The study was a joint project of the Town and Durham Region, undertaken after the Province handed authority over Hwy. 2 to Durham Region. Until that point, the Town's hands had been tied in its attempts fit improve the area and requests to the Province to change the character of Kingston Road were turned down by Quccn's Park. Durham Region has been much more receptive to Pickering's desire to improve the road. Initial projects for the transforma- tion — such as preparation of con- struction guidelines for the downtown core and Rougentount Village:moi preparation of construction drawings for proposed western and eastern 'gateways' along Kingston Road -- will be reviewed as part of the Town's 1998 budget. In Ajax. Town staff will consult property owners in the .Ajax Plaza on how they could improve their hold- ings in what could be the first step of a facelift for the entire downtown core. Staff will draw up business plans to show property owners in the landmark plaza on Harwood Avenue how the} stand to gain from redeveloping their hold- ings. The biggest challenge Town staff face is getting the 15 or so landlords in the plaza to buy into the plan. Some may be unwilling to spend money to spruce up their properties because they're satisfied with the rents they're getting from the merchants leasing their stores and office space. Still others will see any expenditures required to redevelop their properties as a long-term in- vestment in retaining customers or re -attracting patrons who now shop at the big box stores along Hwy. —' just east of Harwood Avenue. Working in Ajax staff's favour is the fact that the Town owns the plaza parking lot, making it the largest property owner there. So, the Town "can he a leader in the creation of the new downtown." :.ays planner Stuart Craig. Additionally, Ajax officials are said to he eyeing the plaza as the site of a Town facility which could "lead to other spin-offs". UE< EMM t 17,1"7.lAGE 7 AN OPEN LETTER TO PICKERING AND AREA RESIDENTS. Last Thursday Ontario Hydro held a public meeting to share our Report Card on performance of the Pickering Nuclear Generating Station and the progress being made in our nuclear recovery plan. It was an opportunity for us to assure you that our plant continues to operate safely while we improve performance, and a chance for the residents of Pickering and area to listen, question and discuss how we can further improve. On behalf of myself, Pickering Site Vice President Gene Preston and the staff of Ontario Hydro Pickering, I would like to thank everyone who attended the meeting. We were very encouraged by your interest, response and support. The concerns you expressed are being taken very seriously. Q Issues raised included the need for Ontario Hydro to continue to communicate openly and honestly-, tritium levels in Pickering discharge water; and the request for an Environmental Assessment (EA) to enable Pickering residents to know the extent of air and water emissions from the plant. 4 When I first came to Ontario Hydro almost a year ago I made a commitment that we would be open and accessible to the public throughout the nuclear recovery process. During the past three months we have met twice with Pickering Town Council where eight issues were raised. Actions on five are now complete and three are in progress, with completion expected by February 1998. Ontario Hydro 4 In our continued efforts to work with the community to ensure that your concerns are addressed, I invite you to send written comments or questions to Pat O'Brien, Manager, Public Affairs, at the Pickering Nuclear Generating Station. 4 Although independent testing is already being done by both the Ministry of Labour and Ontario Hydro, I have publicly committed to take the lead in providing additional independent testing of drinking water supply at the Ajax Water Supply Plant near the Pickering Generating Station. 4 I will respond to the written questions of Durham Nuc+ear Awareness on proposed reduced limits for tritium being discharged into the lake. 40 Two suggestions to improve our communications have been implemented. Our Report Cards are now available on Ontario Hydra's web site at www.hydro.on.ca, and reports and studies have been placed in the Pickering libra.y. This is being extended to all libraries in the Durham region. I look forward to future meetings with you and your community leaders. Together, we can achieve our goal of world dans operation, induding , environmental performance. 7#Z/4w' G. It was five years ago. when he was only eight himself. " N1y parents didn't want to go through Christmas that year. well. I still wanted Christmas. You still have to have that celebration. Even it'you don't want it the kids still want it:' Kevin told parents at the No- vember meeting of the Bereaved Families of On- tano, Durham Region. Although still filled with fresh grief from the loss of their daughter. Kevin's parents recognized their son's need to continue this tradition. Thev chose to recognize the holidays in a pared -down version of the family's usual celebration. "I think, actually. Kevin helped us that first year:' says Gary Goswell. Kevin's father and the new co- urdinaux for the Durham group. "Because of him, we made the eflbn. It took careful planning but. 1 think subsequent Christmases terve been easier hl- causl of it" For many bereaved families, Christmas. (or anv other religious holiday sLas n) is the hardest time of the year. N12ny families speak of the desire to "hi- bLrnate" between November and Januan. In fact. even six years after the death of her mother. Cindy Burnell. a tacilitator with the Metro Toronto Be- reaved Families children's program. says this time of year is sell very difficult for her. It is especially hard because her mother died on New Year', Day. Coping with the season: With all the reminders of Christmas in our com- munities, it isn't practical to try to ignore the season. However. acknowledging it doesn't have to mean doing everything the same way. Following are some suggestions for getting through the swan from Be- reaved Families of Ontano-Durham Region: • Acknowledge this year will be different. Elimi- nate w hat you treed to. Then: is nothing you must do and gnef depletes energy. Keep it simple if that helps and get lots of rest. • it's okay to say no to imitations, to change your mint] at the last minute or to leave engagements earl. • Be aware of your feelings. Throughout the Re- gion there will be decorations. music and people rushing around seemingly with a purpose. This may increase your own fellings of isolation and alien- ation. This is a normal reaction. • Cine yourself permission to change whatever traditions you need tot change. Nothing is written in stone' • Change the time, location and menu of tradi- tional meals. Or. eliminate them altogether this year. Decorate differenth or have aimeone else decorate.
