PICKERING — A father who
vowed to thank a camp for children
with cancer after his son's death by
raising money to buy needed equip-
ment is thrilled "there arc
so many nice people out
there"
John Lyall says he will
surpass his goal of $7,000
after generous News Adver-
tiser readers learned of his
plans to buy a golf cart and
an inflatable motor boat and
motor for Camp Oochigeas,
located on Lake Rosseau in
Muskoka.
Mr. Lyall has received
numerous donations by
mail, and was "blown
away" when 374 people
showed up at a June 8 fund-raising
carwash organized by the Pickering
Fire Department.
"We smashed the car -washing
record;' Mr. Lyall boasts proudly,
notin,, the closest previous high was
in the neighborhood of 200 vehicles.
Mr. Lyall was impressed
with the dozens of volun-
teers who lent a hand and
by the generous nature of
people at the fund-raiser.
One man tracked him down
and pressed two $100 bills
into his palm as he shook
his hand.
He's also been touched by
numerous phone calls, one
from a woman whose
mother is dying of cancer
and wants memorial dona-
tions sent to Camp
Oochigeas when she passes
away.
A hope he's up there in spirit;' Mr.
Lyall says of his son Derek, who was
diagnosed with leukemia at age five.
Because he was in and out of the hos-
pital until his death at age 11 last
October, Derek spent little time at
school.
He made some of his best friends
at camp, which he attended five con-
secutive summers.

Durham cops shoot down two-year contract offer
Two sides now headed
for arbitration hearings
BY STEPHEN SHAW
DURHAM STAFF
Durham cops have rejected a contract offer
which would have given them a $2,000 raise
but would have forced them to pay part of
their uniform cleaning costs.
The 700 -plus members of the Durham
Regional Police Association voted 82 per cent
against the latest proposal made by the
Durham Regional Police Services Board, said
Brian Curtis, association president.
The two sides are now headed for arbitra-
tion.
Mr. Curtis said the two-year contract offer,
voted down by members at a meeting Thurs-
day, would have seen a first-class constable's
annual salary rise to $53,563, from the present
level of $51,475.

Be prepared to deal
with emergencies in
Ajax and Pickering
A car has crashed into a power pole and a live electrical
wire is draped over its roof. The driver of the car is slumped
against the steering wheel and appears to be bleeding heavily
from a facial injury. Would you know the safe actions to take
in this situation?
A Red Cross first aid course can teach you how to deal with
this and other emergency situations. Red Cross First Aid cours-
es are held monthly at the organization's Ajax -Pickering Com-
munity Office in Pickering and its Region of Durham Branch
in Oshawa. The courses include CPR procedures which can be
performed by one adult to help adults, infants or children, and
also offer optional instruction in two -person CPR.
The eight-hour basic Emergency First
Aid course is available in Oshawa on
Saturday, June 21 from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.
and in Ajax -Pickering Saturday, July 12
from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Standard First Aid,

course (depending on whether the two--
person
wo-person CPR option is included) is avail-
able in Oshawa on Saturday and Sunday,
June 21 and 22 from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. and
in Ajax -Pickering on Saturday and Sun-

The submission notes AECB staff
have raised concerns over recent
years about aging equipment at Pick
ering and a significant maintenance
backlog.
-We have not found any evidence
that this issue is being specifically
dealt with in a comprehensive fash-
ion by Ontario Hydro at this time:'
states DNA. adding the AECB has
apparently abandoned the develop-
ment of policy and regulations to
deal with the issue of nuclear station
aging.
DNA's submission outlines the
group's concerns about the possible
improper installation and com-
bustibility of silicone foam used as
fire stops at Pickering: past lack of
financial support from Ontario
Hydro for nuclear emergency plan-
ning: Hydro's slow response to new
evidence regarding the possibility of
a major earthquake near the Picker-
ing station; and delays in the release
of the 'significant event reports'
Hydro is required to issue.
The submission also points to
recent revelations about toxic copper
and zinc emissions from the Picker-
ing station as evidence Hydro cannot
be counted on to provide prompt and
accurate information about its opera-
tions.
DNA's specific recommendations
to the AECB include:
* A new licence condition that would
require an immediate and systematic
review of age-related risks at the
Pickering station;
* A new licence condition requiring
independent fire inspections and the
upgrading of sub -standard fire pro-
tection materials and procedures;
* A requirement that Hydro file
event reports on the public record
within six weeks of occurrence;
* A public report from Hydro on the
status of follow-up actions regarding
alcohol and drug-related events at
Pickering;
* Licence conditions for nuclear sta-
tions which include complete imple-
mentation and rou.ine testing of off-

When the doctors told Derek he was
dying, the youngster made a list of things
he still wanted to do.
Returning to camp one more time was
at the top of that list, something he was

Mr. Lyall has purchased a stereo sys-

Admittedly, the drive will be a difficult

Don't blow
your top
Yes, it happened on the beach (and downtown) in
Oshawa on Wednesday, June 11, 1997. Not surprising.
since women have been going topless in Toronto since
the beginning of the month and papers there had pub-
lished pictures of topless women. It was only a matter
of time before the warm weather had a few women
doffing their tops. But it seems the rather modest
photo which ran in the News Advertiser on the week-
end had more than a few people steamed.
The courts have spoken on the issue of toplessness
and it has been ruled legal. By running a picture and
story, the News Advertiser is merely confirming what
anyone at the beach that day could see with their own
eyes. The women in the picture are doing nothing ille-
gal. From our point of view, the picture is tasteful: cer-
tainly far less risque than anything seen in a certain
Toronto daily newspaper with its black tape shots or
on CBC television at 6 p.m., which showed full-
frontal bare -breasted women during their news report.
It's not our intention to go out every hot and sunny
day this summer in search of topless women. The
story was newsworthy because the issue is new, there-
fore news. It's news and as a newspaper, it's our job to
report in words and pictures, the news in the area we
cover (no pun intended).
We will report on the issue under a number of con-
ditions not restricted to but including: confrontations
on the beach or elsewhere between topless women and
others; bylaws passed by municipal councils regard-
ing areas in where toplessness is allowed; legitimate
`newsworthy' complaints by the general public over
toplessness.
We're not interested in exploiting this issue to sell
papers or for any other reason. We're simply keen to
report the latest breaking news for our readers
throughout Durham Region. We neither support nor
oppose toplessness itself; we leave that for democrat-
ically elected representatives and the judiciary to
decide. We have said in a previous editorial that we
believe there are far more important things for all of
us to worry about. Here's one immediate example:
how about the death of a young person and the arrest
of another in the case on charges of first-degree mur-
der? That was on the same page with the picture of the
topless women.

`You know' has to go
To the editor:
I really enjoyed reporter
Marianne Takacs' April 15 and
May 14 columns on the way people
mangle the English language. They
were very good.
But she's barely scratched the
surface.
Here are my pet hates:
1 spend much time watching TV
and listening to radio. It's impossi-
ble to escape hearing the phrase
..you know" over and over again.
The rection it's used so often is that
most people being interviewed
mouth off before they have a
chance to think and get their brains
in gear.
We need a higher standard.
People should listen to themselves
and think before they speak.
The phrase "you know"
deserves obscurity, along with
-decimate", which is often used
erroneously, and "at this point in
time".
Good speech does not come nat-
urally. h takes practice you know!
Kenneth E. Weber,
Pickering
(Editor's note: Sorry we turned
your brilliant poem into a straight
letter, Ken. If we hadn't, we'd get
enough rhymes to fill our den. You
know.)
Picture of girl mauled by dog
useful lesson for young boy
To the editor:
I disagree with Jeffrey P.
Greenman's letter to the editor in
the lune 13 News Advertiser head-
lined `Mauled girl's photo worsens
children's fear of dogs'.
Unlike Mr. Greenman's children,
my three-year-old son is not afraid
of dogs. He races to pat every dog
that passes by our house. I used this
photo of the mauled Pickering girl
to illustrate why he should always
approach any animal with caution.
The photo in the News
Advertiser was not "utterly unnec-
essary" and "sensationalist". It was
news.

Power of the press
lies with readers
As a reporter, 1 get to talk to people from all
walks of life. And while some of my dealings
have made me a little pessimistic about people,
it never lasts long.
That's because of people like you.
Recently, a paragraph about a car wash to
raise money for a camp for kids with cancer
landed on my desk. The organizer asked if we
could put a small blurb in the paper about it.
With one phone call, I learned that the orga-
nizer — a Pickering man named John Lyall —
was a bereaved father whose son attended
Camp Ooxhigeas in northern Ontario for five
summers before Zoning his battle to leukemia
last fall.
Mr. Lyall was holding the fund-raiser to
thank the camp for the joy it brought Derck.
who at the tender age of I 1 wrote a will asking
that some of his things be donated to the
Hospital for Sick Children, where toe: spent too
many months of his life. Knowing he had a
short time to live, he tried his best to comfort
his dad.
(Sounds like father and son had a lot in
common.)
It doesn't take an award-winning reporter to
know Mr. Lyall's efforts deserved more than a
paragraph. And it doesn't take an investigative
reporter to know that people like you want —
maybe even need — to read inspirational sto-
ries like this. f
And so 374 oyou showed up to Mr. Lyall's
car wash, raising more than $2,000 toward the
purchase of a golf cart and other stents needed
by the camp. One man even pressed $200 into
his hand.
Mr. Lyall has received numerous phone
calls pledging more financial support, includ-
ing one from the parents of a child suffering
the same disease Derek battled. I'm sure it
would be no surprise to you to learn Mr. Lyall
plans to meet with them to lend emotional sup-
port.
I'm sure you can imagine how humbled 1
was when Mr. Lyall called to thank me for all
1 had done for him. If that's what power of the
press means, I'd gladly take credit.
But the power really lies with people who
take the time to read a story about people like
Mr. Lyall ... and then do something about it.
For people like John and Derek Lyall, and
for people like you, I give thanks.

Training program helps unemployed become self-employed
BY ROB Bt'RBIDGE
SPECIAL TY) THL 11:WS ADVFIMSFR
In four weeks, Michel
Saikali of Ajax went from
being an unemployed
mechanic to a small busi-
ness owner. But it took four
weeks of intensive business
training under the tutelage
of experienced entrepre-
neurs.
Mr. Saikali started
Thrifty Mechanic Shop in
Ajax in 1993 after gradual-
ing from Newport Training
Group's self-employment.
training course — a partner-
ship between business and
government that has helped
about 5(X) people in Durham
Region go from unemployed
to self-employed status in
the last four years.
While the course is part
of the federal government's
Self Employment Assistance
Program, the co-ordinating
and training is contracted
out to Newport Training
Group. Newport provides
private sector know-how by
hiring successful small busi-
ness owners as trainers. The
federal government provides
income support to the bud-
ding entrepreneurs for a year
after graduation, while they
start their businesses.
That income support was
crucial to Mr. Saikali.
..It was backbone sup-
port" that gave him one less
thing to worry about while
he got his business off the
ground.
Mr. Saikali, now 47,
knew how to run a business,
having owned a similar shop
in Lebanon, but, he says, the
course strengthened his
skills in the areas of man-
agement, advertising and
customer relations.
Steve Maloney, co-owner
of Ncwport Training Group,
says the students "learn
everything critical for a suc-
cessful launch of their husi-
nesses", such as building a
business plan, getting
financing, selling, under-
standing competition, adver-
tising and networking.
Networking was one of
the most important skills
Pickering entrepreneur Bar-
bara Crowhurst got from the
course.
"I really believe in net-
working;' says the owner of
The Visual Marketing
Group, who describes net-
working as the development
of business relationships
that benefit everyone.
Her own network
includes about 12 contrac-
tors and freelancers who
work for her two-year-old
company that specializes in
interior design for retail
stores and trade shows.
Business

Tips on investing in mutual
funds and avoiding capital gains
taxes will be offered during a free
seminar next week.
Azza Abdallah of the financial
firm of Edward Jones is holding
the seminar at 7 p.m. on Thurs-
day, June 26.
There will also be pointers on
how to manage a severance pack-
age.
Seating is limited so interested
people should reserve a spot for
the event in the Edward Jones
office in the Rougemount Square
plaza at Rougemount Drive and
Hwy. 2 in Pickering.

mation.

Pickering entrepreneur Barbara Crowhurst learned the
fine an of networking through the Newport Training
Group's program. Here company, the Visual Marketing
Group, specializes in interior design for retail stores
and trade shows. Newport Training Group says it has
helped 5(X) Durham residents start new business ven-
tures in the last four years.
Before being laid off Mr. Maloney says 70 per
about three years ago, Ms. cent of the companies that
Crowhurst did similar work open after receiving training
for a firm in Scarborough for at Newport are still in busi-
16 years.
Now that
she's her own

ness after three years, while
the national average is about
30 per cent.
He says much of this suc-
cess comes from "our policy
of really challenging them.
We challenge them to come
up with a formalized busi-
ness plan "
It's even a challenge to
get into the program.
Besides being unemployed,
applicants must go through
an interview at which they
have to prove their idea is
workable.
Mr. Maloney says appli-
cants must have financial
viability, some expertise in
their chosen type of busi-
ness, the desire to see their
plan through and a mar-
ketable product or service.
But if they graduate,
they'll benefit from valuable
peer support.
For a year after gradua-
tion, they get one-on-one
advice from experienced
small business owners and
get together with fellow
graduates to exchange ideas.
Ms. Crowhurst says the
monthly meeting with her
mentor gave her "incredible
focus" partly because she
had to present a business
plan each time.
She says she could have
started her business without
the course "but it gave me a
higher level to start. I
entered the market running
with their assistance. With-
out that, I would havc
entered at a crawl. It takes a
long time to figure it out on
your own"
And Ms. Crowhurst',
grateful the course helped
her become her own boss.
"Before you were just
part of a corporation. It's a
life -altering thing. You're
never the same. You control
your life:"

course can be obtained by

PI( KERING - The Picker' ng
Sox minor peewee rep baseball t
faced some of the top squads in
province and responded by winning
'B' championship at a recent tourna-
ment in Brampton.
Pickering won four out of five
games to qualify for the 'B' pool
championship game.
Pickering faced a
speedy Kitchener
team in the well-
. rBA 1 played final and
posted an 1 1-7
i %-.in. The game
was close until ilio third inning
when David 'H Bomh' Hinan
pounded out one of two doubles in
the inning. Pickering bats came to
life that inning as the entire batting
order made it to the plate. In the sev-
enth inning. Kitchener attempted a
comeback. With the bases loaded
and two out, a Kitchener batter
smashed a line drive to left field.
Mike 'The Jet' Murdoch, playing
with a pulled leg muscle, made a
diving catch to end the game.
The Red Sox started the tournev
with a 14-3 victory over Oakville.
After trailing 2-1 after two innings,
Pickering put its offence in gear,
with a seven -run inning to put the
game on ice. Strong pitching by
Paul 'The Babe' Harrison and
Callan Exeter in the fourth inning
snuffed out a potential Oakville
uprising.
In the second game, the Red Sox
edged a tough Niagara Falls club 3-
2. Pickering pitcher Carl
Jadunandan was the king of the hill
in this contest, hurling four strong
innings and allowing no runs. In the
fifth, clutch hitting by Skylcr Burns,
Matt Yarmoluk and Hinan put
Pickering on the scoreboard en route
to the victory.
The Red Sox faced the Brampton
Royals, the top-rated Ontario Baseball
Association squad, in the third game.
Brampton led 5-2 in the fifth inning
but Pickering eventually tied the con-
test in the sixth. In Pickering's last at
bats in the seventh inning, Jadunandan
dropped a perfect squeeze bunt to
bring Alex 'The Rocket' Della Mora
across the plate with the winning run
in a 6-5 decision.
In the fourth game, the Sox met the
powerhouse Brampton Red Sox, two-
time OBA champs. Injuries to
Murdoch, Lucais Ho, Harrison and
Yarmoluk put Pickering at a distinct
disadvantage in this contest and the
Pickering peewees baseball tourney `B' champs
