House fire cause
$200,000 damag
B), MARIANNE T.AKACS
5F FT REPORTER
AJAX — A Dailey Street family
escaped from their burning house unin-
jured Wednesday morning thanks to the
quick action of one of their neighbors.
The fine at the home of Dino and
Colleen Camino of 36 Dariey St. in the
Pickering Village area broke out shortly
before firefighters were called to the
scene at 9:23 a.m. Ms. Camino and their
two children, seven-year-old Dean and
five-vear-old Brlttm, were inside the
house at the time and were alcried to the
blaze by their neighbor across the street,
Kim McCann.

boat (on the Castinos' driveway);' recalls
Ms. McCann. After that, she says, it took
only seconds for the blaze to envelop the
garage and front of the house.
"It was up so quickly it was unbeliev-
able. Before I knew it the flames were as
high as the house. Thank God I was out
there. I was the only one out on the
street.
Ms. McCann's first thought was to
run through the Caminos' open front
door to alert the family to the blaze but
flames from the garage were already
licking at the entrance.
A just ran over to the lawn and yelled
'Colleen, the house is on fire'. I just

Pickerin to lose hazardous wdepot
Ritson Road contaminated oils and pool Pickering waste and agreed to reason for rejecting the pr
transfer station
will be nearest
facility after July
BY MARIANNE TAKACS
STAFF REPORTER
Get ready to stockpile your
old cans of paint or make a long
trip to get rid of them.
It appears Ajax and Pickering
residents will be without a place
to dispose of household haz-
ardous waste as of the end of
July and a new one is not likely
to be in place until the winter.
That will mean residents
wanting to properly dispose of
items such as paints, pesticides,
chemicals will need to take
them to Durham Region's Kit-
son Road landfill in
Oshawa.
Pickering Council
recently turned down a
request from Durham
Region for Town sup-
port for an application
to the Ministry of
Environment and Ener-
gy for a certificate of
approval to operate a
household hazardous
waste depot at the
Durham Materials
Recover Facility at
1220 Squires Beach
Rd. in Pickering.
DMRF already operates a
transfer station for Ajax and
let the Region use its front park-
ing lot as a drop-off location for
household hazardous
waste at no charge.
The Region would
then collect the waste
and deliver it to the
Oshawa facility for
processing and dispos-
al.
However, DMRF is
experiencing financial
problems and is cur-
rently under court pro-
tection from its credi-
tors.
Pickering councillors
who voted against sup-
porting the Region's
application cite the uncertain
future of the company as their

posed hazardous waste depot.
"Until we're absolutely sure
who has that station and who's
operating it we don't want to
open up another problem;" says
Ward 2 Regional Councillor
Doug Dickerson.
Mayor Wayne Arthurs says it
was "prudent" to defer the issue
"until we had some sense of
what was going to happen there
corporately."
Ward 3 Regional Councillor
Rick Johnson was among those
who urged Council to support
the Region's request.
"We won't have a facility
anywhere in Ajax -Pickering," he
warned at the meeting where it
was considered. "My fear is (the

,..Ajax and Pickering residents may `currently take
heir hazardous waste to the Brock West facility
owned by Metropolitan Toronto at Brock and Third
;;Concession Roads in Pickering.
But that facility is expected to close for good at the
end of July, says Durham Region manager of waste
management Peter Watson, under the same out-of-
court settlement between Metro and Pickering which
_17,closed Brock West to regular waste at the end of
,November.
Mayor Arthurs said Pickering Council may recon-

aider the Durham Region proposal at its Aug. 5 meet-
ing.
But even if Council approves it then, eIxplains Mr.
Watson, the Region will still have to apply for a cer-
tificate of approval from the MOEE and it's "not
uncommon 7 to have to wait four to six months to get
one.
"We're n6i making application to the ministry

Durham Regional Police estimate the

it was probably the result of an electrical

of the garage.
Most of the damage was to the front

to savings
Ajax Council members have seen the light.
So, some day soon, town taxpayers may see the
savings.
Council's general govemment committee has rec-
ommended the establishment of a joint co-ordinating
committee with Pickering officials to review ways
the Towns can save their taxpayers money.
The joint co-ordinating committee would look at
how the two towns' fire and transit departments can
work together to provide cheaper service, such as
splitting the cost of expensive equipment.
For example, both towns' fire departments are
using aging dispatch equipment that needs to be
replaced.
"There's a splendid opportunity to save significant
dollars" if the two Towns purchased the equipment
together, reports Ajax chief administrative officer
Richard Parisotto.
He also believes Ajax and Pickering could split the
$1 -million cost of an aerial -ladder fire truck, thus
saving the taxpayers of each town $500,000.
Mr. Parisotto has met with Pickering counterpart
Tom Quinn to identify areas where the two Towns
could join forces to save money, particularly the fire
and transit departments, by joint tendering and buy-
ing, co-ordinating services, sharing staff and loaning
equipment.
But, the bureaucrats shouldn't narrow their focus
to just the fire and transit departments to find areas
where they can cut costs and save you money.
"W'e want to participate in anything that will save
the Town of Ajax tax dollars," says general govern-
ment committee chairman and Ward 4 local
Councillor Pat Brown.
That seems like a considerable shift in philosophy
by the people who run Ajax. Not long ago, they
appeared unwilling to share any relationship with
Pickering, fearing any perception there was a 'merg-
er' afoot.
What's most encouragingis Mr. Parisotto's recom-
mendation to Ajax councillors that the two Towns
,.professionally and in a business -like fashion"
address ways they can save tax dollars.
We welcome this slight shift in thinking on the
part of Ajax politicians. It's a shift that should result
in savings for the taxpayers of both Ajax and
Pickering.

v Letters to the editor
Stornoway makes
sense for Mr. Manning
To the editor:
Re: Preston Manning, the sell out -
June 24
While being the first to say that
Preston Manning's move into
Stornoway wasn't the brightest thing
he's ever done, a few more points need
to be said about this:
a) The Leader of the Opposition
receives the residence of Stornoway, a
bullet-proof limo to ride in and an
RCMP bodyguard. This is to protect
the life of such an important public fig-
ure. Stornoway is secure. To secure
another residence to those standards
would require an enormous amount of
money.
b) The Leader of the Opposition
requires a facility to host visiting dig-
nitaries and perform other official
functions in a fashion that does our
country proud. Stornoway fits this bill.
c) Stornoway represents the office
of the Leader of the Opposition. To
refuse the dignity and respect of that
office is to spit in the eye of Canadian
tradition. The actions of Lucien
Bouchard illustrated this in his refusal
to accept the house.
d) Last but not least, the govern-
ment of Canada already owns
Stornoway. It costs thousands of dol-
lars per year to maintain the building,
whether or not it is occupied. The real-
ity is the implementation and mainte-
nance of a new facility that performs
all the functions of Stomoway would
be extremely expensive and would
greatly exceed the costs of living in
Stornoway.
While Mr. Manning made the mis-
take of moving into Stornoway after
saying he would not, his real mistake
was shortsightedness in his comments
of several years ago.

Who needs
a GTSB?
I'm having a problem with a Greater
Toronto Services Board because a gener-
ation from now it will have evolved into a
governmental monster.
Ontario Municipal Affairs Minister Al
Leach and provincial adviser Milt Farrow
both say a GTSB won't be another level
of government and it will have limited
authority without the power to impose
taxes. That's today, but what about 20
years from now?
Consider history. When the Metro
Toronto level of government was set up, it
didn't have taxing powers and was only
established to co-ordinate services. And.
there's another piece of history one
should consider — the fact that income
taxes were only imposed as a temporary
measure to help pay for the First World
War.
Politicians who argue the GTSB isn't
needed will be seen as fighting to keep
their jobs. That might be the case t'tr
some. No( that I want to argue the plight
of poor politicians, but they know gov-
ernment and how it works. And the,
know what will happen with a GTSB.
If a GTSB is set up, something is
goring to go and it will be regional gov-
ernment. You can argue that losing
regional government would be a positive
thing. But, if you think the Region is a
remoe entity, just give some thought to
how isolated a GTSB would be. Or, to put
it another way, do you think a Toronto
councillor or a Mississauga mayor will
care about your problem?
GTSB proponents say it's needed to
settle disputes between regions, co-ordi-
nate services in the Greater Toronto Area
and run GO Transit. Those are all things
the Province could and should be doing.
Here's what I think should happen.
Take power away from the regions and
give it to the municipalities. Keep the
regions but turn them into service boards.
There is one positive to come out of all
the talk of a GTSB and that's to get
municipal politicians scrambling to look
at ways of saving money. For that, tax-
payers should pat Mr. Leach on the back.

Why the Internet through cable?
Simple answer: It's the natural way to
receive full motion, real-time, high -bandwidth
video and audio. These services, now called
multimedia, were once called television.
Cable provides the biggest pipeline into your
home. It can carry a lot more information
into, and away from, your computer than a
Ultelephone line. Plugged in through
a high-speed cable modem, WAVE
wave'
.delivers the Internet with download
speeds up to 10,000 kbps. That's about 350
times faster than through a 28.8 modem.
And now the best part. The requirements for
today's Internet technology do not even come
Y
close to the full capacity of Shaw's electronic
pipelines. That means WAVE will be your
connection to the next generation of totally
interactive, high -bandwidth Internet toys.
It's also why a WAVE connection will cause
no disruptions to your television service.
After all, when was the last time you sat
down in front of your telephone to watch a
big -screen action thriller in surround sound?

Durham Lighthouse has found a new home.
The lighting showroom, which has been established in Pickering for
seven years has moved from the Pickering Home and Leisure Centre to
Mackenzie Plaza in Ajax. Locally owned and operated by Wally Zwarych, a
man with more than 20 years experience in the lighting and electrical
business, is in the store from open to close to provide optimum service
to his customers.
The new location boasts an outstanding variety of ceiling fans and
lamps in different colors and finishes. From fine, hand -painted porcelain
lamps, to extravagant crystal chandeliers there is a style to compliment
any decor. The porcelain lamps, available in a selection of floral patterns
and colors are specially priced at $99.99, 50% off the regular price. Mr.
Zwarych says the crystal chandeliers have made a comeback and he
offers a special crystal cleaner which is sprayed on the chandelier and
evaporates after it's polished. He notes his customers find it easier to
maintain the chandelier by not having to remove the fixture from the
ceiling. „
Durham Lighthouse's fans range from intricate marble to brass to a
wide selection of popular rod iron.
Halogen lights, the closest facsimile to natural sunlight, is available for
all lighting fixtures. Halogen is energy efficient and saves on monthly
electrical bills. Replacement bulbs are available.
Call 428-6686. The showroom is at 2.50 Bayly St., Ajax, in the same
plaza as Honey Garlic, Pizza Hut, Dairy Queen and Goodwill. .

Does your lawn need
an apple a day?
BY DR. ELLEN HENKE
SPECIAL TO THE NEWS ADVERTISER
"An apple a day keeps the doctor
away"
Or so they say. We all know that an
apple alone isn't all it takes for good
health. Our nutritional needs are some-
what more complex than that ... and so
are your lawn's.
Most of us accept that our lawns must
be watered and mowed for good health,
but many of us think that fertilizing our
lawns is optional. It really isn't.
Grass has a tough life. Grass plants are
thrown into the soil, crowded together in
competition for water and nutrients with
each other, neighboring trees and shrubs.
For grass plants, it's survival of the fittest,
and lawns must be fertilized for grass
plants to have a chance at survival.
Just as most people's bodies demand
three square meals a day, your lawn
demands two square meals a year — one
feeding a month after the lawn starts
growing and another feeding a month
before your lawn goes dormant.
Spring fertilization is necessary to
replenish your lawn's food reserves that
have been used up in the first flush of
spring growth.
During the fall, your lawn is storing
food in the root system to allow it to grow
underground during the dormant season,
so the fall fertilization is the most impor-
tant one of all.
What does your lawn need'? Grass
plants need three essential nutrients.
Nitrogen is needed for a healthy green
color and grass blade growth. Phosphorus
promotes healthy root development and
potassium provides for disease and
drought resistance.
To determine how much of these nutri-
ents your lawn needs, experts suggests
that you conduct a soil test by taking sev-
eral random plugs of soil from around the
lawn.
Dig down six to eight inches for the
samples. Remove any grass blades, roots
and stems. Mix the soil and label it
"Lawn"
Send your soil samples to a county
extension agent, university turf specialist
or soil test lab.
The lab results will tell you the pH of
your soil, if it's too acid or too alkaline,
plus the major nutrients your soil needs.
And while an apple a day may not
keep the doctor away, the lawn do:, that
is — proper nutrition and proper care the
whole year through — will help your lawn
bounce back from the stress of dry spells,
insects and disease.

27.2 per cent improvement.
"It was a particularly fine month for Buick,
with Skylark, Park Avenue and the all-new,
Oshawa -built Century sedan combining for a total
increase sales of those brands, year-to-year, of
more than 200 per cent," says Dick Conlin, GM of
Canada's vice-president of marketing, in a news
release.
"Overall, GM of Canada is closing in on a quar-
er-of-a-million cars and trucks sold or leased in
he first half of the year."
During the first six months of 1997, GM has
sold 227,166 vehicles, a 12.9 per cent increase in
sales over the same time period in 1996, when the
company delivered 201,182 vehicles.
"With the level of consumer confidence appear-
ing to be at the highest it has been in quite some
time, for many Canadians the timing seems to be
right to purchase that new car or puck they have
been looking at," says Mr. Conlin.
In addition to the strong performance of Buicks
and other Oshawa -made vehicles, sales of the
Saturn SC rose 141.9 per cent, the Pontiac Grand
Prix was up 76.3 per cent, Cadillac sales increased
62.8 per cent and Chevy Astro and GMC Safari
mid-size vans were up 55 per cent.
For the 1997 model year, sales are up 11.4 per
cent to 316,997, with truck sales up 14.8 per cent
to 138,862 and car sales up 8.9 per cent to
178,135.
GM's strong June comes on the heels of a solid
May, when sales rose 9.2 per cent.
The company delivered a total of 45,364 vehi-
cles in May.
