What Pickering does
when it's hot,, hot, hot

PICKERING — Hot enough for 'ya?
Well if it's any comfort while you melt in
your car during the afternoon rush hour or toss
and turn in your sweltering bedroom at night, all
this heat is making some people happy.
The folks at the Pickering Recreation Com-
plex are pleased because the soaring tempera-
tures have brought in more customers.
"We haven't done any statistics but I would
say we're doing very well;" says Liz Bowes, pro-
gram superintendent at the rec complex.
Naturally, this latest hot spell and the one at
the beginning of the month inspired many to
drop in for a soak in the complex's pool during
afternoon or evening swim times. But the sticky

air-conditioned fitness facilities and tennis and
squash courts.
The dog days have also kept the staff busy at
the Dairy Queen on Kingston Road.
"Business is up, definitely," says owner Sher-
ry Shaban. "Hot weather and ice cream go
together."
The most popular cooler at the Dairy Queen
when the mercury soars, according to Ms. Sha -
ban, is the "Blizzard", a concoction of ice cream
mixed with toppings you can eat or drink.
But she notes the market for Blizzards and
other frozen treats is not so hot when it's stifling
but cloudy outside.

Municipal clerks have decided
Ajax will get two public school
trustees and Durham's three northern
municipalities will share two on the
new 11 -member Durham district pub-
lic school board to be elected this fall.
In a preliminary report, the clerks
of Pickering, Whitby and Oshawa
determined Oshawa will get three
trustees, Pickering, Ajax and Whitby
two each, and Brock, Scugog and
Uxbridge will share two. Trustee can-
didates will run at large in all munic-

tion, except in Ajax where they will run in
wards.
At a special meeting Wednesday night.
Durham Board of Education trustees
grudgingly voted to receive the decision,
which will he the basis for the final report
to go to the Province by the end of this
month. An attempt by some trustees to sup-
port the principle of each municipality
being represented on the board lost in a 6-
6 tie vote.
The board's I -o al Education Improve-
ment Committee (LEIC) also accepted the
report without comment other than to sug-
gest that one of the two northern trustees be
placed in Scugog with the other one shared
by Uxbridge and Brock.
"There is no easy answer;' said Ajax
trustee Colleen Jordan. who urged trustees
to support representation by population.
noting provincial regulations call for "rea-
sonable" representation for smaller com-
munities.
" I think we're clearly divided. This isn't
the solution we would have chosen."
In fact, throughout the meeting. trustees
constantly stated the new board needs one
more trustee to make the representation
fair. But a recent letter from the deputy
Minister of Education made it clear there
will be only I I trustees on the new board,

down from 15 on the current board.
"We definitely will not get another
trustee in this election;" said board chair-
man Ruth Ann Schedlich, a Pickering
trustee.
The board was divided along the lines of
representation by population and represen-
tation of each of the board's seven munici-
palities.
The first factor places more
emphasis on trustee representa-
tion along the more -heavily pop-
ulated lakeshore municipalities.
The second would see each
municipality get at least one
trustee, leaving Ajax with only
one. The six -member LEIC was
unable to back one plan or the
other in a meeting two weeks
ago which left the clerks of the
three largest municipalities with [IS
the job.
Whitby trustee Patty Bow-
man appealed to trustees to sup-
port representation for each
municipality.
"When we over -centralize.
we really do rob people of their
voices;' she said, adding the
people in the north might want
to leave Durham if they aren't
properly represented on the
board. Oshawa trustee Ken
Ridge said having three trustees represent
the three smaller northern municipalities is
"grossly disproportionate."
Brock trustee Bill Fairburn said he'd
like the LEIC, which he chairs, to appeal
the clerks' final report and suggested he'll
he talking to Brock council about an
appeal.

Only LEICs, school boards and mumci-
pal councils can appeal the clerks' deci-
sion. Once the final report is completed and
handed to the school board, the different
bodies'have 10 days to make their appeals
to the provincial Education Improvement
Commission, which then has 14 days to
make a ruling.

Among those hoping the
hardest for an inferno the rest
of the summer are the folks
who sell air conditioners.
"If it's 90 degrees in the
shade, all the better," says
William Laskaris, sales man-
ager at Certified Heating and
Air Conditioning on Motion
Road in Pickering. Steamy
weather brings in the impulse
buyers, explains Mr. Laskaris,
since those who plan to get air
conditioning in any case order
it by early spring. This week
the impulse buyers have been
calling.
"If it gets hot, everybody
wants them in yesterday"
Mr. Laskaris notes a hot
summer usually means healthy
sales the following spring as
people anticipate more hot
weather. After the most recent
sultry summer his company's
spring air conditioning sales
went up 700 per cent.
Torrid temperatures have
also brought big smiles to the
faces of the people who run
Cory Pantridge is lucky -- he
has a friend with a pool.
Going for a dip during the
recent spell of hot, humid
weather has become a popu-
lar pastime in Pickering.
Pickering Hydro, who have
been busy pumping out power
to keep the gym cool at the rec
complex, the ice cream frozen
at the Dairy Queen, and air
conditioners humming in
offices, stores and homes
throughout Pickering.

in the summer because operat-
ing costs are lower. "It will be
good for the rates. If the utility
does well in the summer
months and has a good margin
it can offer stability in the
coming year or even a rate
reduction"
The only clouds that might
appear in the summer sky for
Pickering Hydro are power
failures resulting from the
overloading of the system
when the demand for electrici-
ty becomes very high. On a hot
day, it can take up to 115
megawatts to service the
town's needs.
But so far, says Mr. Wiers-
ma, except for a recent flicker
of electricity interruption at the
Pickering Town Centre and a
few problems with transform-
ers and transmission lines due
to heavy use, things have been
going smoothly.
So perhaps residents can
take comfort from the fact a
sauna summer will mean sav-
ings next year — that is unless
they have air conditioning and
are spending next year's sav-
ings now to keep cool.

8:45 p.m. was swarmed by a large
group of teens who demanded free
treats.
Sgt. Grimley says one of the teens
pulled a knife and threatened to
carve up the vendor unless he hand-
ed over ice cream.
When police arrived on the scene,
the other teens fled and the girl was
apprehended. She's charged with
robbery and possession of a danger-
ous weapon.
Around 4 p.m. the same day, Sgt.
Grimley says, a 17 -year-old Dickie
Dee vendor operating a cart near a
ball diamond on Valley Farm Road
in Pickering was approached by
another teenage boy who demanded
money.
When the vendor refused to turn
over cash, the suspect picked up a
beer bottle, smashed it on the
bleachers and threatened the Dickie

As the inquiry probing the wrongful murder con-
viction of Guy Paul Morin continues in Toronto, an
unflattering portrait is emerging of Durham Regional
Police and the way investigators here conducted the
Christine Jessop case.
We've heard of a lack of co-operation — it proba-
bly wouldn't be out of line to call it rivalry — between
the Durham and York police forces, we've heard
retired detective Bernie Fitzpatrick agree communica-
tion between officers working the case was so poor
"the right arm didn't know what the left arm was
doing". it's been described how documents and
records weren't shared between those tracking
Christine's killer.
Worse, there was downright bungling on the case,
as some of Christine's remains were left behind at the
scene. only to be discovered later by her brother. More
tales of sloppy police work have yet to be told at the
Morin inquiry, as the lineup of Durham cops to take
the stand has only just begun.
As Mr. Fitzpatrick's testimony continues, the trou-
bling suggestion surfaces that Durham police first
selected a suspect, then proceeded to build a case
against him. The pressure to solve a high-profile
crime involving a child may have outweighed the less -
than -perfect file of evidence pointing to Mr. Morin as
the perpetrator.
We're left wondering if this case was unique in the
way it was handled.
We want to believe in the justice system. We want
to know that it's a rare incident indeed when the
wrong man is jailed for murder, while the guilty party
goes free. We want to have faith in the Durham
Regional Police Service.
The police services board has an opportunity to
help rebuild that reputation. When it selects a -new
chief this fall it should be someone who can bring new
ideas, new structure and a renewed dignity to the
beleaguered police force. Should there be more than
one candidate with the right stuff for the job, strong
consideration should be given to a candidate from out-
side the force. An internal candidate may be viewed
by the public as a child of the Durham way of doing
things — and that way has suffered irreparably under
the scrutiny of the Morin inquiry.
It's our hope that the new chief will restore our
shaken faith, and effectively remove any incompe-
tence that might still remain in our local police force.

MPPs have decided
education not important
to single moms
To the editor:
Well, I don't know where to
start. To say the least I am very
disappointed with our govern-
ment. My sister and I are both
single mothers on social assis-
tance and we want to go back to
school.
We have been accepted into a
college course but we have no
hope now of making it there.
There is a $140 fee that we have
to pay up -front until our student
loans come in. My sister called
social assistance and they told her
that MPPs had made some
changes to the system and they
are unable to help us.
All we wanted was for them to
lend us the money, so we would
go to school. They said it was out
of their hands and they couldn't
help. We figure we were both
turned down because MPPs have
decided that our education isn't
important.
You, as the taxpayer, I'm sure
find this very important. Why
should you have to pay to take
care of us and our children when
we are perfectly able to go to
school, get an education and get a
job'? Is $140 going to stop us from
getting an education? The scary
part is it probably will.

I'm lucky
to be alive
I read a story this week in a newspaper about
a girl in Hamilton who faces the prospect of a
life without the use of her limbs.
The girl will likely never walk again after a
swimming accident. She is the same age I was
when I dove into a friend's pool in 1977, hitting
my head on the shallow bottom, crushing two
vertebrae and leaving sharp bone fragments rest-
ing against my spinal cord.
I spent the entire summer in hospital and
underwent a lengthy operation. The surgeon
took a sizable piece of bone out of my hip, graft-
ed it on to the damaged portion of my spine and
joined it all together with great precision and
care.
The recovery was excruciating. I had to learn
to walk again because I hadn't for so long. I
wore an uncomfortable (and unforgiving) neck
brace for several months until the bones in my
neck healed sufficiently.
I'm lucky.
Too many people, in too many communities,
injure themselves irrevocably every summer
because of one moment of carelessness.
It happened to me when I was 13. When
you're 13 and in the fust leg of a long, hot sum-
mer holiday, you don't think about conse-
quences.
You think about baseball, being cool, kissing
your girlfriend and doing things — doing any-
thing — with your friends.
I ended up doing none of those things that
summer.
But I'm luc
I'm lucky lause these are some of the
things I've been incredibly fortunate to experi-
ence since then:
* Felt the touch of my father's hand shortly
before he passed away.
* Walked down the aisle on my wedding day.
* Carried my first newborn son from the
delivery room to the neonatal care unit and felt
the softness of his perfectly new skin.
* Walked on a beach in Venezuela and flew
in a parasail.
That one moment of juvenile recklessness so
many years ago could have had a very different
ending. I'm lucky and I still thank God for my
good fortune.
So, take care when you're enjoying a long,
hot holiday break. You might not be quite so for-
tunate, like ttrat girl from Hawndton.

Police nab Pickering prowler
PICKERING —An 18 -year-old man unlawful-
ly at large from a Pickering youth facility was arrest-
ed Wednesday after police foiled a burglary.
Durham Regional Police officers, alerted by an
alarm to the break-in just after I p.m. at a Flavelle
Court residence, were unable to find a suspect dur-
ing an initial search of the home, Sergeant Jim
Grimley said. The sergeant said a suspect —
believed to have also broken into another house on
the street — was arrested as he tried to leave the
home moments after officers exited. Police recov-
ered a knife, thought to have been used to pick the
front -door lock. Ian Stuart Johnston, 18, was
charged with two counts of break and enter, posses-
sion of burglary tools, possession of stolen property,
possession of a controlled substance, carrying a con-
cealed weapon, breach of probation and being
unlawfully at large.Sgt. Grimley said the- accused
was AWOL from the Durhamdale youth facility in
Pickering since June 21.

Seventy-five years after a school safety
patroller program was introduced to Ontario
at a Durham Region school, more than 160
patrollers will visit Oshawa Monday to learn
more about their jobs.
The elementary school -aged children will
be at Camp Samac for the 28th annual CAA
Central Ontario School Safety Patrol Officers'
Training Camp.
The safety patrol program's roots are at
Westmount Public School (now called the
Adult Education Centre, on the east side of the
Oshawa Centre), where it was first initiated in
1922, says Sergeant Paul Malik of Durham
Regional Police.
Safety patrollers are now found at most
elementary schools throughout Canada and
there are about 1,500 throughout Durham
Region, he adds.
Patrollers from across Ontario who have
been selected to be captains of their safety
patrols when school resumes in September
will be at Camp Samac July 21 to 25 for the
training camp.
' lite training camp has a nice history
going for it and we have kids from all over the
province coming in;' he says, listing off Sault
Ste. Marie, Peterborough, Barrie, Orillia and
Toronto as examples. About 40 of the partici-
pants are from Durham schools, he says.
About 30 police officers from around
Ontario and 12 student chaperones are also
involved in the training camp. One of the
police officers helping with the event, Kim
Dunn of Durham Regional Police, is a gradu-
ate of the training camp, notes Sgt. Malik.

leadership and team building exercises and
provide on-the-job training at simulated inter-
sections and in school bus emergencies.
They will also learn first aid through a St.
John Ambulance course and how to use a fire
extinguisher in a demonstration by the
Oshawa Fire Department.
In addition to learning, the patrollers will
have "a whole bunch of fun" with recreation-
al activities such as swimming, volleyball,

Do-it-yourself automotive customers will be pleased with some recent changes
at the Canadian Tire Store at 1300 Kingston Road in Pickering. The store has
introduced an extensive assortment of brand name auto parts, including Bosch,
Monroe, Fenco, TRW, AI%iCO and Quaker State. The store has also been
remodeled to feature a conveniently located automotive parts department and
staff have been especially trained to meet the demands of automotive
customers, from the 'light' do-it-yourselfer to the'heavy' do-it-yourselfer.
-This new auto parts retailing concept is based on extensive customer
research. Our customers told us they want easy access to automotive parts,
dedicated auto parts cash registers and an extensive selection of brand name
parts," says Bill Graham, Associate Dealer, who owns and operates the Kingston

However, pulling or scratching the ears, head banging,
irritability, listlessness may all be signs of chronic
recurring fluid in the ear. Other signs include
misunderstanding directions, wanting the television louder
than usual.
What can your Audiologist do to help?
If a child persists with recurring ear infections or chronic
middle ear fluid, an Audiologist should become involved
in the child's care. The AUDIOLOGIST can determine
the type and degree of any associated hearing loss and can
monitor the child's middle ear function through impedance
measurements. Although the child's ear infection may
have cleared, the fluid may remain for months causing a
fluctuating conductive hearing loss. In fact, research in
1985 revealed that:
"70% of children treated by antibiotics had fluid
remaining in the middle ear two weeks following
treatment, 40% after one month, 20% after two months
and 10% after three months."
The hearing impairment may go undetected if the child in
not monitored by an AUDIOLOGIST. "Silent" middle ear
fluid often causes no other systems than hearing loss and
is very common in young children.

However, pulling or scratching the ears, head banging,
irritability, listlessness may all be signs of chronic
recurring fluid in the ear. Other signs include
misunderstanding directions, wanting the television louder
than usual.
What can your Audiologist do to help?
If a child persists with recurring ear infections or chronic
middle ear fluid, an Audiologist should become involved
in the child's care. The AUDIOLOGIST can determine
the type and degree of any associated hearing loss and can
monitor the child's middle ear function through impedance
measurements. Although the child's ear infection may
have cleared, the fluid may remain for months causing a
fluctuating conductive hearing loss. In fact, research in
1985 revealed that:
"70% of children treated by antibiotics had fluid
remaining in the middle ear two weeks following
treatment, 40% after one month, 20% after two months
and 10% after three months."
The hearing impairment may go undetected if the child in
not monitored by an AUDIOLOGIST. "Silent" middle ear
fluid often causes no other systems than hearing loss and
is very common in young children.

PICKERING — The Pickering
Slo-Sports Red Sox major mosquito
rep baseball team gained a measure of
revenge in winning the championship
at the recent Georgina Minor Baseball
Association Tournament.
Pitted against Agincourt in the final,
the Red Sox won 12-5 over their oppo-
sition who had defeated them earlier in
the tourney. Mitchell McGuire sealed
the victory with a bases -loaded triple
which drove in three runs. Peter
Phillips won the most valuable player
award for his strong pitching perfor-
mance as he went six -and -one-third
innings, giving up only five runs.
The Red Sox major mosquitos
began the tourney on a sour note, drop-
ping a disappointing 4-3 loss to
Agincourt.
Pickering recovered quickly and
mercied Clarington 12-0 in the second
game.
The Sox went on to mercy the host
Georgina Bulldogs I 1-0 in the third
contest.
The Slo-Sports mosquitos ended
the round-robin portion of the tourna-
ment with a 2-1 record which placed
them second in their division.
Agincourt took top spot with a 3-0
record, so the two teams moved on to
the semi-finals.
The Red Sox continued their
shutout trend by posting a 7-0 victory
in the semi-final over Uxbridge. The
win advanced them to the final round.
The Red Sox's next tournament is
in Clarkson on the weekend of July 19
and 20.
Team members are Kevin
Benedick, Marc DiRosa, Kyle Foster,
Mehdi Khanahmadi, Mitchell
McGuire, Jonathan Moore, Michael

of our kitchens is the same as the big names or else
we wouldn't deal with them."

They offer professional installation of ceramics and
marble as well as granite. They also have a large
selection of fine imported tiles to choose from so
GTA can meet the decorating needs of the most
seiective customers.
Dan and Joe have also tackled some impres-
sive painting projects including painting the nation-
al head office for St.Clair/Color Your World. They
have also been featured in painting segments for
Global TV and the Life Network.
As with most renovation jobs, one of the most
important aspects is in the preparation of the pro-
ject.
"For example, when we install tiles we always
remove the existing flooring such as vinyl and
screw down the floor to the joists," says Dan. "This
cracking."
There are installers who'll skip this step to
save a little money but the GTA team will never cut
comers- Their renovations are done to last many
years and retain their looks, functionality and value.

experience in designing layouts, floor plans and
suggest the appropriate materials and colours to
complete the project," says Dan. "Also when we
begin a project, we're completely corrunitted to see-
ing it through until our clients are completely satis-
fied.
Another important but often overlooked
aspect of any renovation is the attitude of the people
doing the work.
"When we start a project we show up for
work everyday," says Joe. "Our clients never have
to wonder if we're going to show up for work the
next day or if they won't see us for a few days. We
also have a policy of not smoking in your home."
