PICKERING — Several parents
of developmentally -disabled children
who vowed a week ago to "get mili-
tant" in their demand for increased
support took their fight to the streets
Friday.
. Members of the support group
HEARTS Family Network held a
quiet demonstration outside the Pick-
ering constituency office of Commu-
nity and Social Services Minister and
Durham West MPP Janet Ecker.
They distributed pamphlets asking
for the "de -election" of Ms. Ecker,
who wasn't in her office at the time
of the demonstration. Others distrib-
uted the pamphlets to hundreds of
homes in Ms. Ecker's riding, as well
as on cars in shopping plazas.
"'Iris is a low-key demonstration,
but if she doesn't listen, we'll step
things up," promised Cathrina Mans-

Durham Council voted 18-6 Wednesday to oppose the
icreation of a GTSB recommended by provincial adviser
Milt Farrow in his report entitled Getting Together.

ommended Region politicians oppose a GTSB "for the
purposes of managing, delivering or generating capital
for the service infrastructure and, in essence, functioning
as a form of government'
Clarington Mayor Diane Hamra said if regional coun-
cillors are interested in a "made -in -Durham solution,
then let's get down to business and stop worrying about
protecting our own turf. If we don't, they'll come and
roll over us with a tank and we won't have a leg to stand
on.
Residents in her community would support the estab-
lishment of the GTSB if regional government was
retained, she added.
"If regional government is abolished, we want out.
Clarington people want out of the Greater Toronto Area.
We want no part of the GTA and we see the Greater
Toronto Services Board as a step in the door. If the
regions are abolished, we'd look at getting out"
Oshawa Councillor John Gray said, ."Oshawa resi-
dents don't support a GTA govermnent and it's am much
of a leap to say a Grew= Toronto Services Board isn't
much different'
In a referendum in 1995, 95 per cent of Oshawa resi-
dents expressed opposition to the city being part of a
GTA -wide government.
Ajax Mayor Steve Parish voted against the recom-':
mandation because a GTSB "isn't the monster some
people are portraying it. It's not taking over providing
major services, like water and sewer. The service it is
providing is GO Transit. "Farrow isn't perfect It's not
what I want or what you want. It doesn't set up some
monster to take away powers from the municipalities. To
take the position of not supporting the Farrow report
opens the door to the likes of (Mississauga Mayor) Haul
McCallion, who wants to get rid of the regions," Cam.
Parish said. -
"It's easy to tuck things. It's not so easy to say 'its
not perfect, but i can support it'. Fan -ow came as close to
the mark in this real world as you can come," he added.

"It's one of my major concerns of
setting up the Greater Toronto Ser-
vices Board," Mr. Witty says.
"They'll want us to share the costs of
the Metro Zoo, the art gallery and the
convention centre. As far as I'm con-
cerned, no way.
"They want to share all of their
problems, but none of their benefits;"
he added.
One of the Metro benefits is a
"strong assessment base and it will
be better after rc,i.sessment"
With property reassessment set to
he implemented next year, Mr. Witty
suggests, "We should really give that
process some time to settle down,
see if Metro's problems arc solved
and go from there."
The chairman says problems in
Metro started as businesses moved
out of the city to the surrounding
regions because property taxes are
lower here.
"The whole world has gone crazy
because of one problem," Mr. Witty
says, pointing to the reports on
reforming the Greater Toronto Area
done in the past two years, including
the Golden, Burnham and recently
completed and released Milt Farrow
documents.
A City of Toronto report notes
property taxes in the regions sur-
rounding Metro could rise by about
10 per cent if social assistance costs
arc shared across the GTA.
"I don't think the financial impact
on Durham Region will be that
severe.
"We have a high unemployment
rate in Durham Region and we'll be
sharing those costs with regions else-
where;" Mr. Witty says.
But, "I'd be opposed to (increas-
ing taxes here to pay Metro welfare

for other people's chil-
dren," explained Jenny
Schledermann of Ajax,
whose daughter has Angel-
man Syndrome.
"Our kids are an impor-
tant and viable part of our
society. We want them
treated like that. Services
and funds should be in
place for them:' said Ms.
Schledermann, pointing to
the money spent on young
offenders.
"Do our children have
to go out and commit a
crime before they're lis-
tened to?"
Whitby resident Frank
Walker, a paraplegic since
breaking his neck in a fall
from a porch last summer,
said he has come up
against "a lot of brick
walls" since he has begun
searching for training and
employment following
rehabilitation.
"They have a lot of rea-
sons why they can't help
you, but they don't come
up with ways they can help
you," the 34 -year-
old says of gov-
ernment services.
"You ask what
avenue you can
take, but you're
told you don't fit
the criteria (of
government -fund-
ed programs):"

about a document released
in April entitled Making
Services Work for People.

disabilities get
proper support.

A helping hand is being extended to
families with disabled children who
don't know where to turn.
Durham Family Network was formed
five years ago, but wants to remind fam-
ilies that it's still there to offer advice and
be an advocate for children. It also main-
tains a registry of support staff.
"A lot of people don't know we're
here:' says volunteer co-ordinator Cath-
rina Mansfield.
The network was established through
the efforts of about six parents who "felt
a strong need to get away from service -
type organizations which didn't let them
know about what services were available
elsewhere:' explains Ms. Mansfield.
"Many parents are intimidated by
government" and prematurely give up
looking for funds or support, she says.
When established, Durham Family
Network received some government
funding. It no longer gets that support,
but the Ajax -Pickering -Whitby Associa-
tion for Community has lent it an office,
where volunteers help parents in need.
Ms. Mansfield was in such need
when she discovered Durham Family
Network.
"I was in crisis with my son", a nine-
year-old who has been diagnosed with
global developmental retardation and
autism and has an attention deficiency
disorder, recalls Ms. Mansfield.
"We were doing bad financL

saved my fife. I feel I owe them a great
debt.
"If they didn't step in, my son may
have been institutionalized or placed in a
group home. They told me, 'You're not
the only parent going through this' and
put me in touch with other people in sim-
ilar situations. 1 was at my last end.1 did-
n't know who to call ... I didn't know
where to get (support) workers who
understand his disability:'
While the network maintains a reg-
istry of special -needs workers, it is also
looking for new staff — either trained or
simply caring people who would like to
help others. There's a $15 registration
fee for all applicants.
The network is also looking for more
volunteers and invites parents of disabled
children to call for help and/or support.
"Whatever the problem, all children
are welcome:' says Ms. Mansfield. "We
don't discriminate."

parents to contribute finan-
cially to the future of their
children without being
penalized, and removes a
user fee for equipment
used in the home, notes
Ms. Ecker.
She says many of those
initiatives are "direct
results" of meetings with
vocal parents, and Ms.
Ecker says she'll continue
to meet with parents and
groups.
At the HEARTS meet-
ing, parents suggested
writing letters to corporate
sponsors outlining how
Ms. Ecker's policies are
hurting their children, and
confronting her with their
concerns at functions she
attends.

PICKERING — Alexey
Alford is a typical happy, healthy,
active six-year-old.
The Pickering boy will head
into Grade 1 this September and
in the meantime is enjoying a
summer of fun with his family
and his many friends.
Tile tall. smiling chatterbox of
a boy is a far cry from the tot
adopted by Colleen and Mike
Alford, then of Ajax, three years
ago in Alexey's native Russia.
He was a sombre, small,
underweight boy when the
Alfords first saw him. He'd lived
most of his life in an orphanage
before the Alfords contacted
Canadian Homes for Russian
Children (CHRC), an organiza-
tion which arranges adoptions
between Russian children and
Canadian couples.
At the age of throe, Alexey
was wearing clothes designed for
18 -month-old babies and he
rarely smiled. He was diagnosed
as being developmentally
delayed. as were many Russian
children who have been adopted
from orphanages by Canadian
families in the last few years.
But healthy doses of attention,
love and nutritious food have
changed Alexey and his outlook.
He's going into Grade 1 with a
better -than -average grasp of spo-
ken English. not at all bad for
someone who knew only Russian
when he was adopted.
His mom says Alexey's fine
motor skills aren't up to par — he
hasn't quite mastered the art of
using scissors — but they're
working on those.
Now Alexey and his parents
are working hard to help another
couple bring to Canada another
Russian orphan through CHRC.
Randy and Joanne Caldecott, of
Walkerton, adopted two-year-old
Benjamin in April but have been
unable to bring him here as Cana-
dian immigration officials won't
issue him a visa because he's
deveiopmentally delayed, Mr.
Alford says.

"But the histories (of children
like Alexey and many others) are
showing they do not need the
help," Mrs. Alford says.
"What they need is support
from the family, love and atten-

says.

New domestic violence court slated for Durham

OSHAWA — The Province's decision to
put a new domestic violence court in Oshawa
is "a wonderful step;' says an official with a
Durham Region -based shelter for abused
women and children.
"The location of the court is wonderful for
women who need the services;" says Mary
Dumais, director of volunteer services for The
Denise House.

designed to break
the cycle of vio-
lence through
early intervention.
The model
focuses on first-
time offenders in
cases where the
victim doesn't suf-
fer any significant
physical injuries.
Participants must
plead guilty and
complete a batter -
ers' program. The victim must agree to the
batterers' participation in the program.
"I hope it speeds up the process," says Ms.
Dumais, noting for some women "it's years
sometimes before it (domestic violence)
comes to any form of resolution (in the
courts).
The Province will spend $5.2 million to
expand its Domestic Violence Court program
over the next four years, says Mr.
Flaherty.
Although she calls the announcement a
"wonderful step;" she also expressed "a bit of
concern around front-line services. We've
received major (financial) cutbacks. Women
in crisis situations need those front-line ser-
vices:'
Denise House served 176 women and 178
children in residence from January, 1996 to
March, 1997, notes Ms. Dumais.
Forty per cent of those women were from
Oshawa, 13 per cent from Whitby, live per
cent each from Ajax and Courtice, two per
cent each from Newcastle, Bowmanville and
Pickering and one per cent from Port Perry,
she says.
During the same time period Denise House
received 2,657 crisis calls and 245 women
received non-resident counselling, she says.

Lest we
forget our
proud vets
Though Canadians may never learn the true extent
of the internal military goings-on in relation to the
Somalia affair, it was made perfectly clear in this past
week's scathing inquiry report that it exposed the
complete absence of military leadership and account-
ability.
That conclusion drawn by Somalia inquiry com-
missioners, sadly, stains all of us.
In Durham Region. for instance, which has active
and established Royal Canadian Legion branches and
senior citizens who served honorably and effectively
in various military conflicts on behalf of their nation
and democracy, the Somalia inquiry conclusions mar,
by association, an otherwise proud tradition here.
It's important, therefore, that Canada continue to
scrutinize its military high command, clean house
once again if necessary, and focus on rebuilding a
military reputation of which Canadians are suitably
proud.
A visit to any of Durham's Royal Canadian Legion
branches in our communities illustrates our collec-
tive commitment to the ideals and sometimes violent
nature of the preservation of democracy.
Those residents who have served honorably, their
children, and their grandchildren, deserve the
restoration of the reputation the men and women of
the Canadian military have spent so long establish-
ing.
The 1,600 -page Somalia report details much about
what happened during our peace -keeping mission in
1993. What's needed now, as Defence Minister Art
Eggleton has suggested, is for us to turn the page on
the entire affair.
That doesn't suggest we sweep it under the rug.
The inquiry has acknowledged the high command's
neglect of duty, its absence of leadership and its fear
of exposure.
Let's focus on that and move forward to bring
back our sense of honor, duty and commitment.
Those in Durham who have served honorably
deserve it.

You know, I sometimes
wonder about this town of
Pickering that we like to call
home.
We witness a company on
Squire's Beach Road that is
filing for bankruptcy protec-
tion while still owing the
Town a large sum for road
improvements. Guess who is
going to foot the bill?
We have a fine new com-
munity facility in Claremont
which, unfortunately, ran
into major cost over -runs.
Once more the public
absorbs the cost of some-
body's error.
Now we are tendering out
a $600,000 youth park.
Councillor Doug Dickerson
asks to hold off approval for
a bit so Council can fully
understand what it is that it's
approving. He ends up being
slapped in an editorial, sim-
ply because he has been lis-
tening to his constituents and
paying attention to the
cheque -writing process.
Let's not even bring up
the wisdom of sending our
kids out to play in the elec-
tromagnetic field of a hydro
corridor. Still, Councillor
Dickerson must really be at a
loss to explain this lack of
caution amongst his col-
leagues.
I guess it must just be an
election year.

Keeping an eye on
the giant next door

That chorus from the Canadian pop diva's song bounced
loosely around inside my head Tuesday night as my family
and I made ourselves comfortable on a beach blanket at the
shore of Lake Ontario on the west side of Frenchman's Bay.
We ventured out around dusk on Canada Day to watch the
fireworks explode above Kinsmen Park on the east side of the
bay, and were joined by about 15 or 20 other families out on a
warm summer evening.
From our vantage point, looking as I was directly at the
hulking structure of the Pickering Nuclear Generating Station,
I pondered the colorful Canada Day explosions we anticipated
in the night sky, and the potentially explosive nature of nuclear
power.
While my son scampered along the shore line, stopping to
examine artifacts in the sand here, tossing %tomes in the water
there, my eyes were drawn repeatedly to the massive plant's
buildings and reactor silos, darkening quickly as the sun
slipped below the horizon behind me.
My mind's eye conjured images of the plant's interior and
reactors; long copper tubes vibrating as cooling water races
through them on its way to God -knows -where. the hissing and
popping of aging equipment as electric power is drawn from
pellets of uranium, faceless people in spacc-age suit.% shouting
commands and giving hand signals to equally faceless people
in command 3rd control centres.
It was all quite imaginative and inaccurate, I'm sure; but the
ink spilled in recent months over the problem -plagued plant (in
this newspaper and others) gives rise to such flights of fancy.
When dark fell and the fireworks began, it was eerie to
watch the explosions illuminate the plant in patterns of short,
sharp bursts of light. The booms accompanying the explo-
sio rm delayed as they were by distance and thick, humid air,
could easily be imagined as explosions of a more sinister
nature.
I turned my head slightly to watch the expression of awe on
my son's small, sun -freckled face as the fireworks lit the night
before him and realized, perhaps for the first time, how impor-
tant it is for me — for all of us — to ensure that the sleeping
giant we call the nuclear plant is forever safe and forever scru-
tinized.
In that moment of clarity I discovered a new-found respect
for the people at Durham Nuclear Awareness whom I had pre-
viously dismissed as slightly shrill environmentalists. I discov-
ered a new-found skepticism of the people at Ontario Hydro
who tun the station and a new-found commitment to inform
myself more fully of what goes on at the power plant next
door.
I want, you see, both of my sons to enjoy Canada's birth-
day for many, rnany years to come. They deserve it simply
because they are young, healthy and full of the promise of a
life that stretches out before them.
They do deserve that. We all do.

PICKERING — A Discover Your
Community Through Architecture work-
shop is being held ai Pickering Museum
Village Saturday, July 12 from 10 a.m. to
3:30 p.m.
The workshop is being offered in co-
operation with the Ontario Historical
Society and is designed to assist teachers,
youth leaders, parents, museum curators
and historical society workers.
In a session entitled 'Local History:
Where to Find It; How to Use It', OHS
executive director Dorothy Duncan will
challenge you to look right in your own
backyard for an abundance of ideas for
local history projects.
Alec Keefer of the Architectural Con-
servancy of Ontario will present the video
Built to Last, illustrating the importance
of the buildings and structures around us
Anchors aweigh for
in our communities, and then discuss how
to create successful walking tours.
Katherine Ashenburg, award-winning
author of Going to Town: Architectural
Walking Tours in Southern Ontario, will
show participants how to link history with
their community's built environment in a
session entitled 'How to Read an Ontario

grams to share with others at the work-
shop.
Wooden Boat Weekend
NEWCASTLE – Set sail this summer at the
Port of Newcastle's Wooden Boat Weekend.
The annual show for nautical enthusiasts is
planned for July 25 to July 27 at the Port of New-
castle Manna.
"Anyone who's interested in anything nauti-
cal" will want to attend the event, says
Alison Woollacott, the marina's gener-
al manager. "Whether it's nautical
clothing or footwear or to look at some
wooden boats"
On hand will be different wooden
boats, displays of sailing equipment
and wooden boat makers demonstrat-
ing their craft. Interested sailors can
discuss the finer points of wooden
boats with boat owners.
In addition to last year's activities,
which gave children an opportunity to
make and sail their own miniature
boats, this year's event will offer sev-
eral different activities for the whole
family, including games for children
organized by the Optimist Club of
Newcastle Village says Ms. Woolla-
cott. There will also be live entertain-
ment and a barbecue.
On Sunday there'll be a pancake
breakfast and sail past.
"We're expanding this year,
explains Ms. Woollacott, adding the
organizing committee is hoping to see
attendance at the event double last
year's figures.
The event is being widely publicized and is
included in the Municipality of Clarington's
Tourist Guide.

AN INVESTMENT IN
YOUR FAMILY'S FUTURE
Estate planning is a subject that most
Canadians avoid. There are many reasons.
They believe that it's only for the -rich" and
that the costs are prohibitive. There is also the
natural human response to dealing with the
issue of death. People procrastinate. They put
it off.
Estate planning is one of the most important
aspects of your financial plan. A suitable estate
plan will minimize taxes and allow the distri-
bution of estate assets in a low cost manner
that will properly reflect your wishes and
intentions.
Your will forms the cornerstone of the estate
plan. It is crucial to have a valid will. In
Ontario, as in most provinces, the assets of a
person who dies without a will, or "intestate"
are distributed according to a rigid formula. If
you want to leave an hctrloom to a favourite
relative and there is no will, that favourite rela-
tive is probably out of luck- While handwritten
wills arc generally acceptable and thcrc arc
many "do-it-yourself' packages available, it is
prudent to have a legal professional draw up
your will.
Death and taxes. While the former can't be
avoided, the latter can be munimized. Although
Canada doesn't have inheritance taxes per se,
many Canadians have capital gains on invea-
ments, cottages, businesses. etc. Depending on
your situation, trusts can be set up either prior
to death linter vivos trust) or after death itcst-
amentary trust) that may reduce taxes payable
or defer the payment of taxes to a later date.
Trusts are also useful in situations where the
intended beneficiaries are not capable of man-
aging the inheritance. Your financial advisor,
your lawyer or your accountant can provide
guidance in these areas and determine if a trust
is appropriate in your personal situation.
Probate is a process by which the court cer-
tifies a will's validity and confirms the execu-
tor's authority. The probating of a will is nec-
essary in some instances. For example, many
financial institutions, land transfer agents and
public stock transfer agents require a will be
probated before releasing the assets to the
bencficiarics. In Ontario, probate fees are 5%
of the first 550,000 and 1 5% of the balance. A
$500,000 estate. which is not usually targe,
would generate $9.250 in fees payable to the
Ontario government. Probate fees can be low-
ered by reducing the amount of assets subject
to the probate process. This is usually done by
appointing beneficiaries for RRSPs and
RRIFs, holding assets in joint tenancy or trans-
ferring assets to a trust. Again, you profes-
sional advisor can assist you.

kids in Pickering
PICKERING — A Vacation Bible Camp is being
offered July 14 to 18 at St. Paul's on -the -Hill Anglican
Church in Pickering.
The camp is open to all children from seven to 13 years
of age, and day care is available both before and after the
camp day, which runs from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Activities for participants will include games, a puppet
theatre, crafts, special events and bible readings.
Cost of the camp is $30 for the first child in a family
and $15 for each additional child. Day care for two hours

Sobbing uncontrollably, Christine Alexander
admitted Thursday in court she shot her
estranged husband in the head but swore, "I never
wanted him dead"
Mrs. Alexander, who has pleaded not guilty to
attempted murder, broke down during her third
day of testimony while under intense cross-exam-
ination by Assistant Crown Attorney Lisa
Cameron.
David Alexander, who separated from his wife
prior to the shooting, was at the couple's Bow-
manville home helping her move out when she
shot him with a .22 calibre hunting rifle Nov. 2,
1995, court has heard.
Mrs. Alexander, 48, testified she had sex with
Mr. Alexander moments earlier hoping he would
consider reconciling, but he ignored her pleas to
save their 22 -year marriage.
Mrs. Alexander, who says her husband for
years tormented her with verbal abuse, again
pleaded with him to "work things out" as he tried
to fix a broken basement water pump.
At the time, Mr. Alexander, 47, was acting
strangely, "scaring me," she said. "When David
got angry the whites of his eyes would show and
that's what happened"
Mrs. Alexander said she went into the laundry
room where, although she can't remember, she
then must have loaded her husband's Cooey hunt-
ing rifle. She then waited for him to enter the
recreation room.
As Mr. Alexander walked in, she pointed the
gun and, "I shot him.
Seventh Day Adventists in Oshawa for camp
OSHAWA — About 4,000 Seventh -day
Adventists from around Ontario were in
Oshawa this week for their annual camp
meeting.
The gatherings are a tradition with Sev-
enth Day Adventists that date back about a
half -century, says Dirk Zinner of the orga-
nization.
This year's event marks a return to
Oshawa after the camp meeting was held
in Kitchener and Toronto for the past six or
seven years, he says. The camp meeting
was held at Kingsway College in the King
Street-Townline Road area of Oshawa and
wrapped up Saturday night.
"The purpose is to have a spiritual gath-
ering;' says Mr. Zinner.
"It's primarily for Seventh -day Adven-
tists, but any non -Seventh -day Adventist is
certainly welcome. It's not an exclusive
thing"
The main speaker for the event was
Stephen Wallace, who is engaged in con-
ducting revival ministry.
"I just remembered I seemed robotized... I
just felt like I was a robot," she said. "I know that
I did it but I don't remember pulling the trigger."
Mrs. Alexander said she rushed to Mr. Alexan-
der, who was lying on the floor bleeding heavily,
and held him, "telling him to lie still and I'll get
an ambulance.
"The blood kept coming out and it was going
everywhere... He started trying to get up and I
kept telling him I was sorry and I loved him...
He just wouldn't lie still"
She said her husband got up to his knees and
leaned over her "trying to choke me;' so she
struck him on the head twice with the barrel of
the rifle.
As the two struggled, Mrs. Alexander admit-
ted she blocked the door barring Mr. Alexander —
who managed to rip the door in half. She wanted
to stop him from leaving "to prove to him if he let
me get the ambulance it would show him that I
was really sorry and I didn't mean it:'
"Were you going to wait for him to die."
asked Ms. Cameron.
"No:' replied the defendant.
Ms. Cameron suggested to Mrs. Alexander she
decided there was "no alternative" other than
murdering her husband when she realized the
marriage was over and that she may lose her two
sons, whom he was seeking sole custody of.
"That was your life and it was about to walk
out on you... You didn't shoot him in the leg, you
didn't shoot him in the arm. You shot him in the
head." said the Crown.
"Isn't it true that... when you realized he was-
n't dead you started beating him to get him back
on the floor to make sure he was dead?.
Crying almost hysterically, Mrs. Alexander
denied trying to kill her husband, saying. " I loved
him too much and I know I would have lost the
boys if David had died.. .
..[just kept hoping he would be OK and when
I found out that he was OK I thanked God he did-
n't die. I never wanted him dead:"
The bullet which struck Mr. Alexander
remains lodged at the base of his skull near the
spinal cord.
Closing arguments in the case were scheduled
for Friday.

FARMER'S MARKETS
Nothing beats a trip to the farmer's market for a
taste of nostalgia and guaranteed fresh produce.
Here are three Durham markets open to the
public all summer long:
Oshawa Centre Farmer's Market; Oshawa
Centre East parking lot; Fridays, May to October
8 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Strawberry tips for picking and storing
Look for plump, bright red and fully ripe
berries. Caps should be attached and should be
green and fresh -looking.
Size of the berries is not important. All
,,trawberries, large and small, are equally sweet
and juicy.
Raspberries
Select berries that are bright, fresh, plump,
well -shaped, and solid in color. Clean,
unstained boxes are an indication of fresh,
unbruised fruit.
PICK YOUR OWN - TIPS:
• Phone ahead to ensure the operation is
open and that berries are available.
• Use shallow containers to avoid crushing
the berries that are on the bottom.
• Wear loose and cool clothes that cover
arms and legs to avoid scratches and sunburn.
This fondue takes less than half
an hour to prepare. Stir in liqueur
just before serving. Leftovers
make an excellent ice cream top-
ping.

chocolate, broken into small
pieces

ened chocolate,
Most of all, do not forget sunscreen.
• To pick the berries, cut them in your hand
and snap the stem between your thumb and
forefinger.

Raspberries: 500 mL (I pint/2 cups): 4 servings
HOW SOLD
Ontario strawberries are sold in "flats" or
masters which contain eight I L (I quart)
boxes, wrapped or unwrapped. Ontario rasp-
berries are sold in pints and half pints.
New products are harvested on a more rigid
schedule. Picked daily when it is cool and dry,
stored immediately and air-cooled for sale that
day or the following morning.
175 mL (2/3 cup) raspberry
liqueur
Stir first six ingredients togeth-
er in the top of a double boiler
over barely simmering water.
Cook, stirring frequently until the
chocolate and butter have melted
and the sugar has dissolved.
Before serving, stir in liqueur
until thoroughly
blended. Serve
with strawberries
ready for dipping.

broken into small pieces
625 mL (2 1/2 cups) fine sugar
500 mL (2 cups) heavy cream
200 mL (3/4 cups) unsalted butter,
cut into small pieces
dash salt

Zwieback crack-
ers
50 mL (1/4 cup)
butter, melted
11 nu., k i taoiespoon) sugar
500 g (16 oz.) light cream cheese
125 mL (1/2 cup) sugar
2 egg yolks
5 mL (1 teaspoon) grated orange
Peel
15 mL (1 tablespoon) lemon juice
2 stiffly beaten egg whites
250 mL ( I cup) sour cream
25 mL (2 tablespoons) sugar
5 mL (I teaspoon) vanilla extract
500 mL (2 cups) fresh Ontario
strawberries or raspberries
Lightly grease a 22.5 cm (9 -
inch) round, microwave -safe bak-
ing dish. In a small bowl, combine
first three ingredients, press into
bottom of baking dish. Microwave
on HIGH, uncovered, two min-
utes.
Set aside. In a large mixing
bowl, beat cream cheese and 125
mL (1/2 cup) sugar togethdr until
light and fluffy. Add egg yolks,
one at a time, beating well after
each addition. Beat in orange peel
and juice. Fold in stiffly beaten
egg whites. Pour into prepared
baking dish, smooth with a spatu-
la. Microwave on HIGH six min-
utes.
In a small bowl, combine sour
cream, remaining sugar and vanil-
la until well blended. Carefully
spread over top of cheesecake.
Microwave on HIGH one minute.
Arrange berries on top of cheese-
cake as desired and chill several
hours before serving.

AJAX — The Ajax United Blues
have been giving their soccer oppo-
nents the blues lately.
The under -13 girls rep soccer team,
sponsored by The Soccer Connection,
won three straight games recently to
improve its regular -season record to
five victories and two losses.
Ajax United blanked both the
Darlington Reactors and Scarboro
United Lightning 6-0 and defeated the
Whitby Storm 6-4.
Leading the scoring parade in the
three -game winning streak were
Carlene Siopis with eight goals, Jen
Bikow with four and Kelly Mcdowell
with three. Netting singles were
Lindsay Kobold, Melanie Macchione
and Megan Rooney.
Strong defensive play was turned
in by Sarah Ripley, Sarah Playfair,
Lindsay Stirrat, Andrea Mee. Nicole
O'Brien, Kerri Dudley and midfield-
ers Samantha McBean and Sarah
MacKay. Krystle Brown and Jennifer
Savage played well in net.

players of all abilities can
hone their skills at a camp
being held the next two
weeks in Ajax.
The Soccer Connection
will host its annual summer
camp the weeks of July 7 to
1 I and July 14 to 18 at the
Ajax Community Centre.
Open to children five to
16 years old, the camp will
run under the direction of
Soccer Connection head
coach Mark Purdy, who has
played professionally in
Canada and abroad, and has
been involved in training
for a number of years. An
experienced team of coach -
es, including professional
and provincial players, will
put the youngsters through
their paces.
Three levels of training
are offered — Tiny Tots
Skills and Drills for kids
five to seven, Beginners,
and Rep/Select. Players will
be assigned to the different
levels based on their abili-
ties.
Full-day sessions run
from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and
half-day sessions from 9 to
noon. Costs range from $70
to $120.
