protesters
Protests against proposed educa-
tion reforms were staged at the grass-
roots level here Wednesday and
Thursday as hundreds of high school
students hit the streets to voice their
concerns.
Students from most Ajax and Pick-
ering high schools protested clauses of
proposed Bill 160 that would increase
class sizes, cut teacher preparation
time and lengthen the school year. The
teens walked out of classes and
marched along busy streets in highly
visible protests that saw them roam
from school to school, rally in front of
both Town halls and descend on the
constituency office of Durham West
MPP and Minister of Community and
Social Services Janet Ecker.
"Teachers aren't going to want to
coach extra -curricular activities if
they lose their preparation time;' St.
'Nary Catholic Secondary School stu-
dent Joe Daiello, 15, said Thursday
outside -the office of Ms. Ecker, who
was at Queen's Park.
Students who visited her office
were given information about Bill
160, as well as an official petition
form. They were invited to put togeth-
er a delegation of representatives from
area high schools to meet with Ms.
Ecker next week.
Pupils at Archbishop Denis O'Con-
nor Catholic High School in Ajax
began the local round of mass walk-
outs after noon Wednesday with a
rally in their football field.
Walkout organizer Brian Mellon
was greeted with cheers and applause
as he urged fellow students to protest
the government's plans to increase
class sizes and lengthen the school
year.
"We don't want to go to school for
an extra two weeks"
The protest picked up steam that
afternoon when DO'C students
marched to Ajax High School and
Exeter High School.
"A lot of teachers are happy we're
doing this;" Ajax High student Dave

Give needy
a reason to
be thankful
Good news regarding Canada's economic status is
easy to come by these days.
The nation's economy is growing at an annualized
rate nearing five per cent, interest rates are at or near
historic lows, jobs are being created at a pace not
seen in seven years, welfare caseloads in Ontario
continue to decline, and victory has been declared in
the war against the national deficit.
Suddenly. we are on the brink of better times. But
to many people in the community — too many peb-
ple in the community — the consequence of all that
good news has provided nothing tangible.
Enter the Salvation Army, St. Paul's -on -the -Hill
Food Bank and the Optimist Club of Oshawa.
All three are busy once again this fall season try-
ing to fill the shelves at community food banks to
feed the needy right here at home.
And the demand still exists. There are single
mothers who don't have much left at the end of the
month to provide a healthy and nutritious diet for
their children. There are job -seeking men whose
unemployment insurance benefits have run out.
There are couples with children who, when the
mortgage or rent and utility bills are paid, have little
extra.
They are the people you can help this
Thanksgiving season. They are your neighbors, your
friends, perhaps your family members. They are the
people who frequent your community food bank.
They are not homeless. They are not drug abusers.
They are not criminals.
They're normal people like you who have fallen
on hard times, however temporary, and who need a
hand up.
When you're shopping for groceries the next few
days, give a thought to these people who will bene-
fit, and be thankful, for your generosity.
It is the season to give thanks for the bounty many
of us enjoy.
While your giving thanks in your family, give a
thought to others and donate to the food drives cur-
rently under way in your community.
They'll thank you for it.

Make casino an election issue
To the editor:
The question of whether or not
Ajax should allow a casino to locate
here and whether that issue should be
the subject of a referendum on the
November ballot offers the opportu-
nity for democratic debate to take a
large role in the election.
Casino gambling with gaming
tables and the highly controversial
video lottery terminals may have a
profound impact on our community,
and the issue must be thoroughly
aired in the November electoral
process.
Candidates for council must be
forthcoming about their positions on
casino gambling and we must not let

assured it's safe.

them obscure their intentions by hid-
ing behind tired diversions such as
"not enough information"_ This issue
has been studied ad nauseum in other
jurisdictions and there is a plethora
of information on its benefits and
drawbacks.
Regional Councillor Roger
Anderson's long list of reasons to
dclav discussion of casino gambling
sounds like a weak attempt to back -
burner this issue until the election is
coneniently out of the way.
Casino gambling in Ajax must be
an issue in this campaign. Let Mayor
Steve Parish, Regional Councillor
Anderson and the candidates for
council state their positions and
defend them in the public forum of
our municipal election.

Teachers, Tories
look poised for
schoolyard brawl
The Ontario premier's invitation to meet
with teachers' unions to discuss education
reform and the Tories' recent concession o)
labor's demands are not necessarily indica-
tions the government will cave in to leachers'
protests.
The government's decision not to play
hardball with public: sector workers cannot be
interpreted as proof the Tories will back
down when faced with the threat of a
province -wide teachers' strike.
Sid Ryan, Ontario division president of
the Canadian Union of Public Employees,
claims the Province's amendments to Bill
136 are a direct result of strike mandates
adopted in an attempt to sideswipe the legis-
lation, which would have suspended work-
ers' right to strike.
"Tins proves that ordinary people can win
if they fight back;' Mr. Ryan said in a recent
news release.
Yet education reform is one of the staples
of the Province's Common Sense Revolution
and Premier Mike Harris told reporters
Tuesday that unions do not set policy in
Ontario and the government's bottom line on
fixing the education system is not negotiable.
While Education and Training Minister
John Snobelen flip-flopped last week on his
announcement that students would return to
school the week before Labour Day. he Rxt
has stated the government is standing ground
on reforms he says will deliver a quality edu-
cation system at a lower cont.
Ontario's teachers' unions have adopted a
strike mandate, just as the province's lafxtr
unions did, and say there'll be province -wide
action before the legislation pasties into law if
it's unchanged.
While teachers' union leaden have said
the government's amendments to the pro, in-
cial labor legislation are a positive sign,
opposition critics claim the premier is nar-
rowing his focus and has handpicked teach-
ers as the target group to show he's running
Ontario.
The Tories' creation of a mega -city to the
west and the closure of hospitals throughout
Metro Toronto are proof enough the govern-
ment can stay the course in the face of

Trucker safe, but million -dollar cargo''
still missing: Police
PICKERING — Police continue
to investigate the theft of $I million in
computer equipment from a truck
whose driver says he was kidnapped at
gunpoint before his hijacked rig was
found abandoned and empty in Pick-
ering Tuesday morning.
Land Air Express of Canada Ltd.
driver Stephen Salicksingh has told
Peel Regional Police leading the
investigation that he was accosted by a
gunman and two others after pulling
into his trucking firm's depot on Dor-
man Road in Mississauga around 3
a.m. Tuesday.
The 32 -year-old Scarborough resi-
dent reported he was abducted and
taken to an unknown location in
Toronto before being released in the
Scarborough area at approximately 10
p.m. when he called police from a
doughnut shop.
Mr. Salicksingh, who suffered
minor scratches, bumps and bruises.
was turned over by Metro cops to
Durham Regional Police who, in turn,
handed him to Peel police.
That force's Criminal Investigation
Bureau has interviewed him and will
talk to him again.
Mr. Salicksingh's rig. leased from
Penske Truck Rentals. was found with
its driver -side window broken and the
trailer empty by Durham police called
around 9:45 a.m. Tuesday about an
abandoned vehicle on Sandy Beach
Road near Bayly Street.
Durham police were still talking
Thursday to people in the area who
may have seen a man get out of the
truck and into a blue vehicle, possibly
a Volkswagen Jetta.
`Highway Help'
aids motorists
Being stranded on a dark highway
can be a frightening experience for
any motorist. But, thanks to the
'Highway Help' program, at least
200,000 Ontario drivers now have
some peace of mind.
As part of the province -wide pro-
gram launched by the Ontario Asso-
ciation of Chiefs of Police last year,
motorists are encouraged to place
bright -red 'Call Police' signs on
their windows to safely alert passing
drivers assistance is needed.
To celebrate the success of the
program, signs and appreciation
plaques were presented to local and
provincial sponsors at Durham
Regional Police headquarters
Wednesday.
"When you are stopped on the
highway you can be seen as a vul-
nerable target to people who don't
have good intentions. These signs
send the message police are on the
way," said Deputy Chief Jim Adams.

New online service
offers computer
train reservation
Plan your rail
excursion from
your home computer
Train travel is easier than ever
now that travellers need go no fur-
ther than their personal computer to
reserve a seat with VIA Rail Canada.
Once reserved, tickets can be
picked up at VIA stations or autho-
rizcd travel agencies or may be
charged and sent directly by mail.
The new on-line reservation system,
VIA Rcsernet Interactive, was
launched recently in 'Montreal's Cen-
tral Station and Toronto's Eaton Cen-
tre.
VIA is the first railway in the
world, as well as the first passenger
carrier in Canada, to give customers
the option of using the internet to
interface with the company's reser-
vation system.
VIA also used the launch to unveil
its second -generation website which
has the same address as its predeces-
sor: http://www.viarail.ca.
The original site, an innovation
when it was launched in 1995, gave
visitors access to schedules and
fares. It had become so popular that
in January alone, jt received 19,000
visitors and recorded more than
6(x).000 hits. The site has now been
revised and redesigned in terms of
both graphics and content.

There's a special kind of person who would enjoy Purgato-
ry. And it's the sank kind of person who would like the
Himalayas, and Calamity Corner. The Giant's Grave would
please as well, but Big Bertha might raise a frown.
All of these places are clustered in one tight little wind-
blown part of Northern Ireland, at the famous Royal Ponrush
Golf Club on Ulster's glorious Causeway Coast.
Big Bertha is a formidable bunker and among the other col-
orfully named holes. Calamity Corner is a tantalizing par
three.
At Newcastle. prestigious Royal County Down Golf Club
holds eighth ranking in world importance, and Its 13th hole is
the most copied by global golf course architects. There are 78
other satisfying Northern Ireland courses. but none has had a
better return on investment than the links of Royal County
Down. It was laid down in 1989 for a sum "not to exceed four
pounds" by four -time golf champion Tom Morris of St.
Andrews, who was, at that time, in his 60s.
If you're a first time visitor to Ulster you are in for a scenic
surprise, particularly around the popular Antrim Causeway
Coast.
There are eye -appealing coastal resorts; the storied Dun-
luce Castle, quiet fishing villages, cosy orange, pantiled
roofed homes; dramatic shoreline cliffs; secluded silvery
beaches; and bonny glens with snug whitewashed, black -slate -
roofed cottages, each with a stubby terra cotta chimney, send-
ing a curling peat smoke signal.
Along the coast at picturesque little Portbraddan, there's an
oddity to see. It's the smallest church in Ireland. The slate
roofed sanctuary measures a mere 3.65 -by -2 metres.
Something a bit more adventurous awaits the well co-ordinat-
ed, steely nerved types who sally across the Carrick -a -Rede
rope bridge. It spans an 24 -metre coastal chasm.
The Ulster Folk and Transport Museum, at Cultra in Coun-
ty Down, offers a great opportunity to see homes, pubs, trains,
period costumes and customs all in one big outdoor museum.
The authentic artifacts are spread over 60 acres, and there is
something of interest for everyone.
More soothing and sedate, the Gardens and House at Mount
Steward are sure to please. The fragrant and well -laid -out Gar-
dens are number six on the Great British Gardens list. Don't
miss the classical -garden sanctuary made locally and designed
to amuse the children.
There are dinosaurs, platypuses, dodos and other creatures,
including a cheetah named Charlie.

Keep pesky qthosesquirrels
away from your bulbs
Tulip bulbs happen to he one of the
squirrel's favorite foods. I don't like them
digging my bulbs up any more than the next
guy. but I draw the line at torture.
Increasingly garden centres arc recom-
mending we resort to the cayenne pepper
method of deterring the little pests. Picture
a squirrel cleaning its paws and face. It licks
its paw then runs it in a line From its ear
down over its eye to under its mouth... much
like your pet cat would. If either its paw or
mouth has cayenne pepper on it, most like-
ly it will end up in the animal's eye. Anyone
who has ever had the misfortune of putting
a finger to an eye after handling a hot pep-
per knows the excruciating pain that fol-
lows.
There are many documented cases of
cayenne pepper causing squirrels to scratch
out their own eyes in order to get rid of the
burning sensation!
I, for one, do not want to be responsible
for that.
The Netherlands Flowerbulb Informa-
tion Centre recommends four tried and test-
ed methods for keeping the little brats away
from bulbs, without causing dramatic
injury.
You can try one or all of them.
• Before planting your tulip bulbs in the fall
ask your barber or hairdresser for some
human hair from floor sweepings. Place
some hair right in the hole with your tulip
hulks. Squirrels don't appreciate human
smells, so this is almost guaranteed to keep
them from snacking on the bulbs. Also mix
some of the hair into the soil you cover the
bulbs with after planting.
• ll'you have a large bed of tulips, after plac-
ing the bulbs at the right depth (two or three
times as deep as the bulb is high). add
enough soil to just barely cover the bulbs.
Cover the bulbs with a piece of chicken wire
large enough to cover the bed, and then fin-
ish filling in with soil.
The squirrels can't lilt the soil and some-
how the tulips manage to push their way
through in the spring.
• The stems, leaves, flowers and bulbs of
narcissus are Poisonous and will cause a
g0x0d bout of tummy upset if ingested.
Squirrels, not being stupid, know this. If
you interplant your tulips, the squirrels will
be less likely to be interested.
• Place a little bit of dirt from your vacuum
cleaner in the bottom of the hole. Place the
bulb on top and some more "vacuum clean-
er dirt" on top and cover with soil as usual.
Again, the human smell repels the Pesky
rtxlents.
Alternatively, as is done by the chief gar-
dener in the White House, open -topped
boxes are nailed to tree trunks just out of
human reach, and are regularly replenished
with peanuts.
Making an effort to feed the squirrels
keeps them out of the flower beds.
Whatever you decide to do, think about
the consequences. No living thing should be
tortured for any reason.

Oliver Stone turns talents to film noire in U=Turn
Now playing at Moviplex 9, Pickering
Air Force One: Harrison Ford, Glenn
Close. A thriller with Harrison Ford as the
U.S. president who's kidnapped aboard an
airplane.
The Edge: Anthony Hopkins, Alec Bald-
win. David Mamet's screenplay for The
Edge presents a harrowing tale of two very
different men -- one an intellectual billion-
aire (Hopkins), the other a hotshot fashion
photographer (Baldwin) — whose hidden
tensions are unleashed when they engage in
a desperate struggle for survival in the hos-
tile Alaskan wilderness.
Excess Baggage: Alicia Silverstone. A
spoiled little rich girl plans her own kidnap-
ping to gain attention from her rich daddy.
However, her little plan goes terribly awry.
The Game: Michael Douglas, Sean
Penn. There are no rules in The Game. And
that will make life very difficult for Nicholas
Van Orton (Michael Douglas), a shrewdly
successful businessman who is always in
control.
G.I. Jane: Demi Mooreturns in her birth-
day suit (remember Striptease?) for khaki
and a buzz cut in this drama about a
woman's pursuit of respect in a military set-
ting.
In and Out: Kevin Kline. Joan Cusack.
Howard Brackett's (Kline) high school stu-
dents are astonished. One of his former stu-
dents (Matt Dillon) has become a Holly-
wood superstar and clumsily calls Howard's
sexuality into question — on the Academy
Awards telecast no less. Instantly Howard's
tranquil life in Greenleaf. Indiana has turned
upside down. Is it really true that the stu-
dents' favorite
teacher might be
gay .'
Diss the
Girls: !Morgan
Freeman, Ashley
Judd. This psy-
chological sus-
pense thriller
stars Freeman as
Alex Cross, a
Washington,
D.C. police
detective and
psychologist
searching for his niece who has disappeared
from college in North Carolina. Judd stars as
Kate McTiernan, a strong-willed and deter-
mined young doctor who has information
vital to Cross's unravelling of the mystery.
Men in Black: Tommy Lee Jones and
Wil Smith arc our best. last and pnly line of
defence in protecting the earth from the
scum of the universe.
The Peacemaker: George Clooney,
Nicole Kidman. In a remote section of Rus-
sia, two trains are on a collision course. One
carries passengers, the other nuclear
weapons en route to be deactivated in accor-
dance with the START nuclear disarmament
treaty. Dr. Julia Kelly (Kidman), a nuclear
scientist and acting head of the White House
Nuclear Smuggling Group, is the first to
realize this catastrophe was no accident and
most likely the work of terrorists. But it is
Lieutenant Colonel Thomas Devoe
(Clooney), an intelligence officer with the
U.S. Army's Special Forces, who counters it
was actually part of a conspiracy to cover up
the piracy of the train's nuclear cargo by
profiteers. They are both right.
L' -Turn: Sean Penn, Jennifer Lopez.
Nick Nolte. This Oliver Stone film follows
hard -luck gambler Bobby Cooper (Penn)
who unwittingly ends up in Superior, Ari-
zona which on the outside
appears relatively normal, but on
the inside is bizarre and trcacher-
ous. There. Bobby meets Grace
McKenna (Lopez) and Jake
(Nolte), who suck Bobby into a
deadly game of lust, madness
and money.
