explaining

Federal Liberal candidate Dan McTeague has admit -
u
led responslllllty for factual izaffes in an old educational
biography. but he still has some explaining to do.
Controvers-, continues to swirl around the incumKont
Ontario Ridin2 MP whose 1993 biographies claim he
has a rna-sters of economics from the UnIvers1tv of
Toronto - he does not. What he does have is an honor%
BA in political economics.
Mr. McTeague says he accepts responsibilitN for the
errors. But, they have remal ned und I sc overed for at least
three years-_ That is nothing short of negligent.
Though an argument could be made about some of the
failure% of the federal Liberals in the current mandate -
action on unemployment, broken GST promises - few
can debate Mr. McTeague's personal record of serving
constituent% In Ontario Riding. (Mr. McTeague is now
running in the newly-forined riding of Pickening-Ajax-
Uxbridge.) He has stood against the federal government
on several issues and has staked a cUm as an advocate
of organ donation for those who need a voice in
Parliament.
But an inflated, untrue claim in a blographv is a major
problem for Mr. McTeague. His credibility I-% now at
stake, and like other minister% and member% who have
been forced to defend themselves after calls for thicir res-
ignations, he will face questions throughout this cam-
paign about his promises.
There were attempts by Mr. McTeague over the past
few days to explain away the error% in his biography. He
returned to school. after receiving his general BA. and
earned his honors degree in political economics. Mr.
McTeague says a campaign worker, whom he refuses to
identify, mistakenly assumed he'd retumed to school and
received a master's degree.
Mr. McTeague should have taken the time and trouble
to ensure his biography was en-or-fmt.
It doesn't really matter whether Mr. McTeague has an
MA or a BA. What does matter is die controversy creat-
ed by Mr. McTeague's lack of accuracy in describing his
background and the credibility problem that creates for
him -
Should he resign? No. Should he be more careful in
the fultum? Definitely.

To the editor -
Regarding the letter by Mr. John

I would like to ask Mr. Stone exactly
who you refer to. I assume, as you are the
president of the Society for Catholic Life
and Culture. you are referring to
Catholics. I do no( think I need to remind
you sir IJ= our society is made up of peo-
ple of many different cultures and reli-
gions. We are not all Catholics and should
therefore not be expected to live by the
Catechisms of the Catholic church which
you quote.
I would even venture a guess that
there arc even Catholics who occasional-
ly indulge in such material. Quite evi-
dently there are a great number of people
who do not share your vwws — 5,000
customers of the adwt movie store cited
in die article alone. just because you
diink adult movie stores am promoting
intrinsic evil", everyone else should not
be forced to abide by your moraills.
If you do not cam for aduk materiall,
nobody forces you to go to an adult vKleo
store. However, in a democratic society
such as Canada, adults have the right to

To the editor. -
I was happy to see a front-page story
about Ajax Earth Week in the Ajax New s
Advertiser. It seems that there are many
people in Ajax who care about our envi-
ronment and are suiving to make a dIf
fcrence.
Unfortunately, Our local government
Openly MOCkS Our Concerns by insisting
on Wraying all public lawns with harmful
pesticides. This is completely unneces-
sary; a few dandelions never hurt anyone
and besides. our municipality should set
a positive example by leading the way in
environmental awareness.
So, although I am thrilled about our
celebration of Earth Week, we still have a
long way to go.

Officials to talk
merger possibilities
By BRIAN LEGREE
DURHAM STAFF
OSHAWA - Officials from
Durham's eight utilities are meeting
today (Tuesday) to determine the
future direction of their amalgama-
tion efforts.
Representatives from utilities in
Oshawa. Whitby, Clarington, Scu-
gog. Ajax, Pickering, Uxbridge and
Brock have been meeting since late
last year discussing amalgamation
options,
The group commissioned a report
on the merger possibilities which rec-
ommended the creation of a single
utility to serve the region's 145,(M)4)
hydro customers.
However, Oshawa's Public Utili-
ties Commission voted unanimously
against joining a s . ingle. region -wide
utility at a meeting recently because
it would have resulted in higher elec-
tricity rates in Oshawa, says At
O'Donnell, PUC chairman.
The Whitbv Hvdro Electric Com-
mission has also voted against the
single utility proposal.
But Mr. O'Donnell says the issue
isn't dead yet.
"We're going to see what we can
do. see what we can come up %&jth,
find ways to at least pool our
resources to save money I -or cus-
tomers — even it it's not an amalga-
mation," says Mr. O'Donnell. chair-
man of the Oshawa Puhlic Utilltic,,

PICKERING — The Pickering Bell -Air
Travel minor atom selects finished their
successful hockey season with a double
overtime win over the Humber Valley
Sharks to capture the North York Tier I
championship.
Patrick Mundy sent the Pickering fans
into a frenzy when he made several good
moves to fire the OT winner in the Bel -Air
atoms' 4-3 victory in the best -of -three
series. Adam Van Dyk assisted.
Pickering fell behind 1-0 before Marc
Dirosa scored a beautiful goal on a set-up
from Matt Gifford.
Pickering jumped out in front when
Christopher Butler's extra effort earned him
a goal on an assist to Dirosa.
After Kai Sartishon's backchecking pre-
vented a potential Hawks' goal, he charged
the net and buried
Pickering's third goall on a feed from
Mundy. Ile game was sent into overtime
when a brief lapse in concentration by the
Bel -Air atoms resulted in two quick Sharks'
goals.
Goaltender Dave Demarinis continued
Michael Olsen's strong play between the
pipes in overtime, displaying nerves of steel
under great pressure.
Pickering forced the third game by
trouncing Humber Valley 6-0. Bradley
Cowan led the charge with a hat trick while
Dirosa added two goals and Butler notched
one.
Brendan Babcock contributed two assists
with other helpers from Butler, Dirosa, Gif-
ford, Patrick Molony, Patrick O'Sullivan
and Mark Romanelli.
Jason Collins forechecked tenaciously
while the defence of Cameron Clayton,
Ryan Clayton, Gifford, O'Sullivan, Chri
Pasternack and Van Dyk formed a wall a
the blueline for goallies Demarinis an(
Olsen, who were perfect en route to thei
I I th shutout of the year.
Pickering lost the first game of the serie:
2- 1. Mundy scored an unassisted goal.
During the season, the Bel -Air Trave
atoms outscored their opponents by a mar.
gin of more than 2-1 in compiling a regular
season record of 10-1-2 and winning fou
tournaments.
In addition, Demarinis and Olsen led tht
