Councillors recently adopted the study and accompanying development guidelines and implementation strategy. "We've now got a Council -adopted vision for what we consider to be an emerging downtown," says Pickering director of planning Neil Carroll. "It's going to give landowners and prospec- tive developers a good, clear understand- ing of what the Town is looking for." While admitting development of Eergency.1 Busy stretch at 'axAJ-Pickerin ' hos ital cancels some surg eves A rash of emergencies led to the cancellation last week of some elec- tive surgery at Ajax -Pickering Gen- eral Hospital. Hospital spokesman Kim Mac- Murray said "an incredibly busy week" in the emergency department forced the cancellations. "It's even beyond what we would have expected for this time of year," she explained. "May and June are always busy and then it sort of levels off for the summer." The extra emergency traffic led to a shortage of beds which pushed seven patients off the elective surgery list. Four of the operations were already rescheduled as of the end of the week and openings were being sought for the other three. Ms. MacMurray explained the problem was only a lack of beds and not any shortage of staff or space in the hospital's operating rooms. She noted APGH has generally been busier this year. Visits to the emergency depart- ment are up by 400, to 6,533, for the year to date. Visits to the fracture clinic arc up by 371, trips to the hospital's ambu- latory care clinics have increased by 578, and admissions rose by 60. LIS 2H5 PHONE: 683-5110 FAX: 683-7363 Publisher: Tim Whittaker ♦ Editorial To strike or not to strike? It hasn't happened yet, but 84 per cent of sec- ondary school teachers across the province have voted to go on strike should they feel their rights are being infringed upon by the Province. It's not too surprising since anyone could see the teachers would wind up butting heads with the Harris government. Educators have been concerned with the direction the education ministry was heading in and have made their worries about cuts known loud and clear over the past two years. Teachers certainly have a right to defend their turf but that right stops short of putting the school year and the future of high school students in jeopardy. It's not fair on the one hand to claim you are the pro- tector of our children, their link to a better future (through education), and the last hope against a gov- ernment you feel is trying to undercut your work and then turn around and walk out on those students you serve. Secondary school teachers, who are paid between $31,000 (for a first-year teacher) and $64,000 (for 12 years experience or more) per year by the Durham Board of Education, have a vital role to play in soci- ety. The future of our children is probably shaped more during four or five years of high school than at any other time in their lives. Teachers must be well - compensated for their work because, we as parents rely on and trust them with our most precious assets. Teachers must set a sterling example, showing lead- ership and helping develop young minds for the chal- lenges of the 21 st century. Threats about what will happen to children as a result of cutbacks serve no purpose in the here and now. What's important is teachers strive to improve and to give our children the education they deserve. It's worth noting: Canada's results on internation- al math and language tests at the Grade 9 and Grade 11 level were mediocre when compared with the rest of the world. Teachers have a duty to help improve those results over the next decade or two so our young people can earn entrance to top university pro- grams and can progress to good, high -paying jobs. Teachers are valuable; in fact they're essential to all Ontarians. The government must treat them with respect. In turn, teachers should concentrate on delivering only the very best to our children and leave the picket lines to someone else. "We need the integration of mental health into the greater health field;" said Marilyn Nearing of the Commu- nity Advisory Board (CAB) at the Whitby Mental Health Centre during a recent panel discussion on mental health reform. Members of Community Advisory Boards from provincial psychiatric hospitals gathered in Whitby for their annual conference hosted this year by the Whitbv Mental Health Centre. The theme of the conference – Let's Get On With It – was the focus of a panel discussion on reforming the system Friday at Oshawa's Holiday Inn. "This is about people getting ser- vices they need in the right place at the right time;" said Steve Lurie, executive director of the Toronto chapter of the Canadian Mental Health Ascociation in mental health systems," he said, adding "talk to the people who understand what is needed „ Ms. Nearing said it's necessary to integrate the delivery of mental heath services with those of community hospitals to better serve people who need care. While she says the issue of mental health reform predates the present provincial govern- ment, she says "right now it plays into the government's agenda because they're into cost-cutting" David Giuffrida, a lawyer with the Provin- cial Psychiatric Advocacy Office told CAB members to "forensically audit what the gov- crnment is doing in this area;' adding it takes "vigilance" to maintain the mental health sys- tem. Ken Shulman; chief of psychiatry at Sun- nybrook Health Science Centre, said the province needs a system "that provides inter- dependence and accountability" "Mental health is truly important and is part of• everybody's responsibility," he said. adding patients' needs must remain ' central in the reform process. Fred Upshaw, regional vice-presi- dent of the Ontario Public Service 1 Employees Union, urged CAB mem- bers to work with "front-line workers" to integrate the systems. The report, prepared for the Royal Bank by DesRosiers Automotive Con- sultants (Canada's leading auto indus- try analysts). confirms a recent upward swing in new -vehicle sales (new vehi- cle sales in April were up 30 per cent over the same period last year. the best April in six years), but is an about-face from the buying trend of the past cou- ple of years. Based on interviews of 2,5(x) vehi- cle owners conducted in January and February of this year. DesRosiers reported that 49 per cent of' respon- dents said they would purchase a new vehicle (40 per cent would buy a new vehicle, nine per cent would acquire a leased vehicle), compared with 41 per cent who plan to purchase a used vehi- cle. In fast year's survey. 51 percent of respondents indicated their next %chi- cle would he a used one compared with 44 per cent who expected to buy a new or leased vehicle.
