A cather and early morning sleet to

a province -wide strike to
protest government educa-

"I'm prepared to fight;'
said John Wyatt, picket cap-

don't fight no one will"
Mr. Wyatt said teachers are pre-
pared to protest as long as they have
to to protect the province's education
system, adding if the Mike Harris
government does legislate teachers
back to work he isn't yet sure what
he would do.
Sarah Barrett, one of four picket
captains at Pickering High School in
Ajax, agreed while teachers would
rather be in the classrcxwm they're in
for the long haul.
"We don't get strike pay. We're all
donating our salaries to the

Little `debate' in Ward 2 regional forum
BY MARIANNE TAKACS
STAFF REPORTER
PICKERING — A debate between the
three candidates vying for the Ward 2
regional seat on Town Council was a rather
serene affair last week at the Pickering East
Shore Community Centre.
While their local counterparts had
exchanged barbs about who lived outside
their constituency and who had which polit-
ical connections, the regional candidates
t

focused on their own records and didn't dis-
agree on much.
Ralph Sutton pointed to his record of
community service on the local hospital
board and the fact local hydro rates have
decreased during his term on the Pickering
Hydro Commission.
He identified economic development,
waterfront development and the need for
more arenas, seniors' facilities and youth
programs as major issues facing the Town
of Pickering's residents.
"I'm a thinker and a doer. Working
together in partnership we can make Picker-
ing a better place to live, to work and to
play.,
Incumbent councillor Doug Dickerson
listed his achievements this term as includ-
ing setting up a citizens' task force on safe-
ty and his contribution to Town projects
such as reconstruction of the Liverpool

Durham Regional Police say
they've smashed a "professional bur-

Ajax and Pickering residents and two

A four-month investigation by 19

The thieves often used stolen vans

On Tuesday, detectives arrested
six suspects in the case, four of them
Ajax and Pickering residents and one
from Brooklin.
Combined, the six "at this point"
face two dozen charges in connection
with nine break-ins, though investi-

the origins of the stolen property,
police say.
"We've got a whole roomful of

All three candidates were also
against user fees for general

establishing "seamless" transit

In response to a question
about youth concerns and pro-

Ward 3 race in

PICKERING — Wayne Rowe is
seeking the Pickering Ward 3 Regional
councillor's seat in the Nov. 10 munic-
ipal election.
Mr. Rowe has lived in Pickering
just over four years and notes in a
media release announcing his candida-
cy that he became particularly interest-
ed in municipal politics in the summer
of 1996, during the controversy over
Town financial errors.
"I would like to see Council
become more fiscally responsible with
your tax dollars:" states Mr. Rowe.
"Blunders in the past, of losing track of
how your money is spent and invested,
should have never happened:'
The candidate says he will also
work to achieve improved and upgrad-
ed recycling efforts in Pickering and
all of Durham; the attraction of more
business and tourism into the town, so
Pickering can become "more than just
a bedroom community", more effec-
tive utilization of the Town's road

not resurfaced months before they are
to be- used by heavy construction
equipment; consideration of a youth
curfew to enhance the safety of young
people; and closer work with commu-
nity groups like Block Parents and oth-
ers to make Pickering a safer, friendlier
place to live.
Mr. Rowe is 35 and is currently
unemployed and attending re-training.
He notes he knows how difficult it can
be to pay bills and see taxes going up
again.
"I look forward to being your voice
in Pickering and Durham Region:" he
states.

been on Council for nine years. Maybe
it's time for a change"

Teachers rally the troops in Oshawa
BY SUSAN O'NEILL
STAFF REPORTER
Close to 4,000 Durham teach-
ers rounded out the first day of a
provincewide strike yesterday
afternoon with a rally at the
Oshawa Civic Auditorium to
demonstrate their opposition to the
government's education reforms.
Pat Jermey, Durham district
president of the Ontario Sec-
ondary School Teachers' Federa-
tion, congratulated teachers for
successfully shutting down every
school in the region. adding the
"public support is with us.
'"Today across our region we
joined together in solidarity," said
Tony White, Durham president of
the secondary division of the
Ontario English Catholic Teach-
ers' Association (OECTA). "We
are willing to fight for quality edu-
cation in this province."
Mr. White said teachers were
forced to strike because of a gov-
ernment bent on destroying the
education system, adding "it is
their intention to break and ulti-
mately divide our teachers' federa-
tions.
'"I'hey will fail," he said. "We
will no longer tolerate government
interference beyond its legitimate
scope in the education system."
Pickering parent Joanne Dies
received a standing ovation from
the boisterous crowd, telling
teachers "there are many parents

If passed into law, the legisla-
tion would allow the government
to set class size, cut teachers'
preparation time and place uncer-
tified instructors in classrooms.
Mike O'Connor, president of
the Durham elementary division
of OECTA, said teachers will not
allow the government to proceed
with its agenda, adding, "perhaps
a general strike might bring the
Province to its knees."
Maret Sadem-Thompson, pres-
ident of the Federation of Women
Teachers' Associations of Ontario
and the final speaker at yester-
day's rally, told the crowd she was
proud to stand with them in oppo-
sition to the government's legisla-
tion.
The Durham educator was one
of six federation leaders who met
with Education Minister Dave
Johnson last week and said calling
for a provincewide political
protest was a decision teachers
"wrestled" with.
Yet she said, "We have with us
an Ontario that believes in what
we're doing.
You have given me a sense of
courage ... a sense of pride.- she
said "We made our decision on
your behalf."
Durham Region teachers demonstrated against the Provincial gov-
ernment's proposed education reform bill at a rally in Oshawa
Monday afternoon. Union leaders congratulated teachers for suc-
cessfully shutting down all of the region's schools.
What our Pickering readers think...
The News Advertiser's InfoSourec hot-
line has been ringing off the hook since we
asked readers of the Sunday News Adver-
tiser to share their thoughts on the teachers'
strike. Here are a few we've received (and
the lines are still open on box 5108):
ODD
"1'd really like to know who supports
these people. They arc totally under -
worked, they don't even pm in 40 hours per
week, they have two months off in sum-
mers. They have all this time off and they

earn as much as every person who's putting
in 60 hours a week and getting two weeks
off a year. I have no sympathy for these
people- Who does:'
CIDO
"1 think the media has lost all perspec-
five on the teachers' walkout. They're not
doing it for themselves, they're doing it for
the children and that's who we all have to
care about — the chikdren."
❑OD
"1 support the teachers in their illegal
strike. They arc trying to protect the rights
of the students. I can understand the posF
tion of the people who do have chikbrn (as
I do) and I can understand it will be tough
on them, but teachers arc fighting for what
students meed in schools."
Day care centres set for onslaught
Day care providers in Pickering are
expecting busier days as area teachers
walked out of classrooms in a province -
wide strike that began Monday.
In a random sampling of area day care
centres by the News Advertiser, staff say
they had been receiving calls from parents
about watching their children since teach-
ers announced their intem to strike last
week.
Bayfair Daycare in Pickering is pre-
pared to take on additional duldren. And
most companies which provide day cane in
your home are willing to fast track their
registration process to help parents.
"We have had a few calls, but I think
most people are still hoping it's not going
to happen," Cardinal Nannies owner
Moyra Pudleiner says. She's prepared to
speed up the registration process "because
people are going to need help."
Wee Watch Private Home Day Care is
also anticipating increased demand in the
coming weeks, primarily for chikdren cur-
rendy requiring just part-time care. It will
also speed up the registration process.
though it will still be mindful of its strict
guidelines. The government has said it
will give parents $40 a day to cover day
cane expenses during the strike, but hasn't
yet provided details on how that money
will be distributed. While many older stu-
dents may earn extra money babysitting
during the strike, The Youth Centre at 360
Bayly St. in Ajax is offering a drop-in pro-
gram for Ajax and Pickering youth aged
13 to 19 years. The centre has an activity
room featuring Nintendo 64, music, ping-
pong, billiards, games and computer
games Students are also invited to drop by
to catch up on homework during the drop-

School support staff will report to work as
usual Monday morning, regardless of whether
teachers are on strike.
But whether the secretaries, custodians,

staff at both the public and Catholic school

Be informed to
get government
you deserve
Lord knows the teachers' strike has swamped all
other issues everywhere in Ontario at the moment
and parents have bigger fish to fry, but voters must
not allow the 1997 municipal election to fade away.
That would be easy to do and all the preaching in
the world won't change the numbers: less than half
of all eligible voters bother to go to the polls every
three years when mayors, councillors, trustees and
hydro commissioners put their names before the
public.
But this election is special and vital to the inter-
ests of all Ontarians. Because of changes to the way
Ontario is governed, local councils will be making
bigger and more important decisions than ever
before. And that means an informed electorate is
more important than ever.
Consider the following:
• downloading of provincial responsibilities and
shifts in property taxation will mean local councils
will have fewer dollars to work with. The pressure to
maintain tax freezes or to cut staff and costs will be
greater than it's been since the early 1990s. Your job
could be on the line.
• some councils have cut seats so that fewer coun-
cillors will be responsible for more decisions. This
makes scrutiny of each candidate's background,
record and promises paramount in making an
informed choice.
• more changes as dictated by the provincial gov-
ernment are likely in the next two to three years.
That means those elected on Nov. 10 will have to
implement changes while maintaining local services
at a high level. Again, the need to have the best peo-
ple in place is critical.
Voters do have a wide array of choices for coun-
cil and mayoralty seats in the election, which is less
than two weeks away. There are plenty of opportu-
nities to attend all -candidates forums, to peruse can-
didate literature, to call candidates or to visit the web
sites of some candidates. And, read the News
Advertiser for comprehensive campaign coverage.
The time to get knowledgeable is now and the
time to vote is Nov. 10. Don't be a spectator in this
,process; be a participant.

Strike threatens `profession'
-Io true editor
-
I would like to commend S.L.
Kowalski on her Oct. 8 letter to the edi-
tor headlined '1 am tired of teachers
holding me hostage'. It's true, the anger
over the teachers' illegal strike is esca.W- _
ing fast.I still remember when a teacher
was a person to be looked up to, a person
who taught right from wrong, and who
instilled in the young minds not only dis-
cipline, but pride of our Canadian her-
itage, and the value of being a good citi-
un. But that was a long time ago.
1 recently saw young students march-
ing, demanding a better deal for their
teachers. No need to guess who put them
up to that! Students should be taught to
think. If thrt were the case, they would
have bn able to see fix themselves that
what is going on right now is a mo vc to
minimize our national and provincial
debt — not to expand it.
Everyone of our young citizens is
already in debt to tens of thousands of
dollars, and if we don't get the debt
under control, this young generation will
not have anything.
But, to teach young people that if you
don't get what you want, then commit an
illegal act in order to get it, is so wrong
that it shames the entire profession — if
you can still call it a profession.

Who and where is our MP?
To the editor:
What happened to our federal repre-
sentation?
As a resident of Pickering Village
who was forced to vote for Whitby can-
didates in the last election, I was
annoyed.Change was not needed.
My former MP, Dari McTeague, con-
untues to represent his constituents and
does the job he was elected to do. But
where is the representative for the rest of
us?
Somewhere in Whitby resides a
Member of Parliament. She is supposed
to represent our interests, but it is doubt-
ful that 10 per cent of local residents
even know her name. We never see her,
or even hear of her. She does not repre-
sent Pickering Village residents.
Perhaps in the next federal election
we will get the representation we
deserve in the Village, as one of the old-
est communities in this province. It's
time Pickering Village residents got the
respect they deserve.

Putting moms
on hot seat
My heart sank as I read the headline in
a daily newspaper last week: "It's official:
Mom really does have a family favorite".
My thoughts turned to my childhood,
when I asked my mother which of her
children she loved the most. At the time.
I didn't think it could be too tough a ques-
tion. After all, my older brother coerced
me into saying my first bad word and my
younger sister once hinted broadly about
what gift I could expect from Santa
Still, Mom always had a standard
answer — she loved us equally and each
of us had qualities that made us special
and unique.
That answer and the way we were
treated must have satisfied me because I
never considered the subyect again until I
had my second child. That's when I real-
ized how silly the notion of loving one
child more than another really was and
apologized to my mother for asking a
question I hope I'll never have to answer.
And now this. A sociologist who
apparently thinks life isn't already chal-
lenging enough for mothers.
Fortunately, with my eldest at just
three; years, it's not likely my children
will hear about the study in the near
future. But will Alexandra or Brody one
day place it in front of me and demand
that I ' fess up"!
Should I start some sort of grading
system now'! I could give two points to
die first who slept through the night.
deduct two from the one who went
through the most diapers and allocate one
point each time someone brushes their
teeth without being asked. When they get
older, I could even give bonus points to
the one who asks me if there are any
chores around the house they can do — at
no charge.
Perhaps my children will come to me
awned with a points system of their own.
They'll present as evidence the number of
pictures in their photo albums, the items
in their closets and the hugs I've given
them over the years.
In the meantime, I'm keeping my eyes
open for a study on a father's love. And I
think I'll give my kids an extra big hug
tonight. Each of them.

positives in his team's overall play
against Huntsville, especially his
charges' strong defensive play.
"We held them to no five -on -
five goals for 60 minutes,” notes
McGillis. "This shows a commit-
ment to defence. We were tight
defensively and we we held them
to only 20 shots on net. There's so
many close games and so much
parity in the league that the ability
to maintain a one -goal lead is very
important. It wasn't that we sat
back and nursed the lead: we made
intelligent choices with the puck in
our own zone. The little things we
did made the difference."
Defenceman Doug Carr put the
Panthers on the board when his
slapshot from just outside the blue -
line handcuffed Huntsville netmin-
der Jeff Hope. The teams traded
goals in the second stanza. which
saw Pickering defenceman Matt
Jenkins score a powerplay marker
on a blast from the point.
The Panthers record improves
to 6-4-4 for 16 points. Pickering is
tied with the Oshawa Lcgionaires
for the overall lead in the league's
Eastern Division.
The Panthers host the Shelburne
Wolves (2-8-0, last in the Western
Division) at the complex on Friday
at 7:30 p.m. On Sunday, the
Panthers entertain division rival
Port Hope Buzzards (7-6-0, third
in the Eastern Division) at 7:30
p.m.
