Former MPP eyes
Durham chairmanship
BY KEITH GILLIGAN
STAFF REPORTER
If they call him, former Durham
':est MPP Jim Wiseman will come.
Mr. Wiseman's name is
being put forward for the po-
sition of Durham Region
Chairman by Ajax Civic
Award winner Martin Olen -
root.
"As I told Martin 'If they
call. I will answer';' says Mr.
Wiseman, New Democrat
MPP from 1990 to '95, when
he lost to Progressive Con-
servative Janet Ecker. "if Re-
gional Council wanted to
vote me chairman, I'd do it"
Mr. Olenroot suggests Mr.
Wiseman would be a good
choice for chairman because
"He's been in politics and knows the
provincial government. He's also fa-
miliar with local politics. Most of all,
he's one person who can make himself
available"
Durham Council will pick a new
chairman Wednesday. Dec. 3 to re-
place Jim Witty, who's retir-
ing. Anyone can be selected
chairman, if they're nominat-
ed by a member of Regional
Council on that day.
Among those in the running
for the job are Pickering
Mayor Wayne Arthurs and
defeated Ajax mayoralty can-
didate Roger Anderson.
"People just elected (in the
Nov. 10 municipal election)
shouldn't put their name for-
ward:' says Mr. Olenroot.
"It's the wrong way to thank
people who voted for them.
People just got elected and they say

PICKERING — Detectives
investigating last month's
shooting at a Pickering dance
hall, which left six wounded.
have now questioned hundreds
of witnesses, however, the lead
officer in the case remains
vague on whether an arrest is
near.
A gunman, flanked by two
other men and armed with a 9 -
mm weapon, burst into the
crowded Robin Hood Inn ban-
quet hall and opened fire just
after midnight Oct. 5. Five of
the victims between the ages of
17 and 22 were shot in the leg
st witnesses
while a sixth suffered a
flesh wound to the hand,
Durham Regional Police said.
The shooting spree lasted
just a few seconds and sent pa-
trons running for cover.
Though the numbers were
disputed by the inn's manage-
ment, police said there were as
many as 500 people in the
dance hall, at 1999 Altona Rd.
"It looks like a random
shooting." Detective Keith
Kritzer of 19 division said at the
time.
The detective said Monday a
team of officers has interviewed
about 270 patrons who were
present during the shooting.
Many were shown photo line-
ups.
Det. Kritzer said another
"hundred or so (witnesses) have
actively evaded us" by refusing
to show up for interviews or
failing to answer questions. At
least two have been charged
with obstructing police for giv-
ing false names to investigating
officers. he added.
Det. Kritzer said many peo-
ple are fearful of speaking to
police. "There is a genuine fear
here. These people (suspects)
went out and shot people for no
reason known to us. So imagine
what they would do if they had
(a reason) to go after someone."
While it was initially be-
lieved there were as many as
two gunmen, forensic tests on
shell casings seized by police
show there was just the one
shooter. Det. Kritzer said.
When asked if any arrests in
the case were imminent. he re-
mained vague. "We might have
nobody to look at and then sud-
denly tomorrow we'll have
three people under arrest."

sounds better to me'. That's wrong. It's
not right"
Mr. Olenroot notes in a letter to the
News Advertiser, "Ambition can some-
times work against those who are not
satisfied with what they already have."
As an MPP, Mr. Wiseman put for-
ward a private member's bill in 1994
calling for the Durham Chairman to be
elected at large.
"I have a little difficulty with the
whole process," says Mr. Wiseman, an
Ajax resident who teaches at Ajax
High School. "People should have in-
volvement in the process of how the
most powerful person in Durham is
picked.
"Anybody can be picked chairman.
It's one of the weaknesses in the way
we determine who we pick the chair-
man;" Mr. Wiseman adds.

The truth about
Bill 160
As the time for third reading of Bill 160 nears, honest
consideration of the bill and its implications is essential.
Bill 160 will not destroy public education. It is in reality
designed to improve a system which has come under attack
time and again for decades.
It will take principals and vice -principals out of the teach-
ers' union and place them squarely in management positions
where they belong. And, contrary to the misinformed ranti-
ngs of some Bill 160 opponents, these positions will not be
replaced by non -teaching managers. Bill 160 clearly defines
a principal as a teacher appointed by a board to perform the
duties of a principal. There are businesses all across Durham
where non-union managers and union employees work side
by side as teams. We believe our educators can do the same.
Bill 160 will prevent local school boards from hiking
property taxes with no appreciable gain in education quality
to show for it. And it will prevent school boards from in-
creasing class sizes to satisfy the contract demands of teach-
ers. In a post -Bill 160 world, boards of education would be
forced to manage finances and staff allocation in a way
which would prevent class sizes from spiralling out of con-
trol.
With the Fewer School Boards Act, Bill 160 will find
$667 million in savings in a $14 billion system - that
amounts to four per cent of the total amount spent on edu-
cation.
It will bring teacher preparation time in Ontario high
schools to the national average, not beyond it. Until now, On-
tario high school teachers have spent one half-hour less in the
classroom than their counterparts in the rest of the country.
There will he fewer teachers in Ontario after the Bill has
been passed. But it doesn't have to be young teachers who are
let go - there are thousands of teachers retiring over the next
two years and more who would be eager to accept an early
retirement package. The teachers' pension fund, which is ex-
travagantly funded by the Ontario taxpayer, boasts a $1.8 bil-
lion surplus. By allowing teachers to retire when they reach
'factor 85' (age plus years of service), down from '90', funds
could easily be found for early retirement packages. Business
does it regularly — why can't the public sector?
The talkst tale being spun about Bill 160 is that it has
been done without public consultation. In addition to recent
public hearings, there have been some 22 studies done on
education in Ontario since the Second World War. There has
been mete public consultation on education than on any
other govianment-run ministry. In fact, the Tories took most
of thea atecor, mendations for Bill 160 from former NDP
lN1nisw orf Education Dave Cooke. Mr. Cooke has stated
quite ck quendy in recent weeks the need for education re-
form. It is quite telling to nose that the former education min-
ister for the NDP, long the party of the unions, has ackrhowl-
cdgod his own attempts to reform the education system
while in power were stonewalled by the teachers' unions.
What's the problem with Bill 1607 Nothing, except it
doesn't tit politically with the views of the teacher;' unions
who bm slollfirlly made thea to some Ontario parents.

♦ Letters to the editor
Standards too high
for politicians
To the editor:
I have often thought that I
would like to run for public of-
fice. The run would be fun, but
who would want the job? Your
editorial of Nov. 23 has con-
firmed that sentiment for me.
The facts of Councillor Rick
Johnson's misadventure depart-
ing a licensed establishment
with an alcoholic beverage have
been well covered in previous
editions of the News Advertiser,
yet your editorial would suggest
that the public was uninformed.
Obviously, the electorate of
Pickering Ward 3 made an edu-
cated statement in returning Mr.
Johnson by an almost 80 per
cent plurality.
My concern is that public of-
ficials and their families are
being measured by a standard
that even he media would have
a tough time living up to. Mr.
Johnson had the good sense to
appoint a designated driver, yet
that was given little considera-
tion in your editorial.
Municipal and regional
politicians put their records of
public service on the fine every
three years. How many of us
would be willing to expose our-
selves and our families, warts
and all, to that kind of public
scrutiny?
I have found Councillor
Johnson to be very supportive
when I have had the occasion to
call. I have made but one simple
request of Mr. Johnson — a
stop sign for the safety of my
children. It appeared in less
than two weeks, and for that I
am grateful.

Claremont

TO REACH US
Opinion Shagers
Got the itch to write?
Let us know
The News Advertiser is looking for people with
opinions to become Opinion Shapers.
If you've always wanted to write, now is your
chance. We're looking for 13 people to provide their
insights and experiences and share stories about
themselves and others in 1998. The News Advertis-
er is inviting unsung writers to send us a sample col-
umn from which we' I I choose the 13 best writers and
ask each one to produce a column four times a year
in 1998.
The columnists will choose their own topics but
local subjects are preferred. Column material will be
limited by the bounds of good taste, legal liability
and the role of community journalism.
Columns should be no more than 500 words. The
columns will be judged on the quality of the writing,
choice of topics and the writer's ability to make a
compelling point, describe a situation or draw a read-•
er into a story. Columns will be subject to the same
editing process given all material in the newspaper.
An attempt will be made to achieve a balance on the
Opinion Shapers panel so that many different per-
spectives will be represented.
Opinion Shapers are not paid for their columns,
but the experience can be rewarding in other ways.
It's an opportunity to become published and some
will find satisfaction in having a regular and promi-
nent forum in which to sound off.
So now's your chance. Please attach the accom-
panying form to the column you send in. The dead-
line for entries is Dec. 5. 1997.

team's leading scorer George Trifon,
who returned to the line-up after an in-
jury.
Panthers' starting goalie Kevin
Boyle was given the hook after allow-
ing the first seven goals of' the game.
Back-up netminder Joel Cameron en-
tered the fray in the second period.
Pickering coach Rod McGillis says
the Crunch's speed dominated the Pan -
P
thers as five of the visitors' first six
goals came on the transition with the
hosts slow to react.
"They're very good and they're fast.
They used their speed effectively and
they exploited our weaknesses. They
and Oshawa are the teams to beat in our
division. They are loaded with players
from last year."
The Panthers were outplayed in
every aspect of the game and were out -
shot 42-35.
The Pickering juniors currently
sport a league record of 7-10-5 for 19
points. The Panthers are in fourth place
in the Eastern Division standings, four
points behind third-place Wellington
Dukes.
They host the Quinte Hawks Sun-
day, Nov. 30 at 7:30 p.m.
PANTHERS' POSTSCRIPT: Pan-
thers' new defenceman Darren
Forbes, a late cut of the OHL's Wind-
sor Spitfires who joined Pickering last
week, suffered a knee injury in the
Syracuse game and will be lost to the
club for approximately two weeks ... Al-
though it's not confirmed, the Panthers
are confident Eric Thomson. who
played with Pickering last season, will
rejoin the club after leaving the OHL's
Ottawa 67s. "We're working out the
details and we should have him in the
line-up for Sunday;' says 11cGillis.
