Recycling and reincarnation
George Summers supervises the unloading of a truck-

collects roughly 100 tons of recyclables each day.
Your Blue Box is the place

newspapers, cans and plastic
BY ROB BMBIDGE
SPECIAL Io TTdE WWS ADVERTISER
Ever wondered where the News Advertiser goes when you
put it in the blue box? It could cad up bringing news to some-
one south of the border.
And the aluminum that makes up the pop can you recycled
last weds likely crossed the border half a dozen times in the
last year.
Newspapers and pop cans do a lot of travelling and under-
go many changes as they're used, reborn and used again.
In Durham Region. the newspapers and pop cans you put
in your blue box are picked up by Miller Waste Systems,
which is contracted by the Radon to collect recyclables from
curbside blue boxes. All that material goes to the Durham
Recycling Centre in Whitby, a collection centre run by the
Region.
Newspapers arrive at the Recycling centre mixed with
inserts, fine paper, junk mail, magazines, phone books and
even paperback novels. It's all bound together in bales that
weigh about 540 kilograms.

is sold to steel mills in Hamilton.
Durhant Region recycling supervisor
Sue Campbell rerorts that in Manch the
Region sold 32 tonnes of aluminum, 86
tonnes of steel and 1,012 tonnes of
newspaper.
Bob Nelson, general manager of
Atlantic Packaging. says the Whithy
plant buys newspaper from a number of
municipalities in Canada and the U.S.,

takes cans to the U.S. and hack manv
times a year as it's recycled over and

Most of the aluminum collected in the
Region goes to an Alcan plant in
Oswego, New York, on Lakc Ontario

Even though gayly is a Regional
road, the Town has also purchased
two new signs at about $350 apiece
for the zero -tolerance zone, to be
posted at each end.
The zone will be the first of its
kind in Durham, according to Town
traffic and waste management co-
ordinator Stephen Brake.
"It could be interesting. We'll
have to see how effective the signs
are, and the enforcement"
Mr. Brake says the Region or
Town will do a study on the zone to
determine what kind of impact it's
having. He explains speed limits are
often sct at the rate under which K5
per cent of cars travel on a particular
road, which is generally considered
to he the speed motorists `feel they
can drive safely". At that stretch of
Bayly, the speed for the 85th per-

"To drop that 85th percentile

Pickering's new zone is turning
out to be a kind of pilot project for
everyone, notes Mr. Brake.

`You've

Morin
BY STEPHEN SHAW
UURHAM STAt I'
Durham Regional Police detec-
tives used "mind games" to try to
:pry a murder confession out of Guy
Paul Morin and ignored key evi-
dence indicating he couldn't have
killed Christine Jessop, an inquiry
;has heard.
Investigators. acting on confes-
sion -coaxing FBI tips, surrounded
-Mr. Morin with crime scene evi-
dcnce during an interview at 18
Division in Whitby following his
arrest in April. 1985, Said retired
Durham detective Bernie Fitzpatrick
at the Morin inquiry yesterday.
Mr. Fitzpatrick, who headed the
murder investigation with then -part-
ner John Shepherd. said the pair
were following the advice contained
in an FBI report, which suggested
surrounding the suspect with the
dead girl's clothing, investigative
flow charts, filing cabinets marked
with Mr. %forin's name and his fin-
gerprints.
The idea of it is to have him see
things and hopefully obtain con-
fession. . . In other words to force
things to happen;' inquiry counsel
Austin Cooper suggested.
" 1 don't know if 1'd use the word
'force.' but yes:' Mr. Fitzpatrick
replied.
Despite relentless interrogation,
Mr. Morin maintained his inno-
cence, insisting, "You've got the
wrong guy:' according to interview
transcripts ruled inadmissible in
court during Mr Morin's first-
degree murder trial.
Mr. !Morin was acquitted at a first
trial and convicted at a second of
first-degree murder for the sex -slay-
ing of his nine-year-old neighbor.
whose bo4ly Was found in Durham

19%3.
After a 10 -year ordeal. Mr. Morin
was eventually cleared in 1995 by
DNA evidence.
During the intcrview after his
arrest, a defiant Mr. Morin, faced
with persistent prodding by the two
detectives, maintained "1 never
touched Christine, guarantee it -
"Never gave her a hug or a piggy
back ride?" Mr Shepherd asked of
him.
"Never... 1 never placed a hand
on her." Mr Morin shot back.
"You've gilt the wrong guy. I've
beenframed."
Mr Moran was told police had
overwhelming evidence" linking
him to the murder, including his fin-
gerprints at the crime scene.
"Fingerprints don't lie Mr.
Shepherd told him.
Mr. Fitzpatrick yesterday admit-
ted that no such fingerprints existed
connecting Guy Paul Morin to
Christine's murder. explaining the
detectives were trying to "mess with
his mind:' hoping he would "break
down" and confess.
Instead, Mr. Moran offered hair.
blood and saliva samples for testing.
dearly the actions, Mr. Cooper said,
of an innocent man.
Mr. Fitzpatrick was also asked
why police discounted the potential
evidence of a 66 -year-old Sunder-
land woman, who on the night of
Christine's murder, heard a child's
screams coming from the field
where the girl's remains were even-
tually found.
The ex -detective denied Mr.
Cooper's suggestion that evidence
was ignored "because you felt that
you had the right man and (her) evi-
dence would let him off the hook:'
Mr. Fitzpatrick said other officers
had determined the screams had
come from ail domestic dispute at a
nearby home.
Ken Jessop, Christine's older
bother, testified last month at the
inquiry that he and his mother Janet
were told by Mr. Fitzpatrick that the
woman was ..a loon, a drunk:'
Mr. Fitzpatrick said he could not
recall making such comments but
did not deny that he did.

Make local hospitalGuest
full-service facnit Column
' Y
An unfortunate rift between a highly qualified sur-
geon and the administrative staff at Ajax -Pickering
General Hospital could be construed as just that: a
dispute between an employer's needs and an employ-
ee's professional expectations.
But the story this week about plastic surgeon
Mahmood Kara, whose 'courtesy privileges- at the
hospital were no longer needed based on a decision
by hospital administrators underscores a much larger
issue as it pertains to the hospital.
Here we have a skilled surgeon who, by all
accounts, provides a service shown to be a benefit to
patients in several emergency cases.
We also have hospital administrators handcuffed by
provincial budget constraints despite their best inten-
tions to provide the specialized services of Dr. Kara.
Percolating in the background are the conclusions
drawn by the Durham Region District Health Council
which suggest Ajax -Pickering General Hospital
should be a full-service facility for the western por-
tion of Durham Region.
We have always agreed with those conclusions:
Ajax and Pickering continue to grow and are expected
to do so in the foreseeable future.
As a consequence, this debate isn't really about
poor planning on the hospital's part, as Dr. Kara sug-
gests. It's about burgeoning demand for services.
exponential growth in the western communities of
Durham Region, a disproportionate amount of fund-
ing from the provincial government to meet those
demands, and limited current budgets.
Again, if Durham's regional health care system is
to adequately meet the needs of its residents. Ajax -
Pickering General Hospital must play a pivotal and
all-encompassing role in the provision of those ser-
vices.
Then, and only then, can we expect to see more
permanent specialized services for those in need.

In response to the July 8 !News Advertiser
editorial headlined 'New GTA board a
bust', our readers said:
"You're beginning to -Axon l like a regional councillor or
local councillor who sees a bogeyman around every gov-
ernment suggestion or proposal. There is nothing in the
GTSB proposal that would suggest anything about sharing
Toronto's welfare costs. That's a suggestion of Jack
Layton and some of the Metro councillors. For Durham
Region to vote down the GTSB because of a suggestion
by some hare-hrained politician in Metro is absolutely
ridiculous. if you look at the parking loot of the local GO
train stations, you'll see that Ajax, Pickering and Durham
residents generally are getting good use out of the GO
system and that's one of the things that's included in the
GTSB situation. It's about time that Durham Region
politicians wake up and realize if they don't start working
together they're going to be out of existence altogether --
both Durham Region and the kcal municipalities"

Column inflames
nuclear debate
I am a nuclear safety engineer and
have practised my profession with
Ontario Hydro at both the Bruce
Nuclear Power Development on Lake
Huron ind at our Pickering Nuclear
Generating Station for 15 years. I
write to you not as an official repre-
.cntative of Ontario Hydro but,
rather, as a concerned Ajax citizen of
seven years.
Having just read Steve Houston's
July 6 column headlined 'Keeping an
eye on the giant next door', I am left
with feelings of immense frustration
and disappointment. What particular-
ly disturbs me is the apparent disre-
gard Mr. Houston shows for his com-
munity and his position of public
trust. My quarrel is not with his
apparent anti-nuclear agenda. I can
take the criticism. I believe cogent
and constructive criticism of my
industry is necessary. The problem is
that Mr. Houston's clever little image
mix of children frolicking at the
beach with a backdrop of the "sleep-
ing giant' of concrete silos is irrc-
sponsihlc and inflammatory journal-
ism (no doubt excused by the ageless
"editorial/opinion" defence).
Let me tell you who and what we
are. We have more than 2,000 perma-
nent staff at Pickering. Our numbers
include op rators, engineers, scien-
tists. electricians, mechanics, scaf-
folders, clerical workers, accountants,
and many others. Many of us took
our families to the fireworks in
Pickering on Canada Day. Many of us
drop in for a coffee and some empty
morning calories at the local dough-
nut shop on the way to work. Our
kids play soccer with your kids. We
get frustrated with the summer con
struction delays on the highways. We
live in the community! We arc rot
"faceless people in space-age suits'
standing idly by listening to the
"hissing and popping" of aging
equipment! And now, thanks to Mr.
Houston, we get to spend time
explaining this to our curious neigh-
bors and relatives.
I know the speculative images
were acknowledged to be "quite
imaginative and inaccurate. I'm
sure". Please understand my sensitivi-
ty, however, when Mr. Houston goes
on to conclude, based solely on his
fireworks -induced "moment of clari-
ty". that somehow Durham Nuclear
Awareness was now due a level of
respect that hundreds of dedicated
professionals at Pickering were not.
In addition to the federally mandated
scrutiny of the Atomic Energy
Control Board, we have been scruti-
nized with unprecedented zeal for the
past two years by the media, local
politicians, and Durham Nuclear
Awareness, among others. We are
tired of the endless superficial mus-
ings. We certainly don't expect DNA
to change their approach, but we do
look for a fair shake from the media.
1t is a very complex industry with
many serious issues to be discussed
in the public forum.
Your readers should ask them-
selves if Mr. Houston's article added
anything positive to the debate. Was
his intent to educate or inflame?

Road show
Much ado a play coming to Ajax, Pickefing
BY IVIK IIFLE YOUNG
DURHAM SIAI I
There's Much Ado at Durham's Drift-
wood Theatre this year.
The Little Theatre Group That Could is
pleasing greater numhers of theatre audi-
ences all over Durham this year with its trav-
elling road show,
This year the talented troupe is touring
Durham's parks with Much Ado About
Nothing -- one of Shakespeare's most enter-
taining and funny offerings.
The troupe presents the play Wednesday.
July 16 (tonight) at Esplanade Park. Picker-
ing, and Thursdays. July 17 and July 24 at
Rotary Park, Ajax. Show time is 8 p.m.
Artistic director D. Jeremy Smith says
Driftwood, far from [king dead wood, is
pulling down solid roots in Durham.
"When we started this three seasons ago,
many people were very quick of tell me it
would never work. Now, 6.(NN) (audience
members) later, we're still here and 1 think
we'll be around for a long time to come"
Smith says Durham is a perfect territory
for a Shakespearian theatre group to flour-
ish. For one
thing. classical
outdoor Iheatrc 111
I% very popular
as a non-profit organization, so it can issue
tax receipts enabling it to more easily raise
funds.
Meanwhile, Smith says he's enjoying his
duties more and more. For one thing, this is
his first year directing a production: he was
an actor in the first three Driftwood produc-
tions.
"It's been a great experience for me. But
then I'm blessed with a cast that listens, has
faith and is willing to go the distance. And I
have some pretty wacky ideas and they've
been pretty patient with mc."
While the increased number of shows this
year will put more pressure on the cast.
Smith isn't worried. "They're definitely up
for that. I can't speak more highly of them.
It's a very tight, talented little group"
Smith adds he's not the only one having a
good time. Audiences will enjoy Much Ado.
too.
"Mcre's no excuse not to go. It's free and
Shakespeare wrote some of the best stories
ever sold"
He says some people are still hesitant at
the thought of listening to Shakespeare. "hut
after all this isn't an alien language. It's Eng-
lish. It is poetry... but it's our language. And
what I try to emphasize for our actors is that
they should try to make (Shakespeare's poet-
ry) their own. As long as they have the con-
viction in what they're saying, they can draw
in the audience:'
Smith says over the past three summer
seasons, the good feelings created all around
by this outdoor theatre project have given
him greater conviction in what he's doing.
"When a group of people get together and
seem like they're having a great time, it
instills in me the belief that I'vc started
something right and good. It's a positive
experience for those participating and it's
good for the community."
So, venture out to the show, and prepare
to Ixe entertained, but also prepare for hugs
and/or rain.
"Bring your bug spray and your umbrel-
las:' says Smith. "There's no guarantee we
won't be rained out. but we try to he as
walcr-tight as possible. It will he a sad day
when we have to cancel. Luckily we haven't
had to cancel yet."

PICKERING — The
Pickering Lady Devils
novice girls' fastball team
captured the bronze medal
al the Cambridge tourna-
ment last weekend.
In the bronze -medal
contest. Pickering defeat-
ed Kitchener 6-1. The
squad got strong pitching
from Katie McKinnon
along with some solid
defensive help to keep
Kitchener to one run. A
spectacular catch by
Sonya Spalding in deep
centre field was the high-
light of the contest.
Offensively. Sheri Parker
led the charge with a triple
and three RBI, while
Melissa Meikle. Ashlyn
Young and Lauren Fawcett
chipped in with one RBI
apiece.
The Devils started the
tournament against the

able to get out of some
tough jams. Great play by
catcher Christie Barlow
helped keep Kitchener at
bay. The offensive charge
was led by Meikle.
Fawcett and Farr, who all
banged out triples. Olivia
Lennox added a double
and a single.
The Lady Devils led
Cambridge 5-2 going into
the final inning of the third
contest. However,
Cambridge erupted for
four runs in its last plate
appearance to post a 6-5
victory. Young and Parker
hit two triples apiece. Farr
and McKinnon shared the
pitching duties.
The girls received
strong moral support and
leadership from teammate
Laura Hill who was unable
to suit up for the tourna-

When is the right time to sell your home?
Homeowners face a double quandary when faced
with the prospect of selling their homes: How does one
make sure the decision to sell is the right one; and once
the choice is made, when is the right time to sell?
•Traditionally, there have been four major reasons
why and when people sell their homes: financial and
market conditions, employment changes, family mat-
ters and lifestyle changes. In today's economy. one
additional issue has emerged which has great bearing:
low interest rates.
All these will not only affect your fundamental deci-
sion to sell, but will greatly impact your options
regarding when to sell.
Financial and market conditions
Almost every aspect of real estate involves market
conditions and financial issues — for the
seller they arc of the utmost importance.
After all, it's the seller who is putting prop-
erty, equity and sometimes, years of hard
work on the line.
With so much at stake, it's imperative
that sellers contact a real estate profession-
al. Only realtors have the hands-on experi-
ence and intimate knowledge of the real
estate industry needed to get the best possi-
ble price for your property.
We've all heard of 'buyer's' and 'sell-
er's' markets. These terms refer to the pro-
portion of people wanting to buy versus the
number of homes on the market. If the num-
ber of homes for sale outstrips potential
buyers, then it's a buyer's market. If there
are not enough homes to satisfy demand,
then it's a seller's market.
If you're selling for financial gain. you'll
obviously want to do so in a seller's market.
But, if you plan to purchase another home
after sale, there isn't as big a difference as
you would first think.
In a seller's market, you may sell your
home more quickly and for a better price.
but you'll be facing the opposite challenges
when purchasing. In a buyer's market, you
may have to wait longer to get a fair price,
but you'll have more selection and pricing
options when looking for your new proper-
ty.
Right now, interest rates arc near their
lowest in decades. This has led to unprece-
dented opportunities for those wishing to
buy. Often, mortgage payments will he less
than renton an apartment or townhome.
Therefore, a large number of consumers are
considering ownership, many for the first
time. For sellers, this holds the potential for
a huge boom.
-Seasonality" is a term that realtors use
to gauge when home sales are expected to
climb. Although this is only one factor to he
considered when selling, in Ontario, spring-
time tends to be a time of higher activity.
Buyers with children especially prefer to
look in the spring in order to settle in a new
home before school begins in the fall.
Employment chant"
Employment chance, can affect a deci-
sion to sell. There's the obvious matter of
relocation if a new job or promotion takes
you to a different city. In this case, selling
most often becomes a necessity unless the
homeowner wishes to retain a property for
investment or other purposes.
Moving to a smaller urban centre may
also allow you to purchase either a similar
home for less money or a bigger one for the
same outlay, even if a new job does not
require you to move up if you can.
The reality is that with interest rates as
attractive as they are, it's more possible
than ever to make a major move without
lowering your family's standard of living.
Family issaes
The family issue homeowners cite more
than any other when deciding to sell is chil-
dren. Most often, people want a bigrer
home to accommodate a newborn, or may
fund their family has simply outgrown the
home.
If this is the case, you're in a perfect
position relative to today's marketplace.
First and foremost, you can afford to put in
enough time to sell at the right price and
then find a home that suits your require-
ments. Contacting your realtor well in
advance of the date you wish to move will
virtually guarantee you'll find a good home
at a good price.
Lifestyle changes
The two most common lifestyle changes that moti-
vate sellers are retirement. For those planning to retire,
tndy enjoying your latter
in" of assets. Again, it's
in order to use the mar-
ket to your advantage
and sell at a good price.
Changes in lifestyle
can include things such
as buying a condomini-
um to ease the workload
involved with mainte-
nance and upkeep; city
dwellers who want to
