tive Homes in partnership with the Deohaeko Support
Network arc among 26 finalists named for the Caring
Communities Award to be granted by the Trillium Foun-
dation, Ontario's largest charitable foundation.
The award recognizes communities in Ontario for
their leadership and innovation in building social and
e.onomic progress. The Trillium
foundation is funded by the Ontario
I ottery Corporation and provides

and Whitby, had to be eliminated from further
consideration due to the dry conditions, Ms.

one in north Pickering are up for the two top
prizes in the contest, she says.

people to check their change after she unknow-
ingly received an Italian lira in place of a twoonie
recently.
"1 was jus emptying out my change pulse yes-
terday," Shirley Dynes said Monday. I was
putting the loonies and twoonies into piles and
there was one in the middle Ural didn't look right"
She took a closer look and discovered that
what she thought was a twoome was instead an
Italian coin that's remarkably similar to our $2
coin — with a gold -colored centre surrounded by
silver. The lira "is just a bit smaller".
In a quick call to the bank, she leamed the lira

minutes at the intersection of Liver-
pool Road and Bayly Street.
-It was the rain" that caused the
mishaps, says Durham Regional
Police Constable Phil Edgar. who
had been on the scene of the acci-
dents.
"It hasn't rained for awhile and I
think everybody forgot what to do. It
was just accident after accident"
He says the brief shower left the
roads oily. There were no serious
injuries, but the crashes caused
severe property damage.
A four -car pileup between 3:30
and 3:45 p.m. took place when one
vehicle turned in front of another
which managed to stop but others
couldn't, leading to a chain reaction.
Const. Edgar says.
Shortly after. a car rear-ended
another vehicle in the traffic conges-
tion from the first accident, he
reports. Minutes later. a car went
around a corner tori fast and slid into
a median sign, knocking it down.
The driver didn't step. Const. Edgar
says.Then shortly after 4 p.m.. two
vehicles, one eastbound and one
southbtwnof, collided in the intersec.
tion. Both vehicles sustained sub-
stantial damage.

tionships and friendships to its mem-

Drive in Pickering offers a safe, car-
ing environment where residents
with developmental disabilities are
comfortable seeking advice and sup-
port from each other. The goal is to
increase their confidence and ability
to pursue their own interests as well
as to contribute to the lives of their
neighbors and community.
"Being selected as a finalist by
the Trillium Foundation for this
award represents a milestone for us:"
said Rougemount-Deohaeko
spokesman Linda Dawe.
"We know the people of Deo-
haeko and Rougemount are proud of
their community and have worked
incredibly hard to make a positive
difference. This is a tribute to a great
many people "
Overall, 167 communities from
across the province were nominated
for the Caring Communities Award.
The 25 finalists are eligible to be
named as one of the top five caring
communities in Ontario. The win-
ning organizations will each receive
a $20.000 grant for further commu-
nity development work.
Multiple Sclerosis Society
hosts bazaar, teen dance
The Multiple Sclerosis Society is
looking for volunteers to help orga-
nize a fund-raising bazaar and a
dance -a -thou for teens.
The second annual bazaar will be
held sometime in November and six
to eight people are needed to look
after things like sponsorship, logis-
tics and media relations.
The society is also looking for 10
to 12 people to help organize securi-
ty and prizes for its first dance-a-
thon for teens, to be held Friday.

The provincial government will face a fight from the
Canadian Union of Public Employees if it changes contri-
butions to public -sector pensions, says the union's Ontario
leader.
Sid Ryan says public sector pensions belong to workers
in municipalities, schools, hospitals, colleges, universities
and other government agencies.
"The government is talking about greater control of pub-
lic -sector pension costs;" he says.
According to a report in a Toronto
I
newspaper last week, the Ontario gov-
ernment is said to be considering
changes to the pension plans covering
teachers, municipal employees and
other public sector workers.
The changes would allow the gov-
ernment to reduce the money it con-
tributes to the plans by using accumu-
lated and anticipated surpluses to
reduce the amount it pays into the pen -

Elliot Katz, spokesman for the Ministry of Labor, says

Mr. Katz says the draft document outlining proposed
changes in contributions to public sector pensions has not
been reviewed by the minister of finance.
"We're not commenting on it," he says, adding he does
not know when the document is to be reviewed by the min-
ister.
