The leaders of Ontario's teachers' unions met with Education and Training Minister John Snobelen Wednesday to discuss the Province's Quality Education Improvement Act. While neither side made concessions dur- ing the two-hour session, Maret Sadem- Thompson, president of the Federation of Women Teachers' Associations of Ontario and a Durham educator, says the meeting repre- sented the first step. L"7 No need to release 19 critical nuclear report: Hydro B)' MARIANM: TAKACS S VAFP RF.P W VER PICKERING —There was no new- information ewinformation in an extremely critical internal report on Ontario Hydro nuclear operations that was completed by last April but only calm to light when it was recently leaked to the media, according to Carl Andognini, head of the utility's nuclear division. Sonne politicians and orga- nizations such as Durham Nuclear Awareness have been critical of Hydro for keeping the report secret and have sug- gested the utility wanted to minimize negative publicity about nuclear operations at the time because it was applying for relicensing of the Pickering nuclear station in June. Mr. Andognini told Town Council Monday there was no need to release the report. which found nuclear operations at Hydro to be "below stan- dard" in seven of 1 I categories, satis- factory in two and "irxktcrmmate" in two. "it ckarly was a compilation of data that v%as already known to the public:' he said. He noted that in February. Hydro made a presentation to the Atomic Energy Control Board explain- ing the review of its operations for which the report was the first phase. He also said the AECB was given a verbal account of what was in the report. though the regulator was not presented the report itself. Hydro has since released the docu- ment. which was a preliminary report ckne tie the Independent. Integrated Performance Assessment (IIPA) released by the utility in :august. And, it boggles the mind every time we hear about parents who put their children's lives on the line when they pick up groceries at the local variety store. We were shocked once again earlier this week when police told us drivers in Durham flunked a provincewide seat -belt challenge for the second straight year. Volunteers at busy intersections throughout the region counted the number of passing motorists wear- ing seat -belts as part of Saturday's Operation Impact. The results released Monday reveal many local res- idents are still gambling with their money and, worse, their lives. Of 12,140 vehicles checked during the two-hour count, 10,562 drivers were buckled up. Those smart motorists understand the message often repeated by police that seat -belts save lives. But, the 87 per cent of Durham motorists found buckled up is well below the provincial compliance rate of 92 per cent. Whitby drivers are the best in the region as 91.1 per cent were discovered wearing seat- belts. Pickering motorists are the worst ass 83.4 per cent buckle up. In between those two extremes are Clarington drivers at 89.3 per cent, Ajax at 89.2 per cent and Oshawa at 84.1 per cent. What the statistics add up to is the fact that 13 per cent of Durham motorists — about one in seven — for some inexplicable reason don't bother to spend a cou- ple of seconds taking a precaution that could add years to their lives. Far less significant, they risk a fine of $90 and the loss of two demerit points. Those delinquent drivers might want to mend their ways in the next two weeks when Durham police con- duct a zero -tolerance enforcement campaign to follow up Operation Impact. All seat -belt violators will be targetted by police, who've witnessed the broken bod- ies of those who weren't buckled up in an accident. And, officers will be paving special attention to motorists who fail to ensure children are properly buckled up. As always, we urge all people to wear seat -belts. We also implore parents to ensure their children are always properly restrained. The life saved could belong to someone you love. Neil Simpson and Kevin McDonald, principal and teacher respectively, are dyed-in-the-wool belh•achers representative of the cur- rent teaching profession. I know Mr. Simpson. He is a ded- icated, hard-working erudite principal who ranks high among his academic ilk. Notwithstanding, he, like most teachers, fails miserably once again to "see the forest for the trees" and seems to altogether miss the point. Belt -tightening on years of over- spending is the premise for the gov- ernment's proposed overhaul of Ontario's education system. Running a province is a compli- cated chess game. Those at the helm of the Hams government are, for the most pan, highly -educated, astute ministers (including Joan Snobelen). They were elected to do a job (i.e., bring the deficit under control) and they're damn well doing it — and with more fortitude than any provin- cial power in recent Canadian history. With some cynicism, to be sure, Mr. Simpson has referred to the gov- ernment's tinkenngs with the educa- tion system as "lofty ideals". Does he imply "unattainable"? I haven't mad it, but the photo of a man's mid- section with a outline that states - "a waist mea- surcment of 39 inches is a signal to lose weight' is all I need, or want to read. I'm not sure if the deliverer of this release honestly didn't pay atten- tion to the message or was just trying to be funny. Being a cynical sort I'll assume the latter. I'm by no means fat, but I'd be lying if I said I didn't have a bit of a paurtch. At about 180oud~ pnand 5 feet 11 inches I don't need to sweat to the oldies, but I'd better find a recreational activity better suited to physical health then slo pitch. I don't want to keep on moving on up and eventually become a member of the 39ers club. For the majority of my 33 years on this earth have been skinny; well -fit I would say back then, but now going on a 36-imh waist I recall myself as being very thin, almost sickly. Years ago you could see my ribs, now I picture ribs smothered in txmtx-cue sauce and brown sugar. When 1 was in my tecnS, visits to my Italian relatives would be pressure -packed. After antipasto, three helpings of pasta and a refusal of a fourth, my aunt would ask, "What'? You no like'? You so skinny" Sheepishly I would take on another helping to put a stop to the guilt treatment, laid oas thick o as the neat sauce n my plate of pasta. Little did I know at the time they were recruit- ing me into the legion of the large. Back then my heroes were quarterbacks and hockey players. now 1 admire Teddy's and Fazio's. My mother warned me that I would put on weight, pointing out my father was thin like me until he reached his mid-20s. Those yeah came and went and still I had under five per cent body fat. I felt like I could do no wrong. I ate anything aril everything I wanted. I was getting cocky. But just as you think you're in the clear the inevitable always hits. It seems like each time 1 go shopping for pants I try on the size I think I am only to learn that I have to "upsize" After growling at the sales clerk for pushing inferior merchandise I grab a bigger size, try it on, and make the purchase. And City officials are hoping for a civil conclusion to their efforts to get airport users to move from the airport's south field to the new north field, which features a new S2.4 -million terminal. The City will issue notices to about 40 aircraft owners indicating they have to move to the north Held by Nov. 30, fulfilling a mandate first adopted in 1987 with council approval of the airport master plan, says Jeff Huntus, airport manager. Council's decision to force airport users to the north is "not unexpected:' says Dr. Gary Kindree, an airport user for the past 12 years. A compost pile can "cook" your dis- ease-free vegetable matter, changing it from grass clippings, straw and chopped leaves in to nutritious mulch. Building a compost pile can be fairly simple. First, find a place for your compost. Then drive four 5 -foot wood or metal stakes one foot into the ground. Fence in three sides with chicken wire - leaving one side open for easy access. If you'd rather, you can purchase a prefabricated compost unit. Your compost pile should be at least three feet in diameter and four feet high to build a hot internal temperature that gets it cooking.- Never ooking"Never use meat or bone - they attract flies and create odors. Also avoid adding diseased plants or lawn clippings that have recently been treated with herbicides or weedkillers. John Deere suggests waiting at least four mowings after the lawn's been treated before composting grass clippings. Build your compost pile in 5- to 10 -inch layers for best results. Sprinkle a 10-10-10 fertilizer - that's 10 parts each of nitrogen, phosphorous and potassium - on top of each layer and add a dusting of lime to pre- vent odor. Cover each layer with soil. To keep "cooking" at the right tempera- ture, your compost must remain moist, so leave a depression in the tip of the pile to catch rain. During dry spells, water your compost. And turn your compost regularly so that the drier outside portion is folded inside where the internal heat and microbial action can break it down. But, there are few times in a woman's life when she is more open to bonding than when she is expecting — or in the early years of nurturing — a child. At that time, the differences in social standing, education and ou'side interests that often keep people politely detached fade as the common link, motherhood, provides for a shared perspective and eager conversation. When Bonnie Annis discovered she was pregnant in August of 1996, she went surf- ing the Internet for information. What she got were two hundred new friends from as far away as Israel, Sweden and the United States and as close to home as North York, all expecting babies the same month as her, April, 1997. At first the conversations focused on morning sickness, recalls Mrs. Annis. But, as time went on the subject 'de jour' changed to meet the shared circumstances of the women. Home birth versus hospital, midwife vs. doctor, circumcision vs. not, complications, the breast-feeding debate, all played out in e-mailed messages between group members. Birth announcements began to trickle in as early as December when baby Krissa, the earliest preemie, was horn weighing less than a kilogram and fighting for her life. As more babies came into the world (most, thankfully, healthy and close to schedule) the topics changed again to other subjects dear to a new mother's heart, such as diaper rash, umbilical cords, sore breasts and, of course, normal infant behavior. There are the romantic; poems about the whole experience and there is the whimsi- cal; "stupid baby tricks" (breastmilk sprayed through the nose). But more important than the answers they give each other, even more essential than that remedy for colic that actually works, is the camaraderie, the opportunity for expression to an audience that really is interested in the minute details of caring for a newborn. The Ajax school was recently des- ignated an Emerald Green School by the SEEDS Canada Foundation for completing and recording 500 envi- ronmental action projects as part of a national program called Learners in Action. Deanna Fry, a teacher who co-ordi- nates the school's two green groups, -�M says the students are heavily involved in logging environmental projects. ""The students record any environ- mental action they do, such as collect- ing signs of fall on a walk" With just over 200 Emerald Green Schools across the country, Lakeside is the first in the region to achieve the 500 mark. Ms. Fry says the goal is to complete another 500 projects and become an Earth School by the year 2000. Dan Stoker of the Alberta -based SEEDS Canada Foundation says achieving the status of an Emerald school "is not always easy and not all schools make it. "The kids do a lot of work and it means a lot. Some of them get very emotional... they own this" He says the Learners in Action pro- gram encourages students to partici- pate in projects that enhance the envi- ronment. Schools receive recognition for their efforts as they proceed through the program. Schools become a Green School when they have completed and recorded 100 projects, a Jade School at 250 projects, an Emerald School at 500 projects and an Earth School at 1,000 projects. Mr. Stoker says "one third of the elementary schools in Canada are involved in the program" which was started in Alberta in 1990. Of the 4,700 schools registered, 1,700 are Green Schools. Fourteen schools in Durham are involved in the program. Three have achieved Jade School status and seven are designated Green Schools. The goal finished a four -point night for Hunter, who also contributed three assists. The Panthers defeated the Legionaires 5-4 in overtime at the Pickering Recreation Complex Sept. 26 in the teams' first meeting of the regular .saSon. Tuesday's victory put the Panthers hack in first place in the league's Eastern Division, one point ahead of the Legionaires. Tie Panthers' record improves to 5-2-3 for 13 points.
