William Shakespeare once wrote
"It is a wise father that knows his

Yet, it could be argued it takes a
wiser man to admit he's made mis-

right what once went wrong.
Doug Lee is such a father.

since.
"What happened was somebody
had taken my child away and said
you are never going to ser your son

obviously painful time in his life.
"When that happened I was devastat-

son does not wish to see me"
With few options left, he turned to the John
Howard Society for help.
" I said 'I'm in a lot of trouble and
1 don't want to live,"' he recalls of
his first words uttered over the phone
to the anonymous voice at the other
end.
It was there he met counselor
Sylvia Robillard, who, after hearing
of Mr. Lee's problem, admitted she
knew of no self-help group for
fathers. Frustrated and astonished by
what he heard. Mr. Lee teamed up
with Ms. Robillard and together they
created DADS of Durham - Dads D
Aiming for Direction and Support. ROI
The two founders had no model to Makin
replicate when they started the pro-
gram so decided to use Mr. Lee as the mold.
The result is an extensive, multi -faceted sup-
port group designed to help fathers deal with a
vast range of issues such as custody, relation-
ships, parenting skills and how to better under-
stand themselves as individuals and as parents.
"The first one was a pilot project;" says Ms.
Robillard of the launch of DADS on June
1. 1995. "Doug and 1 wanted to see if there was
a need for this kind of project. The
gentlemen in the group seemed to -
benefit so much from it that it
seemed to go on and on and finally
we had to stop it after about 42
weeks"
Since its inaugural year. DADS
has grown and developed a follow-
ing of fathers with different back-
grounds and ages, but all have two
primary things in common: children
and the desire to become better par-
ents.
Recently, the News Advertiser
was invited to sit in on one of the
group sessions and listened as
fathers talked about their feelings,
an emotional meeting. particularly
since it was just before Father's
Day.
I'm happy. I finally got it in
writing that I'm going to have him AL
on Father's Day:' says one dad
who's been granted the right to see
his son on an unscheduled day. -It',;
like a bonus" 1
He went on to describe his feel-
ings when his three-year-old son 1
greeted him at hie school recently
with a hug and a bag of crafts he had 1
matte him for Father's Day. One
item had wntten across it. "Mt
DAD"
Eric Hovland. another dad on
hand, admits he used to take a lot for
granted. but after a number of prw
lems with his children and his mar-
riage he decided to seek advice. For SAT
him. DADS has helped him to devel-
op patience and understanding
toward his five kids.
"Instead of losing my cool (with N.
my kids) I count to 10 and think
about it" before he unleashes his
anger, he says. "It's a big hurdle to
let them do what they want to do.
But. I'm getting there. I can handle Mon

Support
The DADS program is, in some ways, like a
social club where men go to share their feel-
ings, offer and receive support and develop
lasting friendships. It is, however, more than
just a place to go to enjoy the company of bud-
dies. The group deals with some dif-
ficult issues and many members
face some difficult decisions. But
they don't have to face their prob-
lems alone. Through the support and
sponsorship of the John Howard
I Society, fathers have access to a vast
number of resources from legal
advice to depression counselling.
For some, just knowing they have
some place to turn for support is
E enough.
"1 used to be skeptical of groups;'
:RTS says Mr. Hovland. "In here, it's
a point good. I'm not afraid to ask yues-
- tions and get a dose of reality:'

DADS of Durham or who just wants to talk

Of the society's funding comes frorr
ithe Ministry of Community and Social
Services.
On Jan. I, 1998, the Province will
take over all funding for Children's Aid
Societies in Ontario, so Mr. Dubray
spoke to the committee in the hope of
winning its support in the Durham
CAS's attempt to get more money
from Queen's Park.
The committee passed a recommen-
dation urging the Province to "address
the very serious under funding" the
Durham CAS faces. Regional Council
will deal with the matter at its meeting
on July 2.
Mr. Dubray said in an interview the
society's funding has "never been
increased. All the years it should have,
it wasn't.
Certain regions were more political-
ly astute and pursued funding.
"Now we find ourselves behind the
eight -ball. The four regions hounding
Metro are the four poorest (in terms of
money spent on CAS services);' Mr.
Dubray said.
The Durham so iety's staff of about
100 cares for approximately 530 chil-
dren a year and works with a total of
about 4,500 families.
"There's been a tremendous
inoaltase in the numbers in the last five

s Aid of Durham seeks funding for children
Durham is a growing area and will
continue to grow."
The Ontario coroner has called a
series of inquests across the province
to examine deaths of children involved
with Children's Aid Societies, two
involving deaths of youngsters in
Durham Region.
A six-year-old Clarington girl,
stabbed to death April 2, 1996 by her
father, was at the time receiving ser-
vices from the Metro Toronto CAS.
The inquest into her death is to start in
September in Whitby.
In another case, a "medically frag-
ile" 13 -year-old boy died of a bowel
obstruction while receiving services
from the Durham CAS.
The inquest into his death is expect-
ed to begin in January in Toronto.
(Children are considered medically
fragile if they are devcloprnentally
handicapped and have more than one
physical disability which is usually
life-threatening.)
The Interim Report of the Child
Mortality Task Force released in April
showed there were almost 3,200 child
deaths in Ontario in 1994 and '95. Of
that total. IW were known to Chil-
dren's Aid Societies in the Province

CAS.
Seven children known to the
Durham CAS died, including one child
in the care of the society. Of the seven
deaths, two were "medically fragile"
children, two died of sudden infant

a.m. or after 9 a.m.
Of the 19 schools in Pickering, seven
keep the same bell times, seven will start
later and live earlier. The principals were
consulted about time preferences and let-
ters are going out now to parents of
Catholic students to infirm them of the
changes for September. Mr. Trtxivich
said public board principals have already
informed parents of the changes.
Pickenng separate board trustee Jim
McCafferty said he's already received
calls from parents concerned about the
time changes, especially at schools
which will now start earlier, and how
they will affect their schedules or child
care arrangements. He said he's con-
cerned parents weren't consulted about
the times.
For the 1996-97 schoxtl year, the pub-
lic board tried the MapNet system in
Ajax and Pickering.
The board found students spent less
time on buses and often were picked up
later in the morning than under the old
system.
Some schools also indicated that par-
ents and students quickly became accus-
tomed to new schedules despite some
initial concerns.
The public board will be asked Mon-
day to approve a communications plan
under which schools and parents would
be consulted about any further betll-time
changes.

Police want
too much
Not content with a $2 -million increase in their
budget over last year -- in spite of seeing all other
regional departments' budgets (roicn -- Durham's
finest want even more of our tax dollars in a new
contract which would see a first-class constable get a
whopping nine -per cent pay increase.
While most collective agreements these days call
for pay increases of a few per cent, based on a negli-
gible rate of inflation coupled with extremely low
interest rates and slow recent economic growth, the
police association seems to feel it shouldn't have to
play by the same rules the rest of us do.
Most people are thrilled with a four- or five -per
cent increase and would sign on the dotted line
before the otter was rescinded. But not our cops.
With 82 per cent of police association members
voting against a decent four -per cent raise which
would see a first-class constable's salary rise from
551.175 to $53,56; under the offer made by the
Durham Regional Police Services Board. it looks like
the two sides are in for a battle.

Going
topless
Yes I did it -- on a recent hot
day. 1 threw my inhibitions to the
wind and took off my top.
1 didn't do it without thought. I
knew there might be repercussions,
perhaps even regret. It was after
all, the middle of the week, and I
was in business garb. But the glori-
ous June sunshine was too much to
ignore and so I surrendered, giving
into the heady feeling of driving
around topless.
Believe me, heading onto the
401 with no top is not all it's
cracked up to he. Some people
stare, it's true, but there are other
discomforts no one's told you
about.
Oh I know it looks romantic and
enticing as the topics% motorist
buzzes by hair floating in the
wind, catching some rays. The top-
less motorist looks like he/she is
having the most fun possible just
driving from point A to point B. At
least, it always koked that way to
me, a driver who always had a top.
But I should have realized looks
can he dccciving, and there are
scvcral good reasons to, k a v c your
top on, particularly during business
hours.
First, 1 struggle to remove the
I 1 -pound roof panel, careful not to
let it touch my suit jacket, fresh
from the dry cleaners. My efforts,
of course• only ensure several
smears of grease on my jacket.
which ends up crumbled in a hall
on the scat beside me. Then. 1 slap
on a baseball cap to keep my hair
from getting too wild.
Then it's off to the highway,
where the sun, beating down mer-
cilessly into my black interior,
challenges the product that's "so
effective you can skip a day." On I
drive topless, inviting envious
glances from other drivers, as I cat
exhaust fumes from buses and
transport trucks.
The highway pollution is so bad
I'm soon taking a detour to a road
less travelled. This is what topless
driving is all about — fresh air,
sparkling blue water, and construc-
tion zones. Soon, I am eating dust.
Covered in dust.
I arrive at my destination IS
minutes later, overly warm,.dishev-
cited, hat hair.
This, I remember too late, is the
reason I always leave my top on
and air conditioning turned up full
blast Monday to Friday.
I'm glad I tried it, this topless
business. But you're unlikely to
catch me without mine again.
At least until the weekend.

DEN updating 3Rs Household
Guide for Durham residents
The booklet 'A Household Guide
to Waste Reduction and Recycling in
Durham Region', printed to 1992 by
Durham Environmental Network
(DEN). is now undergoing revisions
and it's hoped it will be ready for
distribution by the end of this year.
The current booklet designed u)
offer 3Rs advice to residents is still
useful, however many telephone
numbers as well as information on
Durham Region programs need
updating.
For example, Durham Region has
made many changes in its programs,
one of which is expanding the Blue
Box collection to include all types of
paper, plastic bottles with the num-
ber I on the recycling logo, and alu-
minum pie plates.
As well, the opportunities to
recycle have increased for dispos-
able diapers. anti -freeze, old cars.
plastic bags, etc.
In addition to listing the non-
profit organizations which would
like to receive donations. DEN again
wishes to include, if space permits,
retailers specializing in reuse, repair
and recycling.
Project chairman Charles Kuno
has a committee of approximately
10 volunteers from across the region
to help revise DEN's booklet.
If you know of any organizations

or have new ideas you think should
be included in this handy 50 -page
guide, call 509-9390.
DEN is also looking for any cor-
porate sponsors to help fund the pro-
ject.
DEN's latest project, the 'State of
the Environment Poster Map', was
proudly unveiled to more than 50
people on May 22 by Gail Lawlor
and Helen Break. The map drew
admiration for the team of volun-
teers involved in its creation and
production.
Two copies are now being distrib-
uted to every library, school, and
municipality throughout the region.
if you would like to receive a map,

Durham girl's
backyard
concerts a hit
By St SAN O'Niiu.i.
nlatHAM STAR
WHITBY -- A backyard benefit concert organized by a
10-ycar-old Whitby girl has raised over $260 for the Grand-
view Children's Centre Centre in Oshawa where her
younger sister receives therapy.
Anne O'Connor and her friends recently held a variety
show in the backyard of her family's Fallingbrook Street
home to raise money for the rehabilitation facility.
The show, which has become an annual fund-raiser, fea-
tured a mixture of dancing. comedy and music performed
by Anne and a group of friends from St. Bernard Catholic
School.
The event has been dubbed the Kids for Kids Backyard
Benefit Concert and was started four years ago when
Anne's sister Susan was receiving treatment for a develop-
mental disorder at the Hospital for Sick Children.
Anne's mother, Heather O'Connor, says funds raised
from the first two shows were donated to the Hospital for
Sick Children but since Susan, 8, began receiving physio-
therapy at Grandview last year, proceeds have been donat-
ed to the children's centre.
"The money has grown over the years," she says. "So
has the number of kids involved."
Anne says last year's total of just over $100 was more
than doubled this year, adding "this is the best year we've
ever had "
She was recently awarded the Ontario Community
Newspaper Association sponsored (OCNA) Ontario Junior
Citizen of the Year award by Lieutenant -Governor Hilary
Weston in recognition of her fund-raising efforts and her
mother says while Anne is proud of what she's done, she's
"pretty low key" about the whole thing.
Mrs. O'Connor says local businesses donated prizes and
refreshments for the evening and says while the size of the
audience varies from year to year, there was a -good
crowd" this year with over 70 arca residents in attendance.
Anne will present a cheque to the Grandview Children's
Centre at the centre's annual meeting on Thursday, June 19.
