She turned 106 June Tun-loving'Pickeri PICKERING — Emily Barker, who is likely Pickering's most senior citizen, celebrated her 106th birthday last weekend at the Orchard Villa Retirement Home. She was surrounded on her birthday June 1 by family and friends for a lively celebration, includ- ing her only child, Margaret Westlake, who's 75 herself. "She keeps saying `I don't know why I'm still living';' says Mrs. Westlake. "We just tell her 'The Lord's not ready for you'" Mrs. Barker was born in 1891 in Palmerstown, Ireland and was one of 13 children in her family, 10 who survived childhood. She came to Canada at the age of 22 to live with her sister in Toronto. photo by Walter Passarella 1 and celebrated with friends and family at the facility. She married a few years later but her husband died when Margaret was only one year old and she went to work as a cook in private households to support herself and her daughter. Mrs. Barker moved to Pickering in the late 1940s and eventually remarried and lived at her own home until she was 96. Over the last year or two, says Mrs. Westlake, her mother has been losing her hearing and becoming somewhat forgetful, but she's still quite healthy and is able to get around with a walker. "She likes to see people and enjoys her fami- ly. Describing Dr. Im's medical skills as "weak" and his attempt to perform a medical assessment as "clumsy" and "misguided", Mr. Justice Ferguson nonetheless noted the doctor's actions didn't consti- tute sexual assault."Although he may have inappro- priately touched various parts of (the victim's) body, he did not touch her in a manner suggestive of a pur- pose of gaining sexual gratification," noted Mr. Jus- tice Ferguson in his judgment. "On a further note, he said nothing to her of a sexual nature and didn't per- sist after she stopped the examination." Mr. Justice Ferguson also noted in his judgment that Dr. Im is "an intelligent man" who had "previ- ously experienced allegations of sexual assault in a medical context. I find it hard to believe he would even attempt to commit a sexual assault under these circumstances," said the judge. Mr. Justice Ferguson further noted the door to the examination room was open and an employee had been in and out of the room several times while the alleged assault occurred. Dr. Im also knew the victim was a nurse and would be aware of what would con- stitute sexual touching or touching for a legitimate medical purpose. Outside the courtroom, Dr. Im was relieved to be exonerated. "Yeah, it's a sense of relief, it's a sense of new life, it's a sense of understanding in light of what has happened. It's a time of reflection for me;' said Dr. Im, who was supported by two family mem- bers when the final verdict was read. Family grateful for community's aid FAMILY/From page 1 donated $1,500 and an Ajax man has given $1,000 to help pay non-medical expenses for the Brown family when 10 -year-old Andrew goes to Houston, Texas for treatment of myasthenia gravis. OHIP covers medical costs but not expenses such as air fare, hotel rooms and meals, Andrew's mother says. His next trip is Monday and the family needs help to pay for the expenses for the five-day visit. Two earlier trips this year had to be cancelled due to lack of funds. After trying to find financial help from local organizations, she turned to the commu- nity for help. Earlier this week, the News Advertiser carried her plea in a story and an editorial. Response was immediate. The Progress Club has $1,500 that we want to put toward this;' says club member Bill Somberger. " Mis is what we in the service club call people who fall between the cracks and this is the type of people we like to help" Mrs. Brown says many organizations couldn't help because they are set up to help groups, not indi- viduals. A well-known Ajax man, who wished to remain anonymous, gave $1,000. "I've had four children. They're all healthy," he says. So when he hears of people with children who have health problems, he likes to help as best he can. Donations can be made by writing to Andrew Brown Trust Fund, P.O. Box 45, Ajax, Ont., L I S 3C2. LIS 2H5 • Publisher: Tim Whittaker ♦ Editorial Get into the spiritl, If there was only one weekend each year when Ajax and Pickering residents could most clearly express their love of community and * embody its sense of identity, this weekend is the one. In Pickering, residents are invited to get out and join the fun at the annual Frenchman's Bay Festival featuring a host of activities for every- one in the community. The festival provides res- idents an opportunity to express themselves in a uniquely Pickering context. A street dance, pet- ting zoo, demonstrations of skill and midway rides — all taking place in a natural setting at the foot of Liverpool Road on the shore of Lake Ontario — give the entire community an excuse to get out of their homes and meet together in a common celebration. Residents can meet between June 6 and 15 to celebrate their com- munity. A wide range of events and attractions has been scheduled to appeal to everyone in the community, and it is always an event that is well-run and well -attended. Each of these community-based initiatives bring with them a tradition residents have been celebrating in communities across the land in one form or another for generations. It's a cele- bration of community, the arrival of summer, the borders we share, and the friends we hold dear. And, neither of them — Home Week nor the Frenchman's Bay Festival — would be possible without the efforts of volunteers in each neigh- borhood who believe in their communities and a commitment to the common good. We tip our hats to those people in each com- munity. Their efforts often go unnoticed, even though we all benefit. No matter where you live in our little corner of the world, we encourage you to get into the spirit starting this weekend. You'll feel a part of the community, you'll make new friends and you'll be glad you did. MIN v Letters to the editor Students at under -used Ajax High losing out To the editor: Re the News Advertiser story headlined 'Ajax High School's numbers too low': Public school board superin- tendent Trudy Nisbett says Ajax High School will start bulging again in just a few more years, and that there is so little gain in the short term that it's not worth changing the boundaries to try to correct the low enrolment. Obviously, board planners did not foresee the present problems at this high school, which include fewer course options and insuffi- cient extra -curricular activities. How can we be confident that this time their projections will be correct? In any case, even if they are, it is cold comfort to the stu- dents attending Ajax High School today. While "short term" to Ms. Nisbett may be four or five years, to these students that same "short term" will represent their total high school experience. This is unacceptable. Timely, flexible and creative problem solving is what we need in order to improve this situation now. Merely standing by a bun- gled decision and letting time iron out the resulting problems is just not good enough. Sarah Newberry, Ajax The News Advertiser accepts let- ters to the editor. Local 331 Ontario Public Service Employees Union president and RN Joan Gates recently learned the Ministry of Health turned down her re -appointment to the Durham and District Health Council. A voice for the front-line health workers, Ms. Gates had served three years on the board. Now she's out. No explanation, although none is needed. Health Minister Jim Wilson's actions speak louder than words. When seven names are put forward for re -appointment and only one, that one being a union member, is turned down it's pretty obvious why the decision was made. Adding to the senseless decision is the board is also under staffed, with only nine members work- ing on a board which allows for 18. This is not a question of union support or bashing, it's one of representation. How can Minister Wilson expect to gain the confidence of hospital and health care workers as the restructur- ing process continues'' Removing their prime voice on a very important board can only add to the wide communication and trust gap between the Province and health care workers. Health council president Gerry Blake said Ms. Gates was a valuable member of the council and although she was primarily a spokesman for union members, she always took to heart the issue of global Durham health care. The Minister's office refused to comment on why Ms. Gates was not re -appointed. Of course it couldn't, because the truth wouldn't go over too well. Ms. Gates was not personally informed of the Health Minister's decision, instead receiving the bad news from the health council. Minister Wilson's only communication came in the form of a letter thanking Ms. Gates for her work on the board. A pat on the head, now move along like a good little girl. It's not good enough for Ms. Gates and it's not good enough for the people of Durham. Today, Minister Wilson will be at the same Whitby Mental Health Centre where Ms. Gates works. He's the guest for the annual riveting of Psyches hospitals. I hope workers there take him to task and demand an explanation for his actions. In a surprise four-hour truck inspection blitz on Bloor Street in Oshawa Tuesday, Durham Regional Police only nabbed 2S per cent of the vehicles for defects. "Those are encouraging num- bers,- says Seri, eri cant Rick Bates of the Traffic Management Unit. "They're a lot lower than we nor- mally get. At tells me the majority of pro- fessional truck drivers support the ongoing police effort." Sgt. Bates says of the 29 trucks stopped during the inspection only eight had some type of mechanical problem including brakes out of adjustment, loose steering boxes and a rotted brake line on one truck which was pulled off the road as a result. Ten charges were laid against both drivers and owners for failing to maintain the vehicles. But compared to last January's two-day safety inspection in P ering where 71 of 124 trucks had problems, this campaign was pretty good, he says. As for this latest truck mspec- tion, Sgt. Bates says two drivers were given T-shirts in recognition for passing "the safety check with flying colors and they were both from Mackie Transport in Oshawa." But when all is said and done, we often think our lawns just don't have the "finished" look we desire. Rather than getting upset, take the edge off with a lawn edger. An edger will give your lawns a neat, straight border along walkways and driveways and around flower beds. To fit your needs, choose from two types of edgers — walk -behind and hand-held. Gas -powered hand-held edgers offer a lightweight option with added maneuverability for homeowners who don't have lots of edged areas to main- tain. There are also some products on the market that are multipurpose, easi- ly converted from trimmers to edgers and back again. Once you've found the right prod- uct, take time to review the operator's manual before turning it on. A few things to remember arc: - place your unit so that the edge rests against the edge of the paved sur- face (i.e.. sidewalk) before starting your edger, • move your edger at a slow pace, keeping the guide pressed lightly against the pavement edge; • edge only when the grass and soil are dry — this will prevent clogging, and • before removing any clogged material, turn the unit off and use a stick or tool to clear the clogged area. For safety's sake, check out the area to be edged first, removing any objects such as rocks, branches and other yard debris. Then check to be; sure the edger blade is firmly attached. When edging, wear eye protection and proper attire — long pants, sturdy shoes with traction soles and a long-sleeved shirt with shirttails tucked in. And remember: children should never operate lawn edgers or other yard care equipment.
