PICKERING — Two men who
spent a night clinging to their cap-
sized boat after a fishing expedition
went terribly wrong Tuesday believe
they have guardian angels to thank
for their survival.
"We are blessed. We had guardian
angels out there:' Paul Murphy, 25,

man's Bay Yacht Club.
He went fishing with newfound
friend Gary Hynes, 27, of Pickering,
around 5 p.m. from East Shane Mari-
na at the bottom of L.ikcrpool Road in
his 17 -foot Boston Whaler -type brat.
Though the boat is equipped with
two motors and a marine radio, mi-
ther could help the pair when the ves-
sel "took on a big, big wave, followed
by another one and went down"
around 8 p.m., recalled Mr. Murphy.
The boat capsized about five miles
offshore in Ajax, and was dragged by
winds to Oshawa before the winds
changed and pulled them to Scarbor-
ough. They were located about 10
miles offshore there around 8:30 a.m.
Wednesday.
The hours in between were "cold
and lonely:' admitted Mr. Murphy.
"We stuck together and sat on top of
the boat. We told each other to be
strong, that we were going to get

Scrap the
patient -doctor
contract
If the Ministry of Health has its way, it may
soon come to this: you'll have to sign a contract
with your doctor in order to receive medical care.
Why? It's because through this proposed roster-
ing system the ministry wants to have more control
over billing procedures and limits. It says rostering
would simplify the whole system and would allow
physicians to identify with their patients.
Rostering would commit patients to a minimum
of six weeks with a doctor and to a maximum of
three doctor changes a year. That may sound rea-
sonable enough on the surface but it takes some-

If I was asked what my political
stripes were I must admit I'd have a
hard time providing a quick answer. In
the past, I've always considered myself
a liberal thinker. I believe in freedom of

What tropical plant is highly fragrant, creamy
white and blooms only in the darkness of the
night? You'd be right if you guessed selenice-
rious grandiflorus, or as it's commonly
referred to, the Queen -of -the -Night.
Goodwood gardener David Gribble is the
proud owner of this nocturnal beauty and this
year it sported a record 60 buds. Gribble kept
his greenhouse open for five or six hours one
night early in July so that friends and cus-
tomers of his Goodwood Gardens could wit-
ness the one -night -only show put on by the
plant. No one was disappointed. Just after sun-
set, more than half the buds began to open and
a heady vanilla -like scent wafted throughout
the greenhouse. The buds, about the size of a
lemon opened into full white blossoms, bigger
than a man's hand, in less than an hour. By
dawn the blooms had collapsed.
Gribble's plant is about 25 years old and
was given to him by Celia Drew of Uxbridge
10 years ago. It's a large specimen now, more
than three metres high and has grown to the
top of the greenhouse.
A native of the West Indies, this Vee
dwelling cactus has long five -to -eight ribbed
stems that can grow up to 16 feet long and one -
inch thick, producing short, sharp spines and
many climbing air roots.
In its natural habitat the stems, which grow
as much as a yard each year, can he framed to

the mother plant and are offering them for sale.
My husband Walter, couldn't resist buying
one. I'm told the one we purchased does have
a couple of buds. Right now they are the size
of a grain of rice.
If any of you are as curious as Walter and
just have to get one, here are some guidelines
to keep your Queen -of -the -Night growing and
maybe even blooming, too.

or curtain -filtered sunlight and relatively high
humidity.

Keep the growing medium evenly moist
and fertilize every two weeks from spring to
late summer with a low nitrogen house plant
fertilizer such as 5-10-10 diluted to half the
strength recommended on the label. For the
rest of the year keep plants fairly dry and do
not fertilize d --m. Propogate from tip or joint
cuttings any time.
