A two-year-old Russian
boy will be reunited with his
adoptive Canadian parents
tonight thanks in part to the
effcxts of a Pickering family
and other local residents.
Benjamin Caldecott is due
to arrive at Pearson Interna-
tional Airport tonight with his
father, Randy Caldecott, to be
met by his mother Joanne and
the Alford family, Mike,
Colleen and six-year-old
Alexey, of Pickering.
"They're very happy: ' says
Mr. Alford of the Walkerton
family which ran into diffi-
culties with Canadian immi-
gration authorities in their

attempts to bring Benjamin
home in June.
Benjamin was adopted
from a Russian orphanage but
the Caldecotts could not get a
visa for him since he has been
diagnosed as developmental-
ly delayed. Canadian immi-
gration requires children to
be healthy to the extent they
won't be a burden on health
or social services once in
Canada.
Having gone through the
same thing themselves when
they adopted Alexey from a
Russian orphanage, the
Alfords swung into action,

A Pickering young offenders centre
escapee wanted for a string of break-
ins is back in custody — but several
high-powered guns he's suspected of
stealing still remain on the street.
"We're certainly glad to have him in
custody but we would like to get those
weapons off the streets. There is a very
good chance they have been sold,"
Sergeant Jim Grimley said yesterday.
Following a break-in two weeks
ago, an arrest warrant was issued for
Glen Ville Decaries, 18, who disap-
peared one day after he was transferred
to the Durhamdale youth facility in
Pickering.
Police came close to catching the
wanted teen early Saturday after a
chase of a stolen car in Oshawa ended
with four occupants bolting from the
vehicle.
Two were nabbed at the scene while
a third was arrested on drug-related
offences a short time later, Sgt. Grim-
ley said. The fourth — believed to have
been Mr. Decaries — escaped capture.
The hunt for the youth, feared by
police to be in possession of the
firearms, ended Sunday evening when
plainclothes officers spotted a suspi-
cious vehicle in Oshawa's south end.
The driver fled the car after parking in
a driveway.
Mr. Decaries was nabbed in a near-
by residential backyard after a five -

Up and over
Adam Davio can't wait for the new youth park to be
built in Pickering, so he practised his skateboarding
skills instead on the steps of the Pickering Recreation
Complex. The youth park will offer a host of facilities
for Pickering youth, including a skateboard area.
Police seek
help in solving
truck hijacking
Crime Stoppers and Durham Region-
al Police are asking for your help in
solving a hijacking that occurred in
Newcastle on June 3.
Around 2:30 am., the victim stopped
his tractor trailer at the Esso Service
Centre on the westbound Hwy. 401. As
the victim checked his vehicle, he was
approached by two masked men armed
with a handgun. The victim was forced
inside the bunk of the truck, where his
hands and feet were bound. The truck
was driven by one of the hijackers to an
unknown location, where approximately
$148,000 worth of men's clothing was
unloaded. The hijackers then drove the
victim to a parking lot at Dixie Road and
Finch Avenue in Pickering, where he
sounded the air hone until he was locat-
ed and freed by police. The victim was
uninjured. The suspects are described as
white males, in their 30s. They were
each wearing casual clothing and masks.
Crime Stoppers will pay a cash
reward for any information that leads to
an arrestt. Callers never have to give
their names or testify in court. Crime

ington U.S. Marine shotgun,
a semi-automatic AR -15
military assault rifle with
scope and tripod, a STYR
assault rifle with bayonet
and a Mcxlel 500 Mossbird
rifle.
In addition to the
weapons, thousands of
rounds of .223 calibre and
seven millimetre ammuni-
tion were also stolen.
Sgt. Grimley said Mr.
Decaries is "co-operating"
with investigators in the
attempt to locate the ammu-
nition -- police were hoping
to obtain search warrants
yesterday -- but the where-
abouts of the firearms is
unknown.
"It's our belief they have
been sold;" he said.
Mr. Decaries faces
numerous charges for break -
and -enter, theft and weapons
offences as well as for being
unlawfully at large.
Super fund-raiser planned
for Pickering Boy Scouts
PICKERING — Gillette Canada Inc. and the Picker-
ing SuperCentre are hosting a fund-raising day Saturday.
Aug. 9 for the Highland Park Boy Scout troop.
Gillette Day will include raffles, contests and all sorts
of giveaways. As well, hot dogs and pop will be avail-
able.
The Boy Scouts of Canada pride themselves on devel-
oping youths into responsible young men with respect
for nature as well as other people, while providing them
with activities that are both fun and educational.

Staying on the safe side
Safety -conscious students frorn Ajax and
Pickering were among those who partici-
pated in the 28th annual Canadian Auto-
mobile Association Central Ontario School
Safety Patrol Officers' Training Camp,
held recently at Camp Samac in Oshawa.
Chosen by their schools to be captains of
next fall's safety patrols, the 160 new
recruits spent the week learning how to
protect their fellow students at school
crossings and on school buses. Here,
Oshawa Fire Prevention Officer Steve
Meringer demonstrates to the patrollers
how a fire will spread by using the wrong
fire extinguisher to put out a flammable
liquid fire. Officers from a host of police
associations took part, as did St. John
Ambulance.
Youth Centre volleyball tourney July 30
PICKERING — A volleyball partnership with the Canadian Cancer
tournament organized by The Youth Society and Town of Pickering, is

Durham clerks finalize
report, Pickering to get two
public school board trustees
PICKERING — Pickering will
have just two trustees on the new
Durham district public school board,
to be elected this November.
The clerks of Oshawa, Pickering
and Whitby have confirmed their
preliminary report which gives Ajax,
Whitby and Pickering two trustees
each and Oshawa three trustees on
the new I I -member board. Pickering
currently has three trustees on
Durham Board of Education.
The final report, issued Monday,
also sets aside one trustee for all of
Scugog with Uxbridge and Brock
sharing one trustee.
In its preliminary report, the
clerks suggested the three northern
municipalities share the two trustees
but Durham Board of Education's
Local Education Improvement Com-
mittee (LEIC) recommended one
trustee should be dedicated to Scu-
gog which has more public board
supporters of the three municipah-
ties.
Ajax and Whitby trustee rcpre-
sentation would remain the same
while Oshawa loses two trustees.
Trustees will be elected at large in
all municipalities except for Ajax
where they will continue to be elect-
ed by wards.
The LEIC will meet tonight at 5
p.m. at the board's education centre
on Taunton Road in Whitby to dis-
cuss the final report, says committee
chairman Bill Fairburn, a trustee
from Brock.
"The LEIC has the power of
appeal;' he says. "it may or may not
want to exercise that right"
He has already indicated he
would like the committee to appeal
the report.
Currently the three northern
municipalities each have a trustee
representing them on the board.
But the municipal clerks took one
of those positions away in order to
maintain Ajax's representation at
two trustees.
Brock council has already voted
to appeal the final report while
Uxbridge council meets tonight to
consider the matter.
Oshawa council was to consider
whether to appeal the report at a
meeting Monday night, after the
News Advertiser's deadline.
Municipal councils, the school
board and LEIC have 10 days to
appeal the clerks' report to the
provincial Education Improvement
Commission which then has 14 days
to deal with appeals.
The downsizing of school boards
and the process of trustee distribu-
tion has been set out by the Province
in its education reforms.

Your money not
worth your life
No matter how many times police keep warn-
ing against it, people continue to risk their
money for their life.
Take three incidents in Durham in the recent
past for example:
July 17: A 17 -year-old Pickering ice cream
vendor accosted near a ball diamond refuses to
hand over money to another teenage male who
demands cash. After the suspect picks up a beer
bottle, smashes it on the bleachers and threatens
the teen with what is now a deadly weapon, the
vendor strikes the thug with his fanny pack, chas-
ing the would-be robber away.
July 17: A 13 -year-old Ajax ice cream vendor
is swarmed by a group of teens who demand free
treats. When he won't give up the goodies, a
youth pulls a knife and tells him -I'll cut you in
pieces."
When police show up, most of the gang flees
but officers arrest a 14 -year-old girl on charges
of robbery and possession of a dangerous
weapon.
July 23: A 35 -year-old Whitby variety store
clerk won't give cash and cigarettes to bandits
who threaten to stab him and slug him if he does-
n't comply with their demands. Two 15 -year-old
boys are arrested after a brief scuffle in which an
officer responding to the holdup report is
allegedly punched, a sign the robbers are willing
to resort to violence.
In all cases, the victims refused to give in to
the criminals' demands. Why? To hang on to
their employers' money or merchandise in the
belief they had to in order to hang onto their
jobs? In fact, the ice cream vendor involved in
the Ajax robbery attempt was fired because, his
employer claims, he ventured onto the scene of
a pending fight, thus putting himself at risk on
the job, thereby violating company policy.
We ask again why did these three merchants
and why do countless other people resist rob-
beries? So they'll be hailed as heroes? They're
fortunate that they're not being remembered as
dead heroes. In all cases, violence was used or
threatened.
No amount of money or merchandise is worth
risking your safety. If you're ever faced with a
situation where your money or your life is at risk,
the choice should be perfectly clear.

Re: Merchants laud crack-
down on rowdy teens, News
Advertiser, July 25.
1 remember when 1 was a
rowdy teen, however since I
turned legal age, I can now
loiter freely and be consid-
ered a customer.
It has always surprised me
how people are so quick to
send out cops to physically
"clean up" and "crackdown"
on loitering teens. A large
group of youths initiates an
immediate reaction from
everyone around. Yet, no one
stops to think, why are they
hanging around parking lots
in the first place? Simple:
They have nowhere to go and
nothing to do.
Towns, such as Pickering,
are built for seniors and fami-
lies with small children. For
those in their teenage years,
Pickering becomes a waste-
land of middle-class, subur-
ban houses and streets with
nothing to offer teens but a
mall, a recreation centre that
caters to mostly adults and
one movieplex that is usually
sold out an hour before the 7
p.m. show. The skate park
has been one of Pickering's
only attempts at something
geared toward youths that
does not involve being
enrolled in a program or
require a large amount of
money.
Teens are an untapped
market in suburbia. If the
town and merchants want
teens to stop hanging around
in parking lots all night, the
town should look into devel-
opers and people interested in
building more all -ages pool
halls, clubs, late-night coffee
shops, small stores and small
halls where teens can set up
shows with local bands, that
are easily accessible and not

System is failing Jose
Readers who caught last Wednesday's report in
this paper on Josd Arsenault and her family's fight
to bring her home were probably appalled such a
situation could arise.
Members of the family drive about six hours
each way every weekend to a rehabilitation hospi-
tal in Erie, Pennsylvania to visit Jose, who suffered
serious brain damage in a car accident in Pickering
four years ago at the age of 16.
First they had to fight OHIP to get their daugh-
ter to Erie because there was no hospital here able
to deal with the type of brain injury she suffered.
Now they're afraid to let OHIP bring Jose back
because the government -mandated auto insurance
policy she is covered by does not provide enough
money to pay for her care at home. They turned to
the home care option after discovering local chron-
ic care institutions, hamstrung by government
funding limitations, could do little more than ware-
house Jose.
Most of us probably believe that if we or a loved
one were seriously disabled in a car accident some
combination of private insurance and public health
care would look after things for us. But as the
Arsenaults have discovered, that is not necessarily
the case when the disability is severe.
When we want to know why, we're told the gov-
ernment can't afford to spend so much on chronic
care — though it is promising to spend more in the
future as it reallocates health care expenditures —
and that government can't be paying for what
insurance companies should pay for. At the same
time we're told limits have to be placed on what
insurance can provide in order to keep rates at a
reasonable level.
The theory is all very nice but it still leaves peo-
ple like Josd without an adequate quality of care
and life. As demonstrated by the response of the
local community to the Arsenaults' plight, this sit-
uation is clearly not acceptable to the public.
What's also clear is that it's time for the
Province to take some action. Provincially -mandat-
ed auto insurance coverage has to be beefed up to
provide more money for those suffering seriously
disabling injuries, and funding to chronic care
facilities has to be increased to provide patients
with more than just a place to lie. Or, the Province
could decide to leave the current insurance and
chronic care funding systems as they are but make
provisions to consistently step in with supplemen-
tary dollars to provide care for the catastrophical-
ly -injured, insured or not.
Whatever route the Province will decide to take,
the quality of care disabled people receive should-
n't depend on the strength and willingness of their
families to fight the system.

General Motors closes in on
250,000 auto sales for '97
Low interest rates,
wide selection helps
push sales higher for
automaker
General Motors of Canada is clos-
ing in on a quarter -million sales for
the year, thanks to June totals of
43.629 new passenger car and light -
truck deliveries (up 11.5 per cent
from the 39.126 units delivered in
the same month last year).
Car sales of 25.960 represented
an increase of 9.5 per cent over June
1996, while truck sales of 17,669
were up 14.7 per cent.
Over the first half. GM car sales
are up 12.1 per cent over the first
half of '96 ( 131.610 versus 117,420,
respectively). while truck deliveries
increased 14.1 per cent (95,556 ver-
sus 82.762, respectively).
That adds up to 227,166 units
overall, a 12.9 per cent increase from
the 201.182 sold the first half of last
year.

president of marketing said. "the
combination of low interest rates and
a wide selection of feature -packed
vehicles should be the right ingredi-
ents to sustain continuing healthy
sales and leasing numbers of Gener-
al Motors of Canada dealers and
retailers"
Elsewhere in Durham Region.
BMA' Canada's best lune ever
pushed the German importer to its
best first half ever.
June 1997 sales of 864 represent-
ed a 15.5 per cent increase over its
June 1996 sales.
That pushed BMW sales to 3.838
over the first six months, a 33 -per
cent increase over the same period
last year.
BMW's flagship 7 Series topped
its 1996 sales numbers by 113 per
cent (up to 428 units) to lead the
way.
BMW's motorcycle division also
enjoyed a buoyant first half with its
246 sales representing an increase of
32 per cent over last year's numbers.
Chrysler's monthly passenger car
sales, meanwhile, dropped 6.2 per
cent from last June (8,394, down
from 8,948).
Although that pushed second
quarter totals up 5.2 per cent, it still
represented a first half decline of 0.3
per cent from last year (45,550,
down from 45, 704).

year, Volkswagen sales of
12,841 and Audi sales of
1,389 represented increases
of 10.0 and 53.1, respectively, and
pushed overall sales to 14,230, a
13.1 per cent increase over last
year's first-half total of 12,585.

PICKERING — The Pickering
Bank of Montreal squirt boys' rep soft-
ball team earned a berth for the first time
in three years in the Ontario champi-
onships in Willowdale next month after
the provincial qualifying tournament in
Napanee last weekend.
After losing its first game 1-0 to a
strong defensive Napanee club,
Pickering was faced with a must -win sit-
uation against Peterborough in order to
qualify for the provincials. The Bank of
Montreal squirts came through with a
close 1412 victory over Peterborough.
Pickering got on the board first with
two runs manufactured by hits and
aggressive base running by Drew
McCallum, Kiel McCallum and Anthony
Paradiso. Peterborough tied the score in
the second inning, but Pickering came
back with a run by Michael Fuller to take
the lead once more. Peterborough scored
nine nuns in the third inning to take a
commanding lead. The Pickering squirts
were unwilling to concede the game,
scoring three runs by Billy Keith,
Paradiso and Drew McCallum, but

game. Scoring runs for Pickering were
Tsatskas with three, Jeff MacFarlane

took the loss on the mound, striking out

In league play, Pickering continues to
lead the way with a mark of I 1 wins and

Pickering whitewashed Oshawa 23-0
recently. Magee bashed a grand slam
home run, while MacLeod also hit a
round -tripper. McLeod, Paradiso and
Keith all scored four times, while Magee,
Fuller, Tsatskas, Drew McCallum and
Kiel McCallum each crossed the plate
twice. MacLeod was the winning pitch-
er, registering eight strikeouts.

PRODUCTION SUPERVISORY POSITIONS
Supervisory positions are available for highly motivated individuals to
join a unionized manufacturing automotive component plant. Our facility
is a three shift operation utilizing flexible manufacturing systems and
computer integrated manufacturing and management information sys-
tems.
As a Production Supervisor you will be responsible for the effective use
of personnel, material and equipment as it relates to the component
manufacturing operation. You will be required to meet production
schedules, maintain quality and administer safety and labour relations
practices. You will also be responsible to implement synchronous manu-
facturing strategies in order to eliminate waste and improve efficiencies.
As a Production Supervisor you will have experience in automotive
components, stamping, plastics, Reaction Injection Moulding (RIM), or
paint operations. Your College/University Degree or equivalent experi-
ence will complement your manufacturing experience and enhance your
ability to organize and solve problems. You will have demonstrated
leadership, interpersonal and communication skills. Together with other
supervisors, you will be part of a team supporting business plan objec-
ttves and maintaining the operation at a world class level.

WHITBY — The Lynde Shares
housing development will not be
altered by legislation to protect land
adjacent to Lynde Marsh, says a
spokesman for Durham Centre MPP
Jim Flaherty.
In a press release issued Friday. Mr.
Flaherty said he intends to introduce
legislation next month to designate the
marsh and surrounding areas within
500 metres as a development -free
zone.
"Despite the negative impact of
previously approved adjacent develop-
ment. we must act now to try to pre-
serve the marsh and protect it from
any further development;" Mr. Flaher-
ty said.
"This legislation is not about the
past or the present but about the
future;' he said. "The Lynde Marsh
has remained virtually untouched for
thousands of years ... let us see what we
can do to prevent further development
in the future"
Bill Noble. Mr. Flaherty's assistant.
says the intent of the legislation is not
to stop the Lynde Shores housing
development but is to "preserve the
land for conservation and education;'
adding "we want to ensure that in the
future there are still areas that aren't
developed"
The Town of Whitby approved a
452 -home development on the shores
of the marsh at a July 14 council meet-
ing. This project falls within Mr. Fla-
herty's proposed 500 -metre develop-
ment -free zone.
Whitby street
set to reopen
WHITBY — Months of taking
detours to travel through Whitby will
end this weekend.
"As of Friday, Aug. 1, in time for the
long weekend, all four lanes of Garden
Street will be open," says Public Works
director Wayne Hancock.
The street has been closed to traffic
since April 1996 when construction
began to widen the street and create an
overpass for a CP Rail line just north of
Dundas Street.
The $7 -million project, which was
funded by the Town, the Province, the
federal government and CP Rail, was
originally slated to open in October but
the date was moved up to the end of
July.
Mr. Hancock says the project, which
is finishing ahead of schedule, is also
finishing within budget.
However, while the street's four
lanes will be open for the weekend, traf-
fic will be restricted to one lane in each
direction from Tuesday, Aug. 5 until
Friday, Aug. 8.
Mr. Hancock says the lane restric-
tions are necessary to allow workers to
,complete some "minor landscaping and
clean-up work on either side of the
street."
Yet, he says when Garden Street
reopens the traffic hold-ups of days past
in the area will have been solved.
