In response to Al Rivett's May 6 column
headlined `Thanks to good sports', our
readers said:
"I want to thank Mr. Rivett for a wonderful article
acknowledging volunteers in minor sports, especial-
ly in hockey and the Durham West Girls' Hockey
Association. It was finally a positive article con-
cerning people who've spent so much time and
effort and have given tremendously over the years,
in our case to our sons. We really appreciated the
article. It was well-written."

v Letters to the editor
What has our
society come to?
To the editor:
Here arc parts of a con%crsatIon
o%cnccard recently on the GO. The
first woman. whom 1 call ';Mother'
didn't know where to put her old
couch. Her companion, the 'Friend'
suggested the recreation room.
Here is how it went from there.
Mother: "Oh. but i can't Infringe
on my daughter's pla,, arra`
Friend: "Your rcc room isn't that
small ... She could play on the couch
as well.
Mother: "No. no. She needs
room to spread out her Barbie
dolls."
Friend: " I guess she has a lot of
them'?"
Mother: "Yeah, she has 15 ... She
likes to play 'day care':'
I dozed off for a while, and was
next cognizant of the same two
women:
Friend: "...because these people
really have nothing at all:'
Mother: "I don't believe in giv-
ing handouts like that; we have our
own to worry about."
Friend: "We don't give hand-
outs; we teach them farming meth-
ods so they can support them-
selves."
Mother: "Well. I certainly can't
afford am%thing...1 don't think it's
our problem."
i continued on to work with a
heavy heart wondering if this is
what our society has come to
that we worry more about our chil-
dren's Barbie dolls than truly needy
people.' What values is this mother
passing on to her little girl'' Are we
really so shallow and materialistic'
if an immigrant from the Third
World heard this comersation.
what would he/she think of
Canadians:'
But wait' Whcn I focused on the
positive side of the comcnation, I
realized that 'Friend' thought dit-
ferently and seemed to he putting
her beliefs into action' Thank good-
ness'

Timing belt advice from
Thrifty Mechanic Shop
Thrifty Mechanic Shop owner Michel Saikali says that the timing belt, shown at right,
controls the intricate workings of the internal parts of your engine such as the pistons.
The belt should be replaced at the 80,000 to 100,000 km mark on most vehicles.
Many people don't know what a
timing belt is or what it does.
But you should, because when it
breaks, your vehicle won't be going
anywhere.
Timing belts replaced chains in
order to create today's sophisticated
engines. They're lighter, quieter and
help make today's sophisticated
engines possible. They're also more
efficient and less expensive than timing
chains.
"Like any other auto part, timing
belts eventually wear out," says Thrifty
Mechanic Shop owner Michel Saikali.
"So they need to be replaced before they
break."
When your belt breaks, depending
on what type of engine you have,
internal damage may occur.
Your engine is either an
"interference" or "free running" type
depending on its design. When a
timing belt breaks in an interference

a moving piston and this can result in
serious damage and expensive repairs.
"To avoid this situation, it's
important to have your belt replaced at
the proper mileage," explains Michel -
"Timing belts usually require changing
between 80,000 and 100,M) km on most
cars."
Michel has more than 29 years
experience and combines that with an
honest approach to doing business. He
,would rather see his customers prevent
