PICKERING — Town Council has decided to try to turn
up the heat on Queen's Park to order an environmental as-
sessment of the Pickering nuclear station.
At their meeting Monday, councillors endorsed two mo-
tions which they hope will gain the Town
allies to help it put pressure on the
Province. One provides for letters to be

Greater Toronto Arca asking them to for-
mally endorse Pickering 's request to
Queen's Park for an environmental re-
view. The second asks the Atomic Energy
Control Board (AECB) to recommend to

The region's two school boards are ex-
pecting to break even after paying out a
combined total of roughly $10.5 million to
area families for expenses incurred during
the 10 -day teachers' strike last fall.
Today marks the deadline for parents to
submit family claim forms for the inconve-
nience caused by the teachers' protest.
And while Grant Andrews, director of
Dally anticipated a shortfall, he in-
dicated that may not he the case.
..We may break even. We have
processed over 6,000 (claim forms)
to date and have had roughly 8,300
submitted," he said.
That means the board will pay
out approximately $3.3 million in
rebates. That figure, together with
expenses like paying school bus
companies during the strike, means GRANT
the board will likely break even ANDREWS

les, adding the government has recently
changed all kinds of legislation to initiate
municipal reform and could easily pass
whatever legislation may be necessary to

legislature's Select Committee on Hydro
Nuclear Affairs recently identified the fed-
eral regulator as the one carrying "the big
stick" when it comes to nuclear issues.
"I think it's only prudent of the AECB to
use that stick to beat the Province of Ontario
over the head if necessary;' if that's what it
takes to get the assessment done, said Coun.

PICKERING — Town councillors
have stepped back from taking a stand
on how Durham Region's chairman
should be chosen.
On Monday, Council voted to defer
for two weeks a motion brought forward
by Ward I local Councillor Dave Ryan
to ask the Province to introduce legisla-
tion that would provide for the election
of the regional chief. Coun. Ryan said he
plans to amend the motion to have the
Town ask the Association of Municipal-
ities of Ontario (AMO) to consider the
issue of how regional chairmen should
be chosen.
Durham's current chairman, Roger
Anderson, was appointed to the position
by Regional Council after he lost a bid
for the Ajax mayor's job in last Novem-
her's municipal election.
Coun. Ryan said he brought the issue
forward because the public is unhappy
about the way Mr. Anderson was cher
sen. He maintained it's "incorrect" that
citizens have no say in who their Re-
gional chairman is. However, he agreed
to the deferral after other councillors
said they. weren't 100 per cent sure about
how chairmen should be chosen.
Mr. Anderson, who happened to be at
the meeting to update Council on Re-
gional affairs, said fit opposed the
choosing of a Durham head through an
election.
"If you elect the Regional chairman
you bring in party politics to the local
Ievel " he explauned. "I don't think party
politics belongs at the local level."
Mr. Andcrscm also estimated mount-
ing an election campaign for the region-
al chairmanship would cost over
$1 (X)',(ot).
-I don't know anyone, certainly nor
me, who can afford to nun a campaign
region -wide."

Go Canada go!
Grab the gold
It's finally here' Canada's favourite Olympics, the
winter kind, kick off Friday night in Japan with the
opening ceremonies from Nagano.
And Durham Region will be ably represented in
two of the most high-profile, cherished Canadian
winter sports: men's hockey and curling.
National Hockey League veterans Joe
Nieuwendyk, Keith Primeau and Adam Foote, all of
whom grew up and played their minor hockey in
Whitby, will be part of what some commentators are
calling Canada's greatest -ever team. No,.,ing less
than a gold -medal finish will be acceptable for this
squad which will be under the microscope night and
day for the next two weeks. If all goes as expected,
Canada should be facing off for the gold medal at
11:45 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 21. It may well be the
most watched event in Canadian history.
Curlers Collin Mitchell and Richard Hart — the
Pickering pair —will be the second and third cogs in
the Mike Harris foursome which will battle for su-
premacy in Japan. With a heavy interest in curling in
this country, the Harris rink's fortunes are sure to be
closely watched by millions over the next week.
Durham's five -athlete contingent will be gunning
for gold, of course, but there are a number of other
high-profile athletes with golden dreams: the
women's hockey team, men's figure skater Elvis Sto-
jko, ice dancers Shae-Lynn Bourne and Victor Kratz.
Sandra Schmirler's curling rink, biathlon ace Myriam
Bedard, speedskaters Susan Auch, Catriona Le May
Doan, Frederic Blackburn, bobsled kingpin Pierre
Luedders, any one of a number of freestyle skiers. All
have excellent chances at gold medals. Nothing's
ever certain, but it appears Canada is a sure bet to top
its best -ever haul of 13 medals from a Winter
Olympics. Most experts are predicting five to eight
gold medals and 15 to 18 medals overall, a signifi-
cant improvement over any past Winter Games.
The inclusion of NHL players has made this a
truly special Olympics for Canada and extra special
for Durham Region: it means we have three members
of the elite Canadian team to cheer for. With most
games starting just before midnight or at about 5 a.m.
it's a good bet many of us will arrive at work sleepy-
eyed — the quality of the hockey and the excitement
of cheering on Canada will be worth it for the next
two weeks. Go Canada go and bring home the gold!

Don't set off panic buttons
without proper information
To the editor:
Re carbon monoxide detectors:
In the Jan. 27 News Advertiser,
Pickering Councillor Maurice Bren-
ner says he would like to we a
mandatory bylaw passed for all resi-
dents to have carbon monoxide de-
tectors installed and all insurance
companies notified of this bylaw.
That's all fine and dandy for
councillor Brenner to say. Some
would even applaud him for such a
thought but did Mr. Brenner do his
homework before he went to the
media?
Yes Mr. Brenner, it is true that
about 300 people per year are killed
by carbon monoxide poisoning, but
did you know that approximately 90
per cent of them are suicides and are
from carbon monoxide fumes from
motor vehicles?
You also quoted a price of around
$39 for a detector. Yes that is correct
if you want one that has not been
proven totally reliable. For a com-
pletely accurate carbon monoxide
reading you will have to pay around
$500. Half the people in Pickering
can barely pay their taxes or even af-
ford a substantial hike in their hoose
insurance.
Also, every time your cheap de-
tector goes off, if you call the gas
company and they send out a ser-
viceman, you can also expect the fire
department and the ambulance to
show up at your door, if at the time
of the call you have flu-like symp-
toms.
So Mr. Brenner, before you set
off the panic buttons of Pickering
residents, please check with the fire
department and gas company to see
just how efficient these cheep de-
vices are before you make it manda-
tory and change the bylaws.

Who's right on welfare?
Can a government get people off the pub-
lic purse and into paying jobs?
Community and Social Services Minister
Janet Ecker thinks so, but former Durham
West NDP MPP Jim Wiseman says govern-
ments arc trying to keep needy people down.
This week. Ms. Ecker announced more
changes to the welfare system, including one
that would force homeless people to get an
address before they could receive a welfare
cheque.
Ms. Ecker says 250,000 people have
stopped collecting welfare since the Tories
have been in power.
"Inose who criticize us, one of my re-
sponses is to take a look at our track record;'
she said in an article in the News Advertiser
on Wednesday.
But, Mr. Wiseman feels the federal and
provincial governments are siding with busi-
ness to create a large pool of unemployed
workers, thus driving down wages. High in-
terest rates, free trade and the non -accelerat-
ing inflation rate of unemployment arc the
culprits.
He points to the social assistance rates in
Ontario. The number of people getting wel-
fare and Family Benefits Allowance took a
big jump when free trade was introduced and
increased even more when the recession
began.
Before free trade, the number of social as-
sistance beneficiaries in Ontario was around
the 500.000 mark. After free trade started, the
number started going up and kept rising until
1995. That's when the Tories were elected.
The worst downturn since the Great De-
pression kicked the stuffing out of the econo-
my and forced thousands to seek public help.
When the Harrisites carne to power, they
promised workfare. Now, they point to it as
one of the reforms that's getting people off
assistance and into paying jobs.
"We're basically restoring the integrity
and credibility of the system," Ms. Ecker
says.
Mr. Wiseman counters that workfare is
"designed to lower people's wages"

April that documented a custodian laid off
from his job in 1992, only to return to it as a
welfare `trainee' — at lower pay, with no
benefits and no vacation.
Who's right? We'll see who the pubic
thinks is right in 1999 or 2000, when the next
Provincial election is held.

Pickering, Ajax volunteers to the rescue

PICKERING — Pickering Nuclear
Generating Station employees came to the
rescue of residents in eastern Ontario broad-
sided by an ice storm that cut their electrici-
ty for weeks.
Roger Cotd and Bill Todd were among
six station control technicians from Picker-
ing and 10 from Darlington who assisted the
ice storm victims. The volunteers spent eight
days in the rural areas hit by the ice and
power failures, mostly installing generators
and servicing electrical equipment for farm-
ers.
"They were pretty happy to see us," says
Mr. Cote. '"Chey were pretty tired"
He explains the farmers were working
long hours moving their own small genera-
tors around to their own homes and barns
and their neighbours'. They had to do it to
keep essential equipment going and their
livestock from freezing, starving or getting
sick on farms that depend to a large extent
on electrical equipment to veep animals W.
warm, milked and ventilated. The bigger
generators provided by Agriculture Canada
and installed by people like Mr. Cote and
Mr. Todd were life-savers for the animals
and business -savers for the fanners.
"Every time you hooked up a generator it
was instant gratification;" recalls Mr. Cotd.
"I'd do it all over again."
Mr. Todd particularly recalls repairing a
generator at a dairy farm that one woman
was trying to keep going all by herself in the
midst of the power failure. Dead livestock
was lying in the snow on the property, and it
had been impossible to move milk from the
storage tank where it was collected to a milk
truck without electricity.
Mr. Todd notes he and the other volun-
teers had to scrounge for materials the whole
time and work hard to get equipment run-
ning for farmers after it had been knocked
out by the power failures. But it was worth
all the trouble and he says he's glad he vol-
unteered to go.
"It certainly gave me an appreciation for
electricity."
Pickering station security department
employees Tom Gallant and Grant Lawson
both gave up their own vacation time to help
out. Mr. Gallant, a member of the Royal
Canadian Air Force Reserve with the 400
Tactical Helicopter Squadron, spent I 1 days
stationed at the Kingston airport with his
unit. The squadron was there to fly genera-
tors, food, medical supplies and other need-
ed items to areas hit by the blackout. As a
cook for the unit, Mr. Gallant spent long
hours working to feed its 55 members as
well as some hydro workers.
Mr. Gallant served six months with the
reserve in the former Yugoslavia in 1993 and
spends many of his weekends and other free
time training with the reserves at CFB
Petawawa.
"I'd been training for this for the last few
years. It was good to see it was all worth it:'
Mr. Lawson had to turn down a chance to
go to eastern Ontario with his Oshawa -based
Ontario Regiment Canadian Army Reserve
Unit, because as a part-timer at Hydro he
didn't have enough vacation days for the 10 -
day commitment required. But he finally did
get to go for three days along with some
other volunteers from the Fire and Emer-
gency Services program at Durham College
where he is enrolled. They were called in to
provide relief to firefighters in Rideau
Township north of Brockville who were in
desperate need of sleep. He wasn't called to
any fires but the volunteers were kept busy
doing patrols and helping get the station
back in order for the regular firefighters.
"I jumped at the opportunity;" says Mr.
Lawson. A like to go where the action is.

skills needed in the storm location, Picker-
ing station materials management superin-
tendent Irene Manuel and warehouse fore-
man Ron Johnson kept themselves busy here
raising $6,000 for ice storm relief and
putting together a two -tonne truckful of
items such as propane heaters, flashlights,
batteries, footwear and stove kerosene for
blackout victims.
"Irene came to me and said 'we've got to
do something here' and I said 'let's go for
it';' says Mr. Johnson.
"We felt we wanted to contribute;' says
Ms. Manuel.
They solicited donations of flashlights
and other equipment by handing out pam-
phlets explaining what was needed to station
employees as they left through the plant
gates after work.
They collected the cash by standing with
pails at the gates and placing a few pails at
various locations in the station.
"They can say what they want about On-
tario Hydro employees;' notes Mr. Johnson,
"but when it comes to a crisis like this they
just open their hearts up"

AJAX — The Town honoured
four Kcal "heroes" for their ef-
forts in helping the Ottawa area
recover from last month's ice
storm.
Certificates of appreciation
were presented to Steve Russell,
Dave Garner and John Farley at
the Ajax Council meeting Mon-
day night. Fred Heber was ab-
sent.
"They truly are heroes," said
Durham Region Chairman and
former Ajax Councillor Roger
Anderson. "They represented the
town very well.
"I can't say enough about how-
they
owthey represented Ajax and
Durham Region in Ottawa. Not
only did these three gentlemen
do Ajax proud, they ... did Durham
Region proud."
Mayor Steve Parish echoed his
comments. "They served us well
and the residents of eastern On -

area, "The response of our opera-
tions (department) people was
overwhelming," reported Mayor-
Parish.

these four got that honour."
The men also gave certificates
of appreciation to each councillor
and to operations department di-
rector Frank Hull for sending
them to Ottawa.
Mr. Garner told the News Ad-
vertiser the situation in Ottawa
was "devastating. The news did-
n't do it justice."
Mr. Russell noted, "95 per
cent of the trees were damaged.
One hundred thousand trees are
gone.
"We tried to save what we
could, but, eventually, they will
have to come down"
The Ajax workers travelled to
eastern Ontario in a convoy with
crews from Oshawa, Clarington
and Durham Region.
They left on Jan. 10 and re-
turned Jan. 24 after working from
7:30 a,m. to 7:30 p.m. for 14
straight days, mostly in down-
town Ottawa.
The Ajax contingent cleared
felled trees in areas where Ot-
tawa officials took them. They
then chopped up the trees and
dumped them on dead end streets
where Ottawa workers will clear
the piles at a later date.
Damage was so great in some
areas that it took Ajax workers a
day -and -a -half to complete work
on Just one street.
Mr. Garner reported, "There
was very little damage to house,.
Everything seemed to fall per-
fecth,. If there were two houses, a
limb would fall between the two
houses."
But, most of the maple sugar
industry was destroyed, Mr. Rus-
sell said. "It will be 40 years be-
fore it's back. It will be two to
five years to repair the (hydro)
lines."
He added the army was shoot-
ing ice off hydro towers with rub-
ber bullets.
All three had great praise for
the residents of Ottawa. Some of-
fered to do their laundry and one
woman baked muffins for them.
"We'd walk in a restaurant and
people stood and applauded," re-
called Mr. Garner. "What kept us
going was adrenaline and appre-
ciation."
Mr. Farley said he and his col-
leagues "definitely would have
stayed longer" if Ottawa officials
hadn't managed to line up con-
tractors from the United States to
complete the clean-up.
"The need is there, for sure,"
Mr. Russell added.

awareness of key lifestyle factors
which are known to reduce the risk of
cardiovascular disease"
The programme was developed in
partnership with the Ontario Heart and
Stroke Foundation and will be deliv-
ered with the support of the Ontario
Division of the Cancer Society, the On-
tario Lung Association and the Ontario
Public Health Association, says Mr.
Ouellette.

Durham school board requests
Province cover writeoffs

The Durham District School
Board is appealing to the Province to
review a shortfall in ffanding caused
by "unusually high" tax writeoffs,
says a board official.
Ron Trbovich, superintendent of
business, told trustees Monday the
board has not received any funding
for an $800,000 shortfall in revenue
caused by a combination of ratepay-
ers' successful tax appeals in munic-
ipalities across Durham and the loss
of taxes due to businesses leaving
the region.
In a report on the short -year bud-
get, which the board will discuss at a
special meeting Monday, Mr. Tr-
bovich states, "The Province has
provided additional grants to the
school boards to offset unusually
high tax writeoffs over and above the
amounts forecast in 1997,
due to a large number of
appeals being settled be-
fore the end of 1997."
However, while the
provincial government
promised Ontario school
boards compensation
when it released details of
the short -year funding in
mid-January, the Durham
District School Board was
not granted any of that
money.
A ministry document
released Jan. 15 states, "If
the tax writeoffs exceed
what the board reported in its 1997
estimates or the average in its previ-
ous five years, whichever is greater,
then the board will be provided a
grant equal to the excess."
Mr. Trbovich, who says the
current amount of tax write-
offs is at a 10 -year high, is
awaiting a response from
the Ministry of Education
and Training.
Meanwhile, David Visser,
manager of finance for the
Durham Catholic District
School Board, says the
amount the board received
from municipalities last
year is approximately
$120,000 less than the
$268.000 forecasted by
board staff.
"It hasn't been overly bad:" says
Mr. Visser.

PICKERING —
Durham Region Chairman
Roger Andersen got a polite
reception as he visited Picker-
ing Monday night to deliver a
'state of the Region' address
to Town Council.
But there were signs there
may be storm clouds on the
horizon for relations between
the Town and Region, whose
ratepayers might face an 1 I -
per cent tax hike.
The biggest disagreement
may come: over theissue of
the approximately $4.K -mil-
lion grant in lieu of taxes
Pickering now receives from
Ontario Hydro for the Picker-
ing nuclear station. Mr. An-
derson maintained the Region
should get a share of that
money.

made sense for Durham to re-
ceive some of the grant to
help it deal with the increased
financial burden brxxwght by
provincial downloading -

however, stated Pickering
will fight sharing the grant if
it means the Region is going
to "dig deeper into Pickering
taxpayers' pocket: ' to bemfit
Durham as a whole.

what share of the tax burden
i_s going to corse from each of
the municipalities." He ex-
plained he will agree to shar-
ing the grant revenue only if it
means Pickering taxpayers
will not take a hit to benefit
the rest of Durham. The
Town, he said, would expect
some kind of trade-off to ben-
efit its taxpayers.

$1.5 million in funding
A community partnership involving 16 public and private
organizations has been approved for a $1.5 million grant under
the Ontario government's Telecommunications Access Partner-
ships (TAP) programme.
Durham Centre, MPP and Labour Minister Jim Flaherty an-
nounced the approval, which is still subject to negotiation of a
project agreement, for Durham Community Network.
The approval is for the development of an integrated com-
puter network to provide access to advanced information high-
way applications and services for all of Durham Region.
--hese types of projects are essential to the economic de-
velopment of the entire region, particularly the small commu-
nities and Waal areas of Durham:' Mr. Flaherty said.
Durham Community Network is a partnership led by
Durham District School Board and including Durham Catholic
District School Board, Scugog Township, Brock Township, the
libraries of Pickering, Scugog, Brock and Uxbridge, Durham
Region Police Services, Durham College, Durham Region
Economic Development Advisory Committee, Durham Re-
gion Federation of Agriculture, AT&T Canada, Compton Com-
munications Ltd., Intesys Network Communications Ltd., IBM
and Lotus Corporation.
TAP is a $20 -million funding initiative that provides funds
for innovative partnership Projects.

also noted an audit of the po-
lice budget ordered by the
Province could prove costly if
it shows the Region needs 30
to 40 more officers, as hac
been suggested by some,
since that would cost an addi-
tional $1.5 million.

PICKERING — The first annual
Babe Expo will be held at Pickering's
Metro East Trade Centre Saturday and
Sundav, Feb. 28 and March 1.
It's an event designed for expectant

cased on the floor, visitors will be able to

Muscling in on fitness
Durham teachers work on minds and bodies
leads a class of fitness discovery for
group of Durham Region teachers. The
program offered teachers an opportuni-
ty to learn more of the benefits of a good
fitness programme.

One -hundred -and -fifty teachers came to-
gether last week in Durham to exercise both
their bodies and their minds.
The participants, mostly physical educa-
tion instructors, sweated through three gru-
,Min- 75 -minute workouts during this
scar's Reebok Versa Training programme.
I'hose who took part didn't just leave with a
"•ood workout, but also took with them a
better understanding of fitness.
The programme is the brainchild of
Grace Andrews. who among other things is
a physical education teacher at Central Col-
legiate in Oshawa and a certified fitness in-
structor. Ms. Andrews, with the partnership
of Reebok Canada. is helping to redefine the
focus of physical and health education.
"It's on the cutting edge:' Ms. Andrews
says, adding aerobics and cross training is
just in its infant stage in schools. "We're set-
ting the pace for fitness training in high
schools"
This is the third year an event of this
magnitude has been held. The last two years
the programme was offered to students,
with over 400 taking part last year. This
time around, Ms. Andrews decided to offer
the programme to teachers from school
boards in the Greater Toronto Area.
-We couldn't accommodate everyone
this year. We just didn't have the space:' she
says. adding future events could be held at
multiple sites.
Fit classes can include such exercises as
high- and low -impact aerobics, aqua fitness
and resistance training.
"You don't have to be a great athlete to
take part:' says Ms. Andrews, adding that

sports were left in the cold in the past.

Team coaches are also starting to realize
the cardio vascular benefits of cross -train-
ing and aerobics, although many male stu-
dents might balk at the notion of fitness

down:" says Mike Wilson, head of Paul
Dwyer Catholic High School's physical ed-
ucation department, who participated in the
event.
"I've done step and aerobics before, but
to actually lead a class you need the confi-
dencc this programme provides"
Pickering High School already incorpo-
rates a fit class for the girls, says Donna
Corrigan, head of girls' phys-cd at Pickering
High School. All four staff in her depart-
ment took part in the Reebok Versa Training

Gertrude Catholic Elementary
School this lune will benefit
students, says a separate school
board official.
Walter Yewchyn, superinten-
dent of support services for the
Durham Catholic District
School Board, says the board
believes the closure is a good
move that will provide students
an improved school environ-
ment.
Mr. Yewchyn reports the ma-
jority of the school's current
students will be transferred to
Billboard
the nearby Holy Cross Catholic
School where they will have "a
lot more students to interact
with right off the bat"
The students will also bene-
fit from gaining access to an in-
creased number of programmes
and resources that the board
wasn't able to offer because of
the small pupil population at St.
Gertrude.
"We just didn't have enough
teachers there," he says.
And, students at Holy Cross
will also benefit "from a lot
more technological exposure"
thanks to a decision to move all
the computers at St. Gertrude to

says the number of pupils at St.
Gertrude has been declining for
several years.
There are only 82 students
currently enrolled at St.
Gertrude so the school is oper-
ating at approximately 35 per
cent of its capacity.
Mr. Yewchyn reports area
parents were first notified of

day, Feb. 7 from 10 am. to 12:30 p.m. at the

The board passed a motion
to close St. Gertrude last spring.
He says there are no other
schools in the region that have a
declining student population or
are in danger of closing. In fact,
the number of students within
the board is increasing at ap-
proximately 1,500 a year.
The board last closed a
school in Pickering approxi-
mately 12 years ago, Mr. Yew-
chyn says.

"Our school has been providing fit class-
es for about a year and a half," she says.
"We started just with our regular Grade 10
class, talking to the kids and evaluating
what their interests were."
The Durham Health Department lent a
hand providing information on issues of
teen smoking and the effects of second-
hand smoke. Nis. Andrews also provided
participants with up-to-date fitness informa-
tion. Also a trainer/instructor with the On-
tario Fitness Council, Ms. Andrews has a
fitness studio at Central Collegiate where
she helps others achieve their goals of be-
coming a certified fitness instructor. Stu-
dents from other high schools such as Henry
Street in Whitby, Cartwright in Blackstock
and Donevan in Whitby have taken part in
the OAC level course.
Durham Catholic
trustees stay
in lobby'group
The Durham Catholic District
School Board has renewed trustees'
membership in an association that
lobbies the provincial government on
their behalf.
Renewed membership in the On-
tario Catholic School Trustees' Asso-
ciation (OCSTA) will cost $40,000
for the short -year period of January
through August.
Board chairman Jim McCafferty
says the fee is .based on the number of
students at schools in the region.

The Blues Brothers are back, without Jake

Anastasia: A mix of action, adventure,
romance and music, Anastasia is an animat-
ed full-length film about the lost Russian
princess, the fabled last surviving member
of the Romanov family.
As Good As it Gets: Jack Nicholson,
Helen Hunt. A single mother/waitress
(Hunt), an ill-tempered writer (Nicholson)
and a gay artist (Greg Kinnear) form an un-
likely friendship.
Blues Brothers 2000: Dan Ackroyd,
John Goodman. Eighteen years after the
1980 hit The Blues Brothers. Ackroyd re-
turns as Elwood Blues. The maverick musi-
cian, just released from prison, discovers his
partner Jake is dead, the band long gone, the
orphanage where he grew up demolished
and his surrogate father and orphanage cus-
todian dead. After hooking up with 10-ycar-
old Buster (J. Evan Bonifant), an orphan in
serious need of a mentor, and Mighty Mack
McTeer (Goodman), a bartender who knows
a hit about the blues himself, the three begin
a quest to reunite the band.

Great Expectations: Ethan Hawke,
Robert De Niro. Based on Charles Dickens'
classic 19th -century novel, Great Expecta-

lows the story of young Finn Bell (Ethan

dramatically changed by three strangers,

The Replacement Killers: Chow Yun-
Fat, Mira Sorvino. John Lee (Chow Yun-Fat)
is a man whose violent past as a profession-
al killer brings him only remorse, but makes
him the ideal assassin. In exchange for his
family's safety. Lee is forced to take a job

against police detective Stan Zedkov
