AJAX — A Pickering woman
happened to be in the right place at
the right time to help a suicidal man
who felt "nobody cares" about him.
Debbie Davison was on her way
to Ajax -Pickering General Hospital
to pick up her son Wednesday after-
noon when she spotted a man strad-
dling a railing overlooking the train
tracks running next to Hwy. 401 at
Harwood Avenue.
"It scared the daylights out of
me;" Mrs. Davison says.
She was heading southbound on
Harwood when she spotted the man
on the west side of the street. Mrs.
Davison pulled into a gas station at
the corner of Harwood and Station
Street and called Durham Regional
Police, who had already received
other reports about a man threatening
to jump.

That's what the Town should
be asking Queen's Park to do on
its promise that provincial down-
loading will not cost Pickering
taxpayers any extra money, ac-
cording to Ward 2 local Council-
lor Mark Holland.
Coun. Holland plans to bring a
motion before Council Monday
to have the Town solicitor draft a
"contract" between the Province
and Pickering stipulating that the
restructuring being imposed by
the Tory government will be rev-
enue -neutral for Pickering or re-
sult in increased revenue for the
Town. He wants Ontario Premier
Mike Harris or his designate to
sign the document, or, in the
event the Province and Town
can't agree on the restructuring
numbers, to authorize the ap-
pointment of an independent au-
ditor, agreed to by both sides, to
determine the impact of restruc-
turing on Pickering.
Coun. Holland is basing his
motion mostly on a recent state -
merit made on local television by
Steve Gilchrist, parliamentary as-
sistant to Minister of
Municipal Affairs Al
Leach, that there is "no
way that Pickering
comes out anything but
on the plus side of the
ledger" in the down-
loading process. The
proposed resolution
also notes Finance Min-
ister Ernie Eves has
stated in a letter to
heads of council that re-
structuring would be
"revenue -neutral across
the province", which
the councillor says has
not been the case.
Coun. Holland says the motion
is not a frivolous one. Though he
"would love" to see the
contract signed, he ex-
plains, even if the
Province refuses to do
so that would focus pub-
lic attention on the
downloading issue and
clarify the fact it is not
revenue -neutral as
promised. He maintains
public understanding of
the issue is essential to
obtaining residents' sup-
port for the Town's fight
to get a fair deal from
the Province on down-
loading.

"He cried and I gave him a big
hug. He kept saying 'nobody cares'.
I told him he was wrong:'
Mrs. Davison says another passer-
by talked to the distraught man. "He
tried to talk when I went by. He gave
up and walked away"
Although police who arrived on
the scene with ambulance attendants
congratulated her for a "good job",
Mrs. Davison doesn't consider her-
self a hero.
"I didn't really do anything except
talk to him. Others talked to him.
They just didn't happen to have a re-
porter there.
"I wondered how someone could
be that down they were planning to
take their own life, if that's what he
was doing.
"There are so many people to talk
to. I felt lucky I don't feel that way,"
Mrs. Davison adds.
The unidentified man was taken to
Ajax -Pickering General Hospital.

On the road to
seamless transit
It's always been hard for people in Ajax and
Pickering to understand why it has traditional-
ly been so difficult to get around the region on
our seemingly connected transit systems.
But, through jurisdictional limitations, bud-
getary considerations and even a dash of turf
protection. Durham's transit systems have been
unable to effectively meet the regional com-
muter needs of area residents to augment the
services offered by GO Transit.
But to their credit, municipalities across
Durham last year began another series of nego-
tiations to provide better inter -municipality
transit services so it would be relatively easy
for commuters to cross the region in a "seam-
less" transit system.
A big, step toward a so-called seamless sys-
tem was taken this week when Ajax officials
announced the Town's intention to establish a
link with Whitby. Coupled with an existing
transit agreement between Pickering and Ajax,
the new K'hitbv link would open up a connec-
tion all the way from Pickering to Oshawa.
With continued negotiation and political
will, surely the remaining transit systems in
Durham can reach further agreement and erase
transit boundaries from Pickering to Claring-
ton.
Ajax and Pickering have already led the way
in establishing co-operative connections. Whit-
by is likely to join the effort.
Clearly, there is a demand from transit users
across the region to ride on a seamless system.
We're also living in a climate where cost -effi-
ciency and the elimination of service duplica-
tions are being demanded. If the existing tran-
sit authorities can manipulate schedules and re-
sources to make it happen, it can.
One day, if the political resolve to make it
work is there, we can have that seamless sys-
tem.
And transit commuters will benefit in the
end.

In the name of democracy
To the editor-
Democracy
ditorDemocracy is truly a wonderful institu-
tion. The numerous and sometimes almost
incredulous privileges of a "democratic
society" are something which we, as indi-
viduals, should be prepared to protect, re-
main cognizant of, and be grateful for, at
all times.
The essence of democracy is surely the
preeminent right and well-being of society
as a whole. A right which should never be
superseded by the imposition of some bel-
ligerent, supercilious, arrogant individual
fuelling his or her ego, while advocating
civil disobedience, under the guise of in-
dividual democratic right%.
A classic example of the aforemen-
tioned type of individualis CUPW Mss
Daryll Tingley, who Flagrantly promoted
civil disobedience, threatening to shut
down highways, bridges and airports,
along with whatever else it takes. Mr. Tin-
gley's adherence to civil disobedience,
coupled with his hackneyed confronta-
tional rhetoric, is somewhat reminiscent
of the ominous style and technique so vig-
orously espoused by the ' rabble- routiers'
in Adolph Hitler's Nazi Germany of the
1930s.

Maybe I'll withhold my taxes too
To the editor:
Hats off to Pickering Mayor Wayne
Arthurs and Town Council for endorsing a
plan by Greater Toronto Area municipal
leaders to withhold property taxes from the
Province. The goal, as explained by Mayor
Arthurs, is to determine the amount of prop-
erty tax revenue GTA members should for-
ward to the Province in order to keep the
downloading process revenue -neutral.
I think it is a great idea, and I am going
to apply these concepts to my personal situ-
ation as well. As a private sector employee,
I am expecting a zero --per cent salary in-
crease for the third year running. With my
expense costs increasing and my revenue
constant year after year, my power as a con-
sumer is decreasing.
I believe what is good for the Town must
surely be good for me, so I will withhold an
amount of property taxes to maintain a de-
sirable financial situation in my household.
Certainly the Town will waive all fines and
penalties, as it is apparent they seek the
same treatment from the Province for delin-
quent taxes.
Thank you again, Mayor Arthurs, for the
fine leadership you are demonstrating.

I said goodbye to an old and very dear
friend last weekend. Tears were shed and
my heart was broken. But a man's gotta do
what a man's gotta do.
On Sunday, Jan. 11, I began to follow
through with my New Year's resolution of
not watching TV in 1998. 1 ended — at least
for now — the most intense and longest
running relationship I've had.
I went over to my brother's castle in
North York (mostly to cop a free meal) and
left my TV and converter. On Saturday. I
gave my VCR to an ekctronicaily-deprived
couple in Clarington.
There are several reasons why I'm un-
plugged.
First and foremost is the amount of time
I spent watching TV It wasn't uncommon
for me to go home, turn on the tube and, be-
fore i knew it it was bedtime. Where did the
night go'? What did I watch'? What did 1
miss'? Why didn't I do something else'?
Another rection is 1 want a challenge.
Granted, this is nothing like Columbus sa-
ting off from Spain to explore the unknown
or the Enterprise on Star Trek boldly going
where no human has been before. But. it
seemed an interesting challenge to see how
kxlg I can do without TV.
This certainly isn't an exercise in elitism.
ati in "TV is beneath me". Me doing with-
out TV is like a fish out of water or a certain
sports reporter i know cut off from pizza.
Some folks can take or leave TV. I, on
the other hand, have an addictive personali-
ty, so it's all or nothing for me. I've had the
all, so now it's time for the nothing.
Now that I have all this time on my
hands, I have to figure out what I'm going
to do. I could read more. Or, there's always
exercising. Who, me'? I could clean the love
den a little more often — like once a year.
How long this will last is anybody's
guess. I'm determined to make it through
the year. Firstly, if I want to reconnect, I'll
have to go over to my brother's and beg for
my TV back. Secondly, I'll have let myself
down.
Of course, pride and initiative could go
out the window if the Boston Red Sox be-
come contenders again.

Bob Baun: The defence rests
After 17 years in
professional hockey
and more as an astute
businessman, the NHL
legend now considers
himself a simple `fresh
air inspector'

After remarkable and satisfying ca-
reers in hockey and business, Bob Baun
has retired. His inquisitive nature, how-
ever, won't allow him to completely put
his feet up.
"I'm just a fresh -air inspector now;"
laughs Mr. Baun, one of the more feared
defencemen in the National Hockey
League when he toiled with the Toronto
Maple Leafs for most of his 17 years on
ice. "I'm just taking it easy. I'm getting
bored now, though. I'm looking for an-
other opportunity:'
The soft-spoken 62 year old, who
played on four Stanley Cup -winning
teams with the Maple Leafs in their hey-
days in the 1960s, retired from hockey in
the early '70s. Now, the father of five
grown children is leaving the business
world behind for the time being, retiring
to his home in north Pickering.
Mr. Baun owned two Tim Horton's
Donuts outlets locally. The Pickering lo-
cation that he opened at Whites Road in
December of 1984 grew to once become
the franchise's most profitable store. He
later opened his Ajax outlet at the corner
of Westney Road and Bayly Street in
1989. He sold both outlets to the Tim
Horton's Donut Corporation last year.
"What it came down to is I was get-
ting tired of working seven days a week.
I haven't had a weekend off since I was
14 years old because all my jobs have al-
ways meant working weekends. I think
it's a young man's business. The fast-
food business is changing so rapidly. It's
no longer just a doughnut shop. Ithink
it's a tremendous franchise and it's very
community -minded"
Currently, the Grade 10 drop-out who
gave up school for hockey is looking to
join the information age. His fascination
with the speed of information and news
gathering today has prompted him to
look at investing in the Star Link Compa-
ny of Calgary, a satellite communications
firm.
"I have a wide range of interests and
I've always been inquisitive. I've always
been interested in the speed of communi-
cations ... I'm trying to buy a piece of the
company with friends," Mr. Baun ex-
plains.
But business was not his first love.
That belonged exclusively to hockey
which he played as a youth growing up
in Toronto's east end and then with the
Toronto Marlboros juniors in 1950.
He briefly considered a career in foot-
ball, as he thought himself a better foot-
ball player than hockey player at that
time.
He played at age 16 with the Balmy
Beach Seniors football team that includ-
ed junior hockey teammate Dan
Nykoluk, who later went on to star with
the Toronto Argonauts.
The Marlboros made me quit. They
National Hockey League legend Bob Baun remains busy, but on his own terms
these days. He lives in north Pickering with his wife, Sally, and spends some time
each year fly fishing in popular spots around North America. Below, Mr. Baun
with the Stanley Cup the Toronto Maple Leafs won in 1964.
wouldn't let me play football," recalls
Mr. Baun. "But, I think I made the right
decision."
He jumped from minor midget hockey
to the junior ranks inside of three months
at the age of 14. Two years later, he was
invited to the Toronto Maple Leafs camp
as a 16 year old in 1952. He turned pro
with the Leafs at age 19 in 1955.
During his hockey
career, he spent 11
years with the
Toronto Maple
Leafs, winning Stan-
ley Cups in 1962,
1963, 1964 and
1967, the last time
the Leafs captured
hockey's most covet-
ed trophy. He joined
the expansion Oak-
land Seals for a sea-
son, then spent an-
other one -and -a -half
years with the De-
troit Red Wings be-
fore being traded
back to the Leafs
where a broken neck
ended his career dur-
ing the 1972-73 sea-
son.
Mr. Baun's
biggest claim to fame during his long
and rewarding pro hockey career came
during the Stanley Cttp final series of
1964 between the Leafs and the Detroit
Red Wings. He scored the winning goal
in overtime in game six at Detroit's
Olympia Arena to tie the series and send
it back to Maple Leaf Gardens for a de-
ciding game seven. It was later discov-
ered he had scored the crucial goal on a
broken leg.
"I've gotten a lot of mileage out of
that goal. It's amazing how many people
still remember it. I was in Detroit last
weekend and there were a number of
people who came up to me who still had
that goal in their memory banks;" Mr.
Baun says.
The game was
played on April 23,
1964 in Detroit. He
recalls in vivid detail
how he got hurt and
the circumstances
leading up to his shot
from the point that
eluded Wings' goal -
tender Terry Saw-
chuk.
"I blocked a
shot at the blue line
from (Gordie) Howe
which went off the
side of my right leg.
I felt something at
that time. In that last
five minutes of the
game, 1 went to the
face-off circle in our
zone. Defencemen
took the face-offs at
that time and I took the face-off against
Howe. I was to take him out if I didn't
win the draw, but I won the draw and
drew the puck to the corner. I got in front
of Howe as he went for the puck and I
put weight on the leg and I fell to the ice
and they carried me off on a stretcher.
"I asked our doctor, Dr. Jim Murray,
and a Chicago doctor if I could hurt it
anymore. They said if I taped it well,
they didn't think I could hurt it much
more. They froze it and by the time I got
to the rink, Tim (Horton) and Allan Stan-
Icv were on defence for the first shift of
) ertime. (Carl) Brewer and Kent Dou-
las were to go on next, but I called
gown to Punch (Imlach) who didn't
know I had returned. I jumped over the
boards and the puck had gone into the
Detroit zone. Bill Gadsby had thrown the
puck out blindly my way. The puck was
rolling and flipping and I took a slapshot
'tnd it deflected off a stick and went in
the opposite direction. It wasn't what you
would call a classic goal."
After the game, Mr. Baun didn't seek
medical attention for his injury, but
rather hid out at a friend's farm house for
two days where he continually iced the
leg. He arrived at Maple Leafs Gardens
only hours before game seven and in-
structed Dr. Murray to ice and freeze the
leg before heading out on the ice. It was
only after the Leafs had won the Stanley
Cup that doctors discovered he had been
playing on a broken leg.
"If Punch had found out (about the
leg) he wouldn't have let me play. Red
Kelly was in as much pain as I was be-
cause he had torn knee ligaments. It was
just something I did. I didn't think about
it. When it was all over, it was over."
That goal has been recognized as
number three on the NHL's all-time big
goals, behind Bobby Orr's Stanley Cup
winner in 1970 and Maple Leaf Bill Bar-
ilko's Cup winner in 1951.
Strangely enough, Mr. Baun's fondest
memories of that era are away from the
hockev rink. In 1963, he played a round
of golf at Augusta National golf course
where he met former L.S. President
Dwight Eisenhower for lunch at the 10th
tee. He also met another U.S. President,
Richard Nixon, while waiting for a flight
at a New York airport, just after Mr.
Nixon had been defeated by John F.
Kennedy in the 1962 elections.
..A.e talked with Nixon and he knew
about the Maple Leafs and he knew that
Red Kellv had been a Member of Parlia-
ment. I became a real Nixon fan after
that. '
Known as a fierce competitor who
could deliver hone -crushing bodychecks,
Mr. Baun was recently recognized as one
of the best hitters in the game in hockey
commentator John Davidson's book
Hockey for Dummies. " 1 always enjoyed
that part of the game. 1 challenged every-
one:' he says.
Soon after his 1967 Cup victory, Mr.
Baun and wife Sally settled in the Clare-
mont area where he farmed on land ex-
propriated by the federal government for
an airport that was never built. Through-
out his hockey career and after its con-
clusion, Mr. Baun estimates, he's done
4,800 speaking engagements which have
taken him across Canada.
An avid hunter and fly fisherman, he
also prides himself as a gourmet cook,
having taken lessons from some of the
top chefs at several Toronto hotels.
Mr. Baun's been married to his wife
Sally for 41 years.
Children Jeffrey, Gregory, Brian and
Michelle all live in the area while daugh-
ter Patty resides in Lethbridge, Alberta.
He also has 11 grandchildren. All of
whom have heard the story about the fa-
mous goal he scored while playing on a
broken leg.

penses incurred during the teachers
strike last fall.
The provincial government is ex
tending the deadline to apply for ti
nancial relief for costs incurred dur
ing the strike until Feb. 6 to accom
modate people affected by the recen
ice storms in eastern Ontario.
Labour Minister Jim Flaherty an
nounced the three-week extensiot

the hoard had not received word of
the extension from the ministry.
"We did anticipate an extension
could happen because of the difficul-
ties in the east." he said. The hoard

Pickering Museum
seeks volunteers, donations
PICKERING — The recently -
formed Pickering Museum Village
Foundation is seeking financial con-
tributions and volunteers to help it
complete special projects at the mu-
seum village.
The foundation was established in
the fall of 1997 by the Pickering Mu-
seum Village Advisory Committee to
fund special projects at the local fa-
cility.
Operating and capital upkeep
costs at the village are provided for
by the Town of Pickering.
Participation in the foundation is
open to anyone interested in further-
ing the goals of' the local museum
village.
The foundation's first project is to
raise funds for the restoration of the
village's 1820s log house, the Puter-
baugh Schoolhouse.
Over $30,000 of the estimated
$70,000 required to restore the
building without using public funds
has already been raised.
The schoolhouse will be used to
provide a 19th -century learning en-
vironment for the over 13,000 stu-
dents who enjoy an education excur-
sion to the museum village every
year.
Financial contributions will be
welcomed by the foundation, but it is
also seeking volunteers who can pro-
vide time and talents that will help
run fund-raising and museum village
events, and who can come up with
plans and ideas to raise money.
Anyone who would like to help

offers a tripto' e Heart of It All
It's a sad thought that thousands of Cana-
dians on their annual pilgrimage to Southern
US destinations spare little time or thought
for the states they are passing though, other
than to top up the gas tank or grab a sand-
wich at a roadside fast food outlet.
In their rush to make their final destina-
tion in record time they are extending the
stress level they are trying to get away from,
risking a speeding ticket or worse, and
missing out on some of the finest tourist at-
tractions on the continent.
Take Ohio for example. Ranked as the
sixth most -visited state in the US for leisure
travellers, it has a diversity of tourist attrac-
tions that cater to all tastes and ages. For
families visiting Ohio the sky's the limit and
it's not afraid to talk "big". Its many theme
parks boast the tallest, fastest and most
thrilling roller coasters on earth; the Toledo
Zoo has the world's only Hippoquarium;
Dayton is home to the oldest and largest mil-
itary aviation Museum, the state has the
largest Amish community in the world and
in Adams County one of the many Native
American mounds found in Ohio measures
400 by 6 metres.
Cleveland provides entertainment for all
the family with its famed orchestra, major
league baseball and basketball and the Rock
and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum which
opened its doors last year to international
acclaim. The Metroparks Zoo features a
wondrous year-round indoor tropical rain-
forest. In July of this year, the Great Lakes
Science Center, destined to become one of
North America's greatest science museums,
will open in Cleveland.
Toledo, Glass Capital of the World, is
home to one of America's top ten art muse-
ums, with a renowned masterpiece collec-
tion and stunning neo-classic architecture.
Cincinnati's Museum Center at the Union
Terminal is one of the United States' most
impressive examples of restored Art Deco
architecture.
It houses three history museums and an
OMNIMAX theatre. In Cincinnati too you
will find a zoo with an impressive collection
of lowland gorillas and cats.
Akron's Inventure Place recognizes great
minds of the world in the National Inventors

In the wake of tragic events in the Mid-
dle East in 1997, many Canadians plan-
ning trips abroad are asking themselves: is
it safe to travel in the country I intend to
visit?
While the Canadian government recom-
mends against travel to a limited number
of high-risk countries, ultimately the deci-
sion to visit any country remains the re-
sponsibility of the traveller.
Remember the vast majority of foreign
countries have a good record of maintain-
ing public order and of protecting both
residents and tourists within their borders.
Your chances of getting a bad sunburn are
far greater than becoming a victim of vio-
lence. So plan carefully, be alert and have
a great vacation!
MEDICATION ON VACATION
If you take regular medication, CAA
Central Ontario has the following sugges-
tions to avoid hassles while travelling:
Pack an extra supply of your medica-
tion just in case you're away for longer
than expected.
Take a photocopy of your original pre-
scription, especially if you're travelling to
a country that is particularly sensitive
about drugs.
Carry an extra prescription that lists
both the generic and trade names of the
drug. If your medication is lost or stolen,
it will be easier to replace it. The same ap-
plies for glasses and contact lenses.
Always keep medications in the origi-
nal, labelled container. What looks like
antacid power to you may look like some-
thing entirely different to a foreign cus-
toms officer.

Find out if your medication, even if it's
over-the-counter, is legally available in the
countries you plan to visit.
PASSPORT PROTECTION
If you're planning to travel outside of
Canada, a valid passport is a must, re-
minds CAA Central Ontario. Not only is it
the most widely recognized form of iden-
tification, it also confirms your right to re-
enter Canada.
If you need a new passport, make sure
you allow enough time for the Passport
Office to process your application - about
five working days for walk-in customers
and 10 working days for applications sent
by mail. Passport applications are avail-
able at passport offices, Canadian mis-
sions, travel agencies and your local CAA
office. They are no longer available at post
offices.
Some countries will not let you enter if
your passport is within six months of ex-
piring. Check with the embassy or con-
sulate of the country you plan to visit for
their rules and restrictions regarding pass-
port validity and expiration.
Make a photocopy of your passport's
identification page and keep it separate
from the original when you travel. It's also
a good idea to leave a photocopy with a
friend or relative at home. These simple
steps may speed the replacement process
if you lose your passport.
If your passport is lost or stolen while
you are travelling, report the loss or theft
to the local police and them immediately
contact the nearest Canadian mission for a
replacement.

free at 1-800-567-6868. In the Toronto
area, call 416-973-3251.

turn to nature, there are 72 state parks with
everything from fascinating nature centres,

Do you know what to do for a conscious
person who has ingested poison?
A Red Cross first aid course can teach you
how to deal with poisoning and other emer-
gency situations.
Red Cross First Aid courses recognized by
the Workers Compensation Board are held
monthly at the organization's Ajax -Pickering
Community office in Pickering and its Region
of Durham branch in Oshawa.
The courses include CPR procedures which
can be performed by one adult to help adults,
infants or children, and also offer optional ,in-
struction in two -person CPR.
The eight-hour basic Emergency First Aid
course is available in Ajax -Pickering
from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday,
Feb. 7; and in Oshawa from 9 a.m. to
6 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 24.
Standard First Aid, a more com-
prehensive 16 -to- 18 -hour course (de-
pending on whether the two -person
CPR option is included), is available
in Ajax -Pickering on Saturday and
Sunday, Feb. 7 and 8 from 9 a.m. to 6
p.m.; and in Oshawa Saturday and
Sunday, Jan. 24 and 25 from 9 a.m. to
6 p.m.
Re -test courses for both Emer-
gency and Standard First Aid will be
held in Oshawa Saturday, Jan. 17
from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Fees for the courses are: Emer-
gency First Aid, $55; Standard First Aid, $70,
$90 with 'Two -Rescuer' option; Emergency
First Aid re -test, $35; and Standard First Aid
re -test, $50.
A WCB-approved course can also be made
available either at the Red Cross or at your fa-
cility on days, weekends or evenings.
The Ajax -Pickering Red Cross office is lo-
cated at 1648 Bayly St., while the Oshawa of-

Wet and wild in new thriller Hard Rain

Anastasia: A mix of action, adventure, ro-
mance and music, Anastasia is an animated
full-length film about the lost Russian
princess, the fabled last surviving member of
the Romanov family.
As Good As it Gets: Jack Nicholson,
Helen Hunt. A single mother/waitress (Hunt),
an ill-tempered writer (Nicholson) and a gay
artist (Greg Kinnear) form an unlikely friend-
ship.
Fallen: Denzel Washington, John Good-
man. Atter apprehending a demonic serial
killer, following his trial and witnessing his
execution, decorated homicide detective John
Hobbes (Washington) and his partner Jonesy
(Goodman) are suddenly faced with a new se-
ries of slayings in the late killer's peculiar
style.
Firestorm: Howie Long, Scott Glenn. For
Jessc Graves (Long) and his close-knit team
of "smokejumpers", a ferocious storm with
massive tornadoes of fire up to 600 feet high
is an all -too -regular occurrence — only this
battle comes with a twist. As Graves readies
to battle the blaze, he is unaware convicted
murderer Earl Shaye (William Forsythe) is
posing as a firefighter in an attempt to use the
firestorm to implement a daring escape.
While he struggles to battle the killer inferno,
Graves must also outsmart the human killer

Goodwill Hunting: Matt Damon, Ben Af-
fleck. Damon stars as 20 -year-old misunder-
stood orphan Will Hunting who, while work-
ing as a janitor at MIT, outshines the school's
most advanced intellectuals by solving math
problems they can't seem to handle. Howev-
er. the genius can't seem to translate his prob-
lem -solving capabilities into his personal life
and becomes caught between the worlds of
his friends — a therapist (Robin Williams), a

Tomorrow Never Dies: Pierce Brosnan,
Jonathan Pryce. There's no news like bad
news and when a new 24-hour news network
prepares to hit the airwaves, media baron El-
liot Carver (Pryce) knows nothing will ensure
a successful launch like a sensational news
event. When a British navy ship is sunk off
the coast of Vietnam, officials on both sides
inmate on the prowl for a companion, it's up
to Kenny's three pals Thurgood (Chappelle),
Scarface (Guillermo Diaz) and Brian (Jim
Breuer) to rescue him by raising the S I00SM
bail.
Hard Rain: Randy Quaid, Christian
Slater. Residents of Huntingburg, including
the sheriff (Quaid), are all too familiar with
torrid rains forcing the evacuation of the
small town and the usual related looting and
petty thefts that take place in an abandoned

town. However, what they don't realize when
the latest round of flooding drowns the town,
is that a plan's in place to rob an armoured car
transporting $3 million from local banks.
When the vehicle breaks down stranding dri-
vers Tom (Slater) and his Uncle Charlie (Ed
Asner), their call for help is intercepted and
before long they are surrounded by a suspi-
cious crew, who without warning open fire,
led by Jim (Morgan Freeman).

age to the nation's leader is kept at a mini-
mum through his uncanny ability to manipu-
late politics, the press and the American peo-

tion from the president's predicament by cre-
ating a bigger and better story — a war with-
in the hostile nation of Albania — and it dom-
