People should take extra care when
using adhesive bandages, warns a
Pickering woman whose daughter
recently opened one stained with what
looked like blood.
But, a spokesman for the manufactur-
er says the stain is likely from a marker
used to identify defective bandages.
" 1 think the public should be aware of
this:' says Judy Harris, whose daughter.
Mcagan, found the dark, red stain on a
sealed bandage she had just opened to
cover a cut on her knee.
"She just screamed and called me."
The bandage came from a box of 60

Catholic high
school teachers
vote to strike
Elementary teachers
urged to ratify contract
High school teachers with the
Durham Region Roman Catholic
Separate School Board have given their
negotiating team an overwhelming strike
mandate.
The teachers voted 95.6 per cent to
reiect the board's latest contract offer and
S5.0 per cent in favor of a strike when
they cast ballots Friday, says Tony
White, head of the Durham secondary
unit of the Ontario English Catholic
eachers Association (OECTA).
He says 362 of the eligible 400 teach-
ers voted on both questions. The staff
representatives were to meet Monday
afternoon to set out strategy for the
union's negotiating team for further
negotiations with the board, he says.
Mr. White adds the teachers hope to
.-A--t up more meetings with the board as
soon as possible.
No strike date has been set, he says.
Meanwhile, about 1,000 Catholic ele-
mentary teachers were to meer at
Heydenshore Pavilion in Whitby late
Monday afternoon to vote on whether to
accept a tentative agreement reached
with the board. Mamie Wilcox, head of
the teachers' negotiating team, said the
team is recommending the teachers
accept the offer The results of the vote
were not available at press time.
A spokesman for the board could not
be reached for comment.
Contracts for both secondary and ele-
mentary teachers expired at the end of
August 1996 but the terms and condi-
tions of both agreements have been
extended.
Police chase ends as stolen car crashes in Pickering
- PICWUUl 9 — A brief police chase of a
stolen car carne to an abrupt end when the driver
crashed into two trees and a cement light stan-
dard in Pickering early Saturday.
•nue driver of a 1996 Honda Accord which
had been stolen earlier in Toronto sped off when
patrolling officers auernpted to stop him in the
arca of Strads Lane and Rosebank Road
around 1:45 am., Durham Regional Police said.
Soon into the chase, however, the car went
out of control and slammed into two trees and
the light standard.
The driver was arrested at the scene while a
passenger ran off and eluded capture, police
said. The crash caused $4,000 property damage
and $7,000 damage to the car.
Police said a 16 -year-old Scarborough boy
has been charged with theft over $5,000, posses-
sion of stolen property over $5,000, failing to
stop for police and dangerous driving.

Bandage scare prompts Durham health department probe
BANDAGE/From page 1 similarly contaminated bandage, Mr. "It's a red magic marker that's used to
Ms. Harris bought May 7 at a Pickering
supermarket.
Though the box itself was not sealed
each bandage was enclosed in a sealed
paper covering. The stain was about one
inch in length and the pad it was on
appeared to be off-centre. Her daughter
noticed the stain before touching that
part of the bandage or putting it on her
knee.
Ms. Harris took the contaminated
bandage and its box to the Durham
Region health department, which is con-
ducting an investigation into the matter.
But she doesn't even know what the
department can do to prevent such an
incident from happening again, and is
especially worried about a small child
opening a contaminated bandage and
using it.
"I don't know where you'd begin. It's
impossible to go through every single
box of bandages. So what's the solu-
tion?"
"We don't feel there was any danger
to the individual involved," says Alex
Connor, environmental health manager
for the health department. He adds the
danger to the public is "next to nil
because it's visible and easy to spot:'
Though the health department is
investigating, explains Mr. Connor, it
must turn to other agencies for assistance
because it doesn't have the laboratory
equipment to determine exactly what the
stain is and because the bandages have
been manufactured in the U.S.
"Sometimes these things can be diffi-
cult to track down;' he notes, and a fed-
eral agency will probably have to get
involved since it's a cross-border matter.
If someone else finds a contaminated
bandage and if the stain is blood, says
Mr. Connor, it's possible there could be
some danger from touching it. He notes
viruses like HIV do not survive long out-
side the human body, but a virus such as
hepatitis could survive as many as seven
days.

STAFF REPORTER
None of the candidates
vying to represent
Pickering -Ajax -Uxbridge in
the House of Commons will
be feeding at the govern-
ment pension trough if they
become the local Member
of Parliament.
Under the current rules,
MPs are eligible for pen-
sions after serving six years
in the House of Commons
(not necessarily consecu-
tively). They contribute nine
per cent of their pay on a
monthly basis to their pen-
sion fund, which makes
them eligible to receive an
annual pension equalling
four per cent of their aver-
age pay for each year of ser-
vice in the House — which
would be 24 per cent after
six years.
MPs are entitled to
receive any pension entitle-
ments accrued before July
1995, when the rules were
changed, as soon as they
leave the House.
Pension entitlements
accrued after 1995 may only
be collected at age 55. The
1995 rule change also
allowed MPs to opt out of
the pension plan, which
some did, charging it was
too generous. Pension
deductions were no longer
made from the pay cheques
of those MPs.
Liberal Dan McTeague,
who was the MP for Ontario
Riding before Pickering -
split off from it, opted out of
the pension plan and says he
would continue to remain
opted out.
He maintains MPs
should only receive a pen-
sion at the same level as is
generally available in the
private sector, and they
should become eligible to
receive pension payments at
65 like nearly everyone else.
Mr. McTeague believes
the changes to the MP pen-
sion plan made by the
Liberal government left a
plan that was still too gener-
ous.
"It's a far cry from what
ordinary people would
expect of us as leaders. I've
always felt I can't advocate
austerity for everybody else
as a politician and decision -
maker while indulging
myself."
Reform Party candidate
Ken Griffith would follow
his party's philosophy and
refuse his MP pension as
well. Reform policy calls
for an end to full indexation
of MP pensions, postpone-
ment of eligibility for bene-
fits until at least age 60 and
subjecting MP pensions to
tax -back the same way as
Old Age Security benefits.
"We do not want the
gold-plated pension plan,"
says Mr. Griffith. "Basically
what we're saying is the
pension should be no more
generous than the private
sector norm,...
says he would opt out of the
pension plan, but adds he
supports the concept of pen-
sions in principle.
"I believe in fair com-
pensation for the position,"
explains Mr. Grey, and that
would include a pension and
benefits similar to that
available in the private sec-
tor for a comparable posi-
tion.
The problem with the
pension system for MPs, he
says, is that it's much more
generous than is available in
the private sector.
He would like to see all
parties get together to come
up with a fair pension sys-
tem.
gr e
candidate Leanne Lewis
says she will opt out of the
MP pension plan as well.
"I was one of the ones
who worked and advocated
in the (Conservative) party
for elimination of the gold-
plated pension plan in favor
of an RRSP kind of plan"
Under such a plan, she
explains, the employer and
employee contribute jointly
to an RRSP.
MPs could only draw on
the pension funds when they
became eligible to draw on
their RRSPs.
"The goal is to have
something that is compara-
ble to the private sector;'
says Ms. Lewis.

yard projects this summer. CLOCA is asking
residents to check with the authority office
regarding the need for a permit before starting
projects that involve the placing of landfill or
the construction or alteration of waterways.
"People are becoming aware that their
actions have a direct relationship to the health
of the watershed in which they live," says
Russ Powell, chief administrative officer of
the authority.
"By continuing to work together we can
manage our watershed resources to safeguard
life, structures and homes from flooding and

Durham relay runners just
want to -give peace a chance
Peace torch passes through
Ajax and Pickering on
eastern route
BY SUSAN O'NEILL
DURHAM STAFF
WHITBY – A relay team on a mission to
spread the message of world peace ran through
Durham Region yesterday as part of a global
marathon.
The Peace Run passed through the region
making stops at Pickering's Dunbarton High
School, Whitby Town Hall and the Whitby
Montessori School before joining a track meet
at Oshawa's Civic Fields.
"The whole idea is peace begins with 'me",'
Says Heather Hurst of the Whitby Montessori
School. "We just thought it would be a great
opportunity to promote the idea that it starts at
home."
Ms. Hurst says she was eager to bring the
group of runners to the school to talk to stu-
dents about multiculturalism and heritage.
"It's a marvelous idea;" she says. adding
"every step these runners take brings us a little
closer to realizing the dream."

Every two years thousands of people join
together in the Olympic -style relay organized
by the Sri Chinmoy Marathon Team, an inter-
national running organization that believes
"sports can be a powerful instrument for pro-
moting world peace," says Sutapa Adelman of
the Toronto chapter.
Each participant runs either a few metres or
kilometres with a flaming torch which symbol-
izes the message of peace and harmony.
There are teams of men, women and chil-
dren running in the marathon, in over 70 coun-
tries around the world. The marathon kicked
off at the United Nations in New York in April,.
Each participating country has a core team
of runners who spread the message of peace by
running the road but Ms. Adelman says mem-
bers of the public are also welcome to join in
along the way.
The Canadian leg of the run began in
Niagara Falls on Saturday and is expected to
end in Quebec City on June 6.
Ms. Adelman says the marathon is not tied
to a political cause and is not a fund-raising
event.
She says the Sri Chinmoy organization is
hoping to turn the run into an annual coast to
coast event in the future.

Reform steps
over the line
Don't they ever learn? The Tories under Kim
Campbell made the gaffe of the 1993 federal elec-
tion campaign when they ran commercials which
made fun of Jean Chretien's appearance and the
Liberal leader's birth defect. The ads asked,
"Would you want this man as your prime minis-
ter?" They were quickly pulled after a public out-
cry, but the ultimate answer Canadians came up
with was a resounding `Yes'. And Ms. Campbell,
after a short, high flight, was grounded forever.
This time around, it's Preston Manning and the
Reform Party who have crossed the line with their
TV commercials depicting Jean Chretien and Jean
Charest as Quebec politicians and lumping in the
latter two with Bloc Quebecois leader Gilles
Duceppe and Quebec premier Lucien Bouchard.
Is Manning merely a Western politician? is he
only an Alberta or Calgary politician? Of course
not. Neither for that matter are Jean Chretien or
Jean Charest merely Quebec politicians. They are
national leaders who are running candidates coast
to coast in all 301 ridings, a claim Mr. Manning
can't make about his own party. In fact, Mr.
Chretien and Mr. Charest both battled to the bitter
end in October of `95 to keep Canada together. We
didn't see much of Mr. Manning then, did we?
To take it even further, Jean Chretien (elected in
1962) and Jean Charest (elected in 1984) have
spent virtually their entire adult lives in elected
office and have been first-class fighters for
Canada. Yes, they've faced a backlash in the
province of their birth as so-called sell-outs to
English Canada, but they've fought for the rights
of Quebecers within a unified Canada. There is no
disputing that.
Yet Mr. Manning and his party are suggesting
Mr. Chrdtien and Mr. Charest are no better than
Mr. Duceppe or Mr. Bouchard (or former Quebec
Premier Jacques Parizeau for that matter). That's
just not fair and it's just not honest.
Preston Manning has absolutely no credibility
in Quebec. If we value our country, we want him
nowhere near the debate when the next referen-
dum comes around. His TV commercials and his
policies with regard to Quebec are divisive and
destructive.

Parents must
minimize chance
children will

of predators
To the editor:
Regarding the May 21 News
Advertiser story about the Oshawa
Turul soccer coach charged with
sexually assaulting a 12 -year-old:
As a father of two and a minor
hockey coach of nine years, I find
the subject of Oshawa Turul soccer
coach Mark Dodsley and junior
hockey coach Graham James very
disturbing.
While the idea of minor sporting
associations performing police
background checks on prospective
coaches is probably a good one, it's
only a start.
Why? Graham James had no
police record. At the time, a back-
ground check on him would have
revealed nothing. If implemented,
background checks should only be
used as a precaution to avoid the
obvious. Background checks will
give the impression the issue of
authority figures preying on the
innocent has been dealt with, and in
the long run may provide a false
sense of security to the community.
The ultimate responsibility lies
with us, the parents.
Sadly, predators like James will
always exist, however we as parents
must minimize the risk to our chil-
dren by being 100 per cent involved
in their daily activities, sports, etc..

Walking down
memory lane
After months of anticipation, the big
event has come and gone.
I attended my high school reunion ear-
lier this month and other than having a
renewed interest in all things purple and
gold — the official colors of Henry Street
High School in Whitby — things have
pretty well returned to normal.
The exercise bike has found its way
back to the closet, my yearbooks are again
collecting dust and worries about whether
1'd bore former school chums if I toll the
truth about what I've been doing these
past years have been put to nest.
(Let's just hope they don't meet up
with my parents and ask them about the
role I had in the movie Crocodile Dundee
while spending a year Down Under. And I
really hope no one questions that story
about me bungee jumping off the Eiffel
Tower.)
I shoved pictures of my adorable kids
into more faces than probably cared to see
and had a great time catching up with my
old pals and teachers — some of whom
poked way better than they should have.
I'm still laughing after a friend remind-
ed me of a trip we took to the beer store to
return evidence — I mean empties — fol-
lowing a party. When we were told there
were still full beer bottles in the case, we
actually insisted we didn't meed them.
(I've been wordering if it's too late to
ask for those beers back. I know it's been
a few years — after all, those were the
days when people took a second look at
me even after checking my I.D. — but
summer is coming up and you never know
when someone might drop by.)
I'm also still amused after reading a
:mews clipping about a car rally at the
school while I was there. Seems some stu-
dents were angry when the principal
imposed a limit on the number of cars
which could enter and someone hung a
swastika outside the school. I'm still a Tit-
tle jealous about students who attended
school in the 160s and had real issues to
protest -
But for now, I can treasure my new-
found memories.
And worry about when the next
reunion will be.

Ajax -Pickering Board of Trade
calls for infrastructure projects
BY ROB BURBIDGE
SPECIAL TO TH6 NEWS ADVERTISER
Ajax and Pickering business
leaders are calling for a variety
of infrastructure projects to stim-
ulate new economic growth here.
The eight public and private
initiatives were proposed at a
recent Ajax -Pickering Board of
Trade round -table discussion
attended by 20 business leaders
and sponsored by The Royal
Bank.
Pickering Mayor Wayne
Arthurs, Ajax Mayor Steve
Parish and Durham Chairman
Jim Witty also -gave their support
to the recommendations.
The Board of Trade plans to
lobby governments to support
the initiatives.
Business leaders think further
economic growth could be
sparked by three road projects —
the extension of Hwy. 407 to
Brock Road in Pickering and

and improvement of connecting
roads that run north and south.
They also want enhanced
training at Durham College to

Mayor Arthurs said in an
interview the education and
transportation projects are espe-
cially important for strengthen-
ing the area's economy.

the area's economic health," he
said, adding he's "overjoyed" to

the transportation initiatives are
short-term projects, the educa-
tion initiatives are important for
the area's long-term economy.
He said post -secondary edu-
cation initiatives like a university
campus would give people
access to "the skills required for
the economy of the future," and
also help local businesses attract
the skilled labor they need to
compete.
Lesley Whyte, general man-
ager of the Board of Trade, said
the business community also
wants a conference facility in
Ajax or Pickering to improve the
area's image and attract invest-
mcni.
"Everybody at the table said
that, at least once a year, they
have to go to Scarborough to
hold conferences;" said Ms.
Whyte.
"They would prefer to have
them here. It's a Catch-22 situa-
tion. If you don't have a facility,
you don't have an image. If you
have no image, it's hard to get a
facility"
Ms. Whyte said the Board of
Trade is actively lobbying the
Province to proceed with the
Hwy. 401 and 407 projects and
before summer, the board will
pressure governments to support
the other initiatives.
She said the board would be
happy to see any of the projects
done as part of a government
infrastructure program.
The board plans to hold a sec-
ond round -table discussion in the
fall to assess progress made on
these initiatives and talk about
any new issues.
Local MPs and MPPs will be
invited.
The Board of Trade repre-
sents about 450 local businesses.
