Pickering beaches safe for swimming Health department tests give all Durham beaches clean bill of health All Durham Region beaches are open again after five sites, including Ajax's Rotary Park and Whitby Beach East, had to take a week off. Tony Wong, manager for environmental health with the Durham Region Health Department, said testing for June 30 through July 4 indicates bacteria levels are fine once again. Tests "have indicated all beaches are doing considerably good," said Mr. Wong. "Actually the numbers are really low, so I'm quite happy'" Along with Rotary Park and Whitby, Beaverton North and South and Thorah Centennial Park were also posted as unsafe for swimming last week. Geometric testing is completed on a weekly basis and a result of more than 100 E.coli is considered unsafe. The beaches passing inspection once again are Frenchman's Bay West and East in Pickering, Kinsmen Beach in Port Perry, Scugog Island's Lakeside Beach, Lakeview Beach East in Oshawa, Clarington's New- castle Beach Central and Uxbridge's Elgin Pond. ii 0 I PAGE 2 - THE NEWS ADVERTISER TUESDAY, JULY 15, 1997 Help on way for preschoolers with speech problems Parents of preschoolers with speech difficulties should see improved service and shorter wait- ing periods under a proposed plan. The Durham Region District Health Council (DHC) has submit- ted its Preschool Speech and Lan- guage Services Plan to the Ministry of Health with a request for $1.4 million over three years.(The min- istry announced new funding of $20 million for this initiative last spring.) DHC executive director Lynda Hessey hopes to hear soon whether the ministry will approve Durham's plan, but expects some changes will occur regardless of funding. "We're trying to pool resources and enhance services;' Ms. Hessey says of pro- posed changes. Currently, speech-language ser- vices are provided at Grandview Children's Centre in Oshawa and Oshawa General Hospital — chil- dren could be on waiting lists for several months at both — as well as through private practitioners. Under the new plan, there would be just one waiting list for Grand- view and hospital services and pri- vate practitioners would be invited to take part because they may be used as contract staff, says Ms. Hes- sey. "We hope the plan will provide easier access and that the waiting time will be reduced. The earlier this is treated the better. There is some evidence that suggests we get a bet- ter outcome and reduce the possibil- ity of more service down the road with early intervention" The proposed model is based on the following eight service compo- nents: early identification, simpli- fied access, common intake, assess- ment, range of interventions, transi- tion planning, parent support/educa- tion services, and public awareness and education. Many children with speech and language difficulties have physical and/or developmental disabilities and are referred to services by physicians. Parents and day-care providers may also identify speech and language difficulties, notes Ms. Hessey. More than 4,000 Durham preschoolers are at potential risk for communication disorders. About 220 are currently waiting for assess- ment, according to the DHC. Copies of the Preschool Speech and Lan- guage Services Plan for Durham Region are available by calling the DHC at 433-4262. Parents interested in sitting on an implementation com- mittee pending approval of the plan can call that number as well. 4 - 000 ` DUO 375 Kingston' Rd., Pickerin VISIT OUR NEWLY RENOVATED STORE LOONIE • Hot Dog 1 • Fries F Milkshakes • Ice Cream Cones • Sundaes •Great FAMILY VALUE on all Dairy Products I • See BUTTER CUP the Cow • See THE LOONIE EXPRESS Model Train Circling the Store STORE HOURS- HWY.2 Mon. -Fri. 9am-8pm Sat. gam-6pm Sun. 11 am-5pm Mir P Amo relief in sight foi-Durham-resu BY Stl'sAN O'NmL hon tine United Stagy and'T into the, . Ontario Provincial Police report the right wheel of a westbound Honda 4X4 being driven by a 37 -year-old Pickering woman hit the gravel on the shoulder, sending the vehicle out of control. After the 4X4 left the road, it travelled approximately 100 metres through a ditch, narrowly missing a culvert. LIS 2H5 Publisher: Tim Whittaker ♦ Editorial Crime stopper lucky this time From the strange -but -true file comes a report of a woman who was, shall we say, her very own Crime Stopper on July 8. The facts as we know them are these: A Durham region woman comes home to her house at 1 p.m. to find a van parked in her driveway. Not expecting any visitors, she comes around to the back of her house to find a man carrying her TV set out of the basement. Having been robbed back on April 1, she decides she's having none of this. She orders the thief to put the TV set back, and... he does. She goes back to the front of the house and asks a second man in the van if anything she owns is in the vehicle. He shows her there isn't, and the first thief, by now back at the van, admits after questioning that her VCR is around the side of the house and that he'll put it back where it belongs, which he proceeds to do. Not satisfied with foiling the burglary, this gutsy woman demands money for damage to her screen door done by the crooks. One of them pulls out a wad of cash and offers $20. She takes that, says it isn't enough, and grabs $40 more from his hand. The two ashamed 'burglar wannabes' then sheepishly drive off, stopped in the act by this tough woman. It's a great story, but it could have had a far differ- ent ending as Sergeant Ken Hudson of Durham Regional Police says. "I would not recommend people do this because bad guys are not usually that gentle. They could easi- ly have beaten her up, injured her or abducted her." To top it off, the thugs, who apparently cased another home nearby earlier the same day, are still on the loose, though police are looking for them. Caution is the best policy in dealing with somebody as desperate and brazen as to rob your home in broad daylight. You just never know if the thief is armed and dangerous. Your life isn't worth a TV set or VCR. Call the police, and take down a description so you can help the cops do their job. I am concerned that Pickering Council has seemed to drop the ball again on a very important issue. Mayor Wayne Arthurs' state- ment "it was prudent to defer the issue.." only emphasizes the fact that our council does not have the foresight or wisdom to solve these problems in a timely manner. By failing to deal with the prob- lem and thus causing a gap between the household hazardous waste depot at the Brock West dump and what is to come once the politicians complete their make- work program, our council mem- bers have shown they are also part of the problem. Because council members are making it more difficult for people to dispose of household hazardous waste, people will find other ways to dispose of these products. You only have to travel along the concession roads and trails to see what the less -considerate members of our community have decided. The News Advertiser accepts letters to the editor. If memory serves correctly, Fridays throughout the summer went something like this: Dad dropped the car off at home at lunch and walked back to work. Upon his return, the station wagon was neatly packed full of clothes and food. Our dog was pacing around the car to ensure we wouldn't forget her and my brother, sister and I were anx- iously waiting to see what comic books we'd get for the two -and -a -half hour trip. To ensure we weren't overcome with hunger before we reached our destination, we enjoyed what could only be described as a feast — not some fast-food wanna-be feast, but a homemade one. Oh, and the house and yard were leftrs spotless - Sadly, here's where my memory stato fade a little: Just haw did it all get accom- plished? And how did we always manage to leave at the exact minute we planned? Well, since Dad was nowhere around when all this activity must have been taking place and since us kids were likely saying friends goodbye to ends we wouldn't see all weekend — and since we never had a magic wand — I've decided Mom must have had something to do with making everything (at least appear to be) so simple. Now that it's my turn to pack my little family into a minivan for a week up north, I've reached another conclusion: Mom must have been a circus performer in a previous life. I don't know how else she could have juggled so much so effotlessly. I started making lists two weeks ago and my house has been upside down for a week as I've made piles of things I don't want to fogeL If I keep this up, my kids will also remember me as a cirrous performer — a clown, PC[! s. But he and other patients received a letter from the surgeon last Thursday informing them plastic, reconstructive and hand surgery services at APGH had been cancelled due to "a seri- ous budget deficit" and that he would arrange appropriate care for all the patients he had already treated. "Now I don't know who's going to do (the surgery) and where," says Mr. Dallaire. "It's quite upsetting and annoying for his patients. The commu- nity needs this kind of service.' Jason Caverly of Pickering had minor surgery performed by Dr. Kara for an infected blister on his foot and was also upset to learn of the service cut at APGH. Since he has spina bifida, Mr. Caverly is not looking forward to having to make the difficult trip to Toronto or Oshawa for further treat- ment. Dr. Kara "is an extremely good doc- tor," says Mr. Caverly, who maintains the Province has gone beyond what the public wants in reducing health care expenditures. "I would think there is a limit to how much you can cut.
