"They could have just as easily not

According to Mr. Shaw, the level
of tritium found in the groundwater in
one of the test wells near a heavy
water upgrading plant was about
700,000 becquerels per litre. The
acceptable limit for drinking water is
7,000 becquerels per litre.
While that number isn't surprising

is not normal to have those levels in

The ministry is concerned about

"It's not posing a health risk, but that
doesn't negate the fact that it should-

Citizens can become
partners in fight
against crime
The statistics are nothing short of shocking.
While the Canadian Centre for Justice Statistics
released information earlier this week showing a
clear decline in the incidence of crime in the coun-
tr,,. Durham's own survey shows the opposite.
According to Durham Regional Police, a 12 -per
cent increase in crimes against persons — which
include assault, sexual assault, robbery. attempted
murder and murder — has been recorded thus far
in 1997. In that time there were 2?00 violent acts,
compared to 1,971 through the same period last
year.
Clearly, police cannot continue to fight a bur-
geoning criminal element with fewer resources
and without a proportionate increase in patrol offi-
cers.
Residents in Durham Region have two options.
They can file the information and do nothing, or
they can take action and become partners in the
fight against crime.
How"
Join or start a 'neighborhood Watch program in
your neighborhood. Join or start a Block Parents
program if one doesn't exist. Get to know the peo-
ple in charge of your local police division and
those who patrol the streets in your community.
Be more aware of who is familiar to you and
who isn't. Pay attention to things that seem suspi-
cious and follow up with a neighbor, friend or
Police officer.
Tape the Durham Region Crime Stoppers phone
number alongside other important numbers in
your home phone address book.
These simple things are tasks we can all under-
take with little effort. And by participating in the
ongoing fight against crime, we foster the creation
of safer communities.
By taking responsibility not just for ourselves,
but for our friends and neighbors, we can reduce
the incidence of crime.
We must never intervene directly in the com-
mission of a crime, but neither must we turn a
blind eye to it.
Be knowledgeable, be careful, but be aware.
Perhaps if we all take just a little more respon-
sibility, we can reduce — or even eliminate —
the rising crime trend police are seeing here at
home.

Why the
panic over
nuclear plant
metal
emissions?
To the editor:
I find it irresponsible journal-
ism to create panic among the
population over Ontario Hydro
dumping metals into Lake
Ontario.
Please understand that every
heat exchanger that uses lake
water for cooling does wear
because of erosion and corro-
sion and these microscopic
metal alloy particles are being
carried with the cooling water to
the lake where they will settle
on the bottom.
Therefore, not just Ontario
Hydro but all industries like
steel companies, refineries,
chemical plants, other light
industries, apartment buildings
and ships that use lake water to
cool their processes are also
depositing microscopic metal
particles in the lake.
So what is wrong with this?
There are no emission limits on
these metals. Only mercury and
lead have limits set. So, how can
anybody accuse Ontario Hydro
of breaking the law?
The copper piping in our
houses also wears off with time
and these metal particles will
find their way to the lake
through the sewage treatment
plant.
Why this panic? What are
the consequences supposed to
be?
This is nothing but irrespon-
sible journalism to sell newspa-
pers and waste taxpayers'
money on useless probes and
create jobs for the people con-
ducting these probes.
It is my belief that editors
have a responsibility to ensure
the insinuated health problems
can actually exist before one
prints such fallacies.

Home alone
With apologies to Charles Dickens, it was the
best of times, it was the worst of times.
That famous opening from the Dickens' clas-
sic A Tale of Two Cities struck me Tuesday as I
waded through the chocolate bar and candy
wrappers that had piled shin deep on my living.
room floor.
Grabbing a slightly used paper towel, I wipe
a smear of grease (pizza, I think) from the
screen, searched amid the dirty dishes clamorin
for space on the coffee table until I found t
remote control, and sat down for one final night,:"
of slovenly male leisure.
My family, you see, was returning home afigh. .
spending three weeks in cottage country. Tbk
was my last night alone and I would enjoy it. .' .
I missed my wife and children terribly when +,
they were away. But the appeal of being free b
cat what I wanted, sleep when I wanted, and
leave the seat up when I wanted was, well, intox-
icating.
Not once in three weeks did I say, 'Stay off the
road"
I didn't have to be reminded to take out t11e
garbage, which was great, because I blissfully ,y
forgot.
I didn't have to turn the dishwasher on eves j
once. ;
1 only did one load of laundry and managed
stretch the task out over two days. s.
In that sense, it was the best of times. It tc
me back to an era when the biggest issue be,
me was what I'd be doing on Friday night.
It was the best of times because I didn't f
one shred of guilt about having to corre
Connor's behavior — again.
It was the best of times because I had the
all to myself and could lie diagonally withou
touching anything.
But, it was the worst of times, too.
It was the worst of times because I had the bed
all to myself and could lie without touching any-
thing.
It was the worst of times because I didn't get
to kiss my children goodnight. The only stories
I'd read were in the newspaper.
It was the worst of times because there was
nobody to check on when I heard a sound in the
middle of the night.
I missed my family when they were away. But
they're back now.
I'm correcting behavior again, changing dia-
pers, taking out the garbage and fighting for bed
covers.
Those are the best times.

Durham business helps
summer computer camp click
BY JACQUIE MCINNES
SPECIAL TO THE NEWS ADVERTISER
When it comes to sending kids to camp, it's
easy to open your wallet a little wider. That's
what a number of Durham businesses have
demonstrated with donations of goods, dis-
counts and even money for the Durham Board
of Education's computer camp.
Five one-week programs for children who
would not otherwise be able to afford a trip to
camp were made possible after technology
resource officer John Briggs applied for and
received a grant to employ recent university,
college and high school graduates to run the
information, science and entrepreneurship
camp. Approximately 25 different students each
week attend locations scattered throughout the
region.
The grant gave the board enough funding to
hire a program co-ordinator and five coun-
selors, explains Mr. Briggs.
Unfortunately, it didn't cover other operating
costs such as extra activities and a lunch pro-
gram. That meant fund-raising became the
number -one priority.
"There has been a mixed response;' admits
Mr. Briggs. "We didn't have knowledge of the
grant until late in the spring so there was no
previous opportunity for fund-raising. We tried
to contact agencies to get funds but, the short
time period made it difficult. Many of them
plan a year in advance"
Despite the short notice, a number of com-
munity businesses did come through to help the
fledgling program.
Donations to date have included giveaways
for the kids such as passes to local amusement
centres, compact discs, mouse pads and books.
Pizza has been donated for the Friday Pizza
Days, materials have been provided at whole-
sale for projects and perhaps most importantly,
some money has been raised to help offset some
of the costs.
The camp is a mix of fun and learning, says
Sarah Wilson, the camp's co-ordinator. With the
assistance of counselor and "computer whiz"
Jason Armstrong — who assisted students last
year at the board's design and technology cen-
tre during his final year of high school — the
campers design camp logos, write stories and
create designs for rockets they build when not
at the computer.
The rockets built out of paper and cork
screws (donated by local wineries) contain a
mini- motor that makes launch day a real blast
when the kids get to see whose team has the
fastest and highest flyer. "We're doing a lot of
teamwork;' says Ms. Wilson. "It's kind of
rough the first day because the kids don't know
each other but, by the end of the week, they're
really working together."
The camp ran its first two weeks in Oshawa
at Lake Vista Public School and Mary Street
Community School then moved up to Beaver-
ton for the third week.
It is currently being held at Bayview Heights
in Pickering and then continues at Duffin's Bay
in Ajax before wrapping up at St. Paul's in
Whitby. With or without the grant, the plan is to
make the program a ye;rlv project. "We're
hopeful now that our program is in place and
we have an idea what we want to do that we will
be able to continue it," says Mr. Briggs. He adds
that fund-raising for next summer will begin
early. "It's obviously a worthwhile venture."
Donations of all kinds are still most wel-
come from anyone wishing to contribute to the
camp's fund-raising efforts. Call 666-550), ext.
5293 for more information or to arrange a dona-
tion.

School board ref orm
Durham education committee
won't appeal distribution decision
The Local Education Improve-
ment Committee (LEIC) for the pub-
lic school board in Durham Region
has decided not to appeal trustee dis-
tribution for the upcoming
November municipal elec-
tions.
At a meeting last Tues-
day evening, the LEIC —
set up by Durham Board of
Education at the direction
of the Province — voted
against appealing the final
report on distribution
issued by the clerks of
Oshawa. Whitby and Pick-
ering.
The clerks determined
there will he three trustees
in Oshawa. two each in
Pickering. Ajax and Whitby
and one in Scugog. while
Uxbridge and Brock will share one
trustee.
LEIC chairman and Brock trustee
Bill Fairburn had asked the commit-
tee to appeal the decision because it
was taking direct representation
away from his municipality.
Brock, Uxbridge and
Scugog have each had
their own trustee represen-
tative on the board until
now.
Mr. Fairburn is disap-
pointed in the LEIC's
decision, adding, "its my
duty to protect my people
in every appropriate way,
every legal way. This com-
mittee is allowed to
appeal. It chose not to."
Other trustees on the
committee said the LEIC
and board have struggled
with the issue of represen-
tation for each municipali-
ty versus representation by popula-
tion but could not reach a consensus,
leaving the clerks with no recom-

Schedlich.
Meanwhile, Oshawa, Uxbridge
and Brock councils have said they
will appeal the final report of the
clerks, who were required to deter-
mine distribution of trustees by the
Province under education reform
legislation.

Volkert van Beusekom, left, and Championships in Kingston.
Neil Weber, will represent Canada Competition begins Monday and
at the Mirror Class World Sailing continues through to Friday.
Local men hope wind
Q`
in their sails at worlds
By AL Rtv=
JPOICTS REPOKrER
PICKERING — Two Pickering
sailors are saying 'Let it blow, let it
blow, let it blow' when they begin their
quest against the world's best at the
Mirror Class World Sailing
Championships in Kingston, beginning
Monday, Aug. 4.
Volkert van Beusekom, 24, and part-
ner Neil Weber, 24, will be one of
Canada's representative crews at the
worlds which will attract sailors from
Australia, Great Britain, Ireland, Japan,
South Africa , Sweden. Canada and the
U.S. to Kingston's Portsmouth Olympic
Harbor. One hundred and thirty entries
will take part ir the prestigious 10 -race
event which concludes on Friday, Aug.
8.
Van Beusekom believes windy con-
ditions, which are the norm for Kingston
harbor at this time of year, should play
into his hands as both he and Weber are
at their best in gusty conditions.
"There are hundreds of different fac-
tors that you have to face;' explains van
Beusekom, who's been sailing since age
six. "Last year (while racing in
Kingston) the winds were very heavy
and we're prepared for that. If we get
heavy winds like they did last year we
have a very good chance to do well"
By doing well, van Beusekom means
a top -30 finish against the best mirror
dinghy crews in the world would be
considered a success. "rhat would be
great," he says.
In addition to their experience as
sailors, van Beusekom says their famil-
iarity with each other in the boat should
bode well for them at the worlds.
"I think after all these years of sailing
together, we pretty much know what
each other is doing. When I change
course, Neil knows what to do. I've
sailed with other crews when he could-
n't make it and there's a big difference,"
he says.
Van Beusekom is no stranger to
world competition. He competed at the
worlds in 1991 in Hoorn. Holland, near
Amsterdam. There, he finished in the
middle of the pack, placing 36th out of
64 boats.
Last year, van Beusekom and Weber
sailed in 15 weekend regattas which
were part of the ranking series to gain
entry to the world championships.
Although he admits the duo "didn't do
too well" in the races, they were good
enough to crack the top 18 Moats in
Canada to assure themselves a spot in
the mirror -class worlds.
"We had no problem qualifying
notes van Beusekom. 'All we cared
about was getting a place in the worlds.
We weren't too concerned about where
we placed:'
Van Beusekom and Weber will be
aboard the boat Gypsy for the worlds.
The mirror dinghy, built by his father in
1981, is crafted of wood and fibreglass
to make it lightweight at only 109
pounds without the rigging. The inex-
pensive mirror dinghy, which originated
in England in the early 1970s, has three
sails — a main sail, a jib (forward sail)
and a spinnaker for downwind sailing.
Both sailors agree that sailing a mir-
ror dinghy is a challenge to get the boat
perform under numerous types of wind
conditions which can change at a
moment's notice.
"What I like about sailing is the chal-
lenge to get your boat to move. It takes
some skill and some thought. You have
to know how to play with the wind",
says van Beusekom.
Adds Weber, "For me, it's the excite-
ment. When in heavy winds, both of us
are on the high side of the boat to keep
it flat. It lets you put your skills up
against every else"
Following the worlds, van Beusekom
— a draftsman for a Whitby company
— and Weber — the manager of com-
puter operations for a local firm — will
race at two or three more regattas this
summer, including the provincial cham-
pionships at Sibell Point on Lake
Simcoe.
Area gymnasts gym -dandy at meet
A pair of gymnasts from an Oshawa -based club fared well at
two recent competitions.
Twelve gymnasts from the Durham Whir Kids competed at
the International Freedom Festival Invitationals in Windsor
recently.
Isaac Matsushita of Ajax finished eighth overall in the
provincial 9-1 1 -year-old category. He placed second on rings,
fourth on floor exercises, fifth on parallel bars, seventh on high
bar, ninth on vault and 1 I th on the pommel horse.
The Whiz kids swept the first through sixth-place finishes on
parallel bars at the Windsor meet.
Meanwhile, six members of the Durham Whiz Kids took
part in a recreational meet in Vaughan recently.
Scott Holtby of Pickering competed in the cadet 'B' nine-
year-old category. He placed eighth overall with a first on par-
allel bars, fourth on floor, sixth on rings and high bar and 10th
on vault.
