home. Police have been to the Glamor-
gan Avenue home of Kelly James
Osborne, who's wanted on two charges
each of attempted murder and threaten-
ing death, in addition to several weapons
offences. But, he hasn't been located.
"Our biggest concern is he might still
be in possession of the handgun;' says
Sgt. Grimley. "Obviously, that's of great
concern"
Two 23 -year-old Pickering men trav-
elled to a Major Oaks Drive home
Wednesday evening when they became
involved with another man in a dispute
over owed money, police said.
"At that time a fourth male armed
with a semi-automatic handgun inter-
vened:' Sgt. Grimley reported at the
time. "As both men were leaving, the
armed mart approached their car and
fired.
' Iire bullets passed though the car's
windows, in one side and out the other,"
narrowly missing the two men. Neither
was injured.
Police may be hindered in their inves-
tigation by the fact that the most recent
photo of the suspect they can get a hold
of is now outdated.
Since the picture was taken two years
ago, Mr. Osborne has shaved his head.
He was last seen with a couple days'
growth of whiskers. The suspect is
-described as white, 63", 177 pounds,
with hazel eyes.

Bereaved dad raises funds to
thank camp for kids with cancer
BY LINDA WHITE
STAFF REPORTER
PICKERING — The
father of a boy who lost his
battle to cancer last fall
wants to thank a camp for
children with cancer which
brought his son much happi-
ness in his last years.
John Lyall has collected
about $2,200 for the pur-
chase of a golf cart and an
inflatable motor boat and
motor for Camp Oochegeas,
located on Lake Rosseau in
Muskoka. He hopes to raise
more of the $7,000 price tag
with a car wash this week-
end.
"Since my son loved this
camp so much, I want to do
something for them every
year;" Mr. Lyall explains.
His son Derek was diag-
nosed with leukemia at age
five. Because he was in and
out of hospital until his
death at age I 1 last October,
Derek spent little time at
school. He made some of
his best friends at camp,
which he attended five sum-
mers.
"When the doctors told
him he was dying, Derek
made a wish list of the
things he still wanted to do.
Going back to Camp
(Oochegeas) was tops on his
list, followed by a trip to
Walt Disney World —
which we did — and a dog,
which he got two weeks
before he died," Mr. Lyall
recalls.
On his last trip to camp,
Derek handed his father his
will, saying he was tired of
fighting for his life and was
"happy to be with God". He
asked that his pool table be
donated to The Hospital for
Sick Children in Toronto —
where he received treatment
— and specified where he
wanted his games and bicy-
cle to go.
"He was a brave young
man:' Mr. Lyall says of his
son, who underwent a bone
marrow transplant and was
in isolation nine months
shortly before he went to
camp for the last time.
Mr. Lyall, a real estate
agent, believes the camp
meant so much to his son
because "everybody up
there had cancer. The kids
are in the hospital a lot and
this is their escape"
Each summer, 160 chil-

Voters pick McTeague Longfield wins big
®here may have
been plenty of
nail-biting at Dan
McTeague's
headquarters
election night, but it wasn't
over the fate of his bid to repre-
sent the riding of Pickering -
Ajax -Uxbridge in the House of
Commons.
Mr. McTeague won the rid-
ing for the Liberals with more
than 50 per cent of the vote,
leaving the Reform and Pro-
gressive Conservative Parties
to duke it out for a distant sec-
ond spot. At press time early
Tuesday morning, Mr.
McTeague had 21.309 votes to
8.917 for Progressive Conserv-
ative candidate Leanne Lewis.

Reform Party and 2.166 for the
NDP's Doug Grey, with 174 of

"Oh boy! Oh boy! I'm Liberal MP Dan McTeague and wife Daniela accept con -
speechless:' exclaimed Mr. gratulation from supporters at the incumbent's campaign

ing results posted at his Picker- -- - — __ --
ing headquarters. Mr. McTeague described his overwhelming victory
as a "vindication" for his independent style of politics, which saw him
occasionally at odds with his party over its last term of government. r
Mr. McTeague admitted the regional split in Parliament that has resultC a
-
ed from the national vote was a cloud on the horizon. Though he
believes it might intensify the divisions already existing in the country, 1 • •
he said it could also bring people together to heal them.
"It's very precarious. A majority as slim as this one will farce a lot
of people to reconsider what kind of country they want:'
PC candidate Leanne Lewis attributed her distant second -place
showing to the provincial trend. "Ibis is a swing riding. It tends to 20
reflect what's going on with the province and tonight the province
wants to vote Liberal" Ms. Lewis noted she was pleased the PCs have
managed to achieve official party status, but also expressed concern O
about the regional split in Parliament.
Reform candidate Ken Griffith was pleased with his party's nation-
al standing as official opposition but wasn't happy about his third-
place finish./
"I guess people didn't want to educate themselves or they were T
quite simply afraid of change. Reform will be back and we'll be say-
ing 'We told you so.' We thought the people would vote for something
and not against something. 21 Ow
The NDP also had a bittersweet night. Candidate Doug Grey was
delighted with his party's showing and the NDP's return as an official
party. But he ran a weak fourth behind the others. "We didn't have a 1
very good showing. We established the party. We met our goal "

Progressive Conservative candidate Frank Snyder. She t";
joins Liberals elected across Durham. "I'm numb. "I'm absolutely
_ numb:' she said. "I'm just so
proud of my campaign team ... they've just been my strength ., Besides
being overwhelmed, Mrs. Longfield said she's "a little frightened. It's a
*_ little daunting to be in this situation:' she said, adding, "the people are
going to keep me on the straight and narrow" She said it's going to take
"a little while" for her win to sink in and says she didn't give a thought
• • to the outcome.
"I had to focus on the job at hand," she said. "I honestly didn't think
177 beyond. It hasn't really sunk in"
Reform candidate Bill Serjeantson, who finished second with 11,456
votes, said voter apathy in the riding worked against Reform and that
some voters "went with a safe choice" in voting Liberal.
2 "We had a clear sense of that (apathy) on Sunday when we were can-
vassing:' he said from his campaign office in Whitby.
52 It's "back to work" for Mr. Serjeantson, who added he will still con-
tinue to pursue his political aspirations.
PC candidate Frank Snyder, who finished third with 9,495 votes, con-
gratulated Mrs. Longfield, but said he expects the Liberals to pick up on
54 C 1 Tory policies.
"Ihe campaign was gruelling, but well worth it," he said. "I think we
had a great platform. The Liberals don't have ideas to deal with the
M deficit or rising health costs"
Mr. Snyder said he will now return his attention to his business, and
we will reassess his political career at a later date.
1 "Ibere's always a tomorrow in politics," he said .
NPD candidate Karen Dolan received 3,214 votes and Canadian
Action Party candidate Robert Radford scared 373 votes.

Pickering and Ajax voters have not shown
'strong loyalty to any federal political party in
recent years.
They've provided long terms to both Con-
mrvative and liberal candidates in the past.
,And in 1993, when the Reform Party fust
terttenod the federal election fray here, local vot-
!ers gave the new guys on the block 31 per cent
d their vote.
In `93, Liberal Dan McTeague won Ontario
Riding — which used t6 include all of Picker -
sag and Ajax — in a Liberal sweep through
,ptrtario that saw the party take all but one seat
in Ilse province.
pickemg-Ajax-Uxbridge was part of
Ontario Riding before being broken off from it
in a redrawing of boundaries for this election.
However, evert if Pickering -Ajax -Uxbridge
had existed then, calculations done by Flec-
tions Canada using individttal poll results indi-
cate Mr. McTeague would have taken the rid-
ing with 43 per cent of the vote, well ahead of
the 31 per cent which would have gone to
Reform candidate Don Sullivan and the 20 per
cent which Progressive Conservative incum-
bent MP Rene Soe tens would have won. NDP
candidate Lynn Jacklin would have pulled in
2.4 per cent of the vote while the seven others
vying for the job (representing the National
Party, the Libertarian Party, the Green Party,
in Ic
the Natural Law Party, the Party for the Com-
monwealth of Canada, the Abolitionist Party
and one independent) would have collectively
received 3.1 per cent.
Mr. McTeague actually won Ontario Riding
with 43 per cent of the ballots, to 31 per cent
for Refam, 19 per cant for the PCs and 3.1 per
cent for the NDP.
In 1988, when the Brian Mulroney Conser-
vative's won a second tam nationally, Mr.
Soetens took the riding with 49 per cent of the
vote, to 32 per cent for the Liberals' John
Roberts and 18 per cant for the NDP's Jim
Wisema n.Wben the Mulroney government
first came b power in Ottawa in 1984, PC
Kcal riding
incumbent Scott Fennel won Ontario Riding
with a whopping 56 per cent of the vote. Gary
Herrema took 23 per cent for the Liberals
while NDP candidate Geoff Rison came up
with 20 per cent. Ontario Riding went against
the national Liberal trend in 1980 by returning
the incumbent MP, Mr. Fennell, with 41 per
,,,.,cant of its vote, while Liberal candidate Doug
Dickerson took 32 per cent and NDP represen-
tative Geoff Rison received 26 per cent.
In 1979, Mr. Fennell took Ontario Riding
for the PCs from incumbent Nam Cafik, who
first won it for the Liberals in 1%8, when
Piers Trudeau swept into power, and war re-
elected in 1972 and 1974.

The more
things change ...
It wasn't as easy as 1993, but the Liberals have done it
again ... and that's good news for the immediate future of our
country.
The Liberals won the slimmest of majorities with 155 seats
but it was Ontario which provided critical support as a red tide
swept across the country's largest province, vaulting the gov-
ernment to 99 out of 103 seats. That's one more than the 98 of
99 seats the Liberals claimed in 1993.
Locally, it was a cakewalk for Liberal candidates in the rid-
ings of Oshawa, Durham, Northumberland, Whitby -Ajax and
Pickering -Ajax -Uxbridge.
Veteran Whitby town councillor Judi Longfield, who took
sane flak for accepting a nomination from the prime minister,
easily knocked off her challengers. Ivan Grose (Oshawa), Alex
Shepherd (Durham), Christine Stewart (Northumberland) and
Dan McTeague (Pickering -Ajax -Uxbridge) breezed to victory
much as they did in 1993. In fact, the 16 GTA ridings were a
dominant Liberal red, as was the whole province. Yes, inde-
pendent John Nunziata won his Toronto -area riding and a Ione
Reformer (as in 1993) and a single NDP member were elect-
ed in Ontario. The Liberals were chastened in Atlantic Canada
where high-profile cabinet ministers Doug Young, in New
Brunswick, and David Dingwall, in Nova Scotia, were beaten.
Jean Charest and the Tories earned small solace with a whop-
ping 14 seats in Atlantic Canada but just six elsewhere.
Surprises? The Bloc slipped to 44 seats, the Reform jumped
to 60 and yes, Preston Manning will be the leader of the
Official Opposition. The NDP was a big surprise, winning
eight seats in Atlantic Canada and 21 across the country over-
all to easily claim a place as an official party in the House of
Commons.
What does it all mean? The Liberals can continue their pro-
gram to eliminate the deficit and Paul Martin is well-placed to
take over as leader sometime in the next three to four years.
Reform can lead the opposition in the House, emphasizing the
programs Preston Manning holds dear to his heart. The Bloc is
where it belongs — on the outside looking in as the third party
in the House. The result is about the best the country could
hope for. Ontario is once again on the winning team and should
have enormous influence at the cabinet and caucus table. A
strong contingent of 27 Liberals from Quebec should ensure
proper preparation for a unity showdown with Lucien
Bouchard, expected before the end of the century. Canadians
can smile once again as the people have spoken and chosen to
vote for Canada.

who don't see farther than the next
election. Why must Pickering always
be designated a bedroom community
by backward thinking by council?
If EPD does locate in another
community, which is hardly likely
because the methane gas is here and
can be used practically, we stand to
lose.
EPD's proposal for a facility that
would din waste into r cyclabies
and energy has to be approved by the
Ministry of the Environment and
Energy and certified efficient.
Why are some members of coun-
cil opposed? Am there other reasons?
In trey opinion I don't think the only
sour note was EPD.
Is Pickering Council becoming
too complaint?

Avoid agony
of de -feet
Bet you didn't know June is National
Footcare Month in Canada
I was also unaware of this special 30 -day
span to honor our southern -most appendages.
But, a press release from Dr. Scholl's, the corpo-
rate guardians of our tootsies, changed all that.
The company has released its national foot-
care survey, conducted by the COMPAS Inc.
research firm, which reveals some startling facts
about those long-suffering and misunderstood
extremities.
You're likely dismissing the survey as anoth-
er frivolous, mostly useless, and somewhat irrel-
evant piece of information. But, just stop for a
moment and think about your feet. You walk on
them, run on them, shove them into your shoes
and, if you're like me, generally don't give your
feet a second thought.
It's time to put your dogs up and discover
something new and exciting about your feet.
They'll thank you for it.
Sum' =)'s---
* Men are more turned on by feet than
women. Yup, 26 per cent of men surveyed have
foot fetishes, to only 17 per cent of women.
Moreover, those with a university eduucabon (23
per cent), and Quebecers (32 per cent) are more
likely to find feet sexy than Albertans (10 per
cent). Young people also find feet more sexy
than do older Canadians by a margin of 27 to 13
per cent.
* Wayne Gretzky tops the list of Canadian
celebrities in whose shoes men would most like
to walk. Among women surveyed, Pamela
Wallin and Alanis Mo issette tied for this dis-
tinction, followed by rower Silken Laumann and
author Margaret Atwood.
* About one in 10 Canadians are embar-
rassed by the size of their -feet. lWice as many
women 0 2 per cent) fret about their foot size
than men (five per cant). Quebecers are the least
ashamed of their longfellows.
* Ahnost half of the survey respondents, 48
Per cant, have some sort of foot admeat, the
most prevalent being toemW pnoblenns.
* Albertans are mar likely to iarve toenail
problems (13 per cent) than arty other povinoe,
while Ontrrians report more cor (10
Per car).
So, take cane of your toes. Avoid the agony of
de -feu.

BY CHRISTY CHASE
STAFF REPORTER
Results are unknown of last week's vote
by Durham Board of Education high school
teachers on whether to hold province -wide
job sanctions related to anticipated provin-
cial legislation.
The members of the Durham chapter of
the Ontario Secondary School Teachers'
Federation (OSSTF) voted last Tuesday
after being asked to give the federation a
mandate for a variety of job actions, upto
and including a province -wide strike if
Queen's Park introduces legislation that will
change union rights, as teachers believe.
Pat Jermey, who heads the
OSSTF locally, says the local results
aren't being calculated here but are
being sent directly to OSSTF head-
quarters which will then announce
results when all voting is completed.
"We're certainly looking for a
strong result here;" she says.
Ms. Jermey says any actions
planned by the federation will not
come about unless the government
..moved to limit or alter our collec-
tive bargaining rights"
The union believes the provincial
government plans to introduce legis-
lation in June that would restrict
teachers' contracts.
However, Durham West M PP
Janet Ecker, Minister of Community
and Social Services, says the track
record of some union spokesmen in
predicting government legislation
has been "abysmal".
She says some people predicted
Bill 104 would see school janitors
and secretaries fired but "Bill 104 had
nothing to do with that.
"I can't believe the teachers who 1
know, with their passion for kids,
would risk the education of these kids
for speculation;' Ms. Ecker says. " I
think asking people to break the law
and risk the education of children is
wrong.
"I know there arc some differences
of opinion on education reform and I
respect that. We need to keep talk-
ing."

Jf VAVASOUR W
In loving memory, of
Margaret and Gordon
Our much loved and sadly missed
Mother and Father
Who passed away June. 1996
Our lives go on without you,
And nothing is the same.
We try to hide our heartache,
When someone speaks your name.
Sad are the hearts that love you,
Silent the tears that fall,
Living our lives without you,
Is the hardest part of all.
you did so many things for as.
Your hearts were kind and true.
And when we needed someone,
We could always count on you.
Thu special years will not repun,
When we were all together.
But with the love within our hearts.
You'll walk with us forrver.
Loved too much to ever be forgotten
Your children, grandchildren
and great grandchildren.
Go Ahead...
Push Our Buttons.
