after him.
"Just what are professional activity
days7" you mutter under your breath.
If you think a PD day — or profes-
sional development day, as it's also
known — isjus(a holiday for teachers,
you're not alone.
"There has been a lot of criticism of
professional activity days:' concedes
Durham Board of Education staff de-
velopment officer Norm Green, who
admits "professional development is a
hit of a misnomer.
"The board does a little bit of train-
ing around the edges, but professional
development days are used primarily
for teachers to meet with parents.
That's why most are scheduled around
report cards. Parents _work different
hours and not everyone can meet with
teachers in the evening" when parent -
teacher inter hews were traditionally
held.

Early in the school year, staff at
each school use professional activity
days to set goals. Mr. Green refers to it
as "school building" and points to a
school which may choose to focus on
language one year. Staff will look at
the language programme in each
grade, consider the sequence of skill
development and ensure all teachers
understand the expectations of the pre-
vious and following grades.
"It's a time for staff to talk about
curriculum and programming as it re-
lates to students:" explains Mr. Green.
"You can't discount the need for teach-
ers to talk to one another. They do
meet after school, but each school will
have a minimum of five or six major
committees after school, so there's less
time for staff to get together and talk
about their goals"
In selecting the school's focus, staff
may look at what they see as a weak-
ness in previous years or at something
they need to work on as a result of new

Merry Christmas
to all and to all
a good read
In Canada we ccichrate Thanksgiving. but the real time
for giving thanks in this country is at Christmas time. It's an
opportunity for all of us to give thanks for all we have. espe-
cially for our loved ones. it's also a time when we give to
those less fortunate and take stock of the world we live in.
It's often easy to point out what's wrong with our world.
In the news business. in fact, it's stock -m -trade. Good news
is news, it'. Just that it doesn't interest most people nearly as
much as had news does. A murder. a fire. a major car acci-
dent. arrests. blood and death will continue to interest and
fascinate human beings until the end of time.
But the spirit of Christmas brings forward another side of
the news. For the last fewweeks our pages have been full of
notices for food hanks, blood donor clinics. chanty drives —
a seemingly endless number of good news stories And that's
a tribute first. Iasi and always to the generous spirit of our
readers who prove throughout the year, but especially at
Christmas rime. their concern for their fellow man.
From the carol -singing group of residents on Listowcll
Crescent who help collect food and toys for needy families
in Pickering and Ajax, to the bho d donor clinics which are
held at this time of year. to the good works of our active and
vibrant service clubs, to the numerous (and we mean numer-
oust food and toy drives organi/ed by businesses. service
club members, police officers. firefighters and churches.
near] everybody seems to le helping.
There will always be a need to help those less fortunate.
Statistics indicate giving has risen in Canada over the last
few years as businesses. service clubs and individuals have
stepped up to till the void by government cutbacks.
The spirit of giving, especially at Christmas -time, is alive
and well.
So, this Christmas, we give thanks to those who make the
season special, csroccialh for those less fortunate. Thank sou
to all our readers for your concern for others, for your will-
ingness to help-

As a longtime resident of
Ajax ( 1949 on) and a concerned
citizen who takes an active inter-
est in municipal affairs, I must
come 4r Mayor Steve Parish's
defence. I am retcmng to the
two items which were reported
in the Ajax New< Adyeniser
(Ccuncdlors L*Wct w chole for
new Ajax deputy mayor - Dec.
3. and Ajax councillor hacker
over Durham Region chairman's
vote - Dec. 101. 1 would now
like to comment on these two
items as follows.
Up to now 1 had always
thought that a "bickering" Town
Council was confined to our
neighbour to the west, namely
"Pickering but i was wrong.
Vic can heat them at their game,
hands down.
Firstly. If a procedural bylaw
allows the mayor to appoint the
deputy mayor, so he it. The
opinion expressed that "our
neighbours always have regional
councillors serve as acting
mayor" is irrelevant. It is their
prerogative. As long as the pro-
cedural bylaw is on the books in
Ajax, and it should stay there,
the mayor of the day cannot he
faulted when making the ap-
pointment. Come to think of it. I
never heard much about a
deputy mayor until Roger An-
derson was given that title two
years ago.
I consider it rather presump-
tuous for rookie Ward i and 2
Regional Councillor Scott
Crawford to say, " I only look at
this as a slap in the face to my-
self and Coun. McMaster", and
'As the longest serving council-
lor (on the current council) I
have trouble with the way I was
overlooked".
Overlooked, indeed! At the
time of speaking he had not yet
been sworn in as regional coun-
cillor, nor had he got his feet wet
at the regional level of govern-
ment.
Secondly, I completely agree
with Steve Parish when he is
quoted as saying, "I believe it's
essential in a democracy that a
person who holds such a high
political office has a mandate
from the people" and "Mr.
Arthurs, in his nine years as
Pickering mayor, has a clear, un-
equivocal mandate. Mr. Ander-
son didn't have a mandate from

order to get back at the teachers
(or to win votesi the Ontario

pensate parents for the "incon-
vcnicnce" of the teachers' strike
by handing out 5400 of the tax-
payers' money to any family
that ha► a cfulcl 13 yo:ars.of age
and under in school
Thi, mean, that stay at-
home moms, anyone out of the
workforce, on family assistance
or unemployment insurance or
social service benefit. and par-
ents, like me, who have a 13-
ycar-old who is old enough to
legally hahysit quality for the
$400.
Whether you were for the
strike or against it. something is
definitely wrong with this. I
was not inconvenienced by the
strike and, even if I was. 1 do
not feel the teachers are respon-
sible for my habvsitting proh-
lems. My children are my rc-
spnsibility, and teachers are
not, as their title indicates,
babysitter.
Now 1 have a question of
principle -- du I take the
money? Well, why not -- it's
free, no questions asked. I will
take the money and give it back
to our heal school. I have been
in touch with the PTA of our
school and we are hoping that
there are a lot of parents out
there who feel the way 1 do. If
10 people give their compensa-
tion money, the school could
buy two computers.
I find it very hard to take
$400 for free when the teachers
lost two weeks wages for some-
thing that they believed in.

Deaf people have rights
1 was born deaf and 1 am a native
American Sign Language user which
means ASL is my first language and Eng-
lish, in fact. is my second language. 1 have
a kind, patient, friendly and caring per-
unality. I teach basic ASL to families that
have deaf children and I'm a certified
ASL instructor at Durham College. In my
work with hearing people. I have strived
to always he sensitive and respectful of
their language and culture. recognizing
that when I offer respect, my students re-
spond with respect for my language and
my deaf culture.
1 was raised in Nova Scotia and at-
tended a Olcaf school for 1.5 years. My ex-
periences as a deaf person in Nova Scotia
were very positive. Toe public seemed to
he aware of deaf people, their unique lan-
guage and culture. When 1 moved to
Toronto, my experiences as a deaf person
there were once again very positive as the
public seemed very aware of the issues
surrounding access. I root my future hus-
band while living in Toronto and we
moved to Durham Region.

The project is designed to create
more than 16 jobs during the four-year
design stage and an additional 30
"long-term jobs" during the production
phase. Mr. Manley said. "Projected
sales are expected to exceed $100 mil-
lion over the next 10 years"
Mr. Manley said the TPC investment
will help the local economy.

When we begin to tidy away
some of the day's clutter, think
3Rs and Blue Box. Cards can be
reused as tags. he made into lit-
tle boxes, or cut in half and used
as post cards fur next year. Rih-
bons and hows. as well as gift
paper, can he reused. All un-
wanted paper can be recycled
by setting out a box of paper on
your Blue Box day.
Be sure to weigh it down
with your Blue Box of glass, tin

ten boxes and put them in with
your corrugated cardboard and

prise to man people- it doesn't have anv aliens
trying to take over the world' Instead. they are
trying' to help us.
Jodie Foster plays a radio astronomer who is
listening it) the stars. hoping that one day she will
hear a signal coming from another planet. After
having to beg for funding when the government
cancels her project, she moves on n1 new loca-
tions. never w ilhng to give up. One day, she hears
one.
This signal causes worldwide panic and cele-
bration simultaneously. McConaughey leads
many to his belief that technology may not he
bettering society but taking away from it. Then
things get really tricky. They discover that hidden
in the radio message are blueprints for a machine:
a machine that acts as a transporter to another
world.
This sci-fi film has many interesting characters
and wonderful scenes. It plays the struggle be-
tween science and religious faith beautifully.
Jodie Foster is excellent In her role. The special
effects by Industrial Light and Magic are also a
highlight and not the showcase: of the film.

loves Michael (Mulroney) and he should marry

watch together. There is one line of dia-
logue in the film that may offend some
people, but it passes by very quickly \,
