The belt should be replaced at the 80,000 to 100,000 km mark on most vehicles. Many people don't know what a timing belt is or what it does. But you should, because when it breaks, your vehicle won't be going anywhere. Timing belts replaced chains in order to create today's sophisticated engines. They're lighter, quieter and help make today's sophisticated engines possible. They're also more efficient and less expensive than timing chains. "Like any other auto part, timing belts eventually wear out," says Thrifty Mechanic Shop owner Michel Saikali. "So they need to be replaced before they break."
