weapons, disappeared from the
Durhamdale centre, an open custody
facility, on June 30, one day after he
was transferred there from a young
offenders' facility in Cobourg,
Sergeant Jim Grimley says.
Glen Ville Decaries has been
named on an arrest warrant for two
counts of break and enter, possession
of stolen property and theft over
$5,000 in connection with two break-
ins in Oshawa on July 2.
Mr. Decaries is considered by
police to be "armed and dangerous".
Sgt. Grimley said the suspect, who
was serving a sentence for burglary, is
now also wanted for the break-in July
11 to 14 at a Killarney Court resi-
dence, in which several rifles and shot-
guns and thousands of rounds of
ammunition were stolen.

PICKERING — A three-hour standoff
between heavily -armed Durham Regional Police
tactical support unit officers and a man wanted by
immigration authorities ended peacefully here
Thursday.
Durham Regional Police and the TSU were
tipped off the man being sought was at a Faylee
Crescent home, says Sergeant Jim Grimley.
The standoff followed a break-in at the same
residence the previous night, says Sgt. Grimley.
He reports the suspect is believed to have broken
in Wednesday evening, armed with a knife. When
police arrived, the suspect had fled.
On Thursday. police received a tip the man
had returned to the residence. When they arrived,

The firearms and ammunition were
legally owned and properly stored,
Sgt. Grimley says.
Police fear the guns could be used
to commit a violent crime. Mr.
Decaries "does have a history of vio-
lence and weapons so obviously we
are very concerned. (Whoever) has the
guns could sell them or keep them, but
the possibility of them being used for
illegal purposes still remains"
The suspect is black, 5'911, 155
pounds, with black hair, brown eyes, a
scar on his left cheek and tattoos of a
panther on his right arm and an Indian
head on his left arm.

to call police at 579-1520 or Crime
Stoppers at 436 -TIPS.

After a negotiator's attempts to speak with the
suspect were unsuccessful, TSU officers entered
and searched the home.
Police say the suspect was found hiding under
insulation in the attic where he was arrested and
taken into custody.
Twenty -five-year-old Coleridge Wong was
being sought under an Immigration Canada
detention order and was named on outstanding
police warrants.
He was charged by Durham Regional Police
with threatening death in connection with the
Wednesday night break-in.
He was to appear in court Friday morning.

Canadian Tire has been
a part of the Pickering family
for a long, long time
Seventy-five years ago, when Alfred and John Biles invested
$1,800 to buy Hamilton Tire and Garage Company Ltd., a
small garage and auto parts depot in Toronto, they could
never have imagined the return they would get on their
investment. That $1,800 laid the foundation for what is now

New garden is Len Cullen's latest dream come true

WHITBY— Fifty years ago a
young paperboy had a dream to
build a garden for the world to
admire and on Wednesday the lat-
est addition to that dream became
a reality.
Cullen Gardens and Miniature
Village hosted a double celebra-
tion recently to honor Len
Cullen's 50th yearin the garden-
ing business and the opening of
the Ontario Wild Flower Garden
and Bird Sanctuary.
"Cullen Gardens got started
because I had a dream;' says Mr.
Cullen, who landed a contract
with R.E. Edwards, builder of
Edwards Gardens. early in his
career.
"He was having so much fun;'
he says. "I thought if I ever get the
money I'm going to make a gar-
den and invite everybody to
come"
The wild flower garden has
been four years in the making.
"It's been a long process.
"'Ruere's such an emphasis on
natural things:' Mr. Cullen says.
"Not everybody loves mowed
lawns"
He says he was encouraged to
take on the project by nature pho-
tographer Erika Thimm.
"She's done all the work"
Ms. Thimm is the creative
mind behind the planning of the
garden and says while it was a
challenge to design she is "ecstat-
ic" with the results.
"For me it's wonderful every
time I see something popping up.
It's such a great idea to have this
here so visitors from all over the
world can come and see it'"
The emphasis in the garden is
on Ontario flora and the valley
setting, nestled among tall cedar
trees, and includes 155 species of
wildflowers, shrubs, grasses and
trees.
"It's going to be wonderful
eventually," says Oshawa's Phyl-

While Wednesday's celebra-
tion featured an inaugural tour of
the garden, family and friends
also had the opportunity to con-
gratulate its creator on his accom-
plishments.
Mr. Cullen's children paid trib-
ute to their father in a poem call-
ing him "50 years a dreamer...50
years an entrepreneur' and the
"quintessential gardener"

WHITBY — A walk
through the cedar grove that
is home to the Ontario Wild
Flower Garden and Bird
Sanctuary at Cullen Gardens
and Miniature Village is a
reminder of the untamed
beauty of nature.
The main trail in the gar-
den, which includes 155
species of wild flowers,
grasses and shrubs native to
Ontario, winds through a
canopy of trees next to a
small creek.
While the plants in the
woods are just beginning to
bloom, the gardens surround-
ing the pond in the centre of
the garden are already full of
color with trilliums, silver -
weed and green headed cone
flowers.
There are numerous bird
houses nestled among the
trees, several rustic benches
along the pathway.and a small
covered bridge overlooking
the pond which offers shade
to visitors.
However, if you're setting
out for a walk in the woods,
leave your high heels behind.
The pathway through the
gar -den is a wood chip trail.

it's good for your health.
Three cases of illness caused
by parasites from imported fruit
have been reported in the region
and there are likely more unre-
ported incidents, says Alex
Connor, manager of environ-
mental health for the Durham
Region health department.
A parasite known as
Cyclospora, which has been
found in some imported pro-
duce, particularly berries, is the
culprit and it only takes one to
cause some serious stomach
complaints including chronic
diarrhea, says Mr. Connor.
"It's really the luck of the
draw. You could have a basket
with one or two organisms in it
and if you're unlucky enough to
eat that one you're going to get
sick," he says. "The more you
eat, the more you're at risk"
While "really, really thor-
ough rinsing" of produce will
reduce your chances of picking
up the bug, there are no guaran-
tees. The prime culprits tend to
be fruits from South American
countries including Guatemala.
U.S. fruit is less suspect, but
should still be treated with care
and even locally grown produce
should always be rinsed before
eating, adds Mr. Connor.
"The message is, it is still
good to eat lots of fruits and
vegetables but do it wisely:' he
says. "At this time of the year,
what better time to eat locally?"
Another summer favorite,
melon has occasionally been
found to be contaminated with
salmonella on the skin. When
it's cut, the knife can transport
the organisms through to the
fruit. Again, a rinse and even a
scrub with a vegetable brush is
the best form of prevention.
Even in Ontario we have our
share of trouble -causing organ-
isms. Cottagers who swallow
lake water while swimming or
who rinse their food or brush
their teeth in unboiled lake and
creek water can also find them-
selves with a nasty case of
stomach upset. Kids investigat-
ing their local creeks or ponds
should be reminded to wash
their hands well before putting
them near their mouths.
If you have symptoms such
as constant bloating and gas or
diarrhea that don't subside after
a few days, Mr. Connor recom-
mends taking a stool sample to
your doctor for diagnosis.
While these ailments are cur-
able they require treatment.

do what they do best — help the people who
need help in Ajax and Pickering, he says.
Ms. Austin was chosen from the 96 people
who applied for the full-time professional
fund-raising position. She has managed corpo-
rate and employee campaigns and organized
special events for United Way campaigns in
Calgary and the Greater Toronto Area and has
operated her own marketing communications
and public relations firms for the last 10 years.

What do you get when you divide I 1 into seven''
In the case of the Durham Board of Education, you get a
lot of dissension.
Public school trustees have been floundering hopelessly
in trying to decide !pow to divide a new, 1 I -member board
among the board's seven municipalities. With direction
from the Province to pare down the numbers of elected
trustees, the board was told to form a committee and decide
how taxpayers will be represented by 1 I politicians.
But faced with a choice between representation by pop-
ulation or representation by municipality, the Local
Education Improvement Committee (LEIC) was unable to
come to consensus.
When a request to the Province to throw an extra trustee
into the equation was denied, the mathematical problem
was handed off to the municipal clerks of Pickering, Whitby
and Oshawa.
Now that the clerks have made a decision, trustees are
still complaining and LEIC chairman Bill Fairburn says
he'd like the committee to appeal the clerks' final report.
What nonsense.
If the LEIC was unable to come up with a plan of its own
and passed the buck to the clerks, why would it now object
to the blueprint drawn up by those same clerks:' It's a plan,
and it's better than the no -plan -at -all arrived at by the LEIC.
Further, board chairman Ruth Ann Schedlich predicts
the three clerks are going to take "flak" for their decision,
which gives Oshawa three trustees; Pickering, Ajax and
Whitby two each; and two trustees to be shared by the less -
populated Brock. Scugog and Uxbridge.
Trustees, perhaps, would like to think unhappy taxpay-
ers will blame the three municipal employees to whom the
local politicians shoved the task, but we don't think so.
When the elected trustees on the LEIC are unable to decide
what to do and delegate a political hot potato, they must
stand up and take responsibility for any complaints. They
are, after all, the people who failed at the task.
Over at the Durham Region Roman Catholic Separate
School Board camp, trustees have endorsed a plan by the
clerks that was recommended by the LEIC. While the LEIC
there admits some concerns with trustee distribution, there
is no talk of appealing or predicting who'll be taking the
blame.
There's an old adage that says if you want the job done
right, do it yourself. It seems to apply to the public board in
this case.

only true
democratic
process
To the editor:
Re: the June 27 News Advertiser
letter headlined 'Referendums let
politicians escape from decisions'.
Mr. Philip H. Walke's letter to the
editor that states "referendums pro-
duce irresponsible results" deserves
an immediate reply. I believe referen-
dums are the only true democratic
process that would allow those of us
who are not in power to force a gov-
ernment to put into effect laws that
the majority of Canadian citizens
would want to see in place.
I take offence to Mr. Walke imply-
ing that the average citizen does not
have the ability or intelligence to
effectively make a correct decision,
should there be a referendum regard-
ing a major issue affecting our coun-
try, its laws and policies.
My view of democracy is not
marking an X on a ballot every four
years and giving up my right to be
directly involved in decisions that
affect the future of my family, friends-
and
riends
and neighbors. Recent history has
shown that politicians will implement
what they want to see as policy and
not what the majority wants.
Remember Trudeau, Mulroney,
Peterson, Rae.
I personally believe it's about time
the citizens of this country be allowed
to vote directly on issues such as capi-
tal punishment, our immigration poli-
cies, the Young Offenders Act, etc.
and just as important how and where
our tax dollars are going to be spent.
During each municipal, provincial
and federal election, citizens should
be allowed to vote on the major issues
of concern and the elected govern-
ment should be obliged to implement
policies according to the results.
We need to establish a real democ-
ratic system where politicians are
elected to implement and manage the
will of the people.

Glenn Healy, the newest Toronto
Maple Leaf, has demonstrated you really
can go home again.
A back-up goaltender to Mike Richter
with the New York Rangers for the past
four seasons, Healy will make his home-
coming odyssey with the Leafs this sea-
son after the tree agent agreed earlier this
month to a three-year contract.
The former Pickering resident who
now lives in Ajax admits he was a diehard
Leaf fan while growing up in Bay Ridges
and playing for the Holy Redeemer
Church Hockey League in his early years
in hockey. Now, the 34 -year-old puck -
stopper will get his chance to live out a
childhood dream to don the blue and
white for real.
..It's a dream come true;' Healy was
quoted as saying after coming to Toronto,
which beat out Montreal. Vancouver and

other teawhich vied for his services.
More importantly, Healy will be
among his friends and family more often
while a Maple Leaf. In several off-season
interviews during his 13 -year NHLm
career, I found Healy was a hoetown
boy who never really left. He always
inquired about his beloved junior hockey
alma mater, the Pickering Panthers, and
was willing to assume a leadership role in
the community, handling a full slate of
charitable commitments each summer.
And, when he was a member of the 1994
Stanley Cup -winning Rangers, he gladly
put the Cup in the hands of as many
townsfolk as he could when he brought it
home for several days that summer.
Make no mistake, playing for the these Toronto Maple Leafs days is no
place for the faint of heart. However,
Healy has become accustomed to rising
to the occasion during his career. He
entered the NHL with the Los Angeles
Kings in the late '80s as a free agent after
completing an athletic scholarship at
Western Michigan University. He was
front and centre in the 1993 NHL play-
offs to lift the %" underdog New York
Islanders past the defending Stanley Cup
champion Pittsburgh Pengu ins that year.
The Leafs may not be the cream of the
NHL crop, Kut by bringing Healy into the
fold, they'll get someone who'll definite-
ly be an asset to the dub

Re -living hell,
Sexual abuse survivor sheds light on dark times

Through the eyes of most chil-
dren, the world is a wondrous, mag-
ical place filled with confusing but
intriguing things. Much of their
time is spent trying to make sense
of their environment, often finding
enjoyment in the most trivial mat-
ters.
There are a few children, howev-
er, who see the world differently. To
them, it's a terrifying place where
even people who ordinarily would
or should be a source of comfort or
familiarity are little more than
demons in disguise. For them,
childhood is dreadful and simply a
matter of survival.
"I have nightmares a lot and it's
hard to get close to anyone male:'
explains 15 -year-old Jackie Boddy,
who says she was robbed of her
childhood after being sexually
assaulted from two -and -a -half to

known to her family.
Jackie's mother, Sheila, recalls
the painful details of what her
eldest child went through as the
guilt, anger and shame began to sur-
face over the years.
"At one point she was very suici-
dal," says Ms. Boddy. "One night
she waited until I went to bed and
then set herself on fire", suffering
second- and third-degree burns to
her legs and torso. "She (also) with-
drew."
Although Jackie could have eas-
ily succumbed to the pain she
endured throughout her young life,
she chose to fight back. Now, after
years of counselling and support
from her family, she has turned a
tragedy into something positive.
Working in conjunction with the
Oshawa Durham Rape Crisis Cen-
tre, Jackie has become the keynote
speaker in a program known as
PICKERING — Summer is going
to be a little snore fun for Neil and Pat
Frost now that the Pickering couple
have some extra spending cash.
The Frosts recently won $ 10.000
with an Ontario Lottery Corporation
Instant Bingo ticket.
"We're planning to buy two moun-
tain bikes immediately;' said Pat
when she and Neil went to pick up
their cheque at the lottery office. They
also plan to undertake home improve-
ments with their winnings.
Neil is an electronic image proces-
sor and Pat is a network manager. Neil
bought the winning ticket at the
Bayridges Market on Krosno Boule-
vard.

'Through the Eyes of a Child'.
Jackie talks to students, educa-
tors, health-care workers or anyone
who feels they may benefit from
listening to her speak of her experi-
ence, including the secrecy, denial
and the healing process.
"For about four years I was fine
until one day (my abuser) came
back and started stalking me:' Jack-
ie says in her prepared presentation.
"When I found out that he was
watching me I gained 200 pounds
and quit going to school because I
was afraid he was going to come
and get my three-year-old sister and
hurt her like he did me"
To date, Jackie has relived the
horror several times by talking to
different groups, including students
from Durham Region high schools.
The response from the students,
their parents and educators from the
schools has been great, she says.
About a dozen students facing sim-
ilar abuse have already approached
her asking where they can turn for
help.
Jackie says her life has really
turned around in recent years, not-
ing that she's making many new
friends, lost a lot of the excess
weight and has already decided on a
career — appropriately enough, as a
child psychologist.
As for the program, she plans to
continue with it as long as it's help-
ing people. But, like her life in
many ways, it too has a happy end-
ing.
"One more thing, don't feel
sorry for me:' she says in her clos-
ing remarks to her audience. "I'm a
survivor, not a dead victim"

the victory. Perreira record-
