PICKERING —'The Atomic Energy Con-
trol Board has decided to maintain its
short leash on the Pickering Nuclear
Generating Station.
After a relicensing hearing in
Ottawa„ the AECB announced Thurs-
day the power plant would get only a
nine-month renewal of its operating
licence, even though AECB staff had
recommended a one-year term. The
station was coming off a limited six-
month licence granted last December
after a series of operational and safety
media release issued by the board after its deci-
sion. "The short-term renewal indicates that the
board needs to see more tangible results from
the various commitments made by Ontario
Hydro, in order to determine the effcc-
tiveness of changes implemented at the
stations, and to gain confidence with
respect to their sustainability:'
The board also directed Pickering
station officials to come back in five
months to report on progress, particu-
larly with regard to improvements in
compliance with operational proce-
dures and in maintenance.
Barry Parsons, the AECB's senior

Ajax -Pickering hospital
board set for new term
Ajax -Pickering General Hospital has chosen its board
of directors for the 1997-98 term.
At the hospital's 43rd annual general meeting June 17,
one new member was elected to the board and four
incumbents were re-elected. Susan Price of Ajax was wel-
comed to the board. Mrs. Price has a strong background
in nursing and the financial services industry.
Those re-elected were James Sweeney of Pickering,
David Sinclair of Ajax, Angela Bober of Ajax and Druce
Ayres of Ajax.
A new chairman, Gale Mossman, was elected at a sub-
sequent meeting of the board.
Mrs. Mossman takes over the position from Doug
McKay, who has completed his term and now moves into
the position of past chairman. The board also elected Mr.
Sinclair to the position of treasurer and Warren Hurren as
vice-chairman.
Other members of the 1997-98 hospital board are
Bruce Cliff (hospital president and CEO). Wayne Adams,
Joe Brown, Ralph Sutton, Bob Forsey, Pat Brown (Town
of Ajax representative), Dave Ryan (Town of Pickering
representative), Nancy Maxwell (chairman of the hospital
foundation), Roger Anderson (Durham Region represen-
tative), Betty Robinson (hospital auxiliary president),
Catherine Tunney (Whitby General Hospital representa-
tive). Dr. Carman Price (chief of staff), Dr. Hans Weber
(medical staff president) and Dr. Keyna Bracken (medical
staff vice-president).

Ontario Hydro plans to "rapidly
accelerate" its improvement pro-
gram, according to Mr. Talbot.
Changes will be based on the Inte-
grated Independent Performance
Assessment of all its nuclear stations
recently undertaken by Ontario
Hydro.
A report on this comprehensive
review of all aspects of operation by
teams of experts brought in for the
purpose is Currently being drawn up
and is expected to be presented to
Ontario Hydro's board of directors
Aug. 12.
"We need to do it faster anyway,"
notes Mr. Talbot.
"One of the concerns we had is
our improvement processes weren't
as fast as they should have been.

PICKERING — The stars came
out in Pickering Wednesday night.
Heroes from the world of sports
came to town to be recognized for their
achievements at the inaugural induc-
tion dinner for the Ontario
Sport Legends Hall of Fame
at the Pickering Recreation
Complex.
More than 350 people
from the world of sport, busi-
ness leaders, municipal,
provincial and federal politi-
cians came to pay homage to
the 24 inductees honored for
their contribution to sport in
the province at the black -tic
affair emceed by former
hockey commentator Brian
McFarlane and television&
anchorman Ken Shaw.
Among those ushered into —
the complex to the sound of bagpipes
were former world and Canadian
champion figure skater Petra Burka,
cx-Canadian heavyweight boxing
champ George Chuvalo, one-time
Toronto Blue Jays' pitching great Dave
Stieb, former outstanding Ottawa
Rough Riders quarterback Russ Jack-
son, perennial Canadian amateur
women's golf champ Marlene Stewart
Streit and Canadian boxing great
Sammy Luftspring.
The induction into the Ontario hall
of fame is a great milestone for Chuva-
lo, the long-time Canadian heavy-
weight boxing champion who was
never knocked down in his ring career,
including two bouts with former world
heavyweight champ Muham-
mad Ali in the '60s.
Chuvalo grew up in Toron-
to, began his boxing career
there and most of his bouts
were held there.
"I had more fights here (in
Toronto) than anywhere else,
so it's a great honor. It's
always nice to be recognized.
I've lived here most of my
life, except for a year in
Detroit. I had a lot of big
fights here early in my career
in my late teens and early
20s;" notes Chuvalo.

We're lucky to
be Canadians
Forget Lucien Bouchard for a minute.
Preston Manning, too.
Forget politics altogether – even the dreaded 'U' word
– and focus, if you will, on what makes this country great
for you.
As you read this, people on your street, in your neigh-
borhood, your town, your province, and your country, are
likely thinking about this great land and what it represents
to them, from sea, to sea, to sea.
Think about Canada and what it represents to you as
the nation's birthday nears. Think about our rich history.
Think about our common future and the vital need for us
to find it.
Think about our soldiers on the beaches at Normandy
in 1944, Team Canada in 1972, Marc Garneau in 1983
and Donovan Bailey in 1996.
Think about Terry Fox, former Canadian Ambassador
Ken Taylor, Roberta Bondar, Stephen Leacock, Laura
Secord, and Glenn Gould.
Think about your children and your grandchildren,
who may well grow up to contribute something substan-
tial and lasting to the greater good of this nation.
Think about our cultural mosaic and its lofty princi-
ples. Examine the efforts of those who have dedicated
their lives to encourage tolerance, respect for diversity and
growth within that laudable framework:.
Give a thought to those who have gone before us, often
in difficult circumstances, to make our lives better today.
Ponder what more is to come from great -Canadians -in -
waiting.
Finally, give yourself a pat on the back for being a part
of this great nation. We certainly have our fair share of
problems to deal with, but overcoming adversity is a part
of our very fabric.
We celebrate Canada's 130th birthday on Tuesday.
Take a moment to notice the flag, recognized around the
world as a symbol of liberty, diversity and tolerance.
Remember for the last four years running, the United
Nations has recognized Canada as the very best nation to
live in.
We have a lot to be thankful for. Even today. Especially
today.

To the editor:
Why all the press, political and
public censure of Preston
Manning's flip-flop in deciding to
live in Stornoway after all? We
know Preston is concerned about
having the debt paid down, all
provinces equal, and 1 suppose all
Canadians just as equal.
One always has to be careful
when a guy like Preston has failed
at being a radio preacher and opts
to stow away aboard the political
ship like the Old Testament
prophet Jonah, whom God sent to
the ancient city of Nineveh to
warn its inhabitants of coming
judgment. Things did not work
out well for Jonah, if you know
the story. Jonah's greatest ene-
mies became the sailors aboard
the ship. He was tossed overboard
to continue his journey in the guts
of a whale, preaching that is, not
politics.
I do not really think Preston is
in charge. Either he has to listen
to Sandra, his caucus, the public
or whomever. He appears to be a
boy trying to do a man's job. Just
imagine having a man like that,
who cannot make decisions,
being the leader of this country.
We will see how he makes out in
opposition.

father, Ernest C. Manning. I used
to think his theology was a little
mixed up or far-fetched; no won-
der he has ended up in politics
with a strange mixture of "politi-
cal witchcraft" intended to make
everybody equal.
I do not think we need to
worry about Preston for the time
being. He will be bounced from
within. He is a stowaway and will
eventually be tossed overboard by
his own party. There are others
who are more greedy for
Stornoway. Right now he is aban-
doning all his scruples to escape
detection, but no amount of
chameleon tricks will save him
from defeat from within.

The groundswell
that moved
Preston
There's a great hue and cry across this
great land about Preston Manning's decision
to rescind his previous decision and move into
a bingo hall.
The political commentators who are so
profound that insight oozes out of them are
now spewing venom from their various ori-
fices over the Reform Party leader's flip-flop
that has he, the Missus and the kids packing
up the U -Haul and heading straight for
Stornoway.
They can't believe Mr. Manning was pres-
sured into switching accommodations from
the Nepean Hav-A-Nap to the Official
Opposition leader's Official Digs by a
groundswell of public support.
The only thing they see swelling is
Pinocchio Presto's nose.
Not so.
The evidence of the groundswell is every-
where.
I know I haven't been able to go on a beach
in Ontario since the election without spotting
topless women, usually in pairs (wash your
mouth with soap), strutting around in body
paint urging Mr. Manning to "mOve tO
StOrnOway", the Os placed in strategic
places.
On the last day of school, I didn't pass a
single group of students who weren't whoop-

Day with big bash for citizens
PICKERING — The Town
throws a day -long bash for the coun-
try's birthday Tuesday, featuring
tons of fun, food, fireworks and a
whole lot more.
Canada Day celebrations at Kins-
men Park on Sandy Beach Road run
from 9 a.m. when a softball tourney
begins at the south ball diamond to
almost 11 p.m. when Simon Pure
entertains the crowd still on hand
after the fireworks light up the
evening sky.
The softball tournament runs until
5 p.m., followed by the Mayor's
Invitational ball tourney from 5 to 6
and women's fastball from 6:30 to 8
p.m..
From noon to 5 p.m., there'll be
fun for the whole family, including a
youth beach volleyball tourney from
noon to 4, clowns and magicians,
jumping castles, penny arcade, pony
rides, bingo tent, karaoke, mini -car-
nival, face painting, roving musi-
cians and tae kwon -do demonstra-
tions for those in attendance.

A Bowmanville man whose wife is accused
of trying to kill him testified yesterday she
once pointed a rifle at him while he showered
and said violence was "natural" for her.
Christine Alexander, 48, is on trial for the
Nov. 2, 1995 shooting of her estranged hus-
band, David Alexander, who survived a gun-
shot blast to the side of the head.
Fragments of a .22 calibre bullet, which
entered the 47 -year-old man's cheek and pene-
trated his carotid artery, remain lodged two
millimeters from his spinal cord, court has
heard.
Mr. Alexander told a four -man, eight -
woman jury he separated from his wife of 22
years several weeks prior to the shooting, after
becoming fed up with repeated physical
attacks.
"It took me too long to do and there was no
turning back;' he said.
Mr. Alexander recalled one time showering
in the bathroom of the couple's Hwy. 2 home
in Sept. 1995 and finding himself staring down
the barrel of a rifle.
Mrs. Alexander, he testified, had entered the
bathroom and "pointed the gun right at me"
Unsure whether or not the weapon was
loaded, he grabbed the barrel of the rifle and
the two struggled for it.
"We stayed (continued) struggling out of the
bathroom, down the hallway and into the bed-
room," Mr. Alexander told prosecutor Lisa
Cameron. "She was holding onto the gun and
she wouldn't let go."
Mr. Alexander said he eventually managed
to wrestle away the weapon, which had not
been loaded.
In another incident which occurred one
month later — which he said ultimately drove
him to leave Mrs. Alexander — the pair got into
a heated argument and he left to go to a nearby
friend's home.
A short time later Mrs. Alexander showed
up, he said, and after he rebuked her attempts
to make up, she threw a power grinder at him
then attacked him with a wrench.
A violent struggle broke out in which he
was cut on the head and forced her to the
ground. "It was just another one of those argu-
ments," Mr. Alexander said in a soft-spoken
voice. "It was natural."
Mrs. Alexander has pleaded not guilty to 12
charges, including attempted murder, assault
with a knife, pointing a firearm and stalking
her husband in the months before the shooting.
On the day of the shooting, Mr. Alexander,
who was helping Mrs. Alexander move out,
entered the basement rec room, where he testi-
fied she then shot him.
Still conscious after the shooting, Mr.
Alexander said he fell to the ground and Mrs.
Alexander stood over his body, striking him
with the butt of the rifle and screaming "I love
you. If I can't have you nobody can"
During her cross-examination yesterday,
defence lawyer Katherine McLeod tried to cast
doubt on his claim Mrs. Alexander ever said
such words, noting he never mentioned it in
two statements to police.
"I didn't think it was important," he said.
"It's because it was never said... Otherwise
you would have put it in the statement," replied
Ms. McLeod.
The defence lawyer also questioned Mr.
Alexander why, as he has testified, he had sex
with his wife moments before the shooting.
Mr. Alexander said he reluctantly "gave into
her" persistent requests. "She was almost beg-
ging for me to take her to bed... She just did-
n't want to give up so I said OK"
Although he survived the shooting, it left
Mr. Alexander, who bears slight facial scarring
from the wound, with numerous health prob-
lems.
Among them, he said, are speech difficulties
and hearing problems, trouble keeping his
right eye open, no feeling in his chin or lower
mouth and frequent memory lapses.

given to Whitby Mental
Health Centre
WHITBY — The Whitby Mental Health
Centre has received a three-year accreditation
in recognition for the quality of its services
and programs.
The award was granted by the Canadian
Council on Health Services Accreditation, an
.organization which establishes national stan-
dards for medical institutions.
Representatives visited the Whitby facility
in March and recently released their report
which states the staff and management are to
be "commended" for "significant accom-
plishments," including the development of a
patient council, organizational changes at the
facility, mental health reform and the contin-
ued development of the community advisory
board.

Museum will be hosting a series of summer
workshops for children aged six to 12 years,
through the months of July and August.
They will be held on Wednesday after-
noons at the museum, 1450 Simcoe' St. S.,

Blaze in shed causes
$250,000 in damage
WHITBY — A blaze in a storage shed
beside a home on Garrard Road in Whitby
last Sunday caused $250,000 in damages and
sent a firefighter to hospital, says the Whitby
Fire Chief.
Fire Chief Tony Vandoleweerd says the
department was called to 103 Garrard Rd. at
10:58 a.m. Sunday morning after a garage
filled with collectibles caught fire. He says
there was "a lot of personal equipment" in the
shed, adding the home was not damaged by
the fire and none of the residents were
injured.
However, he says a firefighter was taken to
Oshawa General Hospital after being hit by
falling debris, adding the man was later
released and is expected to be off work for'a
few days.

Michael, who has just grad-
uated from Ajax High
School and will be studying
commerce at the University
of Windsor this fall.
"I'm a very proud Cana-
dian. I like the opportuni-
ties we have and the peo-
ple. Basically I'm very
patriotic.
He's also very busy at
school and in his communi-
ty. This year he was presi-
dent of the student council
at Ajax High, coached the
senior girls' basketball
team, was a peer tutor for
Grade 9 math students and
composed the music for the
school's Sears Drama Fes-
tival entry. He's also a
strong student academical-
ly, receiving As and Bs,
says teacher Carol Maher-
Hawken.
Michael is an accom-
plished musician, playing
the piano and other instru-
ments and composing
music. He's played at wed-
dings and more than 25
Durham Board of Educa-
tion functions. He provided
the entertainment and was
guest speaker at this year's
local Ontario Secondary
School Teachers' Federa-
tion annual awards ceremo-
ny.

This year, Michael also
won the Mary Baldwin
Award at Ajax High, a
scholarship from the
Durham Board of Educa-
tion, and a bursary from the

Niagara, the Pirates got
back on track with a deci-
sive 16-9 victory over a
Toronto squad in the sec-
ond game. The Pickering
bats were connecting in
back-to-back innings when
the Pirates sent 20 hitters
