Durham students attend
school Just For Laughs
A group of students from Ajax, Whitby and
Oshawa spent the last nine weeks clowning around
— and they've got the red noses to prove it.
Nine students, who attend classes at Grove School
on Simcoe Street South in Oshawa, have just gradu-
ated from a special Clown School and are ready to
entertain the world with their antics, complete with
clown noses, makeup and outfits.
The troupe, known as Just For Laughs, has already
performed at three elementary schools and recently
appeared at Ballycliffe Lodge in Ajax at the regular
monthly birthday party for residents. Later this
month, they'll entertain at the Children's Aid Soci-
ety's annual picnic at Camp Samac in Oshawa.
"We had the graduation ceremony at the (Durham
Board of) Education Centre," says vice-principal
Nancy Browne. the woman who brought in the
clowns.
, Ilney were pretty proud. They got their clown
noses and certificates."
Ms. Browne got the idea for the school in the fall
after reading a newspaper article about the program
run by Telephone Pioneers, the charitable organiza-
tion set up by employees of Northern Telecom. The
program was designed to help problem students learn
to become clowns and turn misbehavior into good
behavior.
That's what Ms. Browne was looking for, some-
thing that would help students develop positive atti-
tudes and greater self-esteem.
She applied to the board for funding, received it
and arranged for professional clowns and program
creators Dawna Sanderson and Barb Bennett to teach

BY STEPHEN SHAW
DURHAM S"tAFF
Janet Jessop admitted yesterday
she twice gave false testimony to
help convict Guy Paul Morin for the
murder of her nine-year-old daugh-
ter.
Pressured by Durham Regional
Police homicide detectives and con-
vinced at the time of Mr. Morin's
guilt - he was cleared by DNA evi-
dence two years ago - Ms. Jessop
said she twice changed the time she
estimated returning home the day her
daughter disappeared.
The time difference provided the
"window of opportunity" prosecutors
alleged Mr. Morin needed to abduct
Christine Jessop from her
Queensville home Oct. 3. 1984.
Without those few precious min-
utes, Mr. Morin would have avoided
10 years of prosecution, a public
inquiry probing his wrongful convic-
tion was told.
The crucial minutes around the
time Christine went missing was the
focus of key evidence given at the
inquiry yesterday morning by Ms.
Jessop.
Ms. Jessop and her son Kenneth
both initially told York Regional
Police they returned home at 4:10
p.m., following Kenneth's dentist
appointment, and discovered Chris-
tine. who usually got off the school
near ear her home at 3:45 p.m.. was
missing.
The issue of arrival time was cru-
cial at Mr. Morin's second trial -
which resulted in his conviction - as
the prosecution took the position the
Jessops returned home sometime
after 4:30 p.m.
If the Jessop's initial time was
correct, it would have scuttled the
Crown's case against Mr. Morin,
who left his Toronto place of
employment at 3:32 p.m. and could
not have possibly made the 42 -
minute drive home, next door to the
Jessops, prior to 4:10 p.m., the
inquiry was told.
However. contradictory time esti-
mates given by Kenneth Jessop's
dentist, who told police Kenneth was
late for his 3:30 p.m. appinntmcnl, in
addition to sugS"ions by Durham
detectives the Jessop kitchen clock
was %low, prompted Ms Jcssop to rc-
cvatuatc her return time. the inquiry
was told.
The kitchen clock, which Ms. Jcs-
sop relied on to base her estimate,
was proven accurate by long distance
phone records which showed she
made a call to her lawyer at 4:49
p.m.. said commission counsel Mark
Sandler.
(Ms, Jessop had said the clock
showed about 4:50 p.m. when she
trade the call.)
Ms. Jessop also testified at the
trial she had thrown away her kitchen
clock two weeks after Christine's
disappearance because it was "losing
lime"
In a stunning revelation, she
admitted yesterday that testimony
about throwing away the clock was
totally untrue.
Ms. Jessop told the inquiry she
had in fact removed the clock during
kitchen renovations scveral months
after Christine vanished.
"A mistake was made obviously."

Hospital needs
fight medicine
The Province's Hospital Restructuring Commission
currently studying the fate of Durham's health care
facilities need study the patient no more before writ-
ing a prescription for Ajax -Pickering General
Hospital.
Commission members are armed with the Durham
Region District Health Council acute care study as
they ponder the shape of health care here. And, their
ears are still ringing with the words of area hospital
officials who presented the case for their respective
institutions when the commission came to Durham a
few weeks ago.
But, all the commission members really have to do
to come up with the right prescription for APGH is to
look at its symptoms — symptoms that the hospital's
been experiencing all year and symptoms that flared
up last week.
The hospital has been feeling stressed all year. To
date in 1997, it's been much busier than in the same
period in 1996. Visits to the emergency department,
the ambulatory care clinics and the fracture clinic are
all up drastically. And, admissions have risen substan-
tially.
If we put just one week under the microscope —
last week — it becomes clear that APGH is stretched
to the limit. The increased traffic in the hospital's
emergency department created a shortage of beds
which forced the cancellation of elective surgery for
seven people.
The situation's only going to get worse before it
gets better. After all, Ajax and Pickering continue to
grow. Our aging population is increasing. And, APGH
will feel additional burden when Whitby General
Hospital is turned into a regional rehabilitation centre
as has been recommended.
Diagnosis:.Ajax-Pickenng General Hospital can't
take any more It's stressed to the limit.
Prescription: It must be expanded to become the
full-service hospital for west Durham, as recommend-
ed by the health council and APGH officials.
Prognosis: The people of Ajax and Pickering will
be served well if the Hospital Restructuring
Commission pays hoed to APGH officials and the
health council's acute care study. Otherwise, the con-
dition of the hospital NO the health of the people it
serves could take a turn for the worse.

In response to the June 1 editorial
headlined 'Get tough on drunk

said:
"The roads in Ontario are in the worst shape they've
been in in 40 years. Federal and provincial govem-
ments collect at least $12 billion from drivers every
year. If they spent most of that money on roads, we
wouldn't have the problem. With those enormous
potholes, we'd have to build trucks like tanks to
make them hold up. We should place the blame
where it belongs -- with politicians.'

To the editor:
As a public school board
supporter. I find myself agree-
ing with Mary Cooper's letter
to the editor in the June 3
News Advertiser that it would
make sense to send overflow
students from Archbishop
Denis O'Connor Catholic
High School to Ajax High
School to take advantage of
spare space. DO'C could
return the favor when circum-
stances change.
But why stop there? It is
also logical to pool school
buses which often travel in
both jurisdictions partially
empty. How about sharing
administration space too, thus
sparing taxpayers of both sys-
tems the cost of separate head
offices? And let's stop deny-
ing access to separate school
teaching positions for non-
Catholic teachers when
Catholic teachers face no dis-
crimination in the public
board system. That would be
logical.
In fact, why not go all out
and integrate the two systems
for the general good of our
multicultural society. It would
make the school system less
expensive, less discriminato-
ry, and more democratic. We
would call it the simple logic
revolution.

We're doing

In the past decade., teachers and
school administrators have seen a
dramatic and significant change in
the behavior of the students in their
care. Violence is an increasing
problem in our society that is also a
growing trend in the school yard
and classroom. Not only has the fre-
quency of assaults increased but
also more violent types of assaults
are occurring. often involving the
use of weapons. The perpetrators
are often groups of individuals
(gangs) and a greater number of
females and elementary -aged stu-
dents are getting involved.
What can a school board do to
ensure that schools provide a safe
and secure environment for students
to learn? Read the following case
studies and ask yourself what
actions should he taken in dealing
with each case.
CASE N1: A student has been
involved in numerous fights in the
school yard. This student has stolen
money from classmates and has
often stolen lunches. The student is
belligerent and refries to follow the
direction given by teachers. Thc
student continually bullies peers
and is verbally abusive.
CASE #2: A student has been
involved with the Children's Aid
Society few eight years. The child
has wf%rod physical abuse from an
alcoholic mother and her numerous
boyfriends. The individual has been
placed in a variety of foster care
facilities arid returned to the home
several times only to be removed
again. The child is having difficulty
farming attachments and is often
withdrawn and exhibits very poor
social skills.
How should we handl each
case" Docs each case require differ-
ent anion:' No' The child in both
cases is one and the same. As a '-vil-
lagc raising our children” we are
doing a very prior doh.
Helpless children are exposed
daily to violence and abusc. Their
basic needs are neglected not w
mention their social or emotional
welfare being ignored. Children are
all too often returned over and over
again to their neglectful and abusive
parents. In the wake of government
cutbacks many of these students are
placed in over -crowded classrooms
and the support systems previously
available, such as special education,
social workers• counsellors and
health workers, has been reduced
and even in some places eliminated.
Is it any wonder or surprise that
these young children becorne angry
and exhibit deviant and aggressive
behavior? We can cry for the chil-
dren or we can stand up and fight
for the rights of a child. It is a sad
commentary on our society when a
newspaper receives more letters
regarding an increase in cable fees
than they do about the govern-
ment's systematic attack on what
we value as a society — education,
health care and the social welfare of
all.

PICKERINC — This has been a
fine season for connedies on the local

The'
recent is Rumors. another
of Neil Simon's amazing string of hits.
The play is currently playing at Heron -
gate Bam'litcatre in Pickering.
Rumors is set in a fashionable house
in Sneden's landing. another of these
obscure or fictitious communities in
New York State where so many conn -
dies are set. The occasion is a dinner
party, with eight guests. There is some-
thing wrong. However, and the host and
hostess do not appear to welcome the
guests. This leads to all sorts of rumors
as to what has happened and the com-
plications flonv freely, which makes for
a gad farce.
This production is very last -paced
and funny. Tle cast of 10 all gave strong
performances, tot there were two who
particularly stood out in my opinion.
Terry leach and Jo Hubbard have mys-
terious talents fir being funny while
doing something as straightforward as
walking across the stage.
This is a lire shone with a good script
by a living legend in American theatre.
The so is attractive and the cast -first-
rate. I highly recommend this stow.
