Animals can get
a Second Chance
in Pickering
BY MARIANNE TAKACS
STAFF REPORTER
PICKERING — The Second Chance Wildlife Sanctu-
ary being established here to help
injured and homeless animals is in need
of some help itself.
Launched in February with great
fanfare after the donation of a site in
north Pickering by ClubLink Properties
Ltd., the sanctuary is being built by
volunteers.
But it has received insufficient dona-
tions to be able to open this year as
originally planned. The goal now is to
have the sanctuary operating by next DOUG

`It was a very

"It looked like a
twister or tornado'
BY SUSAN O'NEILL
STAFF REPORTER
Hundreds of area residents spent
several hours in darkness Saturday
night as heavy rains and high winds
damaged buildings, downed hydro
wires and uprooted trees in Ajax and
Pickering.
"It was a very violent storm," says
John Wiersma, general manager of
Pickering Hydro. "It almost looked
like a twister or tornado pulled
through here"
Mr. Wiersma reports the storm
caused "severe" damage in certain
spots. For example, winds uprooted
a 60 -foot tree that fell across power
lines on Glendale Drive in Pickering.
"About 200 customers in the
Glendale subdivision were affected,"
he says. Power was restored to all
but 30 customers by 10 p.m. that
evening.
Mr. Wiersma says residents in the
Bay Ridges and West Shore areas
were also left in the dark due to wind
damage to hydro lines near the Pick-
ering GO train station.
Andy Skilling, customer services
supervisor for Ajax Hydro, says
there were "numerous outages"
throughout the central and western
areas of town Saturday night.
He says most power failures,
which ranged from a few moments to
several hours in duration, were "due
to trees contacting the lines"
While the storm kept area hydro
utilities, local fire departments were
also flooded with calls.
Pickering Fire Department deputy
chief Bill Douglas says firefighters
responded to 18 calls between 6:21
p.m. and 8:51 p.m. Saturday.
He says calls included reports of
fallen trees and hydro wires, a per-
son trapped in an elevator at a

and a commercial building on Dillingham

"They were pretty busy," says Mr. Douglas,
who adds none of the calls were out of the
ordinary given the nature of the storm.
"We had a lot of calls," says Ajax Fire Chief
Randy Wilson. "It was mostly little stuff...but
a lot of little stuff."
As in Pickering, he says most callers in
Ajax reported downed power lines and fallen
trees. But, there were no fires as a result of the
storm.
Andrea Keller, marketing director at the
Pickering Town Centre, says the "severe rain
and wind" damaged an aluminum

Ms. Smith estimates
she gets about 110 calls a

When
she started
making
her plans for a sanctuary
known in the community,
ClubLink came forward
with a five-year lease on a
vacant house, stables and
land on Seventh Conces-
sion Road next to its
Cherry Downs Golf and
Country Club.
The plan is for Ms.
Smith to live in the house
and run the sanctuary,
aided by volunteers and
co-op students.
It's expected there will
be visiting hours for the
public and special pro-
grams for school children.
Rental of extra stable
space may create some
income for the sanctuary.
Others have come for-
ward with donations as
well.

floors crumbling every-
where.
As well, little work can
be done inside the house
until a new roof is put on.
Altogether, Ms. Smith
and Ward 2 Regional
Councillor Doug Dicker-
son, who has been helping
her get Second Chance
established, estimate at
least $20,000 in materials
and/or cash donations is
needed to complete
enough work to allow the
sanctuary to open. Volun-
teers are also needed to
help finish the sanctuary
and operate it.
One stumbling block
for donors, according to
Ms. Smith, has been the
five-year lease on the site
which has some people
worried the sanctuary will
have to close when the
lease is up.
But both she and Coun.
Dickerson are confident
Second Chance will be a
permanent facility.
"Five-year leases are
normal terms for compa-
nies to sign," says Coun.
Dickerson.
"I think ClubLink has a
long-term commitment
here. Every indication is
to us the lease will be
renewed at the end of the
five years and after that
five years there will be
another five years."
Second Chance will
welcome all kinds of
donations in addition to
cash.
The sanctuary already
has an old stretcher from a
home for the aged in
Whitby which will be put
to good use, recycled toi-
lets from Durham Region,
and a promise of some
used equipment from a
local veterinarian.
Charitable tax receipts
can be provided to donors.
Anyone who'd like to

which houses a cooling system.
She says "the wind got down inside" the
structure, damaging the five -by -114 -foot alu-
minum panel at approximately 6:30 p.m.
Ms. Kelter says the panel was not blown
across the roof but remained attached to the
tower at its base. It was to be reattached Mon-
day, she says.
Durham Regional Police Sergeant Jim
Grimley told the News Advertiser he was not
advised of any problems in the area other than
the incident at the Pickering Town Centre.
Environment Canada officials could not be
reached for comment to confirm if the storm
included a tornado, further to reports of sight-
ings of funnel clouds in the area.

Off the buses
Durham public board says `No' to
busing Whitby neighborhood students
BY CHRISTY CHASE
DURHAM STAFF
WHITBY - A request by Harri-
son Court parents to have their chil-
dren continue to ride a bus to school
has been turned down by the
Durham Board of Education.
The transportation department
denied the request since there is "a
safe, logical route through the neigh-
borhood" that's under the 1.6 -kilo-
metre limit for busing, says board
communications director Mary
Brown.
"It has sidewalks all the way and
there appear to be no safety issues,"
she says, adding the decision was
made early Friday afternoon.
"I definitely don't agree with
them," says Terry Scbu, one of sev-
eral parents upset their children can
no longer ride the bus to Leslie
McFarlane Public School.
"We measured the most direct
route to the school ... and it was over
the 1.6 -limit they gave. I'm still
going to be putting the kids on the
bus until they maybe physically
remove them."
On Thursday morning, board staff
and parents measured two routes to
the school from the subdivision just
south of Manning Road and east of
Brock Street. The route preferred by
parents, using three streets, includ-
ing two main streets was just over
the 1.6 -kilometre limit.
The other, suggested by the board
and using mostly sidestreets through
the subdivision, was under the limit.
A recent change in board policy calls
for children living less than 1.6 kilo-
metres from a school to walk. Those
over that distance are bused.
Last year, the children were bused
to school due to major construction
on Garden Street at the CP Rail
tracks.
But this year, the parents were
told the children would have to
walk.
Mr. Sebu says the bus "stops
almost on my doorstep and is going
to school half full." He said the
walk, about 30 minutes long, is too
far for younger children and will
probably take closer to 45 minutes in
the winter.
He adds the parents' route has a
crossing guard at Bradley Drive and
Garden Street to help children cross
Bradley.
Ms. Brown says there is also a
crossing guard at Garden and Kilber-
ry Drive, where the children would
exit onto Garden using the board's
preferred route. She adds the guards
are there primarily to help children
cross Garden.
She adds she was unaware the
parents had been putting their chil-
dren onto the bus.
Mr. Sebu says the driver has been
taking down the children's names
and addresses.

CLARINGTON -- When Rachel
Arsenault heads south this winter, it
won't be for a relaxing dream vaca-
tion of lying on the beach and play-
ing in the surf.
In January the 20 -year-old Cour-
lice resident is heading to South
America to work in Guyana for 10
weeks doing health surveys, devel-
oping national parks, and renovat-
ing schools and community build-
ings.
"I'm really interested in other
countries, other cultures," she says.
"Countries that are less fortunate
than us I really want to help out."
Ms. Arsenault is one of 30 Cana-
dians travelling to Guyana with
Youth Challenge International
(YCI), an organization which
encourages youth and global devel-
opment.
"I looked into a lot of groups like
this and this was the only one that
dealt with development issues and I
was interested in that because I'm
thinking about going to school for
(international) development," says
the Port Perry High School gradu-
ate.
Although YCI also has projects
in Costa Rica, Ms. Arsenault chose
Guyana to learn about a new coun-
try.
"I guess because I didn't know
anything about Guyana and I saw a
slide show about it and it looked so
beautiful," she said.
As part of her preparation for the
trip, which also includes an outdoor
selection weekend involving chal-
lenges like problem -solving, Ms.
Arsenault must fund -raise $3,750 to
help cover costs incurred for the
trip.
Raising the money through fund-
raising is preferred by YCI because
"it's for public awareness. It's like
my community helping other com-
munities in need," she says.

nault is holding a car wash on Satur-
day, Sept. 13 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m
at the Trinity Pentecostal Church at
900 King St. E. in Oshawa.

Someone's doing
something right
The numbers don't lie.
The unemployment rate has dipped to 8.9 per cent in
Canada, to 8.4 per cent in Ontario and down to 7.8 per
cent in the Oshawa region (including Oshawa, Whitby
and Clarington). Ajax -Pickering and Port Peng numbers
are not available, but are considered 'close' to the
Oshawa rates.
The Oshawa region's unemployment rate was 10.1
per cent last August, so the drop in unemployment in one
year is an astonishing 20 per cent.
At the same time, since July of 1995, there has been a
drop of 16 per cent in provincial welfare nates. In addi-
tion, the Province has dropped personal income tax rates
by 15 per cent with the intention of further dropping rates
another 15 per cent over the next two years.
Contrary to the threats of some doomsayers, federal
cuts of civil servants have not increased national unem-
ployment, slashing of federal transfer payments to
provinces have not resulted in rising provincial deficits
(or taxes), and now municipalities will find creative ways
to cut costs without increasing taxes. What's not to like.'
All of this has been accomplished with more people
working now since the high -flying 80%.
Governments of course, don't deserve all the credit
for these great numbers: they never do, just as they don't
deserve all the blame when times are bad. Conditions of
supply and demand, and economic activity around the
world —especially in the United States — have a profound
influence on the Canadian economy. Nonetheless, gov-
ernments at all levels are to be thanked for helping to cre-
ate a solid business climate. We all benefit in many ways:
more people working means fewer on welfare or
employment insurance and means more tax dollars col-
lected to help fight the deficit and keep the prospect of
tax increases at bay.
The biggest change over the past few years has been
the election of the Tories in Ontario. Their policies have
helped to make Ontario business -friendly creating a
good bottom line for us all. It's all there in black and
white.

"I thought it was an excellent editorial in that it really point-
ed out that her death was due to drunk driving. It's not
diverting from the real issue. It wasn't really the paparazzi
or anybody else who killed her. It was a drunk driver. I
think the world has to pay more attention to the dangers of
drunk driving."

v Letters to the editor
The kids are
all right
To the editor:
May I bring to your attention and
that of your readers a poignant scene
that transpired here just prior to the
Labor Day weekend'?
It occurred in the shopping plaza at
the south end of Harwood Avenue just
across from the Ajax police station. On
Friday, Aug. 29 I was attracted to an
area where about 50 teenagers stood
around in somber silence so different
from their general animated state.
On the sidewalk sat a couple of
boys in adult bodies silently holding
bunches of flowers. In front of them
was a message chalked on the side-
walk, one that these aging eyes could
not discern.
As I watched in wonder, an elderly
couple shuffled toward the crowd,
intent on entering one of the premises.
The crowd respectfully opened up and
let them through.
An hour later I returned to the
scene, having completed my grocery
shopping. The crowd was the same but
the faces had changed. A policeman
came from across the road to investi-
gate and left without altering the situa-
tion. On the adjacent curb sat a group
of kids, some with head in hand, others
sobbing softly, still others in stoic
silence.
I learned the story from a lad there.
One of their friends had passed away
in tragic circumstances and these boys
and girls were here, their old meeting
place, to pay their last respects. As I
listened to these words, my eyes
caught other young people expressing
their affection for the departed in chalk
and crayon on the sidewalk.
The previous day in another Ajax
shopping centre I had witnessed a
child throwing a tantrum in an effort to
get what she wanted and I heard a
voice say, "There is the future genera-
tion." At the time I mentally agreed but
now my fears for the future are wiped
away.
In the ever-changing group at the
impromptu memorial service, I saw
our future: realistic, thoughtful, caring.
These kids will grow up too soon but
our future is safe in their hands.

Follow Di's lead
as a living tribute
Since the death of Princess Diana, not
a day has gone by that I haven't talked to
at least a few people about the tragedy.
Conversations have touched on the role
of the paparazzi in her death, young sons
left without a mother, drunk driving and
tabloid newspapers.
Many people have told me they hope
some good comes from her death. While
I've never been overly interested in the
goings-on of the Royal Family, I was cer-
tainly touched by news of Diana's death
and I, too, hope it was not in vain.
Some are demanding laws to protect
those in the; public eye from the intense
scrutiny the popular princess suffered.
For others, it would mean supermarket
tabloids that profit from the invasion of
people's lives would be crushed by public
backlash.
I would applaud both.
But other than refusing to buy those
tabloids, is there really much for people
touched by her death to do?
I think so. Consider the many tributes
to the princess applauding the causes she
championed, her kindness toward AIDS
victims, her battle against land mines, her
visits with young children, her notes to
cancer victims.
She brought national attention to her
causes — many of which can be found in
our own community. Last week, we
brought you a story about community
reaction to Princess Diana's death. In the
same edition, we carried a lengthy article
inviting you to lend your free time and
your wealth of talents as a volunteer to
help less fortunate people living in your
town.
Soon, the United Way of Ajax -
Pickering will be asking for your finan-
cial support to help the needy. Before
long, you'll be reminded to_ donate to
food drives as part of your preparations
for Thanksgiving.
There are countless ways we can bring
a smile to people in need and hoar a
woman — not because she was a pincers
— but because she was a humanitarian.
Following her example may be the
greatest way of ensuring that some good
can indeed come from a tragedy.

Ing his OAC year, he teamed up with
eight of his schoolmates because he
wanted to learn more about owning his
own business.
Mr. Wadham's Junior Achievement
company — including three business
advisers — met once a week for three
hour, at the Pickering Recreation Com-
plex.
Mr. Wadham and his team made golf
counters — seven beads on a string used
to count strokes. They sold the product
for $1 apiece to family and friends. A
pretty tidy profit when you consider it
only cost about 30 cents to make each
counter and the firm sold between 300
and 500 pieces.
His team would be the envy of many
companies; partner% manufactured the
counters themselves out of beads and
stung.
Salespeople made 10 -per cent com-
mission, other employees were paid 50
cents an hour, with vice-presidents draw-
ing an additional salary of $2 a week.
Mr. Wadham was among the vice-
presidents; he was in charge of market-
ing.
Among other things, he was responsi-
BIDS
ble for writing letters to potential clients
and making contacts in the business
community.
"It's basically a real company, but
we're a bunch of high school kids;' he
explains.
Upon liquidation of the company, he
and his colleagues sold the counters for
as much as they could get and donated
leftover raw materials to a church to use
in making crafts.
Mr. Wadham has also operated a
cleaning business with a friend through
his own initiative.
Although he's unsure which path he
will take in the
business world,
he's confident
he'll be an entre-
preneur again one
day.

Rugby join Wanderers Ontario team in
BY AL RIvETT
SPORTS REPORTER
AJAX - Several Ajax Wanderers Rugby
Club members will play on the Ontario
senior men's rugby team in a tour of the U.S.
and South America.
Six players from the Wanderers men's
first team were chosen to take part in the
five -game tour - scrum half Glen Miller,
fly half Barry O'Shea, winger Jeremy
Stewart, number eight Adam Van Stavern,
hooker Kevin Morgan and second rowlock
John Druce.
Provincial team assistant coach Bruce
Gage says the tour of the U.S. and South
America will provide top-notch competition
for the Ontanans who will use the experi-
ence to tune up for the national senior rti•n',
rugby championships in '•ancou,.:-
month.
"The focus of the tour is to prepare for
the national championship," says Gage. The
championship will pit Ontario against
British Columbia in a game to be played
over the Thanksgiving
weekend. Ontario has
won the title the past two
years.
The Ajax contingent
will be led by Canadian
national team hooker
Morgan, one of the most GLEN
senior players on the MILLER
Ontario side. The other
Ajax members, says Gage, are all young up-
and-comers on the Canadian men's rugby

who we have some high expectations for,"
says Gage.
The two-week tour commenced Sunday,
Sept. 7 when Ontario plays an exhibition
contest in Washington, D.C. against
Potomac, a regional U.S.
side. Ontario lost
Following the
warm-up contest in the
U.S., the Ontario squad
departed for Argentina,
where it will play its first
JEREMY game against Noreste, a
STEWART regional team in northern
Argentina, on
Wednesday, Sept. 10.
The Ontarians then trave! to Montevideo
in Uruguay to play the Uruguayan national
rugby squad on Saturday, Sept. 13.
The team is then scheduled to play in
Buenos Aires against a regional squad
Wednesday, Sept. 17.
The final game on the tour is in Salta in
northwestern Argentina where Ontario will
take on a provincial team Saturday, Sept. 20.
Gage feels the matches against Uruguay
and Buenos Aires will represent the biggest
tests for the Ontario squad. "They will cer-
tainly be the strongest teams. The other two
teams won't be as strong as the middle two."
He expects the Ontario team to do well
on the tour, but concedes that the travel
schedule could pose a problem.
"We hope to do well. We expect to play
our best games against Uruguay and Buenos
Aires. We would like to win all our games,
but with this kind of travel schedule, it will
be difficult to do," says Gage.
