But, the responses to our federal election ques- tionnaire, which all candidates in the ridings received, provide an interesting look into what we're getting ourselves into. Don't get us wrong. who will get elected is ulti- mately up to you to decide. But we learned some- thing from both the process and the substance of the answers candidates provided. On the process: Some of the candidates were quick to return their answers to us, easily beating the deadline we imposed and writing concise, well - thought -out answers to our direct questions. Some candidates clearly counted the words in their responses being careful to come in under the 75 - word limit. These candidates have our thanks and our respect, though not necessarily our endorse- ment. On the substance of the responses: Each candi- date returned answers which were eloquent, expressed with conviction, and which contained ideas offering very different methods of governing our nation. And those differences between the candidates provided the most compelling reaction here. Each candidate — and each candidate's party — tend to agree on which are the important issues facing their constituents. But, the way they propose to go about addressing those issues are extremely interesting. You may disagree with one or all, but at the very least you'll see some subtle and not -so -subtle dif- ferences in philosophies, approaches and pledges. The report in today's News Advertiser, we believe, is a fair and insightful representation of what the candidates and their parties stand for in seeking your vote June 2. We encourage you to closely read the answers the candidates offered (on pages 28 and 29) in today's News Advertiser. We know the exercise has helped us get to know them a little better. J7r- Y ISSUE ft? \, v Letters to the editor CPP premium increase good investment To the editor: In the story of the Whitby -Ajax Riding federal election all -candidates' meeting in the May 16 News Advertiser. Reform Party candidate Bill Serjcantson is reported as stating an increase in the Canada Pension Plan premiums is equiv- alent to a tax increase, and called the increase substantial, the biggest increase in the country's history. Premiums to the CPP are net taxes. Although they are part of government spending, people get a return on the money spent. What the federal government did, with agreement from the provinces, was to improve the plan and to ensure its future as the public has been demanding for a number of years. This is a good investment when you consider that a person who has been pay- ing the maximum amount for a given number of years can receive a monthly pension almost equal to one year's employee contribution based on the 1996 rates. Once you know it all, real learning starts To the editor: As I was reading John Doleweerd's guest column in the May 14 News Advertiser headlined 'Tories abdicate duties in name of fighting deficit', it struck me how tlx: young third -year York University student's thinking reminded me of myself when I was that age. So, without criticizing York University, I would like to pass on to Mr. Dolewecrd what I was told by my dad: "It's what you learn after you know it all that really counts. My dad was right. Once you know it all, the real life learn- ing starts ... and never ends. KEITH GILLIGAN Ajax Staff Writer What to do with my vote I'm in the middle of a classic Canadian dilemma — do I base my vote on a local candidate or on a national party? Alter seeing the hopefuls in my riding of Whitby -Ajax in action, Relbrmer Bill Serjtantson has impressed me the mcnt. but there's no way I'd ever vote for the party. It's too extreme and Preston Manning sounds too whiny. I'll fess up and admit the Ncu Democratic Party is my usual choice. But, NDP leader Alcxa McDonough Ire-, conceded the party won't win and is run- ning fix second place, at best. And. I'm looking for a platform not based on tax- ing the wealthy (not that I'm enc of those wealthy types). TFx Canadian Action Party has IxKen- tial. How can you not be impressed by a political party that introduce% itself with a comic hoiok? But they aren't running can- didates in every riding and have nr, chance of firming a government. 1 have a problem with itis Liberals and that's where the local vs. national dilem- ma comes in. Local candidate Judi Lortgfiekl seems to know her stud' and would probably be- a litre MP But, Fin Mg interest in Prime Minister Jean lien. The one Ubcral 1 like is I'aul Martin. I'vc ruled out the Progressi%c Conservatives. I'm just not buying that 'we'll cut your taxes 10 per cent and hal- ance the budget' line. A let of things look good on paper. Putting them in place is another matter altogether. There arc the options of not voting at all or casting a protest vote. But those choices seem to be such a waste. Voting is a duty, so I'll vote. And, 1'd rather vote for somebody instead of against someone. Another dilemma is whether to vote at an advance poll or wait until June 2. If I cast my ballot early, I'll probably sit around thinking I made the wrong choice. Most individuals know the overall colors and styles that they want to incorporate into the space. The harder part is knowing what materials and products to include in order to create the desired look. "it is very important to have an understanding of the pros and cons of the various cabinets and surface materials that are available;' explains Doris Lacroix, CKD, CBD, 1997 president of the National Kitchen & Bath Association (NKBA). Part of the process, according to Lacroix, is knowing the terminology. Following are some important definitions to learn as you prepare for a kitchen project. There weren't any major studio releases in the theatres this week because for the studios summer starts Memorial Day weekend, which just happens to be next week. After that, you can expect nothing short of major titles opening every week. The video market picks up the slack this week by releasing four major titles. The first is a battle in the stars and on Earth in Star Trek: First Contact (rated /aA). This is the eighth film in the series and it is directed by 'Number One' himself, Jonathan Frak&. Captain Picard (Patrick Stewart) and the rest of the crew return for another adventure in the 23rd centu- ry with a new Enterprise and old enemies. This time the infamous Borg is their main concern as they are on a destructive course that is aimed right at Earth. The Enterprise arrives just in time to stop the Borg from assimi- lating the planet in the 23rd century but not before the crew has the chance to launch a time -travelling probe. Caught in its wake, the crew members travel back along with it and discover they have only one chance to stop the Borg from domi- nating the planet forever. There are many new faces in the Star Trek universe, including James Cromwell (Babe) who plays Cochrane, the inventor of the warp drive. His invention allows for space travel and is the reason humans make "first contact". This movie is not only carried along by the horrifying story of the Borg but by a great musical score as well. If the Star Trek series contin- ues to stay in the sci-fi/action drama genre, it will definitely continue on into the next century. I checked my watch only two times. The other major release that comes to video this week is Sylvester Stallone's movie in which he searches for Daylight (rated 14A). This subterranean disaster ► flick was directed by Rob Cohen, who directed the Oscar -nominated Dragonheart just last summer. k When a runaway car crashes into a truck carrying toxic waste in an underground tunnel, the result is a massive explosion that seals both ends. Emergency experts find there is a way in but it can't be used as a way out. Taking the chance that he may -tot come out alive, Stallone goes in tto try to save the survivors. t Over the past year the disaster t genre has been used by Hollywood quite a bit. As a councillor for six years, I have worked hard for my constituents, served their interests, and put them first. 1 commit to putting Whitby -Ajax first in Ottawa. From door-to-door discussions, it became apparent to me that the most important current issue to the people in our riding is jobs. By appropriate direction of its monetary incentive programs, the government can motivate banks, corporations and individuals to invest in the production and consumption of goods and services, in preference to financing corporate mergers, take-overs, and speculative investments. This will create the kind of jobs we need. Whitby -Ajax has a high percentage of young families. These young families, like all Canadians, are struggling under a heavy tax bur- den heaped on them by successive Liberal and Tory governments. Reform will reduce taxes for all Canadians, providing $2,000 in tax relief for .the average family. Reform will give Canadian "families choice in child care by extending the "$3,000-$5,000 child care deduction to all fami- lies, including families where one patent stays home. The most important issue in our riding is jobs. The Conservative party will make job creation a riority by: cutting personal income taxes by 10 per cent within the first mandate to give con- sumers more disposable income and by eliminat- ing the $5 -billion plus surplus in the El fund. Employer premiums will be reduced from $4.06 per $100 of payroll to $3.08.
