PrC,ST_un 1-000 28 pages Another spill `Heavy' water released into Lake Ontario BY MARIANNE TAKACS STAFI- RFP04rrER PICKERING — Drinking water at Durham Regions Ajax water treatment plant is being tested for tritium levels every two hours following a spill Brom the Pickering Nuclear Generating Station into Lake Ontario Wednesday night. The leaf: from a moderator heat exchanger in the station's Unit 2 reactor was detected around I I p.m., reports Ontario Hydro spokesman Terry Young. He says two litres of 'heavy' water, which is contaminated with radioactive tritium, leaked from the heat exchanger into the regular water which is used as a coolant and then released back into the lake. The Unit 2 reactor was shut down by about 10 a.m. Thursday. Sampling at the outflow from the Pickering plant into the lake indicated a tritium level of 177 becquerels per litre at the time of the spill, said Mr. Young. "Tile official drinking water (limit) for tritium is 7.000 becquerels per litre;' said Durham Region associate medical officer of health Dr. Linda Panaro. ..That's the amount at which DAVE MARTIN Says he is suspicious INSIDE Half Mast - schools, others pay i tribute to niemory of Diana -- PaW 4. This spill is nowhere near that figure" "We're going to be testing every two hours for at least two days, possibly three;' explained the doctor Thursday. If tritium levels start rising at Ajax, more frequent testing could be extended to water plants in Oshawa. Bow- manville and Scarborough. Testing for tritium is routinely done twice a day at the Ajax plant. More fre- quent sampling is being done there because wind patterns indicated the con- taminated water from the nuclear station See NVATER/Page 3 )RY IN AMONN Sunday, Septembw 7th PICKERING MUSEUM v r -VILLAGE 3 km east of Brock Rd. on Hwy. 7 683-8401 [Drivers Nanted.TM ALES • SERVICE • LEASING RENTALS • BODY SHOP KERING VOLKSWAGEN INC. ingston Rd. The provincial government's trustee distribution in municipalities across Ontario resulted in a delay in the regis- tration process for people seeking spots on the separate and public school boards. Durham Board of Education director Grant Yeo says the Province has now heard all appeals regarding the distribu- tion of trustees and has given candidates ,,a10=Ws :{IfIs the go-ahead to register. "Iirey couldn't start until the appeals had been heard by the Education Improvement Commission;' says Mr. Yeo, who notes all appeals initialed by Durham municipalities were dismissed two weeks ago. . He says the board recently received a letter frau the EIC which was forward- ed to the clerk's departments in Durharn mu nicipahties. The deadline to file nomination papers for the Nov. 10 election is OcL 10. Mr. Yeo says "it's difficult to say" how the shortened time frame will affect \1! the process. . Under the Fewer School Boards Act, the role of trustees will be redefined. According to the EIC, trustees will over- see the implementation of provincial curriculum and be responsible for poli- cy-making as it affects their respective school board operations. They will also ensure the implemen- tation of the provisions of the Education Act, approve school board policies and procedures, res, and report to the Ministry of Education and Training and the public on die implementation of performance See TRUSTEES/Page 3 PAGE 2 -THE NEWS r►DVERLTI.SFA FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 5, 1997 D z E Ai LIF 1 , 1 •ti ' ' WHAT MAKES MACHINE SUMMIT UNIQUE? » Pentium Intel 200 Mhz MMX •►Gigabyte TX Mainboard - Lowest price on w/512k Cache »64 Meg EDO Memory quality product A »3.5 Gig Enhanced IDE Drive - Over 15 locations ` +17" SVGA Digital Monitor to serve you *ATI 3D /2 Meg Graphic Card - Qualified staff » 56k Voice fax modem »Soundblaster 64 (Value) - No interest - No 0104 Windows 95 Keyboard Payments - Up t0 120 Watt Speakers 6 months »1.44 Floppy Drive - Volume pricing »20x CD ROM through major 7 -*Medium Tower Case distribution *MS Compatible mouse pad IN917" Monitor *Windows 95 CD w/manuals - SIX month Included +One Month Free Internet exchange warranty 1 FAMI SYSTEM » P-166 Mhz Processor -0 Pentium MMX-MBwl512k Cache *16 Meg EDO Ram ►1.44 Floppy Drive 1.7 Gig H.D. . 1 Meg Graphic Card •" •►14" SVGA Monitor. 28 dp -*16x CD Rom •►31D Sound Card -0 55 Watt Speakers ' ►' A •►104 Windows 95 KB 33.6 Voice fax modem •► Medium Tower Case Choice of *MS Compatible mouse b pad 7 Colour •► Lexmark 1000 Colour Jet Printer Printer or *One Month Free Internet Flatbed Scanner Windows 95 w/ CD Manual AA ti Pack of CD titles CaOn Brilliant color printing that adds life -like characteristics to your every creation. "We're still going to be doing that, starting Sept. 5;" said Sid Ryan, Ontario president of LUPE. "One half- hour meeting doesn't change an awful lot." Thcre's no date yet for meetings of Durham locals. Mr. Ryan said locals which have already taken strike votes can decide whether to hold new votes. The Whitby resident was one of several union leaders who met with Mr. Harris and several cabinet minis- ters Tuesday to discuss Bill 136, which would effectively ban strikes by public sector unions during the merger of municipalities, hospitals and school boards. The unions want the legisla- tion, which has received first reading, scrapped and the current Ontario Labor Relations Board expanded to help sort out amalgamation issues. "The meeting was a good meeting;' Mr. Ryan said. "The objective was to ensure the premier took our alterna- tives seriously" He said Mr. Harris seemed to take the matter "seriously enough" to set up a team to look at the proposals. Mr. Harris promised to contact the unions within 10 days to state whether further negotiations are called for, after con- sulting with employer groups, includ- ing the Ontario Hospital Association and the Association of Municipalities of Ontario. 'One meeting with the premier is not going to stop us mobilizing;' Mr. Ryan said. "Harris told us he would consider our proposals. He hasn't agreed to them. The best way to nego- tiate with this government is to have a strong strike mandate:' Locals will be asked to hold votes on whether or not to strike against Bill 136, under which two commissions would be formed. One would settle disputes concerning union jurisdiction in amalgamations while the other would have the power to impose first contracts. Durham Centre MPP Jim Flaherty said the unions might have been better to meet with Labor Minister Elizabeth Witmer, who had earlier offered union leaders a written invitation to meet about the legislation. But the outcome of the meeting with Mr. Harris was positive for every- one, he said. The premier stated the government's general policy direction is set but indicated there is room for discussion about the "ways and means" of achieving those goals, the MPP said. On Sunday, Sept. 14 thousands of participants in over 4.(X)0 towns and cities across the country — including Ajax, Pickering, Whitby. Oshawa and Bowmanville — will lace up their run- ning and walking shoes to raise money for cancer research while commemorat- ing the legacy of Tem Fox. Diane Noiles, co-ordinator of the Oshawa run for the past seven years, says the event continues to grow and credits Mr. Fox's spirit for the continued desire to keep his dream alive. "Tem had a lot to do with it;' she says. "His goal was to stop the hurting. His goal was that every bit of money raised would go toward cancer research" According to the Terry Fox Founda- tion more than $190 million has been raised for research over the past 17 years. In 1977 Mr. Fox, then IS, lost his leg to bone cancer and decided to run across Canada to raise money for cancer research. He began his Marathon of Hope in 1980 and ran an average of 26 miles a day for 143 days until he was forced to stop because the cancer had returned. He died in lune 1991. ..It's touched a lex of people:' says Lisa Warth, co-ordinator of the Ajax run. "There's a lot of new faces each year." The event drew approximately 250 participants in Ajax last year and raised more than $13,5(X) even though it wa, pouring rain, Ms. Warth says. If the weather is good "we're expecting more people this year." Pat Salisbury, organizer of the Whit- by run, says while there are a lot of "faithful" participants each year, "We've had more participants every year and our money has increased every year" Participants can raise funds by col- lecting pledge sheets or by making con- tributions at the tun site. Come autumn many gardeners are left lamenting about the lack Of color in their gardens. Retailers are starting to .ret wise and offer these late bloomers at a time when You can see what the flower looks like. With a little orchestration You can extend color in your garden until the first frost and a bit beyond. The obvious choice of course, is chrysanthemum, which, if you are not aware, is now officially called dendran- themum. Noted plants woman Marjorie Mason Hogue rec- ommends _ the variety "Ft. If you want height at the back of the border you will want to include aconitum, commonly known as monks- hood. Tall, up to five feet, with lovely spires of blue flowers, it also provides a lovely foliage for most of the sum- mer. Many of you will know the Joe-Pye-Weed that is often seen in local fields. I like the native form, but is also available in a variety called "chocolate" and as the name suggests has dark burgundy stems and leaves with white flowers. Phlox is an old-fashioned perennial that we all both love and hate at the same time. It's beautiful to he sure, but is plagued by mildew that makes the plant look quite disgusting. I haven't tried it, but I'm told that a new variety, phlox pan- iculata "David" is very fra- grant, creamy white and does- n't get mildew. One of my favorite flowers for arranging in the autumn is goldeni-W. &:fore you start sneezing, contrary to popular myth, this plant is not respon- sible for allergies. You can thank ragweed for that! The botanical name for goldenrod is solidago and "fireworks" is a lovely variety you might look out for. Another one of my favored perennials for floral design is physostegia. You may know it as obedient plant and it has glossy pointed dark green leaves and spikes of flowers in pink or white. In a previous garden I had a variety that had variegated cream and light green leaves with mauve pink flowers. It was lovely and lasted 10 days as a cut flower. The common asters you see in drifts of lavender and white in the meadows should have a place in the garden. You can buy some fine hybridized varieties in shades Book Now. 0 Travel. Pay Later. McGillis gave credit to two of his rook- ies — right winger Louis Foulidis and cenireman and local product Tyler Middlebrook — for performing well in their first exhibition game tests. Foulidis opened the scoring for Pickering in the first period and assisted on veteran Chris Hunter's marker late in the third stanza. "Louis played well and Middlebrook was impressive, too;" says McGillis. He's also a rookie as head coach of the Panthers. McGillis spent the past three seasons as an assistant coach, but feels his past experience behind the bench will serve him well in his new position. "Firstly, I'm very honored Ron (Blizzard, Panthers' general manager) and the organization have given me the oppor- tunity to step in as the head coach. I feel well prepared and excited about the chal- lenge;' says McGillis. After an impressive 1996-97 campaign by the Panthers which saw them finish first in the league's East Division, chalk up a winning record of 34-12-4 and earn a playoff berth, McGillis says he doesn't feel any undue pressure to repeat the team's feat of a year ago. "I think the pressure is always there, but I'm the kind of guy who puts pressure on myself. There are a lot of new faces in the dressing room, so it's a brand new team. We're starting on the ground floor, so we're certainly going to go through the growing process." The Panthers will get the chance to redeem themselves in a re -match with the Rattlers tonight, Friday, Sept. 5, in Thornhill. McGillis says the team will use -an entirely different line-up for this con- test to give the coaches and scouts a chance to view the play of more rookie hopefuls. Pickering plays at home on Saturday, Sept. 6 against the Wexford Raiders at 4 p.m., then travels to Wexford on Sunday. Sept. 7 for a I p.m. date with the Raiders. The Panthers' season opener is tenta- tively scheduled for the complex on Friday, Sept. 12 at 7:30 p.m. against the North York Rangers. PANTHERS' POSTSCRIPT: The Panthers released four players following Wednesday's game — wingers Andrew Cowling, John Benczkowski and Tom Spencer and centreman Jeff Miles — all who've played hockey in the Ajax and Pickering minor systems. "All of them had good camps;' says McGillis ... The Panthers currently have 28 players remaining on the roster, but hope to have that number trimmed to 22 or 23 after the final exhibition game against Wexford. 11i"story in Action piCKElilll usell, _LX r Ihxg .....,. ` o.se + ttarrt e 1 t tt■rJot us strew d- ADMMON: Adults 85 FanWiii s 815. Bible. It's a procedure that takes very little time compared to the amount of time clients enjoy clean, dust free air in their homes and it's further beneficial in that it reduces heating and cooling costs. The large, truck -mounted, vacuum unit shown in the photo above, packs more power for those tough jobs they encounter. The procedure is simple. Sam first closes off vents and makes an opening in the main dud. The, while the vacuum unit sucks air into a holding chamber, a hose is put into the upstairs vents, one at a time, and blows the dust and dirt into the downstairs unit. They also use the air snake method which ensures duds are completely rid of dust and debris. This method consists of a device being inserted into the ductwork while a mobile head reaches into every inch of duct work to dislodge dust and debris. "Dust will not only affect your health but ruin furniture and draperies," says Sam. "Having your ducts cleaned cuts down on clean- ing and adds life to your furniture, carpet and drapes." tackles easier Sam also provides chimney sweeping at competitive prices with service that is always friendly and --ourteous. Caps and screens are also available to keep out unwanted pets. Presently, Gardiner's Duct Cleaning is offering a Summer Special featuring a hook-up for $39.95, plus $5.00 per vent, with a minimum of 12 vents and chimney sweeping for $59.95. In addition, there are two new services available with the purchase of duct cleaning and include dryer dud cleaning for only $20.00 and brick and stone fireplaces cleaned with free esti- mates available upon request.
