The only reason I quoted
the Catechism of the Catholic
church was because one of
the entrepreneurs in this sor-
did business openly stated
that he was a Roman Catholic
who went to church. I have no
qualms in suggesting that
several, perhaps hundreds of
the 5,000 customers are
Roman Catholics, probably
many of whom go to church
— again, that's their business
— the consequences, I am
sure, they are fully aware of.
In this life we each have our
moments of decision, alas, we
tend to forget that God has

Hey Jude......-.
Successful Pickering entrepreneur
helps others in fight against cancer
BY ROB Bi RRIDGE
SPECIAL TO IHF. N1 WS ADVJ:RIISI:R
PICKERING — Jude Hodgson will
s(x)n be dnN ing her seventh pink car, an
award for success with Mary Kay Cosmetics.
But that award, and many others she's won
over the years, tell only part of her story.
The Pickering resident likes to use the
word balance to describe her life. And she
has a lot to balance. She juggles it successful
career and a rewarding family lite with her
husband Bob and two children. and still has
time to run the Children's Ministry at St.
Paul's-on-thc-Hill ;\n,Iican Church and
work with cancer patients.
While Ms. Hodgson, -if,. has always been
careful to put her family life and spiritual life
ahead of her career. those priorities were put
into even clearer focus in 1988 w hen she was
diagnosed with breast cancer.
But her story d(wsn't end there. Instead
her diagnosis was sort of a beginning.
After receiving treatment, she decided to
do something positive and bound a way to
.nake it easier for women to light cancer with
dignity.
Along with nursing director Lcslec
Thompson and oncologist Dr. Deni
DePatrillo, Ms. Hodgson founded the
Appearance Concepts Foundation in
Toronto. Now called the L(x)k GoW Feel
Better Program, it helps reduce the effects of
cancer treatment li)r hundreds of women
across the country.
Look Good Feel Better is a joint initiative
of almost all cosmetics companies in
Canada.
The companies donate their skin pr<xiucts
and trained cosmeticians volunteer their time
to apply the prcxfucts and teach patients how
to I(x)k after their skin.
Ms. Hodgson notes cancer treatments like
radiation and chemotherapy take their toll on
a patient's skin and cause their hair to fall
out. The skin treatments help the women feel
better about themselves.
"It's to camouflage them from the effects
of radiation;" says Ms. Hodgson. "You just
don't look like yourself anymore. (Cancer
treatment) makes you look like a victim."
She says even something as simple as
drawing a patient's eyebrows back on means
a lot.
JUDE HODGSON
'It's a wonderful feeling when you
can empower someone else to run
a successful business.'
11, allows them to take hack control"
Ms. Hodgson currently helps patients at
Toronto's Princess Margarel Hospital.
"I love doing the patient sessions. The
women are wonderful. They really appreci-
ate It,
Besides her work in Lox)k Goxd Feel
Better. Ms. Hodgson was involved in the cre-
ation of a handb(x)k for cancer patients
called Changes, Choices and Challenges.
And she was executive producer of a video
called Facing Cancer with Confidence,
which helps women deal with the side effects
of various treatments.
All this hard work has not gone unno-
ticed.
Ms. Hodgson was recently named one of
Toronto Life Fashion's 1997 Women Who
Make a Difference in the Business
Professional category. She says the award
surprised her because CEOs of large compa-
nies were also in the running.
"It's a real hig honor just to be nominat-
ed."
Ms. Hodgson is currently a senior sales
director with ;Mary Kay Cosmetic~, a posi-
tion that Insolves supervising about 400
%fart' Kav consultants and sometimes
requires her to travel across Canada and fix
United States. She's held the position for
ahout 10 years and says while it offers much
tlembllity. It demands a lot of self-discipline
Part of her role Involves training k1lary
Ka% consultants how to set up and orgamie
their businesses and develop the skills neces-
sary to become successful
Ms. Hodgson says she eventually
becomes like their "mother and erandmoth-

to run successful businesses. It's a wonderful
feehn-,, when you can ernpower someone
else to run a successful business."

schedule, she left her full-time job so she
could devote more time to her grow In_, Man
Kav business and her Iamily. %Is Hodgson
found that by running her business out of her
home she was able to spend more time w Ith
her children.
Her busmess prospered. Over the wars
she's earned many awards from Mary Ka,..
including seven compam cars dour of them
pink Cadillac, and two pink Buicks), eight
diamond rings, three mink coats and trips to
Hone Kone. Paris and Vienna. Along the
way she was a member of the Mary Kay
Advlson Board and was honored with a
Miss Go Give Award.
Ms. Hodgson doesn't dwell on her ongo-
ing battle with cancer. She says she simply
tries to make good things come from bad.
"I don't feel real bad about (having can-
cer). It's just one more thing to deal with"
She also considers herself very lucky to
have the flexibility and the resources to help
others whether it's women fighting cancer or
the Sunday School children at her church.
"If there's a need and I've got the ability,
I'll fill it. I'm a good team player."
