.
Michael Ondaatjc comes to
mind. Coming to Canada for
this particular reason is a de-
cision 1 don't regret.
"When I left Trinidad, 1 left
behind security and money
and everything.
..It was a kind of selfish-
ness that made me come to
Canada. I want to ensure that
I'm successful to make sure
all the sacrifices have been
worth it."
Maharaj taught literature in
his native Trinidad for 12
years before getting his first
introduction to Canada in
1993 when he moved to the
Maritimes to pursue a Master
of Arts degree in creative
writing at the University of
New Brunswick.
Upon graduation, he re-
turned to Trinidad to work as
a journalist, eventually be-
coming a columnist with the
Trinidad Sunday Guardian.
Two years later, the urge to
return to Canada to pursue his
first love, fiction writing, was
too strong to ignore.
The income from his writ-
ing is supplemented by his job
as a supply teacher with the
Durham District School
Board.
"Writing is the most unsta-
ble and erratic of professions,"
he laments.
"I've been spending more
time writing than teaching,
4-
but at this point. it's impracti-
cal to give up teaching.
"It', today, I could afford to
write full-time. I would. I ex-
pect it will happen, but 1 have
no idea when, though."
His first book. The Inter-
loper (1995, Goose Lane Edi-
tions), a collection of short
stories culled from his final
thesis for his Masters degree,
was short-listed for the 1996
Commonwealth Writers' Prize
in the best first book division.
That was followed by his sec-
ond book of short stories, The
Writer and His Wife, pub-
lished in 1996 by Pcepal Tree
Press.
His first novel, Homer In
Flight, published by Goose
Lane Editions in the spring of
1997, has garnered critical ac-
claim for Maharaj in the year
since it landed on book store
shelves.
The novel follows the trials
and tribulations of Homer
Santokie, a new immigrant to
Canada from Trinidad whose
desire to restore order and
sanity in his life by fleeing to
a new land never quite materi-
alizes.
Homer In Flight received
favourable reviews from a
number of newspapers and lit-
erary publications across
Canada and abroad.
Most recently, Homer In
Flight was reviewed in the
Trinidad Express where the
critic dubbed the novel "the
best hook of the year".
The critical acclaim afford-
ed the novel has been an un-
expected phenomenon for Ma-
haraj.
As Homer In Flight's cen-
tral character was a "neurotic
person who brought on a lot
of his problems" and a far cry
from the idealistic immigrant
most books of this genre por-
tray, the book could have easi-
ly been misunderstood by re-
viewers, notes Maharaj.
"It was simply different
from any other book written
about immigrants. I didn't
show (Homer) as an idealist;
he is someone who is unsym-
pathetic. I knew it would be
viewed in one or the other ex-
treme. It would be misunder-
stood and therefore ignored or
they would understand it.
Thankfully the latter took
place."
Most importantly, the suc-
cess of the book in literary
circles has opened some new
avenues for Maharaj.
"Because of the publicity

Ajax resident Robin Maharaj is still enjoying a wave of suc-
cess and critical acclaim resulting from his 1997 novel Homer
in Flight. He's currently nearing completion of his as -yet -un-
titled second novel.

cd, my options are far more
flexible."
His New York -based liter-
ary agent, Maria Massie, is
promoting his next novel to
the larger Toronto publishers
who have "expressed some in-
terest".
Homer In Fli'fit has been
used by students in the Uni-
versity of New Brunswick's
post -colonial literature course.
As well, the novel will be the
topic of a serialization by
CBC radio.
His new, and as -yet -unti-
tled novel, will be finished by
April and is expected to be
published in about six months.
The new book, says Maharaj,
differs greatly from Homer In
Flight on many levels.
The main character is more
stable and well -adjusted than
Homer. And, the book has the
main character returning to his
homeland.
"It has to do with renewal
and, in some respects, redis-
covery," hints Maharaj.

Pickering curlers gunning for gold
BY AL RIVETT
SPORTS EDITOR
It can't get much better for two Picker-
ing men and their Canadian curling rink
at the Olympic Winter Games.
In first -place overall in the eight -na-
tion standings, with a perfect 6-0 record
and a semi-final playoff berth locked up,
the hot -shooting Mike Harris rink, with
Pickering residents Richard Hart, 29, at
third and Collin Mitchell, 28, at second.
has accomplished every goal it has set so
far.
The Harris rink, based out of the Tam
Heather Curling Club in Scarborough,
will be undefeated in round-robin play if
it wins its final game against the Norwe-
gians Friday.
The gold medal awaits.
"Everything is going great," Hart told
the News Advertiser in an interview
Thursday morning from the Olympic
satellite village in Karuizawa. where the
curling is taking place 60 kilometres
southeast of Nagano. "We're playing real-
ly well. We've controlled every game al-
most from the beginning"
The Canadian curling juggernaut con-
tinued to roll in action on Thursday, de-
feating Switzerland's Patrick Huerlimann
who, going into the contest, held an
tical 4-0 record as the Harris rink.
Canadians turned a close 6-3 conte,t
a rout in the
ninth end when
they scored two

ry. In the late
game of the day.
the Harris rink
continued its per-
fect string with a
6-3 win over the
defending world
champion Peter
Lindholm rink
from Sweden.
But. Hart
says, that's not RICHARD
good enough. Al- HART
though they have
a playoff spot
sewn up, the Canadians are still playing
for first -place overall which would give
the squad last rock in the finals Sunday.
"We're going to play hard for that. We
feel (last rock) is important to us."
Hart reports he's somewhat surprised
the Canadians have had such an easy time
in round-robin play.

Individually, the
Canadian men
have been domi-
nant at their re-
spectrve posi-
tions. Currently,
Hart, Mitchell, skip Harris and lead
George Karrys have consistently made
more shots than their opponents, with
each shooting well over 80 per cent so far
in the Olympics. Harris and Hart were
ranked number -one at their respective po-
sitions entering game six against Sweden
Thursday.

Hart downplays the
-
team's high shooting efficiency.
"What really matters to us are the
points on the board. In every game so far,
each of us has made five or six key shots
which, when you make them, you put
them right on the (score) board"
Hart says the Harris rink is loose and
having fun at the Olympics.
"We've always been that way;" says
Hart. "We weren't sure how we were
going to handle the pressure and the
media predicting gold medals for us. We
weren't sure how we were going to react,
but we just stuck to our game plan and
we've had a lot of fun. I'm pleased with
how we've been able to handle all the dis-
tractions:' AP
Commenting on the Olympic experi-
ence, Hart says he's been overwhelmed
by the support Canadian athletes have
given each other at the Games.
"We've met the rest of the Canadian
Olympians and everybody is cheering for
everybody else here. The Canadian team
has been working together. It's a neat
feeling to know (dance pairs figure
