Doing Durham by day... 0 There are tourist attractions right here at home The Bowmanville Zoo is just one of the many attrac- tions available to Durham Region residents BY CHRISTY CHASE STAFF REPORTER In just under two months, prime vacation sea- son will hit Durham Region. Summer holidays are no doubt being planned and dreamed about by kids and adults right now. While some are headed out of the area for their breaks, many people will spend their vacations at home, visiting the many tourist attractions our region boasts. "People are still staying close to home because of the dollar;' says Patti Watson, tourism and visitor services co-ordinator for Tourism Durham. There's something for everyone to enjoy in Durham, she says. Kids of* all ages will love the world's longest go-kart track in Whitby or Canada's oldest pri- vately -owned zoo which boasts a movie star. Bongo the lion. in Bowmam•tlle. History butts can go back in time at several municipal museums or the 554001111 mansion of General Motors of Canada founder Colonel Sam McLaughlin in Oshawa For purely adult tastes, try quarterhorse racing in Ajax, the new charitable casino in Scugog or winery tours in Scugog or Clarington. Tourism is a significant aspect of Durham's economy, pumping more than $300 million annually into area businesses. The tourism indus- try hopes to increase that to $500 million by attracting more people from within and without Durham. More than 30,000 jobs are created by the tourism sector, according to a Durham Region Economic Development Advisory Com- mittee report. Meanwhile, about two million people check out the tourist attractions here each year. Tour companies are now bringing busloads of visitors See SET/page 2 See PICKERIV. page 3 Strike? Oshawa 7:30 p.m. There is possibly no more difficult experience than to lose someone you have loved, and someone who has cared about you. it can be painful beyond words, and the feelings of grief are often overwhelming. Sometimes we wonder how we will be able to go on. And although the death of someone special is very significant, there can, in addition, be many other losses connected to the Siltation. Dr. Bid Webster learned about some of the effects of grief by experience. After :he death of his wife, he struggled to come to terms with many issues. He has written, 'It was when people thought I should be getting myself together that I fed Ike I was falling apart.- Ater he had worked through his grief process, he began to develop support programs for people who had suffered a sigrwficant loss, and in 1992 established the Centre for the Griet Journey. Dr. Webster is the author of five books, several audio tapes.and a new series of videos. Nov, Dr. Bill Webster returns to Oshawa to share some of his insights about loss and the grief reaction• and suggest some practical strategies to help us work through the gnel process towards reconciliation. For tatter Womution or to regisler for the Free Slimat irter plegated: t/'17.ce7i'•tJw//dt0L I FUNERAL HOME LIMITED 152 King St. E., Oshawa 433 -SSSS phot, It. R GRAND_BE-OPEN ING EaWM A whole new look and more product selection awaits customers at the newly revamped 1 Compucentre store in the Pickering Town Centre. Compucentre, which was extensively refurbished over the past two weeks, held its grand reopening this past Saturday, May 10. "We have a whole new look. We're completely renovated which has helped us enlarge our product lines. It looks totally different than it did before," says Compucentre's owner - manager Tim Glass. According to Mr. Glass, the store, which originally opened at its Pickering Town Centre location in 1989, needed a face lift to keep up with the new computer product lines com- ing on stream. The store was expanded to more than 1.500 -square feet from 900 -square. feet of floor space to better meet the needs of its customers "We certainly needed to renovate because we were swamped in the old premises" notes Mr. Glass. "We wanted to do more service work of computers and to give our store a whole new look as well. We've also found that over the years our product lines have increased and we needed to expand aur space" Compucentre carries a complete line of personal computers from su,:h name brands as IBM. Compaq, Hewlett-Packard, AST, NEC and Apple as well as all the related hardware for these PC makes. The store also carries a large variety of computer software for such applications as business, entertainment and lifestyle purposes. Two' also video games from Nintendo 64 and Sony Playstation as well as a wide assortment of game cartridges for these two video game makers. Compucentre also sells a wide range of calculators, organizers and data banks to meet all budgets. Compucentre is located in the Pickering Town Centre near the K Mart store. Hours of operation are Monday to Friday from 10 a.m. to 9 p m.; Saturday from 9:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Sunday from noon to 6 p m. Grand reopening week concludes on Saturday.
