The EQAO also tested a

Fire, emergency services
students in challenge
Five Durham College Fire and Emergency
Services students will be competing in a grueling
obstacle course at the world championship com-
bat challenge in Las Vegas from Nov. 7 to 9.
For team members Dan Boyer, Ben Blanche,
Nathan Hubbard, Huey Davidson and Steve
McWilliam. the obstacle course offers a true test
of the team's abilities and provides the future
firefighters with great work experience.
"The combat challenge is a true test of
strength and stamina," said Mr. Davidson. "We
are very excited to have the opportunity to com-
pete against top teams from around the world:'
During. an international competition in
Oneonta. New York on Oct. 5, the team placed
I Ith out of 25 teams. Their qualifying time was
just one minute slower than that of the world's
top ranked teams.
The obstacle course in Las Vegas requires
teams to wear full firefighting gear, carry a 50 -
pound hose up five flights of stairs, hit a 165 -
pound steel beam five feet with a mallet, pull a
275 -pound charged hose line 75 feet, and then
drag a 175 -pound dummy 100 feet to the finish
line.
Don Murdoch, the co-ordinator for Durham
College's Fire and Emergency Services program,
is excited for the team. "lite world champi-
onsMps will give valuable experience to the
Durham College students since it is a job-related
competition," he said. "h will also help promote
the college since TSN and ESPN will be cover-

seniors.
The chamber group of 14 string players was
founded in 1993 by Ruth Budd, who upon retir-

she still had an overflow of musical talent and
energy to give.
"For several years before retiring from the
bass section of the Toronto Symphony Orchestra.
I had been thinking about how impossible it
would be to live without making music;' Budd
says.
"Looking around at my colleagues, many of
whom, like me, would soon be leaving the
orchestra. I knew they too had lots of energy and
much still to sav with their instruments"
It also occurred to Budd there might be a
ready audience among seniors who loved listen-
ing to music, but who weren't enthusiastic about
going out at night, and being on fixed incomes
might be attracted by lower ticket prices.
"After discussion with many wonderful
friends who... agreed to form a board of directors.
