Hydro nuclear division head Carl Andognini and new I' Pickering nuclear station boss Gene Preston came to Town hall to discuss the status of the plant following the recent release of a brutal assessment report on Hydro's nuclear operations and the utility's Aug. 12 announcement it will indefinitely shut down seven reactors, including four in Pickering. They vowed there will be improved performance at the problem -plagued plant and new honesty in relations among Hydro, the Town and residents. "In order to run an effec- tive nuclear program we have to be an integral part of the community;' said Mr. Andognini, admitting "it's RICE sad the way nuclear has been operated:' He said the AER 'Town and public will be rents kept "totally informed" of ined events at the Pickering sta- tion where safety will con- tinue to be the "number -one priority". A two-man detective team — dubbing itself the "Pawn Squad" — recovered pos- sessions ranging from guitars, leather couches, golf clubs, and ski boots, stolen during a rash of residential break- ins in rural areas of Durham Region and later sold to local pawnbrokers, Durham Region- al Police said. Detectives Dan Wilton and Pat Holtorf, of 17 Division, arrest- ed a 24 -year-old Oshawa man and a 33 -year-old Toronto man Thursday. The pair is now being investigated by the OPP in con- nection with a burglary spree stretching from Cobourg to Tren- ton. Sergeant Jim Grimley said. Sgt. "We're moving in the direction of trying to keep the community fully informed," said Mr. Andognini. Mr. Andognini's and Mr. Pre- ston's promises were met with some suspicion by Council mem- bers. Ward I Regional Councillor Maurice Brenner asked about docu- ments he obtained which showed Hydro management knew about illegal dumping of oil at a landfill on the site before the utility admit- ted to it about 10 days ago. Councillors also maintained they haven't been properly notified by Hydro of occurrences and accidents at the Pickering station. Ward 1 local Councillor Dave Ryan declared citizens don't want to hear any more that something is not a prob- lem at the station because no law or regulation is being broken; they want to know the highest environmental and other standards are being met. Hydro officials admitted at a meeting with Town representatives Wednesday night the illegal dumping had been dis- cussed at the utility for at least a year. On Aug. 27, Hydro issued a press release stating about 40.000 gallons of waste oil was disposed of between 1977 and 1982 in a landfill for construction debris on the site of the nuclear station by Hydro building crews. The utility admit- ted the site was not licensed for liquid industrial waste. accepted full responsi- bility and promised a proper clean-up. The press release also stated Hydro's "current management" learned of the oil contamination only the day before from a long-time employee who came forward after Hydro's recent invitation to staff' to bring to light any past instances where the utility hadn't acted in an environmentally responsible fashion. However, at Wednesday's meeting at the Town hall, Pickering Ward I Region- al Councillor Maurice Brenner presented a copy of a provincial certificate of approval obtained by Hydro in May, 1997 to operate the site which was supposed to have been closed since 1982. "You didn't tell us in May" New Pickering station head Gene Pre- ston said the certificate was obtained to open the site for additional investigation of possible contamination from illegal dumping first revealed by a June, 1996 Hydro internal audit. An environmental consultant was hired as a result of the audit to look into the situation at the land- fill, and that consultant recommended the further investigation. Mc Preston maintained he and Hydro nuclear division head Carl Andognini only learned of the illegal dumping from an employee on Aug. 26 and issued the press release based on that information. He said they found out afterwards about the new certificate and previous] informa- tion about the illegal dumping. "This was uncovered some time before and I was not aware of it and Gene was not aware of it," said Mr. Andognini. However. Coun. Brenner questioned how they could have not known of the illegal dumping when an exhaustive review of nucle4r operations was being conducted at the time the new certificate for the landfill was issued. He noted cer- tificate conditions requited Hydro to issue a monitoring report on the site by Aug. 29, two days after the press release. Coun. Brenner wondered why Hydro didn't tell the Town about the contamina- tion of the landfill when it first came to light and why the Ministry of the Envi- ronment didn't inform the Town of a new landfill certificate being issued, as estab- lished protocol requires. Hydro spokesman Terry Young said the fact Mr. Andognini and Mr. Preston weren't told of the landfill situation is a "perfect example" of the kind of manage- ment problems described in the highly - critical assessment report on its nuclear division recently released by Hydro. While the Paris car crash that took the life of Diana, Princess of Wales, early last Sunday sparked an outpouring of grief' around the world, it has also raised questions about the unrelenting paparazzi and the tabloids that buy and print their pictures. "What's happened is tragic," says Roy Tsagris, owner of The Newsroom at the Oshawa Centre, a store which offers its cus- lomcrs reading material ranging from trade magazines to the National Enquirer - the tabloid that featured a front page story last week about Diana's sex life with her compan- ion Dodi Al Fayed. "Unfortunately people read these things;" he says, likening the interest in tabloids to the attention the Howard Stern radio show attract- ed last week as the self-proclaimed king of all media stormed Toronto airwaves. "People say they don't like him but they lis- ten to him;" he says, adding "people say they don't like tabloids but they buy them." Mr. Tsagris says he didn't pull copies of the National Enquirer featuring the Diana story because the issue quickly sold out. "Once (the accident) happened everybody wanted to buy something with her picture on it;" he says, adding he did receive a couple of complaints from customers urging him to remove the issue from shelves "because of what tabloids represent. - However, while Mr. Tsagris says the store usually doesn't sell "a lot" of tabloids, he adds there is "obviously" a big market for them. "People want these things... even if it's just for a quick read," he says, adding he thinks tabloids will "try to legitimize themselves" in light of the princess's death. Mohammed Polani, owner of the Daily Local bookstores pulled this copy of the National Enquirer over a cover pointing readers to a Princess Di sex story. Planet on Dundas Street East in Whitby, says he pulled copies of the National Enquirer last Tuesday because he felt the story of Diana's love affair was "not acceptable" in light of the fatal crash. Yet he says he doesn't believe the public backlash towards the paparazzi and the tabloids will affect the way they do business in the future. "As long as people have the hunger to read the garbage in those papers those paparazzi will be fat:" he says. "As an individual retailer there is not much we can do ... as long as there's a market that crime will continue to take place." Several Hollywood celebrities voiced dis- dain towards the paparazzi and the tabloids last week on American television, saying the relentless pursuit of stars is a gross invasion of privacy that must be stopped. Fran Drescher of the television sitcom The Nanny even likened the relationship to that of a "predator" and its prey... Yet local news agents say they think the anger towards the tabloids will soon blow over. "It'll last a couple of weeks and then that's it," says Issa Kakish, owner of the Smoker's Corner in the Pickering Town Centre. Mr. Kakish says the store receives hundreds of copies of tabloids each week and sells close to 80 per cent of the papers prominently dis- played at the front of the store. "If somebody doesn't want to buy it ... then just leave it," he says, adding he didn't pull copies of the National Enquirer from shelves last week. It was widely reported in the days following Diana's death that pictures of the crushed Mer- cedes carrying the princess and her compan- ions are for sale on the international market and that the National Enquirer has turned them down. However, Mr. Kakish says if pictures of Diana in the wreckage hit the pages of the tabloids he doesn't think he'd pull those either. "I think 1 would display them because peo- pie want to see them ... if they don't buy them here they'll only go somewhere else," he says. Steve Coz, editor of the National Enquirer, could not be reached by the News Advertiser for comment at his Florida office. "Within a few weeks it (the controversy surrounding tabloids) will all be forgotten," Mr. Polani says. "It will not affect any of them... mine victims People who want to do something special to commemorate the passing of of Diana, Princess of Wales, might wapt to consider making a donation in her memory to a local fund that helps vic- tims of land mines. One of the principal causes the Princess devoted herself to recently was the elimination of land mines. The local fund has been established for about a year by the Waging Peace Committee of Dunbarton-Fairport Unit- ed Church in Pickering. The committee raises money to buy mobile medical kits to treat land mine victims, and provides them to the medical aid group, Doctors Without Borders. Donations to the fund may be made through the church by mail, over the phone or in person at the church office. Cheques should be made out to Dunbar - ton -Fairport United Church. with "for victims of land mines" written on the front or back. We've seen and read the coverage. We've dis- cussed the tragedy in our homes, our places of employment, at social functions. We've watched the media dissect the events lead- ing up to the tragic crash in a Paris traffic tunnel. But the substance of the debate has focused on the so-called 'Stalk-arazzi', those photographers who fol- low celebrities, wherever they may be, in a bid to cap- ture a high -paying picture. But the debate has been limited. Little of substance has been said about our shared responsibility which led, in some measure at least, to Diana's tragic death. The reading public are providing the fuel which feeds the tabloid machine. Our demand for these images, sa) Durham Region newspaper and magazine retailers, provides the motivation for such 'Stalk- arazz i' . And we do share a measure of the blame. Society's apparent hunger to revel in the tawdry details of a public person's private moments is insatiable. Yet few of us admit to buying U.S. tabloids. What isn't likely to result from Diana's death is a global push to tinker with right -to -privacy laws. Less likely is an outright ban on so-called 'Stalk-arazzi' because that could well infringe on freedom -of -press legislation long established in many nations. Perhaps the solution lies in examining our own selfish thirst for invasive knowledge about celebrity. If we each choose to ignore the seedy appeal of a for- bidden celebrity kiss, a drunken sports hero, or a lovestruck woman of royalty, the demand for scan- dalous photos would diminish. By taking a stand and deciding where to draw the line on what we are seeing, we would be sending a timely and necessary message. If any blame is to be assigned in the aftermath of this tragedy, we all must share in it. But an opportuni- ty exists, even in the midst of this global wave of pub- lic grief, for us to exploit. There was some discussion, prior to leaving the house, with my seven-year- old daughter Melissa, as to what she should do with her new cyberspace pets (a yellow dinkie dino and a yellow Tamagotchi) while we went for a swim, as they would not survive at home alone. She had waited and saved for one of these hot -selling toys all summer, but didn't save the required $23 purchase price until her birthday Aug. 13. She was fortunate to receive birthday money and at long last she was able to purchase one of these toys. She received the other as a birthday gift. Anyway, we decided to take them along to the pool, and we would keep them in our duffel bag in the pool area where they would be safe and she could check on them periodically. To our disbelief, they were stolen from the bag we had left on the pool dock between 3:30 and 4 pm. We waited until pool closing when everyone had left, and no one had turned them in to the life- guards on duty. I'd like the thief to know that you broke my daughter's heart. Instead of her looking forward with excitement to Grade 2 at a new school the next day, she was brought to tears. In a sad sortof way, part of her innocence was gone. Unlike the thief, Melissa learned to do chores and save her allowance all sum- mer long and still had to wait until the summer nearly ended to buy her long- awaited cyberspace pets. In a flash, they were stolen. Now there is someone else wearing one or both of these toys and does not deserve to have this enjoyment. I write this letter in the slim hope there is a parent who may read it and has recently noticed their child wearing one or both of these yellow toys around their neck and did not have the 546 to pur- chase them. Perhaps they will ask their child how they came into their posses- sion. The Ajax Community Centre has the information for them to be returned to their rightful owner and perhaps this would make the summer of '97 one that my daughter would like to remember. Well, I also need two incomes and I don't make the six figures a week Steve pulls in. Steve believes reigning in spending is the route to economic salva- tion. I, however, think economic expan- sion is the way to go — specifically a second job. Lord knows I have the time, being single (despite my good looks and charm) and being completely devoid of a life. There's nothing wrong with having two jobs. Just ask Deion Sanders. He plays football and baseball. Although why someone getting paid $35 mill to play football needs a second job to make ends meet is beyond me. Picking a second career is the hard part. Firstly, there's no use choosing a job that doesn't pay well. Why stay Poor while I'm trying to get rich? There's public office. Here in Ajax, a local politician makes about $17,000 a year, plus all the free dinners they can invite themselves to. Judging by the looks of some of the male members of Ajax council, they've been invited to quite a few free meals. In return, politi- cians get to sit around and debate stimu- lating topics, like property tax assess- ment reform. How about being a teacher? When I was in school, all my teachers ever did was scream at me and call me "God's gift to stupidity". Most of my female teachers spent their days chewing nuts and growing moustaches. I could get a job in an office, but that would mean having to wear a tie. I'd have to mail my tie home to Mom to have her knot it properly. Them I'd never take it off. What I could do instead is become manager and make the big bucks, lik they do here. But, that would mean I' have to supervise the likes of me. Durham cops seize record amount of hash oil in raids Three charged, more arrests expected, say Durham Regional Police BY STEPHEN SHAW DURHAM STAFF Drug squad raids at two Oshawa homes resulted in the arrests of three residents and the seizure of 15 pounds of hash oil - a bust being called the biggest of its kind ever in Durham. In addition to the hash oil, which has an esti- mated street price of $135,000, Durham Regional Police also recovered paraphernalia used to heat and package the drug and $37,000 in alleged crime proceeds while executing search warrants Tuesday afternoon and evening. Sergeant Jack Dancey, head of the drug unit, said the investigation, which began several months ago, is continuing and more arrests are expected in the coming days. Not since a smaller 10 -pound bust several years ago have Durham police struck oil on such a large scale, he said. The sizable seizure may dry up the well of hash oil in the region for a brief period though, realistically, the flow will continue, Sgt. Dancey said. "I think this will make a dent for a short time but our investigation has revealed that this type of quantity, and even larger amounts, are being brought in and distributed on a weekly basis," he said. Sgt. Dancey said much of the hash oil seized was still stashed in "bodypacks'. indicating it was likely hidden on individuals and only recently smuggled into Ontario. Some of the drug was "pure" and some of it had been diluted with vitamin E, he added. All was destined for the streets of Durham Region. Three Oshawa residents appeared at bail hearings in Oshawa provincial court Wednes- day charged in connection with the police raids. Fitzgerald Piekenbrock, 33, of Carnaby Crescent, is charged with two counts each of possession of a controlled substance for the purpose of trafficking and possession of the proceeds of crime. Shelly Banks, 36, of Carnaby Crescent, is charged with possession of the proceeds of crime. James McNally, 37, of Conlin Road East, is charged with one count of possession of the proceeds of crime and two counts of possession for the purpose of trafficking. Drivers with graduated licences are not allowed to drive between midnight and 5 a.m. and are not allowed to have any alcohol in their blood system, cautions Durham Regional Police Inspector John Hamilton. Ontario got off to a slow start as B.C. applied the pressure and jumped out to a 7-0 lead as the West's forwards used their size to their advantage. However, the speedy Ontarians rebounded to score two tires and take a 12-7 half-time lead. Ontario's superior fitness showed in the second half as late tries by Wanderers' Tara Trussell and Anne Marie Fleming brought the score to 26-7. Fleming also kicked three conversions in the winning cause. The victory gave Ontario its fourth cham- pionship in the 11 -year history of the women's national tournament. Ontario didn't play in the inaugural event in 1987. Alberta won the first four Canadian titles; British Columbia has won three. Ontario, captained by Wanderers' Joanne Gardner, started the event with a 29-8 victory over Alberta Sunday to put Ontario in the final against B.C. Moira Shiels of the Wanderers scored the first try and Fleming kicked three conversions and a penalty. Erik Cuzzolino, 17, will fly to Vancouver for a three-day training camp with the national under -17 team beginning Sept. 15 prior to Flying on Sept. 18 to Germany where the squad will tour until Sept. 30. In Germany, the Canadians will suit up for four games against top -calibre teams two years their senior. The national team will play the German national under -19 squad, the English Institute of Heidelberg, the southern Germany under -19 club and the Hannover under -19 team. The Grade 12 student at Pickering High School in Ajax was one of I1 players from Ontario at try -outs in Victoria in late August. After a gru- elling five-day evaluation and camp, Cuzzolino earned his way onto the national squad. "It was brutal training;' says Cuzzolino, a fly -half with the national team. "Everyone there ate, slept and drank rugby. In the fall of 1991 a partnership was formed with the Rotary Club of Parkwood Oshawa by Mr. Lennis Trotter. It was then a decision was made to look for a second site more immediately available as donated land in Ajax remained stalled by Regional zoning. In early 1992 the Durham Board of Education sealed their approval of the project with the lease of property behind Kathleen Rowe Memorial School in Whitby. The servicing was done for the site in the summer of 1994. In March 1995 a Constable was assigned full-time to the Village to co-ordinate and teach safety lessons to the children. The classroom was built in a barn raising fashion starting the weekend of April 22. The Oshawa Durham Home Builders Association agreed to erect the building with donated labour and materials from its members. The completion of the classroom construction made it possible to begin construction on the sponsored "miniature" buildings in the Village. These buildings are built by corporate sponsors to be representative of their own businesses. They are set on 1.2 acres of property and are mixed with just the right amount of pavement sidewalks street sjEns traffic lights and other "village" paraphemalia to create a realistic setting for the children to safely test their safety skills. All students in Durham Region in Grade 1, 2 and 3 are invited to attend the Village during the school year. Approximately 15.000 students went through in the first year. These children will come from the four different school boards in the Region, home schoolers and private schools. Grade 2 attends in the fall for a traffic safety lesson and a drive in the Village in battery operated Peg Peregq cars. In the winter months the grade 'I's get a lesson on the safety rules and then a walk through the Village. Prior to driving bicycles, the grade 3's learn about bicycle safety- Each course will also include a variety of other safety related information. The classroom lesson is about 30 minutes and the time spent in the Village will be about an hour. Reservations for the upcoming year will be taken until all the spots are full.
