Consumers aril the environment pay the cost of Hydro's unregulated monopoly. Nuclear industry cheerleaders like Dave Shier routinely complain that the media are out to get them. The complaints verge on paranoia. Mr. Shier suggested that the media should subject themselves to peer reviews. However, he misses the point that media such as the News Advertiser are constantly evaluated by advertisers and readers, who can always opt for the com- petition. By contrast, ratepayers have no choice about buying electricity from Ontario Hydro, and no voice in how that electricity is generated, The nuclear industry's obsession with s(crecy is a large part of the problem. Public scrutiny can only improve nuclear safety. That's why we have freedom -of - information legislation.
