Pickering company joins Team Canada on trade mission BY SUSAN O'NEILL STAFF RFPORTFX Representatives from two area busi- nesses are heading to Latin America with Prime Minister Jean Chrctien this month as part of a Team Canada Trade Mission to promote Canadian goofs and services abroad. Bayly Communications Inc. of Ajax and Canadian International Core Hous- ing Inc. of Pickering are two of the 433 companies, educational institutions and municipalities confirmed to take part in the 14 -day trade mission to Mexico, Brazil, Argentina and Chile later this month. "It's a good opportunity for us;' says Jeff Bowers, president of Canadian Inter- national Core Housing Inc. which ex- ports and constructs prefabricated hous- ing overseas. The company, which re- cently completed a 147 -home subdivi- sion in Spain, is joining the mission in Santiago, Chile from Jan. 20 to 23 in the hope of furthering a number of housing projects in the area. Being a member of the team "puts you a step further ahead" in the international market, Mr. Bowers says, adding while the company is not participating in the entire mission, it hasn't ruled out the pos- sibility of expanding to the other three countries in the future. "'There has been enormous interest in Christmas bonus for Pickering man: X2.8 million PICKERING -- A 42 -year old Pickering man spent the Christmas holidays in "total shock" after realiz- ing his numbers came up in Lotto 6/49's Christmas Eve draw. "It's pretty overwhelming," said Mike Jones Monday just moments before receiving a $2.8 -million cheque at the Ontario Lottery Corpo- ration's Toronto prize office. "Right now I'm just sitting back taking it all in." The 10 -year Pickering resident said he checked the numbers on the ticket he purchased at Beckers in Brooklin while at a friend's house on Boxing Day, adding he left the ticket in a safe place overnight and double checked it the next day just to be sure. "I wasn't sure at first," he said. "I couldn't believe it ... I was in total shock." While Mr. Jones said he's taking some time off his job as a technician at a packaging company in Toronto, he adds he plans to return to work. "I'm not a flamboyant guy. I'm not going to buy 50 speed boats," he said. The Pickering man says he plans to invest some of the money and will help out some of his friends. As for himself, he said he'll probably take a vacation and is thinking about buying a house and "a nice new lux- ury car." MIKE JONES `Total shock' Team Canada 98;' said the prime minis- ter in his announcement of the mission in mid-December. The delegation, which includes Cana- da's 10 premiers and two territorial lead- ers, is primarily composed of representa- tives from small and medium-sized com- panies from across the country. Business delegations led by the prime minister have been travelling to develop- ing markets under the Team Canada um- brella since 1994. And according to the Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade, Team Canada missions have generated over $22 billion in contracts for partici- pants to date and have helped more than 1,0(X) Canadian companies make con- tacts and seal business deals around the world. Statistics from the department also indicate that together the four countries to be visited on the mission accounted for more than $3.3 billion of Canada's ex- ports in 1996, while the total Canadian foreign investment in these countries was approximately $20 billion last year. Sonic dealers in western Canada have already adopted the 'Optimum Used Ve- hicles' brand name, while GM outlets in Durham Region should have a new look for their used cars by February. GM dealers in Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba are the first to install the 'Optimum Used Vehicles' signs and by early February the brand will be nationwide, says Curt Tingley, GM of Canada's director of corporate brand marketing. Coulson Donald Woolner of no fixed address is accused of kidnapping the: child from her bedroom while her moth- er slept in another room early Oct. 9, 1996. Durham Regional Police at the time said the mother went to check on her daughter and. after being awakened by noises, discovered her missing from her bead. The rear door of the house was found ajar but there was no sign of forced entry, police said. The girl's dis- appearance sparked a massive pre -dawn search involving more than 100 volun- teers, police and neighbours. About six hours later, two co-workers of the girl's father, who left work to join the search, discovered the frightened four-year-old inside a shed behind an Ontario Street house. She was barefoot, wearing only a nightgown. A shirtless suspect was captured and arrested following a brief foot chase involving local residents. The girl, whose family has since moved away loom the area, was taken to Whitby General Hospital where doctors confirmed she had been sexually as- saulted, though not raped police said. Mr. Woolner, who has been in cus- tody since his arrest, has been ordered to stand trial on charges of kidnapping, forcible confinement and sexual assault. L IS 2H5 Publisher: Tim Whittaker ♦ Editorial Bright futures Chances are you celebrated a wish for a happy and pros- perous new year the night before last. It's a good bet that if you examine the fundamental forces which help shape our lives, your wish will come true in 1998. Let's take stock barely two days beyond the year that was: The federal government has declared victory over its budget deficit battle. Provincially. the Harris government heads into this brand new year ahead of current deficit tar- gets. As of yesterday, you received one more incremental tax cut as part of the total 30 -per cent decrease promised by the Province. Ontario leads the nation in job creation. interests rates remain comparatively low and consumer spending is on the rise. Caaada's sagging loonie, we're told, is simply underval- ued on world currency markets and it's not much for us to worry about given the strong cconornic fundamentals found in Canada. In total, these individual elements add up to what could be quite a rosy year for Canadians. Times arc so good a report suggests Durham Region would even benefit from Quebec separation. Don't get the wrong idea: we don't support a divided Canada. But either way, it looks like the future is bright economically in Durham. If you're working (and more of you arc today than were last year at this time). you're one of the people who helped bolster the businesses and services in Durham Region in the last vcar. Thosc businesses, :n turn, require larger inventories to meet increased demand, which means more jobs, which means more products. which means a stronger local econo- my. and so on. If we can embrace this sense of optimism, if we can lead off the new year with a belief in a brighter future, it can be- come a self-fulfilling prophecy. The fundamentals are in place. We've shed the stigma of recession and have begun to discover the benefits of con- sumer confidence. A new year lies ahead full of the promise of prosperity. Embrace it, celebrate it, because success can indeed be fleeting. Let's make the most of a situation we've not seen so far in the 1990s. After the lean years of our recent past, we deserve it. To the editor: Re: Ajax By The Lake New logo — new image. Tlx; hardest pan will be to live up to this image. There is a real challenge in keeping our shorelines and waterways beautiful. Free from pollution and urban sprawl. Pro- testing our wetlands, forests and wildlife. Wetlands (bogs, marshes. etc.) are producers of life, some being equal in output to a tropical rain forest. Wetlands lock up carbon, thereby preventing it from entering the atmosphere as carbom dioxide, the principal culprit of global warming. Wetlands provide feeding, spawning and nursery grounds for many species. They are habitat for a third of our resident birds, half of migratory ones and many plants and animals already en- dangered or threatened. Wetlands absorb and filter pollutants that would otherwise degrade lakes, rivers, aquifers. Inland marshes sponge up runoff, reducing flood crests down- stream. Wetlands stabilize shorelines and riverbanks. Our responsibility for protecting these rich and complex ecosystems is not only local, but global as well. We can not lose anymore of our prime natural resource — wetlands — wildlife and fish habitat. floxxl control. clean water, beauty. Sadly, however, the urban sprawl stems to have no limits. Politicians ac- cepting co ntributions from developers will not help the environment. It would be naive to think they don't expect any- thing in return for every dollar they give. A new development is under way at LyrxJc Shore, next to the wetlands. An- other is slated cast and west from Shoal Point Road. Tex: development cast of Shoal Point Road was set to have a 120- rrx:tre buffer zone between the develop- ment and Carruthers Creek. No one seems to know —including the town — where this buffer zone is measured from. On the west side of Shoal Point Road the development provides no buffer zone toward Carruthers Creek. A walk from Shoal Point Road to Bayly Street along Carruthers Creek re- veals recent development along the creek with the lots sloping towards the creek. Runoff will carry lawn fertilizers and pesticides into the creek, to the lake and eventually into our drinking water. Ajax, with its natural shoreline, parks, wetlands, forests could be a beautiful place to live and work. Promoting the town as such with a commitment to environment will at- tract firms and people with similar concerns to the community. GILLIGAN Ajax Staff Writer Bob's booms makes good reading I spent part of the Christmas holidays doing a most proletarian of activities — reading former Ontario Premier Bob Rae's autobiography, From Protest to Power. Like most autobiographies, there's a self-serving tone to it. A lot of 'I was right, they were wrong'. But. there was also the admission that the New Democ- ratic Party made mistakes in power, like letting the deficit get out of hand. Rac argues, and I agree, his govern- ment was plagued by the recession. Rev- enues dropped through the floor and ex- penditures, namely welfare spending. went through the roof. As one of the chapters is titled. Anyone Can Sail in Good Weather. He also makes the argument that the NDP ha; to change its policies or it's dox)mcd to spending the rest of its time: in opposition. There's more than a grain of truth in that. The Golden Era of Eco- nomic Growth — the post-war years up to the mid-1970s — are over and politi- cal parties have to adapt to the new real- ities. What's the saying about generals fighting this war like they did the last one? Adopting new policies doesn't mean the NDP have to become a kinder and gentler version of the Torics. -Social democracy is about enlarging the scope and prospects for freedom and well-being, ensuring that people arc treated equally and without discrimma- tion, and reinforcing our sense of soli- darity and what we owe each other and future generations. This is the basis for a vigourous public agenda ... It is no the eradication of capitalism that we should be seeking, but the strengthening of our community, and a broader, more democ- ratic economy;' he writes. There's one glaring oversight in the book — omitting former Durham West MPP Jim Wiseman. If nothing else, just put Jim's name in so he can show it to his grandchildren. I bought the paperback version, be- cause that's the proletarian thing to do. It's also cheaper, although at $9.99 plus GST, not by much. According to the person who has become their spokesman, Cecil Gerrard, the residents feel they have been "tricked". They're upset changes made for the Town's new Official Plan have raised the density of homes permitted in the new Marianna Gardens subdivision to up to 30 units per hectare instead of the max- imum of 12 per hectare allowed under the old District Plan. Mr. Gerrard says when Buckingham Gate residents bought their new homes imme- diately southeast of Brock Road and Third Concession Road one to three years ago, they were told only properties similar to their own in terms of building and lot size would be built in the area just south of them. "if we would have known at that time that this would be done no one would have bought in the subdivision. When we moved into the subdivision we were told the property behind us would have 30 homes. The applicant, Marianna Gardens Ltd., has proposed building 59 detached homes. most with frontages of 12 me- tres (40 ft.), on 4.23 hectares. There would also be three addi- tional homes constructed on adjacent land remaining from Buckingham Gate also owned by the applicant. About 150 residents showed up at a Nov. 20 Town public in- formation meeting on Marian- na Gardens to express their ob- jections to the new subdivision. They were concerned the new hi-herneighbourhood would not be compatible with Buckingham Gate; that it would create traffic and safety problems in their neighbour- hood because the two subdivi- sions would share only one point of access; and that con- struction vehicles passing through their neighbourhood to get to the new site would cause disruption and damage roads. As a result of residents' con- ccrns, says Geoff McKnight of the Pickering planning depart- ment, the developer has been asked to have a traffic analysis prepared to forecast the amount of additional traffic the new subdivision would create at the shared point of access at Southcott and Third Concession Roads. When that study is complete, likely in February, a meeting will he- set up between repre- sentatives of the commu- nity. the developer and Town staff: -At that point we'll go through the checklist as to what their concerns were and ways to resolve some of them;' says Mr. McKni-ht. He notes the development can only go ahead with a rezoning from Town Council, and that the Official Plan clearly states infill devel- opment such as that being proposed in this case must be compatible with surrounding neigh- hourhoods. The applica- tion won't likely go to Council until the early spring. At the event, donated items were auctioned off and raised $5,000 for needy families. This amount was subsequently matched by Sutton Group Heritage Realty Inc., bringing the grand total to $10,000.00. The ultimate goal of this great community effort was to sponsor 5 local needy families, fill their Christmas gift lists, and provide them with a full Christmas dinner. Additionally, 200 turkeys were purchased from a local Loeb and were given to the Salvation Army to be included in their "Christmas Hampers" for more needy families. Forty turkeys were given each day for five days starting Dec. 20th. Sutton Group President, Wayne Einhorn, called the event "...a tremendous cooperative effort to give something back to the community who supports us throughout the entire year." Newsroom 683-5110 Pickering choirs sing the BY At_ RIvF-t-r SIAII RIiPONII:N PICKERING — A Pickering school took top honours and won $1,000 towards the school's music program at the third annual Festival of Choirs competition hosted by Pickering Town Centre this month. Pickering Christian School emerged as the winning choir from 25 other school choirs from across Durham Region which performed at the annual event. In addition to the $1,000, the school also earned gold medals for each choir member along with the Festival of Choirs trophy. E. A. Fairman Public School choir of Whitby placed second at the choir festival and was awarded $650 for their music program, as well as silver medals for each choir member. Third place went to the ccole Corpus Christie school choir of Oshawa. The third -plan finish- er received $350 and bronze medals for each choir member. This year marked a special new twist to the competition. as the top 10 choirs, plus the winning choir from last year. were invited back to the Pickering Town Centre for a sing -off. During the sing -off a pro- fessional recording studio was hired to record a song by each of the choirs to be featured on a CD. The CD is currently undergoing remix- ing at a studio with the end product to he released in November 1998. The CD. says Pickering Town Centre marketing manager Andrea Kelter. will be available fix sale in the mall as well as in Durham Re - FAX: 683-7363 Get one FREE :xpfres Jan. 16/98 603 Kingston Rd. She expects the sale of the CD to raise approximately $50X) to $ I0,000 for each of the whoois. " With all the cutbacks in educa- tion, the cutbacks tend to affect spe- cial programs like music and drama first, so we feel it's really important that we give something back to the quality of life in our community;' says Ms. Kelter. In the spring, the Pickering Town Centre will invite an students from across the region to submit entries for the CD's cover art. The addition of the fund-raising CD to the annual competition will definitely ensure continued growth to the event, says Ms. Kelter. In it first year. in 1995, nine choirs participated, while 15 choirs took part last year. "We think with the release of the CD next year, this event will defi- nitely explode;' she says. In the spring, the Pickering Town Centre will host a concert band competition among Durham Region schools, tentatively slat- ed for April. Ms. Koper hopes the event will develop into a warm- up for the band prior to the annual Kiwanis Music Festival in Oshawa. Again, the premise behind the competition and the CD which will also be released after the event. says Ms. Kelter, is to feature local school concert ban(.L~ to a large audience as well as to help in the funding of the band programmes.
