LIS 21-15 PHONE: 683-5110 FAX: 683-7363 Publisher: Tim Whittaker ♦ Editorial Two heads are better than one Continued co-operation between Durham's public and separate school boards is a win-win situation for very hod-. The most recent case in point yeas revealed Tucsdav when the Durham Region Roman Catholic Separate School Board and the Durham Board of Education reached an aoreement that will see some students from an overcrowded separate school taught in It facilit} )caned by the puhlic board. About 2(X) pupils from Archbishop Fknis O'Connor Catholic High Schcx)l MA ' lax will attend classes at the Aldon Learmn Centre starting in Scptemher. All DOV students \%In because they'll no longer be learning in a sardine can. The pupils who will attend class at Aldon win because they will move from their cramped quarters to the nearby tI-tcilit\ that w ill he renovated to rnect their needs. Businesses near a warehouse that the separate board was considerinL for use by the 2(X) DO'C students w in because they won't experience loitering and littering that they'd feared. Students at Lord Durham Public School next door to Aldon w in hccause they'll get the pla}_•round equip- ment currentl\ at Aldon. The under -used Ajax High Sch(x)I might win hecausc it will likcl\ he used for Birk l'rincrsit\ teacher training. which will be mo\ed from Aldon. Durham"s public hoard and future users of Aldon win because the separate board w ill make renovations to Aldon to accommodate the DOC students. And, the public board will recel, e pupil accommcxlation grants from the `tinistr\ of Education for the separate boards use of the facility. Durham's separate board wins because it avoids the unpopular options of housing, DO'C students in a warehouse or in more portables at their high school, which is alreadv home to 16 of them. In the meantime. Durham's two school boards will continue to work together, along with Durham College, in planning a new multi -use education complex in north Ajax, which will further ease crowding at DO'C. Such co-operation by Durham's two school boards should serve as an example to other local governments and public agencies. Two heads are better than one when it comes to finding solutions to problems, in this case a solution that benefits all concerned parties. k-l'irifosomrCe To respond to this editorial call lnfosource at 683-7040 and dial 5104 Ajax -Pickering News Advertiser Publisher: Tim Whittaker A Metroland Community Newspaper bliched Tuesda Wednesda FridaySunda WLIGNAN... THE SEARCH CONTINUES FOR THE NEW CHIEF OF POLICE... v Letters to the editor Bill 104 loner overdue To the editor: As a frustrated IaxpaYer. I ani voicing my support for the pru\in- cial go%ernment's reform of the edu- cation s\stcrn. it seems that mana_c- ment of education in Durham is bc\ond the school board trustees. I-akc the situation at Ajax High School, for example. Here is a facil- ity with a capacity of more than 1.400 students and a population of only 900 while onk a few hundred yards away we ha\c Exeter High School with a capacity of (075 and a population of o%er 1.000 students. The halls of Ajax High are sparse- ly populated with dozens of empty lockers vet at Exeter there are at least 10 portables adjacent to the school. As I understand it, the cost of these portables to the taxpayers is in excess of $100,000. Then we have Archbishop Denis O'Connor High School. This sepa- rate board high school's administra- tion has been considering teaching students at an industrial complex due to overcrowding. It appears that overcrowding is mainly due to the fact that DO'C has more than 300 open access students, most of whom JOANNE BURGHARDT, Editor -in -Chief STEVE HOUSTON, Managing Editor BRUCE DANFORD, Advertising Manager ALVIN BROUWER, Retail Advertising Manager EDDIE KOLODZIEJCZAK, Classified Advertising Manager MONIQUE LEA, Real Estate Advertising Manager ABE FAKHOURIE, Distribution Manager BARBARA HARRISON, Production Manager JANICE O'NF.IL, Assistant Production Manager were tarsi-mc3 to attend :liar High. There arc even rumors that sonic administrators at DO'C ha\c been visiting public schools pronioling (tic ytrtucs of DOC to Grade 8 stu- dents. Exeter and DO'C, due to their burgeoning student populations (and the funding that conics with thein). are able to oftrr numerous actiyit(cs. particularly h(`_hly s isible sports. What we now see at Alax High is a icious circle. Therc is insutl'icient funding for many sports programs due to a dw indling population, while the school cannot attract new stu- dents because there are leu sports programs. The answer seems sinipie enough. Make a slight modification to the houndarIes for the feeder schools for Ajax and lxetcr. This would balance the population of both schools closer to their designed capacities and might even save sonic taxpayers' money. The Durham public school board, however, seems to be unwill- ing to take action on the issue. Our trustees have recently con- gratulated themselves for passing on only a small tax increase. I suggest that, if the above example is in any way typical, then things are out of control. Bill 104 is long overdue. E. & O.E. 'With 5% down. j Home Gard ening Time to tend your lawn? Decisions, decisions, decisions By Dr. Ellen Henke SPECIAL. TO THE NEWS ADVERTISER The meteorologist is calling for a beautiful,' sunshiny' weekend, but the yard is beginning to look like a jungle. You really need to spend some time tending to the lawn, but you want to relax, you can already see yourself at a ball game, fishing, or just reading a book. Decisions, deci- sions. Why not do both'? If your lawn equipment isn't in top condition, you may think relax- ing and doing yard work is more than one person can handle in a weekend. Perhaps it's time to look for a new mower. So when shopping for a new mower, pick a model that can make short work of your mowing chores. The type of lawn mower you pur- chase depends in large part on the size and contour of your property's lawn. Are there many trees or natural ureas? What about slopes? A walk -behind mower can handle up to one-third acre in about an hour. If you have lots of trees, shrubs or decorative features, walk -behind mowers allow you to maneuver through curves and into tight spaces. Look for a walk -behind mower with large diameter wheels because they roll more easily and save time, leav- ing more of the weekend for a little "R and R." 11' you have a larger yard with a number of mowing obstacles, con- sider a front mower. Front mowers can cut mowing time in half. With great visibility and front - mounted cutting deck, front mowers allow you to cut larger areas quickN and still get in tight for trimming around trees and shrubs. If your lawn is more than one-half acre, you need a riding mower or lawn tractor. A lawn and garden tractor is a good choice if you mow more than an acre, and want to plow or till a vegetable garden, pull a garden cart or add a number of other attach- ments to make your weekend life easier. Finally, when you buy, be sure you're getting a mulching mower or one for which mulching attachments are available. J University tests have proven that mulching mowers contribute to greener, healthier lawns and they can save time. Rather than bagging cli ppings. you can return them to the lawn Mulching mowers are especially good time savers in the fall. By attaching a material collection system to a walk -behind mower. you can mulch and redistribute the chopped leaves in a natural area or around trees and shrubs. With riding mowers, the mulching system actually pulverizes leaves so they can he returned to the turf and recycled in the soil. Lawn care dealers can help you choose a mower that best meets your yard's needs and makes this weekly chore easier and ma)he even a little fun. So you won't have to make the tough, life -changing decisions ... relax or mow the lawn? Lawn and garden expert Ellen Henke is a botanist, garden writer and nationally recognized authori- ty on "Earth Friendly" gardening.
