Hydro, workers look at rescue
plan for mothballed reactors
BY MARIANNE TAKACS
STAFF RHPOWER
PICKERING — Discussions are under way
among the Power Workers Union (PWU), Ontario
Hydro and a private British firm which could result
in the cancellation or revision of plans to shut down
seven Hydro nuclear reactors, including four already
off line at Pickering.
Hydro ordered the shutdowns, for an
indefinite period, in August to make way
for improvements at its nuclear stations in
response to a scathing assessment report
which found them to be functioning at a
"minimally acceptable" level.
The talks were initiated by the PWU after
British Fogy (BE) which opmics nuckar
stations in the United Kingdom, made a pre-
sentation before the provincial iegishitu e's
Mr. Murphy. who notes BE has a track record of suc-
cessfully turning around faltering nuclear stations.
"Iiuough exactly how the partnership would
work has not yet been established, he says, "there
would be two nuclear companies where today we
have one'" Provincial legislation governing the nu-
clear and electricity sectors would have to be amend-
ed to allow the partnership.
Mr. Murphy maintains the arrangement
would be a better alternative for Ontario
ratepayers than having to pay the $2.5 bil-
lion Hydro has calculated it will cost to im-
port replacement energy from the U.S., and
having the jobs associated with it go to the
U.S. instead of Canada.
Even though Hydro has said it ordered the
shutdowns mainly because it does not have
sufficient resources to improve operations

Mr Murphy says his union and BE have been
talking since the fall and are working on a "credible
business case" to establish a "public-private partner-
ship" under which BE would take over operation of at
least some of the seven reactors being taken off-line.
"What they would have to bring is they have expen-

partnership discussions will take a few months.

Durham teens call on regional
government to clear the air

Durham politicians got a lecture last

youngsters from taking

"I used to work in a bingo hall. I was
working at three different bingo halls and I
was getting 15 hours of smoke.
I tried to work in the non-smoking sec-

Munira fears she may lose a loved one
to second-hand smoke. Her mother comes
from a "chain-smoking family, although

agnosed as being in the early stages of
heart disease.

The two students were speaking as part
of a public awareness campaign to high-

:Munira believes health officials should do
more to discourage smoking by youngsters

Ice warms
up unity
Nothing like a natural disaster to make you appre-
ciate your neighbours.
What's true in everyday life is proving oh -so -true
with the great Ice Storm of '98. Ice doesn't discrimi-
nate between rich and poor, between farmer and city
dweller, between Ontarian and Quebecker.
The outpouring of sympathy and help from south-
ern Ontario for our storm -tossed friends in the east
has been heart-warming. There have been an incredi-
ble number of fund-raisers over the two weeks de-
signed to help out eastern Ontario and southern Que-
bec to cope with the turmoil. Like the help provided
for the flood -ravaged Saguenay and Red River areas
in 1996 and 1997. Canadians are proving yet again it
doesn't matter what part of this country you come
from: you're one of us and when you need our help,
we'll be there.
It's not our style to try to score political points off
a human tragedy but try to imagine Quebec coping
without any help whatsoever from outside the
province itself. Yet, that's the scenario that would
exist if Quebec had decided to separate in 1995 or
way back in 1980. Do Quebeckers really believe,
deep down in their hearts, they're better off on their
own? How can they honestly feel this way when they
see the all-out effort devoted by Canadians from
across the country to help them when they need it the
most.
We've always been convinced Canada must stay
together. Unlike separatists from Quebec, we feel this
great country is far more than the sum of its parts. It's
been said before but it must be said again and again:
Canada is the envy of the rest of the world. It seems
that only in Canada do we not appreciate the quality
of life we have and that's a pity. But we don't need to
say this: for the past four years the United Nations —
on a broad scale which encompasses many different
variables — has rated Canada the number -one coun-
try in the world. Not Japan, France or the United
States. Canada.
There are still more than 200,000 Quebeckers
without electricity and about 20,000 eastern Ontari-
ans. 'Tiley will need plenty of help to get back on their
feet in the days, weeks and months ahead. Being
Canadians, we will do everything we can to offer our
help and it won't matter who the recipients of that
help are.

Up to now I had always

found out, when I read the Dec. 3
News Advertiser story headlined
'Councillors object to choice for
new Ajax deputy mayor'. It
seems, in Ajax, we can beat Pick-

hands down.
If a procedural bylaw allows
the mayor to appoint the deputy
mayor, so be it. The opinion ex-
pressed that "our neighbours al-
ways have regional councillors
serve as acting mayor" is irrele-
vant. It is their prerogative. As
long as the procedural bylaw is on
the books in Ajax — and it should
stay there — the mayor of the day
cannot be faulted when making
the appointment. Come to think
of it I never heard much about a
ago.
I consider it rather presumptu-
ous for rookie Ward 1 and 2 Re-

to say, " 1 only look at this as a
slap in the face to myself and
Councillor McMaster", and "As
the longest serving councillor (on

Overlooked, indeed! At the

Help a special boy
It was a chaotic day when I called on the
family of Mikey Ferraz. I had re -arranged the
time I was to meet them so I would be able to
bear the latest news from the provincial govern-
ment on yet another round of education reform.
As I knocked on the front door of their mod-
est Pickering home, I glanced at my watch for
the umpteenth time that day, mentally schedul-
ing how much time I would need to talk to local
school officials and write my stories in time for
the next edition.
Barking dogs greeted me, along with Mikey's
mom Gillian Hadley, who introduced me to her
four-year-old son Mikey, a smiling red-haired
boy born with hydrocephalus, a condition I
knew as 'water on the brain'.
Soon, time didn't matter, as I was drawn into
the story of Mikey. He had undergone 22 opera-
tions by the tender age of two, had been in a
coma on his first birthday and had suffered
meningitis, leaving him blind and deaf. His folks
told me about his many seizures, several of
which leave them frightened.
As the mother of two healthy children. I
couldn't help but wonder how I would cope if
the tables were turned. Mrs. Hadley karned dur-
ing her pregnancy that she would give birth to a
baby with medical problems, but doctors didn't
know just how extensive those problems would
be.
She admits "it's not your average life," but
despite the around-the-clock care Mikey needs,
Mrs. Hadley can't imagine sending him to a spe-
cial school that would see him home only on
weekends. And she does get help from a caring
nurse named Gabrielle Ottaway, funded by
Durham Family Respite.
With the consent of Mr. and Mrs. Hadley,
Ms. Ottaway phoned the News Advertiser about
a fund-raiser she is helping organize for Mikey.
They're hoping to collect enough money to pur-
chase things like a car seat that costs about $700.
It seems a particularly appropriate item, since
riding in the car is one of Mikey's favourite pas-
times. And as Mikey continues to grow, his fam-
ily will need a lift to get him in the car and in and
out of the bathtub — items that aren't compkte-
ly covered by govanment funding.
The fund-raiser will be held Friday, Jan. 23
at The Ranch Bar dt Grill in Ajax. Tickets are
just $20 and can be putdtased by cMmg the
restaurant at 619-2138.
But if you can't attend, you can still Mend a
helping hand by donating to Canada Trust ac-
count 503813. Quoie branch number 747.
It would help a very special little boy.

Doin' it for Mikey. ..
Ajax fund-raiser aids `special' Pickering lad
By LINDA WHITE
STAFF REPORTER
PICKERING — Like many four year
olds, 'Mikey' Ferraz loves to be cuddled,
has favourite toys, enjoys car rides and
has an adorable laugh.
But that's where the similarities end.
Michael was born with hydrocephalus,
a condition characterized by enlargement
of the cranium, caused by abnormal accu-
mulation of cerebral spinal fluid. It's
commonly referred to as 'water on the
brain'.
The red-haired Pickering boy has un-
dergone 22 operations to have shunts im-
planted that allow the fluid to flow prop-
erly. They must be replaced as he grows.
He has suffered numerous infections as a
result of the shunts and was left blind and
deaf after a bout with meningitis. He has
been in and out of the hospital all his life,
once in a coma. He also suffers from
seizure disorders, sometimes experienc-
ing several a day.
Despite the hardships, Mikey brings
much happiness to family and friends.
"When I come home after a hard day at
work and see Michael lying in bed laugh-
ing, all the bad things go away;' says his
stepfather Ralph Hadley. "Nothing else
matters. He's quite a kid. He can tolerate
a lot of pain."
His five-year-old sister Faith "loves
him to death," reports Michael's mother
Gillian Hadley, who believes the strong
bond between them was evident on
Michael's first birthday.
"When Faith kissed him to wish him a
happy birthday, he opened his eyes for the
first time. He had been in a coma 10

days ... She's very protective of him and
doesn't like it when kids make fun of
him."
Mrs. Hadley learned during her preg-
nancy with Michael that he had a platelet
incompatibility — meaning his hlood did-
n't clot — and that he was bleeding in his
brain. Doctors told her he would likely
have a limp and could be developmental-
ly delayed.
She delivered Michael at seven months
and he remained at the Hospital for Sick

..Pickering boating course
offered for'women, by women
PICKERING - The Frenchman's Bay
Power Squadron is taking registration for a
boating course for women which runs Jan. 20 to
April 28 on Tuesday evenings.
It's similar to the organization's regular boat-
ing course but will be taught by women and pre-
sented from a woman's point of view.
The Power Squadron, part of the Canadian
Power and Sail Squadrons, is a non-profit orga-
nization formed 40 years ago by a group of
boating enthusiasts to increase knowledge of
seamanship, navigation and boating, emphasiz-
ing safety on the water.
It currently has 250 members locally. Admin-
istrators and teachers work on a volunteer basis
without remuneration.
For more information on registration call
Kathy Pearce at 416-286-4645.
Children in Toronto until he was about
five months old. They didn't learn until
several months later, however, how com-
plex his medical problems were.
Mrs. Hadley sometimes wonders how '
she'd cope if she didn't have the assis-
tance of a nurse, provided through
Durham Family Respite. Gabrielle Ott-
away spends 34 hours a week helping
care for Michael, who is fed through a
tube.
"I'm also here so mom can have a life
with her other child and her husband,"
,ays Ms. Ottaway, who is helping orga-
nize a fund-raiser for the purchase of such
things as a special car seat which carries
,t price tag of $700. She also hopes the
!amily will be able to buy a lift to help get
Michael into the family vehicle and a
hoist to help get him in and out of the
bathtub.
"This is his quality of life," Ms. Ott-
away says, pointing to Michael, strapped
into a wheelchair. "You can't take it away
from him. You have to help make life the
best it can be."
Indeed, a flyer announcing the fund-
raiser notes, "Special people need special
care. Special care has special costs.
Mikey is very special."
The fund-raiser will be held Friday,
Jan. 23 beginning at 8 p.m. at The Ranch
Bar & Grill, 89 Commercial Ave., Ajax.
Tickets are S20 and are available by call-
ing Lisa at 619-2366, Heather at 416-282-

SPECIAL TO THE NEWS ADVERTISER
Ajax resident Bob Turcotte fell just
short in his bid for a third successive On-
tario senior men's curling title at the cham-
pionships in Ingersoll this past weekend.
The Turcotte rink, which curls out of
the North Halton Golf and Curling Club in
Georgetown, went undefeated with seven
consecutive wins in the round-robin por-
tion of the T.E. Financial Consultants Ltd.
Seniors Provincial Championship which
ended Sunday.
Turcotte lost 5-4 to the Jim Sharples
rink of the Royal Canadian Curling Club in
the provincial final. Sharples will represent

in 1989.
Meanwhile, Canadian Olympic men's
curling representatives and Pickering resi-
dents Richard Hart and Collin Mitchell
will be the toast of their club on Monday,
Jan. 26. The Tam Heather Curling Club
will hold a reception and fund-raiser for
the Mike Harris foursome starting at 7 p.m.
Goldline will be on hand selling Olympic
clothing to assist the Ontario team. Visitors
are welcome to drop in and add their good
wishes to the Nagano, Japan -bound team.
Mitchell and Hart will also be the guests
of the Metro Junior 'A' Hockey League
Pickering Panthers at their league contest
against the Port Hope Buzzards at the
Pickering Recreation Complex Friday, Jan.
23.
Mitchell and Hart will be on hand start-
ing at 7 p.m. to sign autographs before the
game, which begins at 7:30. They will also
drop the ceremonial puck prior to the con-
test.

Marvin Harrison at second and Mike Nel-

The pair of Annandale teams won the
Silver Tankard zone event last December
for the fourth year in a row. They now ad-
vance to the regional playdown at the High
Park Curiing Club on Jan. 31. If they man-
age to win there, they will advance to the
Ontario finals in Brampton Feb. 1. The re-
gionals were their stumbling block last
year, but they did win it and earned a berth
in the provincial finals each of the previous
two years.

All-Scarborough final in hoops tourney
SPOM REPORTER
PICKERING — It was an all -Scarbor-
ough championship final and an all -York Re-
gion consolation title match at the second an-
nual News Advcrtiser/Pine Ridge Pumas
Basketball Classic at the Pickering school
Saturday.
The three-day tournament, which ended
Saturday afternoon, featured eight teams in-
cluding two from Scarborough (Winston
Churchill Collegiate Institute Bulldogs and
the Albert Campbell Celts); two from York
Region (the Thornlea Thunder of Thornhill
and the Bayview Bengals of Richmond Hill);
and four from Durham (Father Leo Austin
Wildcats and the Sinclair Celtics from Whit-
by, G.L. Roberts Laken from Oshawa and
the host Pine Ridge Pumas).
The Winston Churchill Bulldogs met
Scarborough Secondary Schools Athletics
Association rival Albert Campbell Celts in
the championship final, while York rivals
Thomlea Thunder met the Bayview Bengals
in the consolation game.
The Bulldogs, who won the News Adver-
tiser/Pumas junior tournament last year, re-
turned to win the senior crown by a close 59-
57 margin over the Albert Campbell Celts.
Meanwhile, the Bayview Bengals, who
trailed through much of the consolation final,
exploited Thornley turnovers in the final
stages to pull out a 51-48 victory.
The heavily -favored Bulldogs, a late addi-
tion to the tournament, steamrolled through
the competition in the early rounds to ad-
vance to the final where they met a worthy
foe in the Campbell Celts, who they'll face in
SSSAA league play in February. The Bull-
dogs led by as much as 10 points in the third
quarter and held a seven -point advantage in

Father Leo J. Austin Wildcats' Rob
Dasilva, right, watches as the basket-
ball eludes an Albert Campbell Celts'
player during championship semi -
the final two minutes. Burt, the Celts made it
interesting in the late stages, using a full -court
press and sane opportune shooting to pull
within two points in the final seconds before
time ran out.
Winston Churchill coach Emanuel Mara
gave full credit to the undadog Celts whose
gritty performance will send a message to his
Bulldogs when the two teams meet in their
upcoming league match -up. He says the
Celts' full -court press in the final two minutes
set his charges buck on their noels, but they
were able to withstand the heat for the win.
"I'm always worried when we get up 10 or
12 points. We have to work on not turning the
ball over," says Maas. "Campbell is a tough
team. At the beginning of the season, we were
pegged to win the Scarborough league, so it's
added incentive for teams to cane and play
hard against us."
The Bulklogs got a banner game from for-
ward and team leader Atiba Nelson, who post-
ed an outstanding all -rotund contest including
a game -high 24 points. Nelson was also
named to the tournament's all-star team, along
with teammate Richie Phillips.

final action at the News
Advertiser/Pine Ridge Pumas Classic
at Pine Ridge Saturday. Campbell
won this game 52-43.
"He came over from A.Y. Jackson school
(in Scarborough). The intensity he brings to
the court has really helped us. He's such a
tremendous leader," says Moura
Shawn Kerr netted 10 points for Churchill
in the final.
Campbell was led by Kwasi Danso with 23
points, followed by Kojo Danso with 14 and
Monte Francois with 10. Kwasi Danso and
Francois were also named to the tournantaK
all-star squad.
The Bulldogs earned their berth in the final
after whipping G.L. Roberts 77-38 in the first
Pine Ridge Pumas by a
79-26 count. Mean, then while, Canipben defeated
',:ridair 68-44, then downed Father Lcu

In the exciting consolation final game, the
Bengals played basketball like a

k for late against the Thornlea Thunder.
lia, , iew trailed for most of the contest.
1, )tin 29-24 at half-time and 37-32 at the end
4f the third quarter. The Bengals took their
first lead 48-46 with 2:26 remaining in the
fourth quarter and continued to prey on
'Mornlea turnovers to put the game away.
Bayview coach AI Falkenberg applauded
his team's patient play against Thornlea and
iLs ability to capitalize on Thurnica's fourth-
quarter mistakes.
"We're a patient team. We're young, but
%e know that we can play from behind. It's
not something we worry about." says Falken-
hcrt?.
He added that the familiarity between the
two teams also helped the Bengals. "We
know each other very well and the guys knew
what to expect."
Roee Gold continued his hot hand in the
consolation final for Bayview, scoring 16
points to lead the way. Gold was also named
to the tournament's all-star team. Edcon Yau
netted 10 points for Thornlea.
As for the host Pine Ridge Pumas, the tour-
nament provided a learning experience for
the young team which has two Grade ll
starters on the roster. After a good opening
game in which Pine Ridge pulled out a 51-50
victory over Bayview, the Pine Ridge seniors
swam with the sharks from Churchill in the
second game and were given a clinic in bas-
ketball by the squad which currently ranks
just out of the top 10 list of Toronto teams.
"We're a young team, but it was good for
them to play against good competition, just as
long as they don't get discouraged," says Pine
Ridge coach and tournament convener Jim
Barclay. "This year is not their year, but hope-
fully they'll improve in the next couple of

AJAX — Glenn's Auto Service prevailed
in a defensive contest over Dakota Bob's in
Ajax Ladies Recreational Basketball League
action Wednesday.
Neither Glenn's nor Bob's were allowed
many clear shots in the contest, but Glenn's
posted a 26-18 win. Julie Hughes netted eight
points for Glenn's Auto. Lori Lomberg replied
with six for Dakota Bob's.
The second game of the evening, Bank of
Montreal and East Side Mario's displayed
tremendous outside shooting. In the end,
Mario's held on for a 45-41 victory. Rhonda
White scored 18 points for East Side Mario's,
followed by Lori Fleming with 14. Kristan
Scarlett led the bankers with 13.
