Grade 3 students at separate schools in Durham scored above the provincial standards in reading. writing and mathematics test- ing. The Education Quality and Accountability Office (EQAO) released the results of the province -wide Grade 3 English and mathematics and Grade 6 mathematics test results Friday. The tests, adminis- tered to students last spring, were designed to assess how well children had learned the English and mathe- matics portions of the Common Curri, ulum. The Province tested roughly 175,000 Grade 3 students during March and April 1997• including 98 per cent of the Durham Region Roman Catholic Sena - rate age School Board's g Grade 3 students. In r cent n( Durham 6 m students scored higher than a level two compared to 92 per cent across Ontario. In mathematics. 76 per cent of Durham stu- dents scored a level two or higher while the provincial average was 71 per cent. "It's nice to see our numbers are above average:' says Grant Andrews, director of the sepa- rate board He says the scores reflect the work of students, parents and teachers. But. Mr. Andrews says. "We want to do much better." He reports the board already has a number of initiatives in place to improve on the 1998 test scores and it's committed to .'working consistently" with students to better the results. The EQAO also tested a selective sampling of Grade 6 students in mathematics last spring. however Mr. Andrews says there were "too few (stu- dents) involved to give any kind of significant result" Benefit Friday for Pickering family left homeless by Oct. 16 blaze PICKERING — A benefit is and Natalie — were all out at the to 10 p.m. at the West but donations of household being held Friday. Those who pay for it should have a say on it. That's not being done" Mayor Parish noted the government didn't listen to its own advisers, such as David Crombie, who headed the Who Does What panel. Mr. Crombie recommended. among other things, the provincial government assume all social service costs. "It's important today, on the fifth day of an education strike involving the entire province of Ontario. (to consider) the fundamental difference between the teachers and the Province:' said Mayor Parish. "It's important to reflect on if the government had followed the recommendation of their adviser, Crombie, we wouldn't have an education strike and we'd be moving on with reform" Municipal leaders have asked the Province to "listen to us, rethink some of the things:' he added. "Quite frankly we don't think any listening is going on.- On n"On the education issue, Ms. Ecker said the system.
