Alyson Sonnenschein of My School has written a letter to the Town of Pickering explaining the significance of the bell to the old Kinsale school, located at Hwy. 7 and Lakcndge Road. "The bell on a school was a very signifi- cant component to the community:' she notes. "It was often used to tell the time by the people in the surrounding area, as it rang at 9 a.m., 12 anon, I p.m. and 4 p.m. "It is our intent that the bell be used by children who have done a good deed. They will be given the honor of ringing the bell. All of Pickering will know that something special happened at My School" Acquiring the bell is in keeping with My School's mission statement: "An education with contemporary beliefs and old-fash- ioned values" Ms. Sonnenschein and her family have spent more than $200.000 restoring the interior and exterior of the building. The original wainscoting was removed, numbered and stripped before being rehung. The original windows were repaired and the maple floor was sanded and sealed. During renovations, Ms. Sonnenschein came across the school's original black- board, with a lesson believed dating back to the 1920s. A number of artifacts will be displayed above the blackboard behind tempered glass. The schoolhouse will be used as a gym- nasium, while a large addition will serve as Vie preschool. Ms. Sonnenschein's husband scanned ;one of the many photographs donated to the Preschool and referred to it when building a 'new bell tower that resembles the original. Ms. Sonnenschein says the bell is cur- rently being used at the Greenwood library ..only in an aesthetic fashion:' She is willing to ,purchase the bell or .accept it on loan and will pay for all costs incurred in its relocation. She believes the bell is worth about ,$350. Town councillors were to consider her request at their council meeting last night. And even after it did mail correspondence to businesses about the bylaws, it hasn't followed up with enforcement. She believes the Town "should be pushing (bylaw department officers) to ensure they're doing the job they should be doing ... The fines they are collecting could be used to pay their salaries." Ms. Burton points to the Town of Ajax as a good example of bylaw enforcement. "If I have a problem in Ajax, they inspect it — usually with- in 24 hours. The business is given a certain amount of time to have it done or the Town will find them and paint it at their expense" Ms. Burton says she has approached a number of businesses demanding that they adhere to the new bylaws, but to no avail. "Disabled people want to shop too:' says Ms. Burton, who is also frustrated by the number of restaurants which have wheelchair -accessible washrooms, but don't have correctly -identified parking spots. The mysteries of Tai Chi BY SHAWN SIAIPSON DURHAM STAFI- As a spectator, it may seem hard to believe something so beautiful, so graceful. is akin to some of the deadliest forms of martial arts. Tai Chi Chuan, meaning 'grand ultimate fist.' is an ancient Chinese combat discipline dating back to the Tang Dynasty. But over the cen- turies, Tai Chi has evolved into a welcomed therapeutic activity for many 20th century North Ameri- cans. "Tai Chi has been referred to as meditation in motion." says Andy Hourahine, co -manager. assistant instructor and full-time student of Karate and Tai Chi at the Academy of Martial Arts in Whitby. "The main focus of tai Chi is bal- ance. co-ordination. body movement and breathing. If you can control your breathing you can control your- self" According to legend. the founder of Tai Chi. Jan San Feng, modelled the art after the movements of the snake. tiger. crane. leopard, and the tiger. He sought a style of martial art that was soft and sloe but was full of energy. The result was Tai Chi in all its four forms: the most common and seemingly most popular is the Yang style. ..The Yang style emphasizes the shoulders above the hips, balance and linepr movements: says Sir. Hourahine, who teaches the Yang style at the Academy. It's a good low impact. cardiovascular exercise that burns more fat cells as opposed to calories. he says. In the past 20 years, says long- time instructor Linda Greszezysyn. Tai Chi has become a popular stress reliever for young married couples replacing the stigma of being "an old people's art " The problem is people tend to become frustrated with the slow, methodical style, she says, and often expect too much too soon after start- ing their training. One problem she's always had, she says, is poor concentration. but has measurably improved since studying Tai Chi. "This is a lifetime thing.- she says. -You have to be at it a long time to appreciate what its benefits really are. It's not like gymnastics or any other type of sport. The more you do, the more you like it. There's a reason why it's been around so long" Mr. Hourahine's experience with both Karate and T:o Chi have given him additional insight into both dis- ciplines and. he say,. there are many similarities between them. All martial an, training, he argues, is an education that can enhance one's phy,tcal. mental and spiritual well-beinc. but requires discipline. Sid Ryan or Leah Casselman to like the Ontario gov- ernment's controversial dispute -resolution legisla- tion, also known as Bill 136. Mr. Wilson. president of the Ontario Federation of Labor. along with Mr. Ryan• president of the Canadian Union of Public Employees and Ms. Casselman• president of the Ontario Public Service Employees Union, have little use for the bill. which was introduced in the legislature on June 3 and is slated for implementation by Jan. 1. 1998. The reason the labor leaders are upset, and have planned illegal strike action for this fall if the bill is not withdrawn, is because it would allow an arbitrator, at the request of one of the two bargain- ing parties (the government and teachers, munici- pal employees or hospital workers) to make a judgment call based on what Mr. Wilson calls. "an employer's ability to pay" Labor leaders expect this will mean low -ball deals for their members as the Harris government tries to cut back on the hard-won rights and wages earned by public -sector unions over the past 50 years. Such reasoning is expected. No labor leader worth his salt or. worth the votes of his member- ship, would sit back without criticizing the bill. But, there's another side to the story. The hill is meant to be a temporary measure to assist the government in its complicated exercise of mergers and amalgamations involving munici- palities. school boards and hospitals. New. stan- dardized contracts and wage rates will have to be negotiated in newly merged municipalities, school districts and hospitals. It will be tough sledding on both sides of the negotiating table. However, it's part of a democratically elected government's plan to save taxpayers' money and to make the province's public sector operate in a more'efficient manner. iI's short-term pain for long-term gain for all Ontarians and it's needed. We're concerned that. despite her invitation to discuss the bill. Labor Minister Elizabeth Witmer has been rebuffed by Mr Wilson. As the megacity legislation was altered, so too could some sections of Bill 136 be changed if Mr. Wilson showed an intent to talk. But he won't. Come the fall, we're hopeful school children, hospital patients and all of us who use municipal services won't be hurt because public-service unioris won't deal with the bill. Yes. I say teens should not loiter to malls, parking lots, etc. Young adults have so much more w offer their communities and themselves. These are the best years of their lives and we as parents and communities are allowing them to waste it, just loitering around pushing the envelope, just to see how far they can go. The possibilities are endless if only someone made an effort to explore them instead of just complaining. 1 believe we reed to instill in our kids their incred- ible value and potential, am only to us, but to the communi- ties we live in. Government d(xsn't owe us a good life and interesting things to do. Our lives are what we make of them. I think kids are just looking for something to belong to. To be pan of something larg- er than themselves, to tit in somewhere at a time in their lives when perhaps they feel like they don't fit in anywhere else. Crime rate rise a sign of the times One week after a priest suf- fered a fat lip during a struggle with a thief who stole Sunday mass collections from an Oshawa church comes the release of Durham Regional Police statistics showing a 12 per cent rise in vio- lent crime in 1997. Heaven help us. While recent stats show crime is actually declining in most com- munities across Canada, the num- bers paint a different picture here in Durham. Last year, for example. crimes against persons - assaults, sexual assaults, robberies, attempted murders and murders - crept up 1.5 per cent from the previous year. More noteworthy are figures available for the first half of 1997• which show a steep 12 per cent increase in violent crime. According to Durham Regional Police• there has been a 13 per cent rise in assaults. a 100 per cent increase in attempted mur- ders (up to six from three), 13 per cent rise in weapons offences and - most disturbing for front-line law enforcers - a 62 per ecru jump in assaults against police officers. Sergeant Jim Grimley. spokesman for the police force, optimistically said of the year's first-half crime stats: "You can only hope this is not a trend we will follow throughout the year and it will taper off." Don't expect that to happen. In fact, common sense says as the population of Ontario's fastest- growing community continues to climb rapidly - by 12 per cent over the past five years, for exam- ple - Durham Region residents should start getting used to higher crime rates. They come from the Oshawa area. although a fair number attended from Courtice and Bowmanville as the school boards in Clarington don't offer summer school, Ms. Grdovic says. "Their board provides the buses for their own kid, to come here:' she says. adding all other students are responsible for their transportation. Eastdale had about 40 teachers plus the principal and two vice -prin- cipals. The separate board had a total of roughly 1,500 summer school stu- dents, with between 40 to 45 teach- ers. "It's a little larger than we had thought we were going to get:' Mr. Fitzgibbon says of enrolment. Four nights a week, two youth drop-in centres run by the Ajax parks and recreation department give teens a place to go in the evenings, to do what they want. Operated out of Westney Heights and Lakeside Public Schools, the cen- tres are for youths 13 io 17 years of age and are open from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. Mondays to Thursdays until Aug. 21. Tracy McMurray of the parks and recreation department says the centre in Westney Heights Public School is the busiest, possibly because the Town operates karate classes in the gym at Lakeside three nights a week. On any given night, about 50 teens. mostly buys, are playing haskcthall. Ms. McMurray says. "They like the gym because they're inside, out of the sun and away from bugs," she adds. "It's been fairly suc- cessful •' Youths were given the chance to choose an activity and they started playing basketball, she says. Also, news of the centres has "real- ly been word of mouth:' Funding for the two centres came in the form of a $3,000 grant from the Ajax Optimist Club. "There was no money in the Town budget" for the centres, she notes. One of the reasons for the centres is "residents' concern about vandalism in the parks:' Ms. McMurray says. Drop-in visitor Kevin Browne, says, "It keeps me out of trouble. In this environment, there's no prob- lems" The 17 -year-old Pickering High School student has been coming every day since it opened, to play basketball. "It's hexer than outside. It gets hot and you couldn't play too long:' Kevin says. "W'e're all friends. "They corse in, play ball and sort it out for themselves. At 9:30, the staff says go home and they do. There are no arguments and no hassles. "A lot are glad to have a place to play. They don't get hassled. There are rules, but as long as they're having a good time. they can play." Ms. McMurray says. At Westney Heights, the gym has been divided into two, with the older teens on one side and the younger kids on the other. Ms. McM1Lirray says the older teens put string nets up on the rims. Erich Roberts, 12, likes to "practise playing basketball, so 1 come here" He's been there every day since the centre opened and likes it. "I see my friends and 1 can practice:' Erich says. Jesse Forte. 12, says if he didn't come to the centre, "1'd probably be at home watching TV." Kevin Murray. 14, a Montreal resi- dent visiting family in Ajax until mid- August, comes with friends and cousins. "If 1 don't come here. 1 have noth- ing to do. I like this hccause it keeps kids off the streets. I don't know what JA be doing," he says. Thomas Johnson, 13, comes because "all my friends are here and there's basketball here and there are girls" Two girls who are usually at the Westney Heights centre are friends April Winter and Porsha Williams. R, R EN S The silver at the world youth regatta was the first medal for Canada at the meet since 1998. Ironically, fellow Pickering resident and 1996 Olympian Rod Davies won the gold medal for Canada that year. Luttmer admitted the silver medal was tinged with a trickle of disappointment, although he was nonetheless pleased with the accomplishment. The Pickering sailor led the pack after the first seven races, but slipped to second overall after an IIth-place finish in last Friday's only race. In that race, he was forced to do penalty turns after Sanchez lodged a complaint for interference. Even with the IIth-place finish, Luttmer could have regrouped to achieve the gold medal with a good result in the final race on Saturday. However, light winds and other delays caused the final race to be cancelled. "it was sort of upsetting, of course. But. I was so close to first place, so I was a little upset. 1 would have liked to have had a chance to take it away from him (the gold medal from Wallberg), but that's part of sailing. Weird things happen sometimes;' says Luttmer. in an interview with the News Advertiser ruesday morning. Luttmer explains the light winds made the sailing more difficult for him. " I practised a lot for light air and I was able to hang in there" The youth worlds in Japan represented Luttmer's second trip to a major international competition. At age 14, he took part in the Optimist Dinghy Class World Championships in the 15 -and -under division where he fin- ished well back in 1601h place. The silver medal at worlds represented yet another major accomplishment for Luttmer in the laser class this summer. Last month, he captured the youth sailing crown at the CYA/Highliner Canadian Youth Sailing Championships in Lunenburg, Nova Scotia. where he defeated the top sailors with an incredible week of sailing which left him well ahead of the pack. Luttmer credits some of his success on the water this year to training with world and Olympic laser -class champion Robert Scheidt of Brazil, who was able to pass on some of his extensive sailing knowledge. Next up for Luttmer is the National Qualifier Regatta at Kingston later this month. There, he'll attempt to qualify as a member of the Canadian national sailing team and will become a carded athlete and will receive government funding toward training expenses.
